Celey, 65, of Morgantown died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at home after a lengthy illness. He was born June 22, 1935, in Hobbs, N.M., the son of the late Thomas and Launa Dinman Celey Boyer. Barry (Jones) graduated from San Angelo Central High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Navy for 24 years, as part of the White House staff, from 1963 to 1968 under the Kennedy and Johnson administration. He retired from Monongalia General Hospital Facilities Management Department in 1993. He was a member and past exalted ruler of Morgantown Elks Lodge No. 411. He is survived by his wife, Gladys ``Freddie'' Celey; two sons and spouses, Steve and Angel Celey of Morgantown and Joel and Wendy Celey of Heyworth, Ill.; a daughter, Deborah Celey of Maysville; three granddaughters, Nicole, Ann Marie and Tayler Beth Celey; and a grandson, Barry V. HILARIA MEDRANO ALMANZA ODESSA - Hilaria Medrano Almanza, 73 years of age, passed away on Aug. 14, 2000, at her Odessa residence. She was born on Dec. 6, 1926, in Hobbs, Texas. She graduated from Hobbs High School and attended Odessa College. She owned and operated La Villita Cafe in downtown Odessa for 11 years until her retirement in 1989. She married Pedro Almanza on June 10, 1944, in Rotan, Texas, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mrs. Almanza was loved dearly by all of her family and friends. She was called "Mother" even by those who were not related to her. She was a very caring person. Mother always took the time to take care of others no matter how busy she was. She was a great cook and loved cooking for everyone. She volunteered with the hospital auxiliary at Medical Center Hospital. WILLIAM H. REES JR. STANTON - Following a lengthy, courageous battle with cancer, Rill Rees lost his fight for life on this earth Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at his home in Stanton. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 in Trinity Memorial Park in Big Spring. Pastor Donald Hafemann of Grace Lutheran Church in Midland will officiate. Bill was born July 23, 1928, in Yale, Payne County, Okla., to William H. and Marquerette Rees, who both preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were two daughters, Cathy Straub and Beverly Merwin. Bill served in the Korean War and retired from Sohio Petroleum. He was an independent contract pumper at the time of his death. He married Barbara Merwin on May 8, 1971, in Rankin, where they made their home until moving to Stanton in 1973. His life was centered around his family. Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara Rees of Stanton; a daughter and son-in-law, Mindy and Sherman Pierce of Midland; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William H. Rees III and Linda of Big Lake, and Robert Rees of Arlington; five grandchildren, Brian Pierce of Midland, Staci Pierce of San Marcos, Jennifer Pierce of San Antonio, Jason Straub of Greenwood and Eric Rees of Big Lake; a brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Sharon and their families of Aiken, S.C.; his father-in-law, Earl M. MERLE CLATTERBUCK Our beloved Merle left this life on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, to go home. She was at home at the time of death with family members. The family will be receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, at Robert Massie Funeral Home. She was the last of five sisters, who preceded her in death. On Dec. 25, 1925, she and Farest Clatterbuck were married in Columbia, Mo. In December of 1939 they moved to San Angelo where they owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store, Sunset Market. In 1947 they opened and operated Clatterbuck Laundry and Dry Cleaners, having several substations throughout San Angelo until 1970 when they retired. Merle became a member of the First Baptist Church in December 1939. She was a charter member of the Elizabeth Sunday school class since 1956 and held every office in the class. She was secretary until March 1998. Merle also was a member of the Golden Bell Choir and the Glory Choir for 17 years. She had many highlights in her life and one was a trip to Santa Alena, Mexico, with the Rev. James Andrews, Lyndel and Janette Vaught and a group of young people. She helped cook for the group. It inspired her so to see the young children so happy. She loved her church and her friends there. She always did for others; never thinking of anything in return and never spoke a bad word against anyone. Merle was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend, always there for those who needed her. Her caring love will be missed be all. The family wishes to thank Dr. Kenneth Rose, her physician, and Judy, his nurse; Hospice of San Angelo for all the kind loving care they provided, especially Karen Jordan, Jean Slaughter, Anita McDuffie, Becky Isaacs, Debbie Bishop, Teresa Hamilton and John Epperson, who spent several hours with Merle and the family over the weekend; Lydia Moya, a volunteer from Concho Valley Agency on Aging, who was loyal and faithful and gave tender loving care for almost a year and Dorothy McCormick from Outreach, who none of us could have done without. When the war was over, she married Gilbert Strube on Feb. 11, 1947, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. She and Gilbert settled in the Wall community where they farmed for 53 years. She was an active member of her community and her church, where she was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Hugo John Mees; one sister, Almola Mees; and her daughter, Ann Strube Fuchs. GEORGE DAVID SCOTT SWEETWATER - George David Scott, 69, of San Angelo and formerly of Sweetwater, passed away Thursday Aug. 17, 2000, at his residence. Arrangements are by McCoy Funeral Home. George David Scott was born Feb. 16, 1931, in Nolan County. He attended ADA school, Highland School and graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1948. He received his master's of education in 1972 from West Texas State University, which has since become West Texas A&M University and George was proud to be an Aggie by proclamation. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War and was aboard the USS Norfolk and the USS Miller. After various other occupations, he taught at Midland High School for 10 years and Hobbs Alternative School for Sweetwater Independent School District where he retired on May 31, 2000. He was the grandson of one of Sweetwater's pioneers, William Tignor "Uncle Tig" Scott and will be buried in the Ross Cemetery which is on the land donated by his great-grandfather, John Ross. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Sweetwater until his move to San Angelo where he became a member of Southland Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Lois June Scott of San Angelo; a son, Randy Scott of Houston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cyndye and Kim Batchelor of Sonora and Debra and Robert Gibbons of Katy; two grandsons, Chris Scott and wife, Elisha, of San Angelo and Matthew Batchelor of Sonora. He was proud especially of his two great-granddaughters, Autumn Joy Scott and Hannah Noelle Scott, both of San Angelo. JOHN COTE Following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer, John Cote, 43, of San Angelo lost his fight for life on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at his home in San Angelo. John was born Feb. 10, 1957, to Rudolph and Jeanette Cote in Plainfield, Conn. John was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force for six years. He married Mary G. Rodriguez on Aug. 22, 1984, in San Angelo. He worked as a production tech for Ethicon, and was a member of Full Gospel Assembly of God. John is survived by his wife, Mary Cote of San Angelo; three children, Shawn Cote of San Angelo, Raymarie Rodriguez of Dallas and Raymon Rodriguez of Del Rio; parents, Rudolph and Jeanette Cote of Plainfield; one sister, Janis Pollock of North Smithfield, R.I.; one brother, Richard Cote of Montville, Conn.; two grandchildren, Brittani Rodriguez of Dallas and Briana Rodriguez of Del Rio; and his loving pet companion, Hooch. He came to Big Spring in 1932 and worked for the Texas and Pacific Railroad for 35 and a half years as a switchman until retiring. Mr. Hood was member of First Church of the Nazarene and the United Transportation Union.
