Cooksey died Thursday morning, April 27, 2000, in Brownwood Regional Hospital, where he had been since March 6. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at First United Methodist Church in Goldthwaite. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Mullin. Cooksey was born Sept. 28, 1925 in Mullin, the fourth and youngest son of Thomas D. and Grace Rutherford Cooksey. He attended public school in Mullin and would have had his children believe - in later years - that he walked three miles each day through the snow, uphill both ways, with only two cold biscuits to eat for lunch just to get there. In the Spring of 1942, Cooksey joined the Merchant Marines and served on ship for the duration of World War II. He married the love of his life and wonderful soulmate, Bernice Elaine ``Bennie'' Mills, Jan. 18, 1947, in Brownwood. She served beautifully in her role as ``Bill's wife'' and ``straight woman'' to his quips and joke set-ups. Cooksey retired in 1994 after a 46-year career in law enforcement and law enforcement education. He began his law enforcement career in 1949 as a Texas Department of Public Safety patrolman stationed at Llano. He served as a patrolman at Hamilton and Gatesville and in 1958 he was transferred to Waco where he became safety education officer, one of the best known and most popular of the day. He was particularly known for his ``fast draw'' and trick shooting, and he used his talent for education and demonstration purposes. In October 1960, Cooksey accepted a new DPS patrol station in Sanderson and after serving there for one year, he was asked by the Terrell County Commissioners Court to fill the unexpired term of the sheriff who had resig ned. Cooksey served that two-year term and was elected to two more four-year terms. Law enforcement was his vocation and he wore his badge with pride, dignity and used compassion and understanding to the greatest good. He was known and respected throughout the state of Texas, loved for his sense of humor and praised for his impeccable demeanor. On Nov. 4, 1965, while arresting a Mexican national on a robbery charge at a ranch near Dryden, Cooksey was shot and critically wounded. After a 10-month recovery, Cooksey and Texas Ranger Alfred Allee tracked the bandit and arrested him after a shootout near the old general store at Dryden. For the rest of his life, Cooksey suffered from some of the after-effects of the shooting and that, coupled with his realization that education is the best preparation a police officer can have in this fast-changing society led him to ``hang up his gun.'' In 1972, he accepted an associate professor's position at Odessa College in Odessa, and from 1975 until 1981, he served as an instructor of law enforcement and criminal justice at Texas A&M University in College Station. He returned to Odessa to serve as the department chairman of law enforcement and fire technology from 1981 until 1993 and had continued to teach criminal justice and recruit for the program through the Spring of 1994. Cooksey received national recognition and special FBI commendation for his investigation and final arrest of the Mexican bandit in Dryden in 1966. In 1994, he received the ``Wallace D. Beasley'' award for ``outstanding achievement and law enforcement training and education.'' Since retirement, Bill and Bennie have lived in Mullin. They are members of the First United Methodist Church in Goldthwaite. Together, they reared six children. Survivors include three sons, Eric Cooksey and his wife, Gloria, of El Paso, Terrell Cooksey and his wife, Anne Charlotte Patterson, of Austin and Wayland Cooksey of San Angelo; three daughters, Candace Cooksey Fulton of San Angelo, Billie Cooksey of Dallas and Leslie Cooksey Sparkman and her husband, John, of Odessa; seven grandchildren, Travis Watson and Tyler Watson, Meagan Cooksey, Terrell Fulton and Luke Sparkman, Lily Sparkman and Leah Sparkman. Also, three brothers survive, Tom Cooksey Jr. and his wife, Pug, of San Saba, Jack Cooksey of Mullin and James M. Cooksey and his wife, Sue, of Irving. The family requests donations to a favorite charity, First United Methodist Church of Goldthwaite or Sierra Vista United Methodist Church of San Angelo. J. VERNON THOMSON J.
