Services are pending at Fort Stockton Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries IRIS BALES BRYAN BALLINGER - Iris Bryan passed away early Thursday morning, Aug. 31, 2000, at her residence. Iris is survived by her dear husband, Alton Bryan, who has cared for her so lovingly; by her son, Brad Alton Bryan and wife, Terri, of Lubbock; by two daughters, Sunny Bryan Higgins and husband, Don, of Abilene and Carolyn Bryan Parker and husband, Pete, of Port Aransas. She also is survived by her eight grandchildren, Conda Holt Richards, Ruth Ann Herridge, Alisa Richards West, Sommer Bryan Hamilton, Brandon Lee Bryan, Bryan Lee Higgins, Megan Lee Cole and David Michael Bryan; three great-grandchildren, Kyler Holt Richards, Madison Bayleigh Hamilton and Riley Virgil West; her mother, Louise Fletcher of Ballinger; her brother, Don Bales and wife, Myrtie, of Hatchel; and her sister, Anne Virgadamo and husband, Frank, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; and one very special friend, Nell Davis. Iris was preceded in death by her father, Wirt Bales in 1967. Iris was born to Wirt and Louise Bales on Sept. 28, 1931. She was raised in the Hatchel community and graduated as valedictorian of Ballinger High School in 1947. She attended North Texas State College in Denton and in 1948 began working at the First National Bank of Ballinger where she worked for 48 years. She married Alton Bryan on Jan. 22, 1950. Iris and Alton own Bryan Jewelers, Curiosities and CBS Jewelers. They received the Outstanding Business Award from the Ballinger Chamber of Commerce in 1994, which serves as a testament to all of the hard work they have always put forth in their community. Iris was a longtime, faithful member of the Ninth Street Church of Christ, where her beautiful singing voice will be greatly missed. She also was the treasurer of the Ballinger Woman's Club, where she served until her illness disabled her. Iris touched many lives while in business because of her never-ending desire to help people, her welcoming smile and her warm personality. She will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends, and her hopefulness, optimism and courage during her long battle with cancer will never be forgotten. Memorials may be made to VistaCare Family Hospice or the Joe Forester Scholarship. Mrs. Lindsey was born July 5, 1924, in Soper, Okla. She married Harry Daniel Lindsey Jr. in December 1941 in Soper. He preceded her in death in 1995. Maxine was a retired employee of the San Angelo Credit Bureau and recently was working in the health care field by sitting with elderly who needed assistance. MARGARET HILL HENDERSON Margaret Hill Henderson passed peacefully into the arms of God Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000. Williamson and Oran Williamson. She married E.S. ``Speck'' Hill Feb. 25, 1946. He preceded her in death in 1966 leaving her with five young children to raise. That led her to begin her career as a childcare provider. Over the years, Margaret provided care for hundreds of children in the San Angelo area until her retirement in July 1989. In 1978 she married Thomas Henderson who preceded her in death in 1991. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ronnie Laughlin and the Rev. Tom Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Bob was born June 15, 1921, in La Porte. Bob enlisted in the Army Reserves on Jan. 6, 1941, in Meda, Ark. He was called to active duty and saw action in North Africa, Italy, France, Germany and Austria. Upon discharge, Bob attended Southern Methodist University and graduated from North Texas State University, where he met and married Ruby Lee Slayden on Sept. 3, 1948. They moved to Dallas and Texarkana. In Texarkana, son Don Bruce was born. Bob began his career with GTE Yellow Pages in 1952 and was transferred to San Angelo in 1954. In 1982, Bob retired with great anticipation. He spent his time working with Downtown Kiwanis, where he served as lieutenant governor for two years. He helped with Central High School Key Club. Bob was past president of Christmas in April and served on the board for many years. Bob also delivered Meals for Elderly. His favorite place to be was their home in Mason County, where he taught his two grandsons to drive the tractor and commune with nature. His final days were spent with his family, friends and all the people he touched throughout his life. Bob was a member of First Baptist Church and the Kings Men Sunday School Class. Bob was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Fred T. Buchholz of Garland; one brother, Fred Buchholz of Austin; and one sister, Gwen Heinen of Garland. