Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Reynolds, pastor of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church officiating. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25, in Mount Hope Cemetery in Wells with the Rev. Jamie Lea, pastor of Wells Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Dick was born Aug. 21, 1917, in Wells, Cherokee County and attended Wells High School. His working career began in his late teens when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, a work program started during the Depression by President Roosevelt. He was paid $30 a month, of which he kept $5 and sent the rest to his parents. In 1939 he joined the U.S. Corps of Engineers in the Galveston District. He took a leave of absence to join the Navy in 1944. He was assigned to the Lycoming, a troop carrier that was commissioned on Sept. 20, 1944, and was sent immediately to participate in the invasion of the Philippines. Its most harrowing duty was the invasion of Okinawa in April of 1945 where it dodged the attacks of Kamikaze pilots. Dick piloted a landing craft, ferrying troops to the beach and later they ferried occupation troops into Nagasaki, not long after the dropping of the atomic bomb. He was discharged from the Navy on Dec. 28, 1945, and returned to the U.S. Corps of Engineers, working in the Fort Worth district. Dick was a survey engineer, surveying for airports, dams and various government projects all over Texas. In 1954, he was assigned to the North Concho Dam project, now O.C. Fisher State Park, where he remained until he retired in May 1977. His hobbies were numerous. He was a member of the NRA and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting elk in Colorado and Arizona, antelope in Wyoming and deer, quail, dove, pheasants and even squirrel in Texas. One of his nicknames was One Shot. The deep freeze was always full. He also enjoyed fishing and don't forget golf, a fun sport. Another hobby was dancing. He was a member of La Paloma Dance Club for more than 40 years and served as president for two terms. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge on Aug. 24, 1953, raised to a Master Mason on Nov. 30, 1953, and joined Suez Temple in 1961. He was a member of the Motor Corps and later the parade unit. In 1975, he was president of the Concho Shrine Club. He also belonged to Concho Lodge 1260, Commandery 28 Knights Templar, Chapter 170 and Council 110. Dick was a member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. He married Bert Sims Carter on April 30, 1971. Dick and Bert truly enjoyed traveling, towing the Airstream. Dick was the pilot and Bert the navigator, seeing the great U.S. from Maine to Florida and Canada to Mexico. In 1979, they built a summer cabin in the White Mountains of Arizona where they enjoyed golf, trout fishing and a wonderful group of friends for 15 years. Dick said he didn't know how to build a house but Bert said sure you do, I'll help. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Jewell Odom; his parents, Gus and Liddie Julia Brewer; brothers, Jack and Henry Brewer; sisters, Lillie Mae DuBose, Myrtie Anderson, Emma Lott and Mary Brown. Survivors include his wife, Bert Brewer of the home; stepdaughter, Janis Raynor of Baltimore; stepson, Jim Carter and wife, Mary, of Sisterdale; granddaughters, Jessica DeMotte and husband, Michael, of Fort Worth, Amanda Raynor of Baltimore; grandsons, Jimmy Carter and Ryan Carter of El Paso and Cade Carter of Sisterdale; one brother, Hollis Brewer of Houston; one great-grandson, Chase Carter Raynor of Baltimore; one great-granddaughter, Anna Noel DeMotte of Fort Worth; seven nephews; five nieces; and a host of friends. NILA LINDSEY LUCE FORT STOCKTON - Nila Marie Lindsey Luce, 79, left this life experience Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2000, at 1:15 pm. at her adopted home, Rio Concho Manor, in San Angelo. She was born April 19, 1921, in Lohn, Texas, McCulloch County, to Charles Wallace Lindsey and Ruby May Spraggins Lindsey. She was a retired teacher and had retired from Carlsbad Center in 1988. She married P.E. "Bob" Luce on May 29, 1943, in East St. Louis, Ill. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, in Fort Stockton Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside service will follow in East Hill Cemetery. The services will be officiated by A.D. Jackson. Nila was active in the Order of the Eastern Star, having received her 25-year pin from the Order of the Eastern Star on Jan. 21, 1989, marking 33 years in the Eastern Star. She was a deeply religious person and over the past 41/[2] years rarely missed the service at the Business Men's Bible Class on Sunday morning in San Angelo, the singing on Sunday afternoon, and Bible study on Tuesday mornings, always arriving early to secure her favorite seat. Nila met the love of her life, Bob Luce, at Gibbs Field in Fort Stockton while working there during World War II. They were married nearly 50 years. She raised a family before going back to Sul Ross to get her college degree in 1970 at age 50. She taught school in San Benito and Balmorhea and was a full-time substitute at the Fort Stockton Independent School District before moving to San Angelo in 1978 to work for MHMR at Carlsbad Center. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lila Jane "Cooter" Riggs in 1980; granddaughter, Rebecca Winkler in 1985; and her loving husband, P.E. "Bob" Luce in August 1991. