She was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Coushatta, La. She was a member of the first graduating class of Odessa College School of Nursing in Pecos. She had worked as a surgical nurse at Reeves County Hospital since 1976. Hoffacker Jr. was born July 15, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Pa., and died Saturday, May 20, 2000, in Midland, Texas, the town he called home for 44 years. ``Ben'' loved his family, the oil business, fly-fishing, a good hunting dog, West Texas, faithful friends and the Presbyterian church. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church, Midland, Texas, and a Stephens Minister. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Suez Shrine. Ben was a 50-year member of the American Association of Professional Geologists and a charter member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists where he was registered as Certified Professional Geologist No. 267. Ben proudly served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After his discharge, Ben received a bachelor of arts degree in geology from Lehigh University in Lehigh, Pa., in 1946 and a master of science in petroleum geology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1948. During his early years in the oil business Ben worked for Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. (Standard of Indiana), South Penn Oil Co. (Bradford, Pa.), and Seaboard Oil Co. (Abilene, Texas). In 1958, when Seaboard Oil Co. merged with the Texas Co., Ben was transferred to Midland where he later worked for Monsanto Chemical Co. (Lion Oil Division). In January of 1962, with the establishment of Grover, MacCurdy and Hoffacker, Ben joined the ranks of West Texas independent operators from 1970 to the present. Ben worked successfully as an independent operator and consultant, drilling and developing production both for individual investors and limited partnerships throughout the lower 48 states and Canada. Ben Hoffacker was a member of American Association of Petroleum Geologists; charter member of American Institute of Professional Geologists; past president Abilene Geological Society (Texas); past chairman stratigraphic committee, Abilene Geological Society; past secretary-treasurer American Institute of Professional Geologists, 1966-1968; Permian Basin Study Group Committee for AIPG Publication ``Geology of Natural Gas in North America,'' 1959; vice president, Texas section, American Institute of Professional Geologists, 1969-1970; president, Texas section, AIPG, 1970-1971; chairman environmental geology committee of West Texas Geological Society; ethics committee, American Institute of Professional Geologists; house of delegates of American Association of Petroleum Geologists, 1974-1976; chairman, Permian Basin Petroleum Association Scholarship Fund, 1978-1981; governmental affairs committee, American Institute of Professional Geologists, 1982-1985; and vice president, West Texas Geological Society, 1994-1995. CHARLES E. WATKINS Charles E. Watkins, 59, of San Angelo passed away Friday, May 20, 2000. He was born Jan. 24, 1941, in Brownwood to Charles and Ruth Scott Watkins. Charles was identified as Brownwood's ``Claim to Fame'' during his high school athletic career playing football, basketball, baseball and participating in track. He attended Texas A&M University and played baseball there as well as receiving his bachelor of business administration degree. He later earned a master of business administration degree at East Texas State University. Charles began his career with GTE in 1965, serving in a number of positions. In 1994, he was named public affairs manager-western division. Returning to San Angelo in 1978, Charles was active in YMCA activities and named volunteer of the year in 1984 and 1985. Active in a number of other organizations at the state and local level, he served as a director in the Texas Alliance for Science, Technology and Math, Tom Green County United Way, Angelo State University Rams Club, West Texas A&M Club, San Angelo Cultural Affairs Council and Texas State Technical College. Charles spent time in Colorado, New Mexico and Texas each year to pursue his twin passions of hunting and golf. A visitation will take place at 7 p.m. May 23, at Johnson's Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on May 24, at the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart with the Most Rev. Michael Pfeifer as celebrant. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Omer was born April 5, 1918, in Victoria, Kan., to Andrew and Pauline Dreiling, now deceased. He attended parochial schools and high school in Victoria and Brunerdale Seminary in Canton, Ohio. He was a veteran of World War II. He married Virginia Evelyn Roberts of Colby, Kan., on April 7, 1941, in Concordia, Kan. Mr. Omer Dreiling was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His generosity touched the lives of many over the years. He was very active in various business ventures including the organization and operation of San Angelo By-Products, Dreiling Hide Co. of San Angelo, Lubbock Rendering Co. and Lone Star Rendering Co. in Dallas. In 1967, he merged all four corporations with Beatrice Food Co., at that time a diversified conglomerate, and continued management responsibilities until 1974 when he assumed the division management of Beatrice's Agri-Products division. During his business years, he was a pioneer in the development of animal by-products, such as tallow and animal protein for cattle and poultry feeds. He served on numerous animal nutrition research committees throughout the