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Lee Buchholz of San Angelo; his son and daughter-in-law, Don and Beth Lieber Buchholz of San Angelo; his grandsons, Douglas C. and Matthew W. JERRY CARL HALMON MIDLAND Jerry Carl Holman was born Nov. 4, 1952, in San Angelo to Robert Gerald Halmon and Cleta Elton Buttry Halmon. On May 31, 1989, he married Renata Joy Kinney in Midland. ANNA HELEN FUCHS DANKWORTH BALLINGER Anna Helen Fuchs Dankworth, 92, of Ballinger, went to be with her Lord on Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, in her home surrounded by family. Anna was born July 6, 1908, in Olfen, to Joseph and Helena Seidel Fuchs. She lived in the Olfen Community until her marriage to Charles E. Dankworth on Nov. 3, 1927. They lived in the Ballinger-Bethel community where they raised their eight children. Anna was a woman of many talents, always thinking of the needs of her household and others. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen and St. Mary Catholic Church of Ballinger, a member of the Home Demonstration Club for 62 years, and was also active in the Catholic Daughters and in the Altar Society. She sold Avon for 20 years and loved being with her friends and serving the public. Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting, cooking and playing dominoes. She was truly a virtuous woman, one that kept her faith and trust in God. Her favorite saying was, You must forgive and keep on going. This she practiced faithfully. She was preceded in death by two sons, infant Charles E. Jr. and Charles J. Dankworth; and a grandson, Jay Gregory Goetz. Anna is survived by her husband, Charles E. Dankworth of Ballinger; her children, Laverne and D.J. Anna was born July 6, 1908, in Olfen to Joseph and Helena Seidel Fuchs. She lived in the Olfen Community until her marriage to Charles E. Dankworth on Nov. 3, 1927. They lived in the Ballinger-Bethel community where they raised their eight children. Anna was a woman of many talents, always thinking of the needs of her household and others. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen and St. Marys Catholic Church of Ballinger, a member of the Home Demonstration Club for 62 years, and was also active in the Catholic Daughters and in the Altar Society. She sold Avon for 20 years and loved being with her friends and serving the public. Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting, cooking and playing dominoes. She was truly a virtuous woman, one that kept her faith and trust in God. Her favorite saying was, You must forgive and keep on going. This she practiced faithfully. She was preceded in death by two sons, infant Charles E. Jr. and Charles J. Dankworth; and a grandson, Jay Gregory Goetz. Anna is survived by her husband, Charles E. Dankworth of Ballinger; her children, Laverne and D.J. Sam was born Sept. 13, 1917, in Russellville, Ky., to Samuel S. Long Sr. and Eunice Brown Long. He graduated from Irvine High School in 1936 and Eastern Kentucky State University in 1941, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics. He did graduate work in management at the University of Kentucky, University of Michigan, Southern Methodist University and Angelo State University. In 1941, Sam began teaching in the new Estill Co. High School (KY) and was also a freshman basketball coach. He entered active duty in the Army in January 1942, as a second lieutenant. He was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant in May 1944. Following a one-year tenure at Lexington Signal Depot (KY), he was hired by General Telephone (later GTE). After a series of promotions, he was made operating vice president of General Telephone of Kentucky in 1956. He served as president of the Kentucky Independent Telephone Pioneer Association (ITPA) and president of the Kentucky Telephone Association. In 1958, he accepted a transfer to General Telephone Co. of the Southwest in San Angelo to organize and build the first marketing and sales department for a six-state area. Among his many accomplishments was the awarding of the DFW Airport telephone contract to GTE. As a member of the Pioneers, he eventually became regional vice president over eight states and was on the national executive board. He organized 40 clubs and created the nationally-distributed manual for organizing Pioneer Clubs. He retired from GTE in 1975. He was inducted