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. She was born Feb. 12, 1915, in Burkburnett, Texas, to Patrick Cleburne and Eva Pearl Chenault. Frances grew up on a ranch in Scurry County with her two brothers and little sister. She graduated from business college and worked in several places before coming to San Angelo in the early 1950s. She became the owner of San Angelo Transfer Co. and worked there until her retirement. After retirement she married her longtime sweetheart, Albert T. Jones and moved to Plainview to become a farmer's wife. When Albert retired they returned to San Angelo where she lived until her death. Frances had many friends and was a joy to all who knew her. She loved to work in her yard and enjoyed stitching. She loved to play bridge and was an active member of the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and was active in Presbyterian Women. Frances was devoted to God and her family and she will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; her sister; and a nephew. She is survived by three nieces, Anne Perry and husband, Peter, of Martinsville, Va., Margaret Murphy of Richardson and Evalie Grigg and husband, Neal, of San Angelo; brother-in-law, Mark A. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Reynolds, pastor of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Dick was born Aug. 21, 1917, in Wells, Cherokee County, and attended Wells High School. His working career began in his late teens when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, a work program started during the Depression by President Roosevelt. He was paid $30 a month, of which he kept $5 and sent the rest to his parents. In 1939 he joined the U.S. Corps of Engineers in the Galveston District. He took a leave of absence to join the Navy in 1944. He was assigned to the Lycoming, a troop carrier that was commissioned on Sept. 20, 1944, and was sent immediately to participate in the invasion of the Philippines. Its most harrowing duty was the invasion of Okinawa in April of 1945 where it dodged the attacks of Kamikaze pilots. Dick piloted a landing craft, ferrying troops to the beach and later they ferried occupation troops into Nagasaki, not long after the dropping of the atomic bomb. He was discharged from the Navy on Dec. 28, 1945, and returned to the U.S. Corps of Engineers, working in the Fort Worth district. Dick was a survey engineer, surveying for airports, dams and various government projects all over Texas. In 1954, he was assigned to the North Concho Dam project, now O.C. Fisher State Park, where he remained until he retired in May 1977. His hobbies were numerous. He was a member of the NRA and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting elk in Colorado and Arizona, antelope in Wyoming and deer, quail, dove, pheasants and even squirrel in Texas. One of his nicknames was One Shot. The deep freeze was always full. He also enjoyed fishing and dont forget golf, a fun sport. Another hobby was dancing. He was a member of La Paloma Dance Club for more than 40 years and served as president for two terms. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge on Aug. 24, 1953, raised to a Master Mason on Nov. 30, 1953, and joined Suez Temple in 1961. He was a member of the Motor Corps and later the parade unit. In 1975, he was president of the Concho Shrine Club. He also belonged to Concho Lodge 1260, Commandery 28 Knights Templar, Chapter 170 and Council 110. Dick was a member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. He married Bert Sims Carter on April 30, 1971. Dick and Bert truly enjoyed traveling, towing the Airstream. Dick was the pilot and Bert the navigator, seeing the great U.S. from Maine to Florida and Canada to Mexico. In 1979, they built a summer cabin in the White Mountains of Arizona where they enjoyed golf, trout fishing and a wonderful group of friends for 15 years. Dick said he didnt know how to build a house but Bert said sure you do, Ill help. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Jewell Odom; his parents, Gus and Liddie Julia Brewer; brothers, Jack and Henry Brewer; sisters, Lillie Mae DuBose, Myrtie Anderson, Emma Lott and Mary Brown. Lorene and her parents roamed in a covered wagon migrating from work to work. Her mother died when Lorene was 7 years old. She married Joe T. Jones at 19 and had four children. Lorene lived on Broadway in Ballinger, where she sold Avon products. She loved the people and the community, especially those of the Seventh Street Baptist Church. She loved the Lord God who saved her soul. A very special person in her life was Jewell Sherry. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Zeb Shaddix, Pat Shaddix, Billy Shaddix and Bobby Joe Shaddix Sr.; sisters, Lola Shaddix, Ima Jean Shaddix and Judy Shaddix. LOISE LEWIS FIELDS SONORA Myrtle Loise Lewis Fields, 81, of Sonora passed away Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, in St. Davids Hospital in Austin following heart surgery. On Aug. 14, 1939, Loise was married to Herbert Wardlaw Fields, son of Sutton County rancher W.J. Fields. Loise and Herbert were engaged in ranching in Sutton County, and Loise taught school at Sonora Elementary for several years. She was a member of the Church of the Good ShepherdPresbyterian. She was very active in her community with various church and civic organizations, including the United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, Womens Club, and as a charter member of the Fling Ding Club. Her many charities included the Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America and West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Loise was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert; and four brothers. She is survived by a brother, Tryon E. Lewis of