country. He served at one time as trustee of the Salvation Army Board, Sacred Heart School Board, Sacred Heart Cathedral parish council, president of the Seventh Regional Area of the National Renderers Association, director of the National Renderers Association, president of the National Hide Association, director of Pepcp, Mfg. Co. of Denver, director of CBP Resources of Greensboro, N.C., director of the former Central National Bank, board of trustees of former St. John's Hospital, San Angelo Country Club and trustee of the San Angelo Park Commission. He served as co-chairman for the former Amarillo Diocesean Appeal Fund, the building fund for the Sacred Heart School, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Christ the King Retreat Center and an addition to St. John's Hospital. He was a member of the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart parish, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, a Knight of the Grand Cross in the Papal Order of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and recipient of the Order's Pilgrim Shell. He was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Mary Josephine Dreiling Howard; as well as his loving wife, Virginia. He is survived by two daughters, Martha Rolland and her husband, Christopher, and Margo Ebanks and her husband, Garlon, all of Dallas; a son, Barney Dreiling of Dallas; a son-in-law, Dr. Fred Howard of Missouri City; two sisters, Flavia Lunsford of Hays, Kan., and Venita Harris of Westlake Village, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren, Ginny Rolland, Matthew Rolland, Margo Rolland, Michael Rolland, Sarah Howard, Caroline Howard, Emily Dreiling, Adrienne Dreiling, Ashley Ebanks and Jason Ebanks. JIMMY J. `JIM' WESSON Jimmy J. ``Jim'' Wesson, 55, of San Angelo died Sunday, May 21, 2000, in San Angelo. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 25, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Wesson was born July 1, 1944, in Sulphur Springs to Benjamin Franklin Wesson and Velma Grace Buchannon Wesson. Mr. Wesson began a career with GTE Southwest in March 1965 as a cable splicer helper in Garland. In the following 33 years he worked his way through the many levels of hourly and management positions, which included engineering/construction manager, network engineering manager, general service manager, state director-network provisioning and several other general manager positions. Mr. Wesson retired from GTE June 26, 1998, while then serving as access design and construction manager in San Angelo. Jim Wesson was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers-Fort Worth chapter, Rotary Club in Dickinson, board of directors and first vice president of Concho Valley Pioneer Club in San Angelo. Jim also served as president of the Fort Concho Telephone and Pioneers Club in 1989. Jim was an outdoorsman. He loved racing cars, bird hunting and fishing, but his true passion was golf. Jim was a longtime member of Bentwood Country Club and served as a member of the board of directors. He was a member of the Northern Area Golf Association, having served as secretary and he served on the board of Directors for the YMCA in San Angelo. Survivors include his three sons, Douglas Lee Wesson of San Angelo, Jeffery Jerome Wesson and his wife, Laurie, of San Angelo and Samuel Scott Wesson of Slidell, La.; three grandchildren, Matthew Neil Wesson, Jessica Leigh Wesson and Jacob Joseph Wesson; a sister-in-law, Francine Wesson of Garland; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Born on Oct. 18, 1931, Betty was a resident of San Angelo. Betty was a graduate of Mertzon High School and continued her education at Sul Ross and Texas Woman's universities; afterward, and while working in Dallas, she married her high school classmate, Navy Chief Charles Hegwood on Nov. 11, 1962, and relocated to the Philippines. Following Charles' retirement from the Navy, the couple returned to San Angelo where they managed apartments and managed the Old Pulliam Ranch. Betty is survived by her husband, Charles Gene Hegwood of San Angelo; her daughter, Michele ``Missy'' Smith of Austin; her son, Michael Hegwood of Georgetown; her two grandsons, Jonathan Hegwood and Jacob Hegwood of Georgetown; her sister, Helen ``Rusty'' Cox and her husband, J.T. Lew Burnett officiating. Hal was born April 8, 1931, in Ballinger to Bert E. and Ila Evans Bosworth. He was a resident of San Angelo since 1957, a U.S. Air Force veteran and owner of B&D Tile Co. for 37 years. Hal was married to Pansy L. Clendening on Oct. 11, 1958, in San Angelo. Survivors include his wife, Pansy Bosworth of San Angelo; nephews and nieces, Carl Thomas, Linda Thomas, Betty Bingham, Jackie Miller and Laura Burnett; sister-in-law, Kay Peysen; brother-in-law, Lew Burnet; foster daughter, Eloisa Noriega; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. ELBERT WILLIAM CADE ROTAN - Elbert William Cade was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Kent County. He was the son of Elmer and Georgia McCombs Cade. He attended rural schools in Kent County, driving a school bus when he was in high school, and he graduated from Jayton High School. The third generation of Kent County pioneers, he was raised to ranch and farm. When he was a young boy, E.W. became a member of the Methodist Church. On Aug. 20, 1950, E.W. and Tennie Jane Kennedy were united in marriage and made their home in Kent County. In 1952, E.W. was drafted into the United States Army and fought in the Korean War. Sometime after his release from the service in 1954, he and Tennie moved to Stonewall County