into the Texas Telephone Hall of Fame in 1985. Some of his accomplishments, awards and clubs are as follows: He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 570, a Shriner, a Lion, a Kentucky Colonel, an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy, an elder at St. Marks Presbyterian Church, chairman of a West Texas Savings Bond Drive and was named JayCee Boss of the Year in San Angelo in 1969. Sam was very active in local politics and attended meetings of the city council when possible (sitting on the front row and frequently voicing his opinion). He also often voiced his opinions in letters to the editor in the San Angelo Standard-Times. Sam was a humanitarian with a desire to help people. His love and interest in children involved him in the organization and construction of a Little League baseball field and a recreation center in Lexington, Ky. In recent times, he loved reading about local citizens (and childrens) accomplishments in the newspaper and sending letters of encouragement and congratulations. He also had a gift for getting things done for others. Sam loved life and everyone in it. He loved to travel, the Dallas Cowboys, thoroughbred horse racing, UK Basketball and Las Vegas. But what he enjoyed most of all was his family. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Stephen Long. He was born to Clara Jones Smith and James Archibald Smith on Jan. 3, 1906, in Temple. He graduated from Roscoe High School in 1924 and from Texas A&M College in 1928 with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed by Empire Oil and Refrigeration Co. of Bartlesville, Okla., as a junior engineer in 1928. The name of the company changed to Cities Service Oil Co. in 1937. After a year on the training program he transferred to the Oil Production Department. He attended Colombia University Advanced Management School in 1954. He retired after 41 years as a director and vice president of the Oil Production Department of Cities Service in 1968. In 1930 he married Edaline Mildred Coulter at the ranch home near Leon, Kan. They made their first home on an oil lease south of Seminole, Okla., resided in Oklahoma City, Bartlesville, Odessa, and retired on a small ranch near Kerrville in 1968, and later moved to town. He was a member of Rotary for 60 years, having joined in March 1940 in Odessa. He was also a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Kerrville and Texas A&M Century Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Carol Petoff; his only brother, Harrie Archibald Smith; a nephew, Harrie A. Smith, and his beloved wife, Edaline Coulter Smith, in December of 1994. A lifetime member of Girl Scouts of USA, Marcia was involved in the El Camino Girl Scout Council from 1978 to 1999. She volunteered in El Camino as a troop leader, master trainer, service unit director and event director. Marcia was recognized as an Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in 1991 and received the Thanks Badge in 1992. From 1993 until 1999, she was employed by the El Camino Girl Scout Council and held the following positions: secretary, field and training director and administrative service and communication director. Marcia was a truly outstanding volunteer and staff member, who lived by the Girl Scout promise and law, in everything she did. Marcia was a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, which is a fraternal service organization for young women. Rainbow Girls help others by participating in service projects and learn that helping those less fortunate is one of life's greatest rewards. Members can hold many different offices in Rainbow. They gain practical knowledge, confidence and grace. A girl may be elected to advance through four offices; Faith, Hope, Charity, Worthy Associate Advisor to reach the highest office in an Assembly, Worthy Advisor. Marcia was awarded the Grand Cross of Color, which is the highest recognition to a girl for her service and commitment to service. Marcia's grandparents and a brother preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving husband, Evan Ralph of Buda; two daughters, Desarae Ralph of San Angelo and Shawna Ralph of Buda; and a very special grandson, Ethan Ralph of Buda. Marcia also leaves behind her father, Billy C. Quinn of San Antonio; mother, Dolores Steichen Quinn of San Antonio; her brother, Glynn Quinn and wife, Sandra, of Castroville; and brothers, Stephen Quinn and Mark Quinn of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews. MARTIN H. BENSON Martin H. Benson, 82, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, in Robert Lee Care Center. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, in Evergreen Cemetery in Ballinger. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Martin was born March 11, 1918, in Runnels County to C.C. and Grace Benson. Martin was a resident of San Angelo since 1954 and was a retired car salesman, earning several awards and was a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of the Church of Christ for which he served as an elder and deacon for 20 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by his family and many friends. Martin was married to Tommie Riddle on Jan. 2, 1937, in San Angelo. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Tommie Benson of San Angelo; three children, Bill Benson and wife, Beverly, Lynell Seaton and husband, John, and Larry Benson and wife, Ginny, all of San Angelo; one sister, Trudy Gresham of Odessa; five grandchildren, Tammy Wankowski of Okinawa, Japan, Billy Benson Jr. and Therran Benson, both of San Angelo, Dawn Wessman of Knoxville, Tenn., and Josh Seaton of Sugar Land; and six great-grandchildren. JEANNINE MIKESKA KERRVILLE - Mrs. Jeannine Mikeska, 67, of Kerrville passed away Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at her residence. She was born March 12, 1933, in Cherokee and had been a Kerrville resident for 71/[2] years, formerly residing in Copperas Cove. She was a retired business owner and banker. She was a member of the San Antonio Church of God. She married Billy Mikeska on April 25, 1993, in Copperas Cove. Survivors include her husband, Billy Mikeska of Kerrville; daughter, Julie Jacqueline Stefek and husband, William Wayne Stefak, of Killeen; stepdaughter, Adotia Rode of Castell; four stepsons, Bill Dudley Mikeska of Blanco, Charles Wayne Mikeska of Fort Stockton, Mitchel Lee Mikeska of Kerrville and Scott Logan Mikeska of San Angelo; 22 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. DONALD EUGENE GALLION Donald Eugene Gallion, 65, of San Angelo passed away Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, in Shannon Medical Center. Donald was born Sept. 11, 1934, in Franklin Furnace, Ohio, to Ellis and Gladys Gallion. He married Joy Lee Shaw Aug. 20, 1955, in West Palm Beach, Fla. He retired after 20 years with the U.S. Air Force. He was a Vietnam veteran and a Bronze Star recipient. Donald was manager at Gibbon's and worked for Texas Certified Security. PATRICIA HELEN O'REAR ROBERTSON Patricia Helen O'Rear Robertson, 83, of San Angelo died Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, in a local hospital. Service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Father John Loving and Father Bob Hedges officiating. There will be a private family burial. Arrangements are by Robert Massie Funeral Home. She was born April 9, 1917, in Jasper, Ala., to Lulu Dodd O'Rear and Caine O'Rear Sr. She attended the women's college in Montevallo, Ala., (now the University of Montevallo) for two years and later graduated from McMurry University in Abilene. She also earned a master's degree from Angelo State University. She taught for more than 25 years at McGill Elementary School in San Angelo, teaching second through fifth grades and retiring in 1981. She was dedicated to education all of her adult life, serving as president of the San Angelo Classroom Teachers Association, being honored as San Angelo's Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 1967, and remaining an active member of the retired teachers organization and Delta Kappa Gamma until her death. In addition to her lifelong participation in education, she was an energetic member and officer of many other organizations. She continued to be an active member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the San Angelo Garden Club, Goodfellow Officers' Wives, the Democratic Party, Daughters of the American Revolution and several bridge clubs. She never missed an opportunity to be of service to others and she thoroughly enjoyed all of these activities and the people she met through them. She will be remembered for her beautiful energy, her love of people, her amazing memory, her organizational skills, her trustworthy character and her zest for life as well as for countless wonderful moments she spent with her friends and family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John Murray Robertson, an architect whom she married on March 28, 1938; and by her eldest daughter, Patricia Murray