George Baker Jr., 69, of San Angelo died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Baptist Memorials Center. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, in Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. Joe Vasquez officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. George was born Sept. 21, 1930, in Waldo, Ark., to George and Vera Tompkins Baker Sr. He was a longtime resident of San Angelo. He graduated from San Angelo High School in 1948 and attended San Angelo College. He married Barbara Brown in 1965 in San Angelo. George and his father were owners of Baker & Son Plumbing. He retired in 1993. He was a member of the National Guard and the Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Baker, and three sons, Gary Baker, David Baker and Dennis Baker, all of San Angelo. JEWELL R. LEWIS Jewell R. Lewis, 94, died Monday, March 27, 2000, in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was a resident from 1992 to the present time. She was born Aug. 5, 1905, in Durant, Okla. She was married to Glenn R. Lewis on July 20, 1926, who is deceased. She was a resident of San Angelo for 64 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. Survivors include a son, Richard G. Lewis of Terrell; a daughter, Carolyn J. West of Colorado Springs; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Glenn W. Lewis in 1989. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, with the service at 1:30 p.m. in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of choice. WALTER D. GOBER BROWNWOOD - Walter D. Gober, former Odessa resident and businessman, loving husband and father, age 88, currently of Abilene passed away Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Hendrick Hospice in Abilene. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Brownwood. Interment will be in Eastlawn Memorial Park. Walter was born April 27, 1911, in McCulloch County and was raised in Brownwood. On Oct. 15, 1932, he married Helen England. She preceded him in death July 4, 1999. He owned and operated a number of businesses during the years he lived in Odessa. He last operated Gober & Sons Inc., a masonry supply business. Upon retirement, Walter and Helen lived at Lake Amistad near Del Rio and Lake Spence near Robert Lee. They moved to Abilene in 1997. Walter was a member of Pecan Baptist Church in Coke County. Survivors include his children, David Gober and wife, Grace, and Anna Brazzel and husband, Ray, all of Abilene, Jack Gober and wife, Maggie, of Odessa, and Margie Thornton and husband, Ron, of Oklahoma City; grandchildren, Jana and Jubal Zimmerman, Dana and Andy Wilbarger, Rhonda Gail, Jack W. Jessie Lewis Sr. was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Cameron to Livingston and Orzeluse Lewis. He passed away March 29, 2000. In 1947 he moved to San Angelo and became a member of the New Light Baptist Church. He retired from Levi Strauss in 1975. He is survived by one sister, Clarice Thompson of San Angelo; four daughters, Earnestine Bibbs, Charles-Etta Jackson, Patricia Lewis and Anita Fields, all of San Angelo; 11 sons, Charles Knight, Jessie Lewis Jr., John L. VELMA JONES McCANDLESS Velma Jones McCandless, 102, died Friday, March 31, 2000, at her home in San Angelo. Velma was born June 12, 1897, in Spring Ranch, Neb. She married Bryce L. McCandless on Jan. 14, 1918, in Cleveland, Okla. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, in Fairmount Cemetery with the Rev. John Loving officiating. RICHARD COLE MEDLIN JR. Richard Cole Medlin Jr., 57, of San Angelo died at his home Thursday, March 30, 2000, at 1:15 p.m. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 3, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Loving and the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Richard was born June 12, 1942, in Hereford, Texas, to Jeanette Hussein Medlin and Richard Cole Medlin. He lived his early years in Hereford, until, at the age of 8 his mother died. Shortly thereafter, Richard attended San Marcos Baptist Academy for nine years. He then served a short period in the U.S. Navy. During the 1960s he worked as a Dallas police officer, a Nevada highway patrolman and a security guard at a Las Vegas casino. In the 1970s, Richard worked in the district attorney's office in Las Vegas as an investigator with expertise in electronic surveillance and detection, and became known as the ``Super Snoop.'' He later worked for the U.S. government in Ecuador, South America, doing undercover drug surveillance. Thereafter, he formed International Security Group in San Antonio, which manufactured armored vehicles. He developed and patented various security applications for vehicles, which were sold worldwide. For a time