to make their home and raise their family. E.W. was a member of the Rotan Riding Club and the Rotan Rodeo Association. He raised and showed Appaloosa horses and was a horse show judge. He received his pilot's license in 1964, and he loved taking off into the Wild Blue Yonder! E.W. enjoyed training and hunting with his bird dogs. E.W. served on the Rotan School Board for nine years. He was a Little League coach and always supported the kids - his, and others in their many endeavors. He served on the Stonewall County Appraisal Board for six years. In 1986, E.W. and the Cade family were named Resident Conservation Rancher for Region One by the Texas Conservation Awards program. He and Tennie remained active in ranching and farming, which was a good life throughout the years. E.W. is survived by his wife, Tennie; daughter, Susan, and her husband, Joe; son, Mike, and his wife, Lisa; and daughter, Terri; and three special grandkids, Katy, Clay and Ty. He has two sisters, Ione Cade McKee and Jo Dell Cade Kellett and their families; a sister-in-law, Betty Helms McCright and her families; plus many other family and friends. James Doss was born March 8, 1915, in Weatherford. He was the second child of J.H. Doss and Annie Lee (Goodman) Doss. He was educated in the Weatherford public schools and graduated from Weatherford College in 1934. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1936 and attended the Harvard Graduate School of Business during the 1936-1937 school year. Mr. Doss followed his father's lead in choosing a lifetime career in banking. His father became vice president of Weatherford's Merchants and Farmers State Bank (now Texas Bank) two years before Mr. Doss's birth. Mr. Doss joined the bank in 1929 as a janitor, earning $15 a month. He served the bank as its president from 1945-1955. Afterward he left banking for a career in home building, shopping center development and real estate investment. Mr. Doss returned to the bank and served as chairman of the board for many years and became chairman emeritus in 1998. He recently was named ``Banker of the Year 2000'' by the National Institute of Community Banking. He served as trustee of the Weatherford Independent School District and Weatherford College. For 33 years he was on the board of trustees at Trinity University in San Antonio. In 1976 he was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce. He has held many Presbyterian Church offices including moderator for the Synod of Texas of the Presbyterian Church in the USA in 1964; the first president of the United Presbyterian Foundation Synod of the Sun; a trustee of the National United Presbyterian Foundation in New York City; and a member of the National Presbyterian Church and Center, Washington, D.C. He is the third generation of his family to serve as Presbyterian elder in Parker County. Mr. Doss was a longtime patron of the San Angelo Symphony. His homegoing celebration service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 26, at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Georgia Stone officiating and eulogy by the Rev. Herschel Steger of Temple Baptist Church of Dallas. Interment will be in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Starks Funeral Home. Rufus was born Feb. 16, 1909, in Nacogdoches, Texas, the 14th child of Jim and Sophia Johnson. He served honorably in the United States Army during World War II, being stationed in Italy, England and Africa, during which he received the EAME Campaign Medal with Bronze Stars for the Italian Campaign, before leaving the Army in December 1944. His civilian life began upon returning to Texas in 1945 and opening the Gay Paris Cafe and Randolph Cab Service in San Angelo. In 1949, he began his civil service career with the United States Post Office as the maintenance engineer. He was a familiar face to all who frequented the old downtown Post Office located on the corner of Oakes and Twohig. He served in that capacity until 1975 when he retired after 26 years of service. His retirement was still a working time. Rufus loved the outdoors and spent his retirement years manicuring lawns around San Angelo, walking his beloved Boston terrier, named Prissy, and greeting everyone with a friendly ``hello.'' He never met a stranger and became a friend to all he met. Rufus began serving the Lord at an early age and became a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in 1945. He met the love of his life, Juanita Alexander, and they were married on Aug. 18, 1947, in San Angelo. He was a good man, a loving husband, a wonderful father, a faithful friend and an encourager to all. The family legacy he leaves behind to carry on his smile, his love, his joy and his spirit includes his wife, Juanita; son, Rufus Johnson Jr. and his wife, Betty; daughters, Vanessa K. McKnight and aunt, Della Coffman McKnight in Sonora, Texas. She graduated from San Angelo High School and attended and graduated from Howard Payne University. While at Howard Payne University, Lillian met her future husband. Lillian married Clifton Brooks at the home of S.E. McKnight on Aug. 9, 1931. They ranched in Irion and Crockett counties. They had three sons, Larry Clifton Brooks, William White Brooks and Joe David Brooks, all of Mertzon. Lillian was very involved in charitable and church activities. She was a lifelong Presbyterian. She is survived by her three sons; a sister, Ealen Bray of Dallas; a sister-in-law, Grace White of Eldorado; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one daughter-in-law, Gena Brooks. She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Carol