During the lean years in the 1920s-30s, he dropped out of school to join the Civilian Conservation Corps in El Paso, proud to have a good job. He laughingly recounted later in his life that this was the only job he ever was "fired" from, and that it was because he was single at a time when so many family men needed jobs more than he. Dogie finally graduated high school from Water Valley in 1936 and then went on to West Texas Teachers' College in Canyon, Texas. He was hired later to teach at the school in Grape Creek, where he served as principal, teacher and janitor. Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, Dogie enlisted in the Navy and was trained as a pharmacist's mate and in December 1941, he was assigned to the 3rd Marine Corps Battalion as a medical corpsman. He served through the war in the Pacific at Palau, Guadalcanal, Saipan and Bougainville and was known as "Doc" by his WWII buddies. After discharge from the Navy and a stint with the Merchant Marines, he returned to San Angelo where he met and married Lucille Ormsby, a widow newly arrived from Akron, Ohio, with her son, Terry. Dogie continued his education under the GI Bill and obtained his BA and master's degrees in vocational agriculture from Sul Ross University and Sam Houston College. He put his education to work as a teacher in Big Lake until 1951, when he was recruited to work for the U.S. Foreign Service as an agricultural adviser in an organization later known as the Agency for International Development. His foreign service assignments took him and his family to Egypt, Guatemala and Honduras during the 1950s-60s. He also served as a foreign student adviser with HEW in Washington, D.C., and with the United Nations International Labor Organization in Venezuela, Peru and Switzerland. In 1969, Dogie and Lucille returned to Texas and he resumed his teaching career in Olney, Texas, until they retired to Lampasas. Lucille died in November 1993. Three Way of Love "Mario's, Rosie's, and Cookie's" A thought in my head that was just a blur and just a blind date. Not know I was being awakened by her beautiful smile and her independence. Dominating my heart and mind, avoiding everything surrounding us, wrapping thy arms around her body, touching her with an unexpected kiss that caressed her lips. It became an unquestioned relationship, desire becoming one with her not knowing its consequence. Bearing a prince beneath her heart now we found ourselves in deep love, a memorable feeling that will never vanish from my heart. Assuring thy unconditional love to my beloved one submitting myself to him in every way. My everlasting love belongeth to my wife, who I cherish with my life!