in the 1980s he operated a litigation support company in Las Vegas. Most recently he established Safe Car Inc., in San Angelo, armoring vehicles for sale to many governments and individuals internationally, including the U.S. State Department. His contract with the State Department was the largest single-most contract awarded to one company at one time. Richard developed a close relationship with the Egyptian government while armoring numerous vehicles for President Mubarak, including an armored vehicle with a patented retractable weapon platform system. Transport planes were flown in from Egypt to Mathis Field to load and deliver various armored vehicles. Richard was recognized for his expertise in armoring applications in many periodicals such as the London Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Penthouse and Texas Monthly among others. One noteworthy application was a bulletproof display case he manufactured to house the Gutenberg Bible displayed at the University of Texas at Austin. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Pam Medlin of San Angelo; his son, Dan Medlin and his wife, Debbie Pappas Medlin, of San Angelo; one stepson, Michael Norton of Washington, D.C.; one stepdaughter, Alexis Norton of San Angelo; one sister, Janice Johnson and her husband, George Johnson, of Las Vegas; and one aunt, Jeri Medlin La Canna of Las Vegas. DOROTHY RILEY Dorothy Mae Hill Riley, 78, of San Angelo passed away Wednesday night, March 30, 2000, at her home surrounded by her loved ones and friends. Dorothy was born Aug. 1, 1921, in Stanton, Texas. Dorothy moved to San Angelo more than 30 years ago with her husband, Herbert B. Riley. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, three grandchildren and two brothers. Dorothy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend and she will be missed terribly. Richard Cole Medlin Jr., 57, of San Angelo died at his home Thursday, March 30, 2000, at 1:15 p.m. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 3, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Rev. John Loving and the Rev. Mike Smith officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Richard was born June 12, 1942, in Hereford, Texas, to Jeanette Hussein Medlin and Richard Cole Medlin. He lived his early years in Hereford, until, at the age of 8 his mother died. Shortly thereafter, Richard attended San Marcos Baptist Academy for nine years. He then served a short period in the U.S. Navy. During the 1960s he worked as a Dallas police officer, a Nevada highway patrolman and a security guard at a Las Vegas casino. In the 1970s, Richard worked in the district attorney's office in Las Vegas as an investigator with expertise in electronic surveillance and detection, and became known as the ``Super Snoop.'' He later worked for the U.S. government in Ecuador, South America, doing undercover drug surveillance. Thereafter, he formed International Security Group in San Antonio, which manufactured armored vehicles. He developed and patented various security applications for vehicles, which were sold worldwide. For a time in the 1980s he operated a litigation support company in Las Vegas. Most recently he established Safe Car Inc. in San Angelo, armoring vehicles for sale to many governments and individuals internationally, including the U.S. State Department. His contract with the State Department was the largest single-most contract awarded to one company at one time. Richard developed a close relationship with the Egyptian government while armoring numerous vehicles for President Mubarak, including an armored vehicle with a patented retractable weapon platform system. Transport planes were flown in from Egypt to Mathis Field to load and deliver various armored vehicles. Richard was recognized for his expertise in armoring applications in many periodicals such as the London Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Penthouse and Texas Monthly, among others. One noteworthy application was a bulletproof display case he manufactured to house the Gutenberg Bible displayed at the University of Texas at Austin. Richard is survived by his loving wife, Pam Medlin of San Angelo; his son, Dan Medlin and his wife, Debbie Pappas Medlin, of San Angelo; one stepson, Michael Norton of Washington, D.C.; one stepdaughter, Alexis Norton of San Angelo; one sister, Janice Johnson and her husband, George Johnson, of Las Vegas; and one aunt, Jeri Medlin La Canna of Las Vegas. Mr. Beeman passed away Monday, April 3, 2000, in Lufkin after a long illness. Buck Beeman was born Dec. 16, 1925, in Crews in Runnels County to Adeline (Brister) and Joe D. Beeman. He grew up in Barnhart. He married Wanda Lee Richardson, daughter of Alfred