CHARLIE EVELYN `CHARBY' BECK PENDLETON MIDLAND - Remembering Charlie Evelyn ``Charby'' Beck Pendleton, daughter of Charles and Bertha Beck: Loyal sister to Vic, Mary, Marge and Esther; loving wife to Joe; mother to Nancy, Becky and Joe; gracious mother-in-law to Elizabeth and Barry; and grandmother to Ryan, Jack and Anna. Charlie Evelyn Beck Pendleton lived well, laughed often and loved much. Her life was full of good friends, with whom she shared many adventures, played many games, worked complex puzzles and shared many wonderful meals. She worked for years as a Braille transcriber, teaching professionally with visually handicapped children and gave them love along with instruction. First, in Glendale and then in Midland, Charby worked with handicapped children for more than 20 years. In 1990, she earned certification from the Library of Congress in Braille transcription. Charby was active in her community, volunteering for Hospice of Midland and for Serenity Alanon. She was one of the founders of the Quantum Investment Club and was learning the intricacies of the investment markets in one of her many retirement activities. She also was active in the First Baptist Church of Midland, ``EnAmie'' the book club, the Old-Timer's Bridge Club and the Ladies Breakfast Club. Born in San Angelo in 1927, the youngest of five children, Charby grew up in the depression and learned the value of hard work and frugality. She clipped coupons for all her friends and family and loved a really good sale. Charby was a good student and graduated from San Angelo High School in 1945 and attended San Angelo College for two years. She married her Baylor sweetheart, Joe E. Pendleton, on June 1, 1947, in a gown handmade by her sister, Mary. Joe and Charby had 45 years together and traveled the world while Joe helped develop the North African oil industry in the 1960s. The family moved to southern California in 1966 and lived in Glendale until 1977. But the Pendletons were Texans to the core and returned to Midland where Joe worked for the FDIC and Charby worked for the Midland School District. On Friday, May 12, 2000, Charlie Evelyn Pendleton died peacefully in her sleep. Her death was unexpected to all, for she seemed to be in good health. She had spent a week in New York in April and was planning to visit her children and grandchildren in Seattle and Los Angeles this summer. With her church, she also had planned to travel to Oberammergau, Germany, for the millennium performance of the Passion Plays. Charby is survived by her daughter, Nancy of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; her daughter, Becky and son-in-law, Barry, of Seattle; and her son, Joe and daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, and their three children, Ryan, Jack and Anna of Bellevue, Wash.; her sister, Mary and brother-in-law, Robert Levo; sister, Marge and brother-in-law, Bill Neel; and sister-in-law, JoCeal Beck. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Ellis Funeral Home. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 18, in the First Baptist Chapel. The memorial service will be followed by a graveside service ceremony at 3 p.m. in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, where Charlie Evelyn will be laid to rest next to her loving husband, Joe. Friends and colleagues are welcome to join the family in celebrating her life. Remembrances will be greatly appreciated with donations made to Midland Hospice.