Robertson Baker, an award-winning San Angelo teacher. Survivors include a sister, Emmalu O'Rear Foy and her husband, James Foy, of Auburn, Ala.; a brother, Caine O'Rear Jr. and his wife, Kathryn O'Rear, of Jasper, Ala.; a daughter, Paula Robertson-Rose and her husband, William Rose, of Austin; son-in-law, Weldon Baker of Grape Creek; granddaughter, Stacy Baker Carson and her husband, Jim Carson, of San Angelo; grandson, Warren Baker and his wife, Tracie Baker, of Grape Creek; granddaughter, Lindsay Rose of Austin; grandson, Lincoln Rose of Austin and Lexington, Va.; great-grandchildren, Murray Carson, Casey Carson and Katelyn Baker; and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial contributions may be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church or to a charity of choice. JOE MEDFORD Joe Medford, 91, of San Angelo died Wednesday morning, Sept, 6, 2000, in Shannon Medical Center. Joe was born March 22, 1909, in Anson to Charlie and Ruth Medford. He married Frances Hutchinson on Sept. 2, 1937, in Paris, Texas. Joe moved to Odessa in 1939 and was employed by West Texas Rig Company and McCain Rig Company. Joe was a member of the First Baptist Church in Odessa for 56 years. He moved, with his wife, to San Angelo in 1995 and became a member of the First Baptist Church in San Angelo. He was loved and respected by his family and friends. Every family member knew of his love for them. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gervaise Medford and Perry Medford; and two sisters, Louise Hardeman and Opal Hobbs. Survivors include his wife, Frances Medford of San Angelo; two daughters, Jo Ann Noble and husband, David, of San Angelo, and Jeanette Gardner and husband, Harold, of Lawton, Okla.; four grandchildren, Jenny Pinson and husband, Eddie, of Snyder, Penny Hamlett and husband, John, of Sugar Land, Christie Mello and husband, Chip, of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Trey Gardner of Plano; five great-grandchildren, Wade Pinson, Garrett Pinson and Reid Pinson, all of Snyder, and Sydney Hamlett and Claire Hamlett, both of Sugar Land; a sister, Imogene Teague of Lamesa; two brothers, Seldon Medford and wife, Mabel, of Clarksville and Jim Ed Medford and wife, Pauline, of Kerrville; and numerous nieces and nephews. ANDRES SAENZ SANCHEZ Andres Saenz Sanchez, 93, of San Angelo and formerly of Borger, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at his residence. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. George Varakukala officiating. Burial will follow in Knickerbocker Cemetery. Mr. Sanchez was born Nov. 30, 1906, in Knickerbocker. He married Josephine Gomez and she preceded him in death. He worked as an insulator for Phillips 66 Oil Co. until he retired in 1965. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Knickerbocker and was a longtime resident of Borger. He also was preceded in death by one son, Andy Sanchez. Mr. Sanchez is survived by three sons, Joe Sanchez and Dennis Sanchez, both of Amarillo, and George Sanchez of Colorado City; three daughters, Elida Granger of Amarillo, Elisa Chavez and Elena Freudiger, both of Borger; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. EMERSON RAY CLARK Emerson Ray Clark, 57, of Mertzon died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at his residence. Funeral service will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mertzon Cemetery. Ray was born June 15, 1943, in San Angelo to Raymond and Jessie Montgomery Clark. Mr. Clark married Shirlee Ann Barnes Nov. 1, 1975. Ray was a lifelong rancher, avid hunter and professional guide in Texas and New Mexico, a wagon boss for West Texas Boys Ranch and team captain of the Ranch Rodeo representing Irion County. He was a member and officer of the New Mexico Mounted Patrol. Ray also was active in the Irion County 4-H Club and the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup. Ray was a devoted and loving husband, son, father and friend. Survivors include his mother, Jessie Clark, and his wife, Shirlee Ann Clark, both of Mertzon; two daughters, Cindy Rae Clark of Austin and Ashlee Bree Clark of Mertzon; two sons, Raymond Len Clark and his wife, Dana Rene, of Austin and Trey Adam Clark of Mertzon; three nieces, Susan Renae Bryant of Austin, Leslyn Gay Tyler and her husband, Thomas, and their daughters, Danielle and Kristin, all of Mertzon, and Karen Sherae Travland and her husband, Lewis, and their son, Chase; and his constant companion, "Dawg"; and many extended family and friends.
