Her father was a pioneer Methodist minister who came to Texas in 1911 with his wife and three children. The family moved to Sterling City, Texas, in the fall of 1914 and in 1921 was transferred to Hallettsville, Texas, where Katherine graduated from high school in 1923, attended one year of college in Westmoreland in San Antonio, taught school in Lavaca County for three years and by going to college summers and one long term attended Texas University in Austin. She came to San Angelo in the fall of 1928 and taught at San Jacinto Elementary School for two years. In July 1930 she married Dr. Otis L. Parris, optometrist. They were divorced in March 1936. SARAH ELIZABETH MATTHEWS Sarah Elizabeth Matthews, 48, of San Angelo was taken home to heaven Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2000, at 12:07 p.m. from Shannon Hospital. She was killed in an automobile accident on her way to work. Family visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, at Johnson's Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Tommy Dalton, David Dalton and Thomas Matthews, all of Moorehead, Miss., Al Davis of Rosenberg, John Milton of Richmond and Mickey Horany of Sugar Land. Sarah, born on the Fourth of July, 1952, in Big Spring was a miracle child from the beginning. Premature, she weighed slightly over two pounds and could fit inside a Kleenex box. Her mother, Mary Elizabeth, and father, Air Force pilot Tom Hughes Dalton, took her home from the hospital after three days. And she was tough. She grew up with two brothers, Tommy and David Dalton, now of Houston. Sarah's adult years began with her first of five sons, Jacob Dalton Estes (now of Reno, Nev.) in 1972. Then came Joshua Allen (now of Austin) and Jesse Thomas Estes (San Angelo) in 1978 and 1984. Most of these kids came amidst a constant effort to gain her pharmacy degree, begun in Norman, Okla., and finalized at the University of Houston in Houston in 1982. Jonathon Hugh and Jeremiah Griffin Matthews, Sarah's fourth and fifth sons, were born in 1988 and 1989 to her and her husband, Freddie L. Matthews, in Richmond. All of her sons but Jacob were born in Hermann Hospital in Houston. She cherished her time with her children and their friends. She was widely known as a wonderful mother. Sarah was particularly pleased to be able to teach the Methodist Youth Disciple Bible Study for a group of youths at First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg. She also cherished her many friends in Richmond-Rosenberg and her many new friends in San Angelo. Sarah's 14-year career in pharmacy began in 1986 at the Richmond State School, where she became assistant director. In 1996 she and her husband and three minor sons moved to San Angelo where she was named pharmacy director at the San Angelo State School. They were making a happy life there. Everyone who knew her loved Sarah. She is already so very sorely missed. With apologies to Poet James Henry Leigh Hunt, the following poem is slightly amended by her husband. "Jenny (Sarah) Kissed Me" "Sarah kissed me when we met Jumping from the chair she sat in. Time, you thief, who loves to get sweets on its list, Put that in. Say I'm weary, say I'm sad Say that health and wealth have missed me. Say I'm growing old, but add Sarah kissed me." Her father and mother preceded her in death. Pallbearers will be Tommy Dalton, David Dalton and Thomas Matthews, all of Moorhead, Miss., Al Davis of Rosenberg, John Milton of Richmond and Mickey Horany of Sugar Land. Sarahs adult years began with her first of five sons, Jacob Dalton Estes (now of Reno, Nev.) in 1972. Jonathon Hugh and Jeremiah Griffin Matthews, Sarahs fourth and fifth sons, were born in 1988 and 1989 to her and her husband, Freddie L. Sarahs 14-year career in pharmacy began in 1986 at the Richmond State School, where she became assistant director. Jenny (Sarah) Kissed Me Sarah kissed me when we met Jumping from the chair she sat in. Time, you thief, who loves to get sweets on its list, Put that in. Say Im weary, say Im sad Say that health and wealth have missed me. Say Im growing old, but add Sarah kissed me. Her father and mother preceded her in death. During Deans high school career he led the nations host of football players in scoring as a junior. As a result, during the 1937 season he was invited to appear with Robert Ripley on his Believe It Or Not radio program. He was a 17-year-old quarterback, weighed 150 pounds and scored 269 points, threw passes for many more, won the Coca-Cola Award and was placed on the Southwestern Sports Magazines All-State Class B football team. The 269 points shattered all U.S. records among prep, college and professional football players in 1937. In 1938 he played for the East in the Oil Bowl game which matched the East Texas and West Texas All Stars in which the East won. Dean finished his high school career by being named on the 1938-39 All-American High School Football Team. He was inducted to the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame at a banquet at the Lee Lockwood Museum in Waco, Texas, April 20, 1990. The TCU-Baylor frost game was one of his greatest as he scored 24 points in a 28-7 victory. He was known as The Little Giant and was said to have the speed of a rabbit and the elusiveness of a ghost. Deans highlight game as a varsity athlete was in the 1941 victory over Texas University. Texas, undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation, saw