Upon graduating, he married Dona Ingham on Sept. 2, 1954. Hanie was a member of the National Guard, a director in the San Angelo Stock Show for over 20 years, a member of the Girls Home board of directors, the Sheep & Goat Raisers Association, West Texas Boys Ranch, Chuck Wagon Gang in Odessa, Elks Lodge of San Angelo and Odessa, and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association. He was a beer distributor in San Angelo, Midland, Odessa and Lubbock. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother. Survivors include his wife, Sara Lee Stephenson Vardy of Kirtland; a sister, Willie Grace Rankin of Midland; a brother, Bob Vardy of Fairfield, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries ELIZABETH ROUTH POOL Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at the First Baptist Church for Elizabeth Routh Pool, wife of the late Dr. J. Christopher Pool. He preceded her in death Jan. 21, 1978 in San Angelo. Mrs. Pool died Monday, Nov. 13, 2000, at the age of 91 in a local nursing center. Interment will be in Lockhart. Mrs. Pool was born in San Antonio July 17, 1909, to Eugene Coke Routh and Mary (Wroe) Routh. She graduated from San Marcos Baptist Academy is 1926, where she later taught from 1930 to 1932. She received her AB degree from Baylor College for Women at Belton in 1930. She also did graduate work at George Peabody College. In 1934, Mrs. Pool was appointed by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board as a missionary to Nigeria, and in 1935 she was married in Ogbomosho, Nigeria, to Dr. J.C. Pool, principal of the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary in Ogbomosho. The Pools served for 37 years as missionaries in Nigeria and one year just before retirement in Liberia. Mrs. Pool served as secretary-bookkeeper in the Baptist Mission Hospital in Ogbomosho, and later as secretary-treasurerbookkeeper and teacher in the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary. The Pools three children, all of whom were born in Ogbomosho, were taught by their mother from the first through seventh or eighth grades. She was the author of three books, The Hill Called Moon, Lucille Reagan of Africa and The Bead-Makers Son. Dr. and Mrs. Pool retired from active foreign mission service in 1972 and moved to San Angelo in 1974, to live at the Baptist Memorials Center Village. In 1974 Mrs. Pool received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from San Marcos Baptist Academy, and in 1990 the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor bestowed upon her the Outstanding Alumna Award from that institution. Mrs. Pool is survived by two children, Carolyn Pool of Fairfax, Va., and James C. Pool of San Angelo; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Wendell Arnett of Louisville, Ky. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Pool, and her eldest daughter, Frances Haaren. Mrs. Pool was a member of First Baptist Church in San Angelo, was for 12 years the teacher of a weekly Bible class at Baptist Memorials Center and for 10 years taught a First Baptist Churchsponsored English class for international wives in San Angelo. She was also a member of the Baptist Memorials Hospital Auxiliary, a charter member of the Glory Choir of San Angelo and a member of the Pocahontas Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention or to the Baptist Memorials Center of San Angelo. MARY V. HEIMBECKER Mary V. Heimbecker, 77, of San Angelo died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, in a local nursing center. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Angelo Bible Church, officiated by the Rev. Jim Stanley and the Rev. Lakan Mariano. Burial will follow in Belvedere Memorial Park. She had a thirst for learning and graduated valedictorian of her class. She attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and while there met the love of her life, Roy. She also began what would become her life ministries. She worked at the Moody Bookstore and established a well-respected weekly book review program on live radio. She loved being a ministers wife, singing and playing the piano in church and her home. She was a popular womens speaker at banquets and retreats and national church conventions in the Chicago area. Children always held a special place in her heart and she loved telling Bible stories in Sunday schools and backyard Bible clubs. She held weekly Bible studies in her home for as long as her health allowed. Mary brought joy and unconditional love to those she met. She touched our lives for the better. Most of all she loved God, and Roy and her children. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Roy F. Heimbecker of San Angelo; their children, David R. She loved being a ministers wife, singing and playing the piano in church and in her home. She was a popular womens speaker at banquets and retreats and national church conventions in the Chicago area. Children always held a special place in her heart and she loved telling Bible stories in Sunday schools and backyard Bible clubs. She held weekly Bible studies in her home for as long as her health allowed. Mary brought joy and unconditional love to those she met. She touched our lives for the better. Bill Clegg was an only child born to Tom and Hannah Blease Clegg on March 26, 1919, in Pawtucket, R.I. His parents were from England. Bill attended the Episcopal Church and graduated from East Providence High School. He then attended Bently College in Boston. In 1941 Bill joined the United States Air Force during World War II. He came to Texas as a navigator bombardier instructor at Concho Field in San Angelo. They flew training flights to the air strip at Ozona. It was in Ozona that Bill met and married Alice Eloise Carson on October 14, 1944. After the war they moved back to Ozona. Bill was a sports fan. He coached Little League and followed all the sports events. Bill served on the board of the West Texas/New Mexico Golf Association, the Ozona Country Club and the Rio Grande Electric Cooperative. He had ranched in Crockett, Sutton and Pecos counties. They also owned a home and spent summers in Alto, N.M. Services are pending at Rains-Seale Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries HUGH LEE GOBER BRADY Hugh Lee Bud Gober Jr., former mayor of Brady, died at the age of 83 at Arlington Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000. He was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Coleman to Mary Brooks Gober and Hugh Lee Gober. He moved to Brady with his family in 1927. He achieved the level of Eagle Scout in 1931. He graduated from Brady High School and attended Tarleton State University. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps Dec. 5, 1941, two days before Pearl Harbor. He graduated from Officers Candidate School as a second lieutenant and was honorably discharged from the Air Corps as a major. He worked for Goodys Headache Powders as assistant sales manager before joining Hanes Corp., where he became district sales manager. He married Claire Schwenker on June 5, 1948. Together they raised two loving and wonderful children, Hugh Lee Gober III and Lynne Claire Gober Wren, of whom he was very proud. After spending 39 years with Hanes, he retired and joined Stedman Corp. in Denver for a year before returning to Brady. He was elected mayor of Brady on Jan. 21, 1986. He was elected four times and served for 11 years (an accomplishment he was very proud of). He loved the state of Texas, and especially Brady. He was known as Tex outside of Brady. He was elected to the Concho Valley Council of Governments and served on several committees. He was appointed to the Concho Regina Review Block Grant Committee by Gov. Clements during the governors two terms and again by Gov. George W. Bush. He was president of Texas Municipal League District 6, which was composed of 28 counties. He was an ambassador for the University of Texas Institute of Texas Cultures. He was honored several times by the commanding general of Fort Hood and Three Corps. One of his most meaningful acknowledgments was the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed upon him from the Brady Chamber of Commerce in 1997. He belonged to the 32 Masons and was a member of Suez Shrine. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Claire Gober; their son, Hugh Lee Gober, daughter-in-law, Jan, and granddaughters, Laura and Rachel, of Arlington; their daughter, Lynne Gober Wren and son-in-law, Ted; grandson, Joel, and granddaughter, Hayley, of Duncanville; his sister, Polly Brookover, and brother-in-law, Bill, of Granbury; and several nieces and nephews. She died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000. Her parents were John and Nancy Danley Smallwood. When she was 19 years old, she was baptized in a creek near her home. She came to Texas for her health in 1923. After almost a year of rest, she taught in Tom Green County schools and in San Angelo until she married R.D. Johnson on Dec. 23, 1930. They lived on ranches in Irion County until 1956 when they bought some land six miles south of Eldorado where they then made their home. Survivors include one son R.D. Bob Johnson Jr. and wife, Sherry; two granddaughters, Ashley Johnson Moore and husband, Brent, and Lindsey Johnson, all of Eldorado. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews in other states and by R.D.s nieces and nephews who she considered her own. After almost a year of rest, she taught in Tom Green County schools and in San Angelo until she married R.D. Johnson on Dec. 23, 1930. They lived on ranches in Irion County until 1956 when they bought some land six miles south of Eldorado where they then made their home. Survivors include one son R.D. Bob Johnson Jr. and wife, Sherry; two granddaughters, Ashley Johnson Moore and husband, Brent, and Lindsey Johnson, all of Eldorado. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews in other states and by R.D.s nieces and nephews whom she considered her own. GREGORY Ralph E. Gregory, 87, of San Angelo went to be with the Lord at 5:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in a local hospital. Ralph was born Aug. 12, 1913, in Grove Hill, Ala. He was a veteran of World War II. He served in the U.S. Air Force in France and Malmstrom Air Force Base and Goodfellow Air Force Base from 1939-1959. He married Eva Louise King on Oct. 10, 1942, in Tucson, Ariz. Ralph was a member of Edmond Boulevard Baptist Church. Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Eva Louise Gregory. She died Nov. 21, 1998, and by his greatgrandson, Hunter Pederson who died March 10, 1999. As a young man he joined the Navy and became an aircraft mechanic, and later he and Bessie started their own business, United Rent All and retired in 1987. In his later years he was active in Code Blue and enjoyed fishing as well as working with the AARP. He also was an active Masonic Lodge and Emergency Corps. member for many years. Chalk was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bessie; and a sister, Delilah Haynes. MINNIE ALICE SLOAN HARRIS SONORA Alice Harris, 85, died Sunday afternoon, Nov. 19, 2000, in a Kerrville nursing home. She had been a resident of Sonora for about two years prior to moving to Kerrville, but had lived in Odessa since November of 1947. Alice was born Nov. 25 Thanksgiving Day 1915, in Wewoka, Okla., to Nancy and Sydney Sloan. She married T.J. Jack Harris Feb. 18, 1935, in Wellington, Texas. They had two sons, the Rev. Ted W. Harris of Sonora and R.J. Ron Harris of Atlanta, Ga. Jack Harris preceded her in death in 1998. Alice is survived by her sons, seven grandchildren, 14 greatgrandchildren; one great-greatgrandson, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He died Nov. 18, 2000, at his home in Morton. He was born Jan. 20, 1917, in Grape Creek to W.H. Westbrook and Molly Wheat Westbrook. John was a deacon at the First Baptist Church of Morton. He and Dorace had lived in Grape Creek, Alamogordo, N.M., San Angelo and Morton. He was a World War II veteran. He retired in 1978 from the Civil Service at White Sands Missile Range after 31 years of service. He received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, which was the second one issued by White Sands Missile Range. He invented many things while working for the Civil Service and was a farmer in his early years. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorace Jane; three sons and their spouses, John K. Westbrook and Leslee of Alpine, Mark Westbrook and Kathy of Capitan, N.M., and Corey Westbrook and Lela of Morton; two grandchildren, Tracy May of Miles and Mack Westbrook of Bryan; two stepgrandsons, Jake and Josh Jones of Capitan, and two greatgranddaughters. He had four brothers and sisters. He has one surviving brother, Charles Westbrook of Visalia, Calif., and three surviving sisters, Cornelia Baker and Nannie Pope, both of San Angelo, and Clara Owen of Visalia. She was an apartment manager and homemaker. MARGARET LEE ISAACS WILLIAMS ELDORADO Margaret Lee Isaacs Williams, 95, of Eldorado died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, in the Schleicher County Nursing Home. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 24, in Eldorado Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kerbow Funeral Home. Maggie Lee was born Oct. 15, 1905, in Lohn. Her father and mother, Will L. and Isabella Finlay Isaacs moved in a covered wagon, moving cattle also, to Schleicher County when Maggie Lee was 10 days old. Mrs. Isaacs drove the wagon with Maggie Lee in her lap. Later, Maggie Lee, her three brothers, little sister and parents moved from the Tom Henderson Ranch to the old Cook Ranch in the Twin Wells school district. Maggie Lee, Robert and Willie and the Hinyard children, Paul and Elizabeth rode horseback across the pasture to the Twin Wells School. Later, Maggie Lee, Robert, Willie and Leonard had governesses for the next three years. Their first governess was Agnes West, the first white child born in Schleicher County after the county was organized. Rachel Page was the second. Maggie Lees parents, with Ruf Hinyards help, moved the old Cook house three and one half miles east, across the pasture (with mules) on wagon wheels to be in the Adams school district. Maggie Lee and her siblings spent the next three years (until she was in the eighth grade) riding horseback to Adams School, better known as Red Bud College. When Maggie Lee was ready for high school, her family moved to Eldorado. She went to Eldorado High School and graduated in 1926. Then she attended Daniel Baker College in Brownwood for two and one half years. Maggie Lee and Otto Williams were married June 1929. They spent their honeymoon in the new Cactus Hotel in San Angelo. Maggie Lee and Otto moved to a three section ranch on the ToeNail Trail in northeast Schleicher County. Later they acquired three more sections from the Jacksons and the Akes. This is where they resided until Otto became ill and they moved back to Eldorado. Maggie Lee was truly a rancher. She rode horseback, went hunting and was a perfect shot, and ran the ranch for many years. Maggie Lee was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and her husband. She is survived by her sister, Isabella Isaacs McCutcheon of Eldorado, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. EDDIE EUGENE KENNEDY BRAINARD Eddie Jean Kennedy Brainard went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, in a local hospital. Eddie Jean was born Nov. 16, 1939, in San Angelo to John and Ethel Crawford Kennedy. She grew up in San Angelo. She was a faithful member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Joe Kennedy and Jynona Faye Patterson; and two brothers, A.Q. Kennedy and Robert Ray.