and Damon White; sisters, Lucille McKnight, Lora Stewart and Johnnie Dell Powell. He also was a partner with his son in King Farms and a partner in Walking Hat Cattle Co. He served as a delegate to the National Cotton Council, was director for the Texas Ag Cooperative Council and a lifetime member of the Texas Cotton Ginners Association. He was instrumental in the organization of the Texas Cotton Ginners Trust and served as its first chairman. He was a 4-H adult leader, served on the Rankin ISD school board and the Midkiff Volunteer Fire Department. Family visitation will be Thursday, May 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Johnson's Funeral Home. Clinton was born Oct. 5, 1912, to William Crockett and Minnie Laura White in Cherokee, Texas. His family moved to San Saba, Texas. Clinton was an electrician at Goodfellow Air Force Base for many years. He attended Business Men's Bible Class. Clinton was preceded in death by his wife, Drew Anna; infant son; his parents; two brothers, twin Clarence, and Lee; and two sisters, Lavera and Flora Belle. ROBERT WOODROW WILSON BALLINGER - Robert Woodrow Wilson, 62, of Ballinger died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in Lubbock after a valiant battle with cancer. Robert was born on Aug. 12, 1937, in Ballinger to Woodrow and Loucille Sledge Wilson. He married Barbara Holbrook in Ballinger on May 25, 1968. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger and was extremely proud of his Seekers Sunday School Class. He was a teacher and a rancher. Robert taught in the Ballinger school district for 39« years, sometimes teaching third generation students American and Texas history. He loved teaching and driving the school buses. He was proud to be a charter member of the Ballinger Breakfast Lions Club with 100 percent attendance, serving in several offices. He served with the Texas National Guard for 30 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1990. Robert was preceded in death by his father in 1986. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Barbara Wilson of Ballinger; a son, Alan Wilson of Ballinger; two daughters, Stacie Black and husband, Craig, of Lampasas and Jana Wilson of Lubbock; his mother, Loucille Wilson of Ballinger; a sister, Dorothy Hearn of Ballinger; and his special niece, Susan Hearn of Ballinger. Born March 8, 1918, in Olfen to Joseph and Helena Seidel Fuchs, Arnold was a lifelong resident of Runnels County. He married Agnes Halfmann on September 19, 1940, in Olfen. They were members of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen until moving to Rowena in 1975 where they joined St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Arnold was a charter and lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and received his 50-year pin. He served on the board of directors of Coleman County Electric Co-op for 39 years, was president for 10 years. He served on the board of the Federal Land Bank for 25 years and on the St. Boniface Church board for numerous years. Arnold loved to farm and was an avid sportsman. He umpired an untold number of Little League games and loved hunting, fishing, skat and dominoes. His greatest love was his family. He took great pride and joy in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. SOTO Honofre G. Soto (H.G. Soto) went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 26, 2000, in a local hospital. He was born on June 27, 1913, Knickerbocker, Texas, to Genaro and Casiana Soto. He grew up in Knickerbocker before moving to San Angelo in 1938. He was well-known for his fence building and shearing contracting in New Mexico and Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Genaro and Casiana Soto; two sisters, Bene Soto and Antonio Soto; four brothers, Tomas Soto, Vidal Soto, Cornelio Soto and Segundo Soto; and a brother-in-law, L.D. Cano. Thomas was born Jan. 31, 1939, in Hylton, Texas. He moved with his family to San Angelo in 1941. He went to school at John H. Reagan, Thomas Edison and San Angelo High School and graduated with the class of 1957. Thomas joined the Navy August 1957 and retired Dec. 29, 1979. He is survived by his wife, Welhelmina of 2256 Anapanapa, Pearl City, Hawaii 96782; sons, Thomas Michael Connally and wife, Serena, of Lubbock, David M. ERNEST LEE STEWART HASKELL - Ernest Lee Stewart, of Abilene died Friday, May 26, 2000, of congestive heart failure at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. He was born Jan. 27, 1915, in Breckenridge, Texas, the eldest son of Norman M. Stewart and his wife, Haughty Brien Stewart. Mr. Stewart was a lifelong resident of Texas, living in Haskell for 20 years before moving to Abilene in 1994. While raising his family in Amarillo in the early 1940s, he became employed by the Santa Fe Railway in 1943. While in their employ he was transferred to Lubbock, Slaton and San Angelo, retiring as yardmaster in Hamlin in 1978 with over 35 years of service. Before his illness, he spent many happy hours golfing and was a member of several senior bowling leagues. Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Florine Stewart of Abilene, to whom he was wed in February 1997. He also is survived by two sons, Jimmie L. Stewart of Northport, Ala.; and Bill D. Stewart of San Juan Capistrano, Calif. Also surviving are his siblings, William I. Stewart of Benbrook, Alvin N. Stewart and S. Frances Huddleston, both of El Monte, Calif., and A.J. Stewart of Arlington; two grandsons, Anthony L. Stewart of Coker, Ala., and Robin L. Stewart of Northport; and two great-grandchildren, Sara and Steven Stewart of San Angelo.
