Survivors include two brothers, Joseph Webb McKnight of Dallas and John Lyndon McKnight of Houston. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries DOROTHY WELLS WILSON SCOTT Dorothy Wells Wilson Scott, of Tyler and formerly of San Angelo, died Oct. 12, 2000, in a Tyler hospital. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Sunday at Johnsons Funeral Home. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Rohlfs officiating. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Dorothy was born in a small mining village in Northport, Wash., on Feb. 19, 1908. As a child she also lived in Colville, Wash., and Chicago, Ill., where she attended Hyde Park High School and the American Conservatory of Music on piano scholarships. She took music courses at Angelo State University where she was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota music honorary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Archibald Scott; her son, Roger Frederick Scott; and a granddaughter, Christina Elizabeth Scott. Although her formal music education was cut short by the depression, Dorothy maintained a lifelong passion for homemaking, music, art and volunteer work in Dalhart, Long Beach, Calif., Lubbock, Dallas and San Angelo. Dorothy was a founder and second president of the San Angelo Symphony Guild. She was made a Life and Circle of Honor member. She served several terms on the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, a charter member of the San Angelo Symphony Chorale and a member of the Philharmonic Society. Her interest in art was realized through The Stitchers. Her volunteerism began in Lubbock where she joined the Junior League. In Dallas, she worked at the Wadley Blood Center. In San Angelo, she was one of the 10 founders of the Shannon Hospital Auxiliary. She was a member of the Planned Parenthood Board and an active participant with Meals on Wheels. Dorothy was dedicated to her faith, attending the Methodist Church in each of the towns in which she lived. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir for more than 40 years. She blessed the church with several creative stitchery appliqued banners and processional bells. She is survived by her son, Samuel Wilson Scott and wife, Anne, of Dallas; a daughter, Susan Tandy Scott Brandt and husband, Bill, of Tyler; five grandchildren, Willem and Deanna Scott of Bath, Penn., Frances Tandy Scott of Rapid City, S.D., Samuel Andrew Scott of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Kerry and Travis Dunbar of Columbia, Md., and Scott Matthew Brandt of Dallas. Grayson, 80, of San Angelo joined her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2000. She is now rejoicing for eternity with family members and her husband who had preceded her in death. Lakan Mariano of College Hills Baptist Church and the Rev. Robert L. Franklin of Monroe, Ga. Bessie was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Clarksville, Texas, to Lula B. and R. Lee Franklin. She was raised in the Clarksville area where she would later meet and marry her husband of 51 years, J.T. Grayson, on his return from World War II. Bessie was proud to have supported the war effort by working at the Red River Arsenal near Clarksville. In 1955 she and her husband moved to Kingsville, Texas. There she was employed by University Grocery and later by the Naval Exchange. She retired in 1988. In 1996 Bessie and J.T. moved to San Angelo to be near her family. Bessie was a resident of Baptist Memorials Retirement Community where she had many friends. Throughout her life Bessie was active in church work. Until her later years, she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and worked in the church nursery. She was an active member of College Hills Baptist Church. Bessies life was an inspiration to her family, her church and her many, many friends and will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.T. Grayson; and two brothers, Earl and Richard Franklin. Survivors include one son, Jesse Bailey J.B. Ross proudly served his country in the Army as a sergeant and was discharged in 1945. He retired in 1998 working as maintenance for Clampitt Retirement Center for 10 years. Mr. Bull moved to Wichita Fallas from Anson in 1953. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lula Blanche Bull on July 12, 1992, and a son, John Thomas Bull in 1953. He was born the first of two children to Dan and Sue Junell in Sulphur Springs on Oct. 29, 1914. He attended public school in Brady and later moved with his family to Abilene where he graduated from Abilene High School in 1931. He attended Hardin-Simmons University, graduating in 1934 with a bachelor of arts degree. He also received a masters degree in journalism from the University of Missouri. In 1936, he moved to El Paso where he was assistant to the president of the Texas College of Mines & Metallurgy (the University of Texas at El Paso), taught the colleges first journalism classes, and broadcast Miners football games. On Sept. 29, 1935, he and Maxine Simmons of Haskell were married. They made their home in El Paso, until he enlisted for military service. He completed officers training school and during World War II he served in the U.S. Navy from March 1942 to November 1945. He was assigned to combat duty aboard the destroyer escort USS Inch in the North Atlantic. During the Korean War, he served in the Navy from February 1951 to August 1952. He held the rank of captain (retired) in the U.S. Naval Reserve. From 1946-48, he was sales manager for Roderick Broadcasting Co. in El Paso. Moving with his family to Lubbock, he served as assistant to the president of Texas Technological College (Texas Tech University) from 1948-51. He was financial vice president for Hardin-Simmons from 1952-54. He returned to Lubbock in 1955 as vice president of Citizens National Bank, where he was executive vice president from 1959-66. In June 1966, he assumed the presidency of Central National Bank in San Angelo. He was named board chairman and chief executive officer in 1973. In January 1981, he stepped down as chief executive officer but remained CNB board chairman until his retirement. He also served as board chairman of Central National Bancshares Inc., Bevans State