Austin Richardson and Virginia (Young) Richardson in Lampasas on May 28, 1944. He served in the 89th Infantry of the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended the University of Texas at Austin and McMurry College in Abilene and graduated from San Angelo Junior College. He was a retired custom and commercial building contractor. He and his family lived in San Angelo and Waco before settling down in Lubbock for 35 years. He moved to Lufkin in 1995. He was a past member of the Masonic Lodge, Civitans and the Optimist Club, and a longtime member of the Methodist Church, where he served on the board of stewards and taught Sunday School. Mr. Beeman is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Wanda Beeman of Lufkin; his daughters and sons-in-law, Lana and George Proctor of Arlington, Diane and John Rochelle of Graham and Kay and Don Neill of Lufkin; and his most treasured grandchildren, Curtis Rochelle, Caitlin Rochelle, Scott Neill, Morgan Neill, Taylor Neill and Jennifer Neill Young, who all learned the nicknames he had given them before they learned their real names. He also is survived by four sisters, Emma Alsman, Irene Newman and Sally Allen, all of San Angelo, and May Henry of California; two brothers, G.C. ``Pete'' Beeman of Kermit and G.E. ``Ed'' Beeman of Port Aransas; and numerous nieces and nephews, including special niece, Inez Boyd. CARLENE NUTT KEEL Carlene Nutt Keel, 69, formerly of San Angelo, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill. Arrangements are pending at Arron Cremation and Burial Services in Urbana and there will be a memorial service at a later date in San Angelo. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Make A Wish Foundation. She was born Feb. 27, 1931, to West Texas ranchers Jimmie M. Nutt and Ida Elliott Nutt. She attended school in San Angelo and on July 1, 1950, she married Airman Ben R. Keel of Missouri. Mrs. Keel and her husband settled in the San Angelo area where they owned ranch and farm land in Irion and Schleicher counties. She also was active in their business of making and marketing gourmet jellies and candies. The last two years of her life, she resided in Champaign, Ill., where her son could be close by. She was a Baptist. Mrs. Keel gave of herself in the 1960s to medical science as treatment for pituitary tumors was being researched. As the end of her life drew near, she again gave to the field of medicine by being available to the teaching staff and medical students at the Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. Carlene Keel was an avid animal lover and never failed to go the extra mile to see that God's little creatures were taken care of. She always was taking in stray animals and would think nothing of stopping on the busy Beauregard Street bridge to rescue an injured bird. Mrs. Keel was preceded in death by her parents and her only sister, Mildred Nutt Hamilton. SIDNEY JAMES FILES JR. McGREGOR - Sidney James Files Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died March 31, 2000, at his home in Houston. He was born April 3, 1917, in Blum, Texas, to Janie Elizabeth Coffin Files and Sidney James Files, the eldest of six children. He grew up surrounded by family in Itasca and Files Valley, Texas. Growing up he was fun-loving and hard-working. With his brother John, he operated a dairy from age 10 through high school. After graduating from Itasca High School in May 1935, he moved to Austin where he studied electrical engineering at the University of Texas. He received a bachelor of science degree in engineering in 1940. After graduation he worked as an engineer for Hunt Tool Co. in Homer, La., and for Brown-Bellows-Columbia Construction Co. in Corpus Christi. He married his high school sweetheart, Jennie V. Buttrill on Feb. 8, 1941, in Weatherford. They lived in Corpus Christi and then in Itasca, where Sid worked for the Itasca Cotton Mfg. Co. Sid and Jennie had one daughter, Elizabeth Anne, born Sept. 2, 1942, in Philadelphia, Pa. He began a 40-year career with General Electric Co. in 1942. With General Electric, Sid had training assignments in Philadelphia and Fort Wayne, Ind. He then worked in switchgear in Dallas, in welding sales in Beaumont and as factory representative in the eight western states, while living in San Mateo and Burlingame, Calif. He joined the Houston plant of the General Electric Distribution Assemblies Department in January 1954 as manager-materials. In 1966 he changed to manager-requisition engineering. This plant grew to be the largest in the world, building switchboards and panelboards for power distribution in commercial and public buildings. He retired from General Electric in 1982. He was a lifelong Presbyterian