Fort Stockton; three sons, Dr. John W. Fields of Sonora, Herbert W. Fields Jr. of Houston and Tryon L. Fields of Sonora; and five grandchildren, Amy Youngblood of Del Rio, Becca Fields of Lubbock, Tanner Fields of Brownwood and Sean and Kayla Fields of Sonora. His working career in aviation began at the early age of 17 as an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration. He entered into duty with the FAA in April 1942. He served as an air traffic controller in the Navy and for a time in Corpus Christi. He was appointed tower chief at Mathis Field in June 1956. He was asked to become airport manager of Mathis Field in 1984 and retired after 11 years of service in October 1995. John was an active aviator as well, earning his wings at an early age and he remained a skilled and proficient pilot through to this retirement. John served as president of United Way of Tom Green County. He was appointed to the Texas Department of Transportation Aviation Advisory Board. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Lions League for Crippled Children. He was a lifetime member of the Rotary Club. He was active in St. Luke Methodist Church, an elder in the First Presbyterian Church and an active member of First United Methodist Church. John also enjoyed a love for the outdoors with his family, playing golf and hunting. John is survived by his wife, Gayle L. Schwab; a daughter, Diane Schwab of Garland; a son, Dick Schwab of Austin; stepsons, David Lewis of Dallas and Michael Lewis of Southlake; three sisters Charlotte Hunter of Denver, Ruth Megarity of Ruidoso, N.M., and Margaret Joe Flemming of Hochheim; and his former wife, Dorine Schwab. John loved his grandchildren, Jason and Stacy Schwab of Austin, and his stepgrandchildren. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews. She then worked in civil service at Webb Air Force Base for 23 years, retiring when the base closed. Marjorie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coahoma. She loved her church and was very active until her health prevented her from attending. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed gardening. Survivors include her husband, R.J. Lorene and her parents roamed in a covered wagon migrating from work to work. Her mother died when Lorene was 7 years old. She married Joe T. Jones at 19 and had four children. Lorene lived on Broadway in Ballinger, where she sold Avon products. She loved the people and the community, especially those of the Seventh Street Baptist Church where she was a member. She loved the Lord God who saved her soul. A very special person in her life was Jewell Sherry. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Zeb Shaddix, Pat Shaddix, Billy Shaddix and Bobby Joe Shaddix Sr.; sisters, Lola Shaddix, Ima Jean Shaddix and Judy Shaddix. JOHN WILLIAM SCHWAB John William Schwab, 76, of San Angelo died Friday evening, Sept. 22, 2000, in a local hospital. His working career in aviation began at an early age of 17 as an air traffic controller with the Federal Aviation Administration. He entered on duty with the FAA in April 1942. He served as an air traffic controller in the Navy and for a time in Corpus Christi. He was appointed tower chief at Mathis Field in June 1956. He was asked to become airport manager of Mathis Field in 1984 and retired after 11 years of service in October 1995. John was an active aviator as well, earning his wings at an early age and he remained a skilled and proficient pilot through to this retirement. John served as president of United Way of Tom Green County. He was appointed to the Texas Department of Transportation Aviation Advisory Board. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Lions League for Crippled Children. He was a lifetime member of the Rotary Club. He was active in St. Luke Methodist Church, an elder in the First Presbyterian Church and an active member of First United Methodist Church. John also enjoyed a love for the outdoors with his family, playing golf and hunting. John is survived by his wife, Gayle L. Schwab; a daughter, Diane Schwab of Garland; a son, Dick Schwab of Austin; stepsons, David Lewis of Dallas and Michael Lewis of Southlake; three sisters Charlotte Hunter of Denver, Ruth Megarity of Ruidoso, N.M., and Margaret Joe Flemming of Hochheim; and his former wife, Dorine Schwab. John loved his grandchildren, Jason and Stacy Schwab of Austin, and his stepgrandchildren. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews. Loise and Herbert were engaged in ranching in Sutton County, and Loise taught school at Sonora Elementary for several years. She was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd-Presbyterian. She was very active in her community with various church and civic organizations, including the United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, Womens Club, and as a charter member of the Fling Ding Club. Her many charities included the Lions Club, Boy Scouts of America and West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Loise was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herbert; and four brothers. Mike is survived by his mother, Mary Elizabeth McKinney, his sister, Caroline Louise Pena and husband, Bob; his sister, Martha Jane "Janie" De Palma; and a brother-in-law, Joe DePalma, all of San Angelo; a daughter, Liana McKinney of Honolulu, Hawaii; four grandchildren, Jasmine, Raven, Briana and Christine McKinney; and many who considered Mike an "uncle" and "friend." Mike's extended family spanned from coast to coast and from England to Japan. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. EARLDEAN ROBERTS MIDLAND - Earldean "Deanie" Roberts was born Sept. 21, 1933, in Voss to Earl F. and Ruby Dee Garner. She attended schools in Wingate and Winters, Portsmouth, Va., Long Beach, Calif., and graduated from Sundown High School in Sundown. On Dec. 23, 1949, she married W.V. "Red" Roberts in Sundown. Mrs. Roberts died Sept. 25, 2000, at her residence. Deanie was a gifted artist. Her art included painted works in both watercolors and oil. She also spent many years creating works in ceramic. Deanie's talents also enabled her to create an extensive collection of miniatures. Some of her creations in miniature have been displayed in the Museum of the Southwest and the Museum of Miniatures in Dallas. She was an outstanding member of the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts and a former member of the Midland Miniature Maker's Club. Deanie was a tireless volunteer with the Manor Park Auxiliary and the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum Santa Rita Club volunteers. She also worked with the Cub Scouts of the Buffalo Trail Council, the Jane Long Parent Teachers Association and was a founding member of the "M" Square Dance Club. Services are pending at Memorial Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries WILLIAM ALBERT SHIRLEY William Albert "Bill" Shirley passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord Wednesday morning, Sept. 27, 2000. Bill was born Aug. 8, 1913, to Joel Kelly and Eula Bills Shirley. Bill graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1936 and he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. From 1942-1945, during World War II, Bill worked at the Sangamon Ordinance Plant in Illiopolis, Ill. While in Illinois he met his future wife, Marjorie. They came to San Angelo in 1946 so Bill could work for Model Laundry. Later in 1946 he purchased a floral shop and Shirley Floral Co. was born. He worked in the laundry and floral business for 11 years years before he dedicated his entire business efforts to the flower business in 1957. The flower business truly reflected his love of people and his gift of sharing with all whom he met. In 1982, he retired from the daily operation of the flower shop. During the past few years he has shared his love and respect for all as a volunteer at Shannon Women's and Children's Hospital. Bill also was a dedicated member of the Downtown Lions Club and had been called the oldest living Past District Governor of Lions internationally. He served as district governor in 1940-1941 while still living in Paris, Texas, after college. Bill's love and concern to serve his customers the best that he could was a reason for his involvement in the State and National Floral Associations. He served as president of the Texas State Florist Association and the WesTexas New Mexico Florist Association. Bill was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Shirley. MAY DOYAL WYATT Believing from age 12 that Christ died for her sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried and rose again, May Doyal Wyatt went to be with the Lord on Sept. 27, 2000, at the age of 88. She was born Feb. 23, 1912, to Christopher and Eunice Doyal in Mason. The early years of her life were spent on ranches, with a governess for a teacher. She first attended public school in the fifth grade in Big Lake. The family moved to Barnhart in June of 1924, where she graduated from high school in 1929. She never forgot the closing words of her valedictory speech: "For now our boat glides out between the shores, bearing the class of 1929 to be a class no more, but looking forward with a smile to that glad after-while where we shall no more say, 'Goodbye'." She married Edwin Jasper Wyatt Aug. 7, 1929. During those depression years they did whatever honest work they could to make a living. Most of their years were spent in West Texas except for three years in New Mexico, where twins Leon and Lenona, were born. They lived four years in Fort Stockton and seven years in Christoval before moving to San Angelo in 1955. She worked at Goodfellow cafeteria for 18 years and received the courtesy award in Exchange Services twice in one year. She and her husband also received an award for saving the building from an early morning electrical fire. Each Sunday morning young airmen were transported to church and often invited to dinner. The Wyatt's joined Harris Avenue Baptist Church in 1954, where she worked in the pre-school department, taught 16 years in the day care program and was active in the Women's Missionary Union and home-bound visitation program. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981. She is survived by her son, Leon, and his wife, Annie, of Garland; her daughter, Lenona Carlburg and husband, Cliff, of San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren, Julia Dunn and husband, Steve, of Borrego Springs, Calif., Richard Carlburg and wife, Yvette, of Phoenix, Raymond Carlburg of San Diego, Jim Wyatt and wife, Christy, of Garland and Christie LeAnn Barta and husband, Anthony, of Dallas; and five great-grandchildren, Daniel, Josiah and Rebecca Carlburg, Jessica Dunn and Rachel Wyatt. Melba started her business career early in life as a DE student with Nathan's Jewelers in her junior year of high school. Upon graduation she was employed full-time. She took time off in 1958 to give birth to her daughter, Sherri, and returned to work full-time in 1959. She retired in 1998 from Nathan's Jewelers as a vice president and credit manager. She and her daughter, Sherri, were avid fans of the Angelo State University women's athletic volleyball and basketball games.
