Gifford, 65, retired maintenance supervisor of the Junction Highway Department and goat rancher, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in Sid Peterson Hospital in Kerrville following a courageous battled with lung and brain cancer. He was born April 2, 1935, in Fredonia, Mason County, Texas, to Thomas A. and Maude E. Cromeans Gifford. After moving with his family to Kimble on Feb. 21, 1937, Chuck became a member of the Roosevelt Presbyterian Church and became a member of the Roosevelt Boy Scout Troop No. 420. Church began school in Junction and he shared his first day and many years of school with people who became lifelong friends. He graduated from Junction High School on May 22, 1953. Chuck began working with the Junction Highway Department after graduation, but the job quickly ended when Chuck was called to duty by the U.S. draft board on Feb. 5, 1957. He served two years in the U.S. Army in Germany and Lebanon and he spent another two years in the reserves before being discharged as staff sergeant on Dec. 31, 1962. Even while Chuck was away serving his country, he made sure to honor his mother with an allotment so she did not have to work during his absence. On Oct. 21, 1969, Charles was united in marriage to Florence Eva Adams in Kerrville, Texas. Chuck enjoyed a brief career in the trucking business in which he would take his wife and his truck, Claudine, on the long route from Maine to Seattle. During this time he patiently taught his new wife how to drive a big rig. In May 1970, Mr. Gifford decided that the life of a truck driver was not for a married man, and he again pursued a career in the highway department where he was responsible for coordinating the actions of a crew of workers. In hopes of ranching, Chuck purchased the land in the Cedar Creek area on Aug. 29, 1972. With the help of his brother and a small crew, Chuck put his house in dry. He and his wife, then finished building their home and moved in during the year of 1974. They began breeding a fine line of Angora goats and in the spirit of a good rancher, Mr. Gifford ran a fair goat business, helped his neighbors in need and was a hard worker. He was known for helping friends move bales of hay out of the rain, trading work with other ranchers and spending sleepless nights helping nanny goats through the birthing process. After 33 years of employment, Mr. Gifford retired form the highway department on Sept. 30, 1993, and began spending time working his land. He continued nursing his goats and began hauling Alfalfa hay in his truck, Lil' Red. He also made sure to spend time with family and friends. During this time, family members remember Chuck as gracious for the little things in life. His niece remembers him enjoying a bucket of stackers he received for Christmas. She recalls Chuck enjoying a simple five-gallon bucket so much that he would not let anyone touch it. Chuck Gifford was a member of the Men's Bible Class in which he served several terms as president. He was a long term member of the Easter pageant where he portrayed high priests to Satan. During his years in the pageant, he trained new actors, helped clear the pageant grounds and held many other duties. For many years he shared the hill with his sister and niece. His niece says that she remembers those days on the hill with her uncle as some of the best times of her life. Chuck was her ``powerful leader'' and her ``favorite playmate.'' Mr. Gifford was a member of the Junction City Masonic Lodge No. 548 AF & AM. He was initiated into the lodge on Jan. 5, 1978, and was installed into the Grand Lodge in Waco as district deputy grand master for District 54 on Dec. 7, 1985. He was also initiated into the Eastern Star Junction Chapter on May 10, 1979. He served as that organization's worthy patron for 1985-1986, 1992-1994, and served as associate patron several times. Chuck is survived by his wife, Eva, and his sister, Rachel Lorene Gifford Bruns of Roosevelt. He is further survived by nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Lillian Louise Gifford Dodd, Hazel Mae Gifford Garner and Clara Sue Gifford Murray; and brothers, Thomas A. Gifford Jr. and Winford Dale Gifford. Upon Mr. Gifford's death, his corneas were donated to the eye bank. Just as he had given to all his friends and acquaintances during his life, he wished to share the gift of sight with others. Memorial and Masonic services for Charles F. Gifford will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Aubrey Fife Funeral Home. The Rev. Sam Coffee will officiate. Burial will be in Adams/Tuff Cemetery in Bandera County. Gifford, 65, retired maintenance supervisor of the Junction Highway Department and goat rancher, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, in Sid Peterson Hospital in Kerrville following a courageous battle with lung and brain cancer. 420. Chuck began school in Junction and he shared his first day and many years of school with people who became lifelong friends. Gifford retired from the highway department on Sept. He was a long-term member of the Easter pageant where he portrayed high priests to Satan. Gifford were Thursday, Aug. 10, at Aubrey Fife Funeral Home with the Rev. Sam Coffee officiating. Burial was in Adams/Tuff Cemetery in Bandera County.