Bank of Menard and First State Bank of Rankin. During his tenure at CNB, he was appointed a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. In addition to his family and his career, Frank contributed significantly to education, community and church activities. He served as chairman of the board of regents of Texas Tech University and as chairman of the board of trustees of Hardin-Simmons University, which conferred an honorary doctor of laws degree in 1986. Both Angelo State University and Texas Tech School of Law have honored him with endowed scholarships in his or his familys name. Recognizing his contributions to the university, ASU is currently building the Junell Multipurpose Center on its campus. He was a trustee of Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital, chairman and president of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce. In 1968, he was named chairman of the Tom Green County United Way Fund general campaign drive and was voted Citizen of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce-Board of City Development in 1969. In 1987, the Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Division named him outstanding economic developer of the year, citing him for his significant leadership, his attitude, and his ability to get the job done. He also was greatly involved in activities of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and West Texas Boys Ranch. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the board of deacons financial committee and was selected as a delegate to the Texas Baptist Convention. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Maxine; his sister, Elizabeth Junell Baugh of Abilene; and his three children and their families; Janice Junell McDonald and her husband, James, of Fredericksburg, and their two children, Bryan and Karin; Robert Junell and his wife, Beverly, of San Angelo, and their three children, Ryan, Keith Elizabeth and Clay; and Dan Junell and his wife, Debra, of Austin, and their two children, Olivia and Riley. He also is survived by two great-grandchildren, Ashley McDonald and Jessica Reyna. Frank was a caring and honest man, who served as a model of conduct and service to his family, community and church. He always made time to be a friend and adviser to anyone who sought him out, and those were many. He lettered in football as quarterback for two years. In basketball he lettered two years and was all-district and second team all-state. He attended Howard Payne University on a basketball scholarship where he met Dolly Earlina Crawford. They were married at Brownwood Baptist Church on Nov. 26, 1958. While at Howard Payne he lettered three years in basketball and was Whos Who Among American Students in American Universities & Colleges. Don graduated in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree. Don and Dolly then moved to San Angelo where both began teaching at Lake View High School in 1960 and Don was hired as the varsity basketball coach. He continued in the coaching profession for 34 years teaching at Central High School, Lee Junior High, Glenn Junior High, and various other West Texas schools. He also served on the selection committee for the Northern All-Star Football Team in 1999. As a coach, Don was invited to write an article on coaching basketball which was published in Texas Coach magazine. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he taught a Bible class. Throughout his coaching career he was involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and touched the lives of many young people both on and off the field. One of the many highlights of his coaching career was coaching both his sons, Mickey and Danny, and being actively involved in his daughter, Terryes school activities. His favorite pastimes were attending the many athletic events his grandchildren participated in, spending time with his family and friends, and being best buddies with Wyatt. Don was preceded in death by his father, W.B. Abbott; and his sister, Billie Meryl. She was born to Dave and Mae Fisher on May 3, 1918, in Northeastern Oklahoma. She had eight siblings, all of whom are deceased. She married John Walden on Feb. 12, 1946. John passed away March 22, 1998, after 52 years of marriage. Marie was the loving mother of two children, Tom T. Michaels II and Patricia Stewart, who both preceded her in death. Marie was credit manager for J.C. Penney for 18 years and after retirement she helped her husband in his plumbing business. CLAIR McCRACKEN KELLY REFUGIO - Clair McCracken Kelly went to sleep and woke in God's presence on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, at the age of 92. Mrs. Kelly was born on July 21, 1908, to the late Mr. and Mrs. R.S. McCracken of Marfa, Texas. She was the granddaughter of Sally and Joe Humphreys, a pioneer family to West Texas. She was a lifelong resident of Marfa and an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of a founding family of Paisano Baptist Encampment. Mrs. Kelly attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga., before traveling around the world on a ``Floating University'' tour. When she returned to Texas, she married Jack Kelly Jr. Sept. 3, 1933, whom she met on the tour. Mrs. Kelly was a life member of Western District, Texas Federation of Women's Clubs and past president and lifetime member of the Marfa History Club. During World War II, she did her civic duty by managing the USO at the Marfa Air Base and rolling bandages for the Red Cross. He lettered in football as quarterback for two years. In basketball he lettered two years and was all-district and second team all-state. He attended Howard Payne University on a basketball scholarship where he met Dolly Earlina Crawford. They were married at Brownwood Baptist Church on Nov. 26, 1958. While at Howard Payne he lettered three years in basketball and was Who's Who Among American Students in American Universities & Colleges. Don graduated in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree. Don and Dolly then moved to San Angelo where both began teaching at Lake View High School in 1960 and Don was hired as the varsity basketball coach. He continued in the coaching profession for 34 years teaching at Central High School, Lee Junior High, Glenn Junior High, and various other West Texas schools. He also served on the selection committee for the Northern All-Star Football Team in 1999. As a coach, Don was invited to write an article on coaching basketball which was published in Texas Coach magazine. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he taught a Bible class. Throughout his coaching career he was involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes and touched the lives of many young people both on and off the field. One of the many highlights of his coaching career was coaching both his sons, Mickey and Danny, and being actively involved in his daughter, Terrye's school activities. His favorite pastimes were attending the many athletic events his grandchildren participated in, spending time with his family and friends, and being best buddies with Wyatt. Don was preceded in death by his father, W.B. Abbott; and his sister, Billie Meryl. He was a past president of the Oxon Hill, Maryland Lions Club and a charter member of the Dagsboro-Frankford Lions Club. He was an active member of the Lions Club for 40 years. MATTIE SUE WALKER ODESSA - Sue Montgomery Walker passed away peacefully on Oct. 17, 2000. She was born Oct. 18, 1909, in San Angelo. She was the second of four daughters born to Joe and Pearl Montgomery, a pioneer Pecos County ranching family. She spent her early years on the ranch. The family eventually moved to Fort Stockton in order for Sue and her sisters to attend the public schools. She graduated from Fort Stockton High School and attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth before returning to Fort Stockton. On April 12, 1932, she married Homer Walker of San Antonio in Fort Stockton. Homer worked in the Pecos County State Bank for several years before devoting full time to the ranching business, which is still in operation. Homer predeceased her on Nov. 9, 1977. Sue was involved in all aspects of life in Fort Stockton where she resided for nearly 90 years. She was active in the First Christian Church where she was a member for 70 years. She was a member of Magno Usui Study Club, Pioneer Club, Tuesday Club and many other organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Pearl Montgomery; her husband, Homer Walker; and her sisters, Louise Montgomery Fulk, Jo Ann Montgomery Moore and Peggy Montgomery Brooks. ALMA HIRT Alma Hirt, a longtime resident of Wall, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, in the Sterling County Nursing Home at the age of 95. Alma married Frank Hirt on Dec. 30, 1924, in Olfen. They lived and farmed there until early 1934, when they moved to their farm at Wall, where they lived and raised their family until Franks death in 1996. Alma remained living there until 1998, when she moved to Rio Concho Manor in San Angelo. From there, in January 2000, she became a resident of the Sterling County Nursing Home. Alma was a charter member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church at Wall, where she was instrumental in helping get a choir started. She was also a charter member of the St. Helens Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She enjoyed being a member of the Home Demonstration Club because of her hobbies quilting, sewing, baking and gardening, both vegetables and flowers. As a homemaker and mother, she supported and helped with all of the activities and responsibilities of her husband, Frank, and their eight children. Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; one daughter Jeanette Kohutek; a son Daniel Hirt; a grandson, Guy Hirt; a sister, Leona Franke; and two brothers, Arthur and Walter Niehues. Deasie was born on June 21, 1918, on the Copeland family homestead in the old house that she so dearly loved outside of Sterling City, Texas. Her parents were John and Blanche Copeland. She moved to San Angelo during World War II where she met Ernest Solat and began a love affair that lasted more than 56 years. She worked at Shannon Memorial Hospital as a registered nurse for more than 30 years. She and Ernie moved to Dallas in 1997 to be with their daughter and her family. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Charlene Turney and Gladys (Bunt) Newcomb; and sister-in-law, Virginia Gay Copeland. She is survived by her husband Ernie; daughter, Mary Pinac and her husband Robert; grandson, Todd Sedwick and his wife, Shannon; granddaughter, Liz Kluever and her husband Chad, all of Dallas; brothers, John Copeland Jr. and C.J Copeland of Sterling City; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Words cannot express what a caring and loving mother and grandma she was. She was always there for all of her family. No matter how much she had to do, she could always do more for someone else. She will be missed so much. Her wonderful sense of humor and incredible ability to laugh at herself will live forever in the hearts and memories of all of those who knew her. Arrangements are by Ross Funeral Home. PETE WILLIAM JACOBY OZONA Pete William Jacoby, 86, died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, in a San Angelo hospital. Service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, in the Ozona United Methodist Church with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Preddy Funeral Home. Mr. Jacoby was born May 12, 1914, in Menard County. He was a graduate of Texas A&M University, a Rotarian, a member of the Chamber of Commerce and on the official board of the Methodist Church. Mr. Jacoby was the Crockett County extension agent for many years and after retirement he entered the Real Estate business. Survivors include his wife, Jimmie Gwynne Jacoby of Ozona; two sons, Pete William Jacoby Jr. and wife, Pattie, of Pullman, Wash., and David Jacoby, M.D. of Austin; his mother-in-law, Hazel P. McDaniel of Ozona; three brothers, T.J. Jacoby of San Angelo, Harold Jacoby and wife, Doris, of Junction and Earl Jacoby of Menard; four grandchildren, J.D. Jacoby of Grand Junction, Colo., Jim Jacoby of Arlington, Brandon Jacoby and Haley Jacoby, both of Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Sandy Stokes, Pon Seahorn, Larry Williams, Billy Reagor, Pam Acton, Pleas Childress, R.J. Everett and Bobby Maness.
