Adams, 80, of San Angelo died Monday, May 8, 2000, at his residence. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 12, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Miller, pastor of Park Heights Baptist Church and the Rev. Don Bailey, chaplain with VistaCare Family Hospice, officiating. Military graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. in Eldorado Cemetery. Roy was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Milano, Texas, to Robert H. and Myrtle V. Mosley Adams. Roy was a champion old fiddler who made a violin talk for 68 years. When he started fiddling, he let instinct take over. His mouth would twitch to the music and exactly on the right note he'd look up with a twinkle in his eyes and the audience better be smiling because Roy was. Fiddling is kind of a disease that runs in the family that struck his brothers, father, grandfather and uncle. He mimicked the old-time style of his grandfather, with a fiddle they had in their home and like many other fiddlers, he played by ear. ``An old backyard fiddler like me, I've never had a lesson. I couldn't read music if I saw it.'' But he could play it. Roy said, ``People have to like you, if you like music,'' and that the music had taught him to behave himself. Roy served as a soldier twice, in the U.S. Army during World War II and their Korean War. He was a ranch foreman, oilfield roughneck and for 21 years was a test driver for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Roy completed the seventh grade at Milano before quitting to become a farmer. After he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps at San Diego, Calif., for two years, he returned to Milam County. He moved to West Texas in 1940. Then came World War II and he served in the 351st Division in North Africa and Italy and was a pressure relief soldier for the Anzio beachhead. His decorations include the Combat Infantry Badge, two battle stars and Good Conduct Medal. He suffered a slight wound on his wrist and still carries the scar but he felt that it wasn't ``big enough'' to warrant applying for the Purple Heart. After the war, he worked out of Eldorado for Petty Seismograph Co. He became ranch foreman for Kenneth Brown's North Concho Ranch before volunteering for reserve status and getting called to active duty 17 days later for the Korean War. During that war he was in charge of basic infantry training for field artillery soldiers at Camp McCoy, Wis. Later, he was a ``chief section'' in charge of a gun and 15 men. He was discharged in June 1952. Roy was a member of Park Heights Baptist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans. Roy was married to Ruby Lee Brown on Dec. 26, 1941, in Dickens and she preceded him in death on May 25, 1992. On Oct. 1, 1998, he was married to Nelda Martin Hancock in San Angelo. Roy also was preceded in death by his parents and twin boys. Survivors include his wife, Nelda Adams of San Angelo; his daughter, Shirley Brooks and husband, Bill, of San Angelo; one granddaughter, Susan Johnson and husband, Kenneth, of El Paso; two great-granddaughters, Jami and Kodie Johnson; one sister, Alice Moody of Channing; one brother, Bence Adams of San Bernardino, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; three stepdaughters, Sherry Stringer and husband, Don, of San Angelo, Linda Davis and husband, Nelson, of Lewisville and Janice Long of San Angelo.; five stepgrandchildren, Leddie Davis and husband, John, Tammy Swanson and husband, Terry, Kenneth Long, Todd Hart and Brandy Long; and 10 step-great-grandchildren. ROY V. ADAMS Roy V. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was a ranch foreman, oilfield roughneck and for 21 years was a test driver for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Roy completed the seventh grade at Milano before quitting to become a farmer. After he was in the Civilian Conservation Corps at San Diego, Calif., for two years and returned to Milam County.