and was very active in the church in each community where he lived. He served as an elder, deacon and church school teacher for a number of terms through the years. In Houston, Sid and Jennie were very active in Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church. They enjoyed more than 46 years together before Jennie died after a 19-year battle with cancer on Nov. 18, 1987. Sidney married Mildred F. Kroll on Oct. 1, 1988, blending their families. Sid and Mildred shared six good years together before she died in December 1994. Sid is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne and her husband, Tony R. Dutton, of San Angelo; three granddaughters, Heather Anne Dutton of Alameda, Calif., Margaret Elizabeth Dutton of Austin and Mary Kathryn McCullough and her husband, Joseph Michael McCullough, and their son, Sid's great-grandson, Michael Joseph McCullough, of Sherman. In addition, Sid is survived by his brother, John Thomas Files and wife, Barbara, of Houston; sisters, Sara Currie of Austin, Janice Conner and husband, Bill, of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., Joyce Fox of Irvington, N.Y., and Eleanor Currie and husband, Tom, of Dallas; and their families. He also is survived by sisters-in-law, Margaret Cole and husband, Charles, of McGregor and Leta Bills of Fort Worth and their families; and by his extended stepfamily, stepson, Jerry Kroll, wife Sari, and their children, Kate, Jenna, Kara and Julie; stepdaughter, Susi Looney and husband, Michael, and their children, Robin, Kyle, Stacie and Tracey; and by numerous cousins and friends. Sid appreciated and cared for people. He loved life, his family, his church and his many friends. He was a devoted husband, wonderful father and grandfather and good friend to all who knew him. He leaves a legacy of his faith, his warmth and the echo of his hearty laugh that filled a room. He enjoyed a good discussion and a good story. His retirement years have been filled with numerous volunteer activities, travel and special times with family and friends. He will be remembered warmly and missed by all whose lives he touched. Stephenson, age 95, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2000. She was born Oct. 31, 1904, in Rockwall to E.O. and Daisy J. Rigsbee. At the age of 8, she and her family moved to Fort Stockton at the time the KCM&O rail lines were extended to Fort Stockton as her father was the station agent. She attended the Fort Stockton public schools, CIA (Texas Woman's University) and Sul Ross State Teachers College (Sul Ross State University). She taught one year in Toyah, Texas. During the '30s, she served as a relief worker. Later she became a Texas Welfare Worker, the job she held until 1953 when she moved to California where she worked at a similar position. In 1981, she decided to move back to her old home in Fort Stockton to spend her retirement years. As a young woman she was chosen the first Miss Fort Stockton and represented this city at different events. Having a very good singing voice, she was asked to sing for many different occasions. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Texas State Employees Association, Orange County Employees Association and the Santa Ana County Association. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; three brothers, James E., Everett O. II and Herbert K.; and two sisters, Runette Garnett and Winnie D. Tadlock. Christine was married to Thomas Franklin Stephenson on June 19, 1925. To that union were born two daughters, Jean Elizabeth and Dorothy Christine. She is survived by Jean and her husband, Bill Garrett; and Dorothy (Dotsie) Chriesman; five grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Services are pending at McCoy Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries SIDNEY HARWOOD Sidney Harwood, formerly of San Angelo, Texas, died in Tulsa, Okla., on Friday, March 31, 2000, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Benjie Bowman. Mrs. Harwood moved to Tulsa in May of 1993. Mrs. Harwood was born on Feb. 12, 1920, in Clint, Texas, to Sidney and Alma Hay Colwell. She married C.V. ``Shorty'' Harwood on April 25, 1937, in Abilene, Texas. They moved from Winters, Texas, to San Angelo in 1946. The Harwoods owned the Harwood Kennels for many years. Mrs. Harwood was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church until her move to Tulsa, where she joined and was baptized in Parkview Baptist Church. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 6, in Tulsa. Her husband, ``Shorty'' preceded her in death in 1991. JANE ATKINS ALFORD WEST COLUMBIA - Jane Atkins Alford passed away peacefully April 4, 2000, near her son's home in West Columbia following a lengthy illness. Her adventurous life spanned the remarkable events of the 20th century. She grew up in East Texas and attended Baylor College at Belton and Sul Ross College in Alpine. She began her teaching career in a one-room school on the Texas-Mexico border, in the village of Ruidoso, Presidio County, in the Big Bend area with her sister, Margaret Atkins. There she met and married Herbert Alford, a specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, who predeceased her in 1992. His career with the USDA took the family to San Angelo, where she continued her dedication to education and community service. She was a past president of the Women's Federation Study Club, which founded the Tom Green Public Library. She also taught Sunday school at the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo. Later she taught sixth grade at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School in Baton Rouge, La., from 1959 until her retirement in 1970. Survivors include her sister, Margaret Atkins Young of Waco; three sons, John Herbert Alford of Dallas, Thomas Richard ``Dick'' Alford of West Columbia and Robert Atkins Alford of Sparta, N.J.; a daughter, Jane Ann Tudor Welch of Santa Fe, N.M.; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. THOMAS WILLIAM HENDRICK LLANO - Thomas William Hendrick, 89, of Tow, Texas, entered immortality on April 5, 2000. Tommy was born on a farm in Bell County, Texas, on Oct. 20, 1910. At 15, he moved to Lamesa, where he graduated from high school. He then attended Texas Tech University for one year. He dropped out of school and worked in Lamesa, Harlingen and San Saba. At 27, he entered North Texas State Teachers College. He received his master's degree in physical education in 1940 and began his work with children. He was assistant director of a W.K. Kellogg camp in Michigan. He married Dorothy Murdoch of Dallas in 1941 and spent four years as a chief petty officer in the Navy during World War II. He came back to San Angelo in 1946 to begin his career in education and spent the next 30 years as a physical education teacher, high school principal and elementary principal. The last 21 years were spent in Andrews. He retired in 1976 and moved to Tow on the shores of Lake Buchanan. He will be remembered in Andrews for the Devonian Elementary School rose garden and by his family and his many friends as an avid fisherman, archer, craftsman, devoted educator, husband and father. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Llano. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Tow; daughter, Lynda of Seguin; son, David of Houston; and granddaughter, Cristina of Houston and Austin. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Hendrick of San Saba; his mother, Beatrice Nichols Williams of San Angelo; his brother, Ira of Toppenish, Wash.; and his sister, Beatrice Doran of San Saba. A family service will be held at his cremation with a memorial service to follow at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the First Christian Church of Llano. Mapes Young; his brothers, Robert Young Sr., Floyd Young, M.L. Young and George Young; and a sister, Jessie Young. She was a graduate of Ballinger High School and Hardin-Simmons University. She was a teacher in many schools in West Texas including Winters, Norton and Tuscola. While on a Baptist mission trip to California, she met William M. Munson. They were married on June 7, 1950, and made their home in Ventura, Calif., until his death on Dec. 25, 1973. Also preceding her in death were her parents, R.W. and Pearl Smith; and two brothers, Luther and Sherman Smith. She moved to Abilene where she made her home for several years before moving to Ballinger. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Juel Smith of Ballinger; two nieces, Katherine Hardegree of McKinney and Virginia Chapman and husband, Kelly, of Ballinger; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Her nieces and nephews lovingly called her ``Aunt Twee'' and she will be missed by her family. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mamie Gates, five sisters and two brothers. Johnny is survived by his wife, Betty Nadine Gates; three daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Michael Kelly of Denver City, Debbie and Doug Mann of Eagle River, Alaska, and Judy and Jimmie Wilson of Odessa; grandchildren, Dalyn and Janalyn Epperson of Denver City, John and James Kelly of Lubbock, Nicholas and Benjamin Wilson of Odessa, and Christopher and Kasci Mann of Eagle River; great-grandchildren, Meegan Dee Wilson of Odessa and Mikhayla Epperson of Denver City; one sister, Sister Mary Charolotte, Reverend Sisters of Mercy, of Omaha, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.