a magnificent exhibition of pace changing, sidestepping and stiff-arming by Dean on his 55-yard gallop for a touchdown that set the stage for TCUs 14-7 victory and an invitation to play Georgia in the Orange Bowl which was the only Frog Squad ever to do so. Dean was inducted into the TCU Lettermans Hall of Fame on Sept. 21, 1984. Dean graduated early at TCU to join the Marines as an officer candidate and served as a second lieutenant in World War II. During that time he married his college sweetheart, Billie Marie Latham. After the war in 1946 he came back to San Saba to join his father and brother in the pecan business along with their farming and ranching interest. He continued in the family business of buying and selling pecans while diversifying into watermelons, a successful Chevrolet dealership and a cablevision company. Si Loeffler, 97, died Nov. 2, 2000, in Brenham, where he had resided since late August 2000 when he had to be moved because of the untimely closure of the single nursing home in Sonora, Texas, his much-loved community in Sutton County and place of residence since 1942. Loeffler was born Jan. 30, 1903, in Mason County, Texas, the second child of Albert Christian and Emma Louise Schmidt Loeffler. Because the family ranched and farmed, Loeffler learned that business from early childhood. He maintained the family properties during a period when his father was seriously ill, attending school sporadically. At age 14, he went to work as a full-time cowboy for J.W. White in Mason, returning his wages to his parents for their support. Loeffler preferred to be called Si, and certainly not Silas Marvin, which was his christened name. While he always regarded his principal profession to be ranching, it was during the Great Depression that Si, to support his new, young family, worked as a banker and later an employee of the Texas Highway Department. On Aug. 6, 1925, Si married Esther Emma Witt in Mason. To the union of Si and Esther were born three sons. Exactly one month prior to Esthers death on Sept. 6, 1989, the couple recognized their 64th wedding anniversary. When World War II began, Si was ready to volunteer to serve his country. But, to his disappointment, he was a few months too old to enlist. So, being promoted to a maintenance foreman status within the Texas Highway Department, he moved his family to Sonora on April 1, 1942, where the family became an integral part of the community. They were active members of the First United Methodist Church, where Esther was pianist and organist and Si sang in the choir. Service to their church was foremost in their lives and those of their sons. The couple also became leaders of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sonora Chapter 575 and worthy matron and patron of the regional order. On many occasions, Si was master of the Masonic Dee-Ora Lodge 715. As one who was predominately self-educated (able to speak three languages fluently), Si was proud that all three of his sons are college graduates. The Loeffler home was always open to company and became a gathering place for especially the young, single teachers in town for abundant, tasty meals and vigorous songfests around the ever-present piano. Si returned to ranching full time in 1953, having completed 20 years of service with the highway department. He, of course, had never entirely left ranching, having been an adviser and helper to many rancher friends. Si was multi-generational in his friendships, from the very young to the elderly. One of his main strengths, inherited from his mother before him, was that he accepted each person for the individual he or she was, not expecting or requiring them to be like all the others. (this included his children and grandchildren). And he was always ready to share a true story in vivid detail from a mind that was sharp right up to the first stroke in April 2000. Si is one of the much-quoted interview subjects in Patrick Dearens book, The Last of the Old-Time Cowboys. He also appeared on interview shows done by Sonora and San Angelo radio stations and was the subject of a charcoal old-time cowboy portrait of him done by artist Nora Weaver of Kerrville. Si is survived by the following: son and daughter-in-law, A. Lin and Alice Loeffler of San Antonio; son, Norris Dean Loeffler of Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Carlos and Nancy Kirk Loeffler of Kenney; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three greatgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Alice Loeffler Kothmann of Fredericksburg. He was preceded in death by his wife; one infant daughter, Cynthia Louise Loeffler; his parents; two brothers; and three sisters. A memorial service celebrating Si Loefflers long and valuable life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6, at the First United Methodist Church of Sonora. The Rev. Paul Terry of San Angelo will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot in Gooch Cemetery in Mason at 3 p.m. Monday. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law as follows, Bob Loeffler of San Antonio, David Loeffler of Kingsland, Mark Loeffler of North Haven, Conn., Lyn Loeffler of Austin, Mark Stuckey of Austin, Keith Loeffler of Katy, Dwight Sweeney of Foothill Ranch, Calif.; and friend, Carl Weaver of Sonora. Arrangements are by Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main St., Brenham, (979) 836-4564.
