Jessie Hicks Jake Grimes Jr., 83, of San Angelo died at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000. He was born Jan. 31, 1917, in Talpa, Texas. Jake was a World War II veteran and owner of Grimes Baxter Radiator Shop. He married Ollene Ratliff Aug. 21, 1940, in San Angelo and was a member of Harris Avenue Baptist Church. He was a founding member of San Angelo Clay Bird Association. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at St. Luke United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Lumpkin officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Mr. Shannon was born Jan. 31, 1923, in Valera, Texas, to Mary Etta Hollis and Perryman Boyd Shannon. He married LaVerne Timberlake of Vera, Texas, on June 2, 1950, at the First Methodist Church in Levelland, Texas. After moving to Levelland in 1926, he joined the Boy Scouts, attended the first national Boy Scout Jamboree of 1937 in Washington, D.C., and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Upon graduation from Levelland High School in 1939, he attended Texas Tech University and graduated in 1943 with a degree in government. Mr. Shannon joined the U.S. Navy and served as lieutenant in the Navys amphibious forces in the Pacific during World War II. Upon the wars end, he finished his law degree at Southern Methodist University in 1951. In 1952, he joined the law firm of Upton, Baker and Griffis, now known as Shannon, Porter, Johnson, Pfluger, Davis and Joynton LLP, in San Angelo. Mr. Shannons law practice spanned almost 50 years in the Concho Valley. Mr. Shannon was very active in the San Angelo community. He served on numerous charitable boards, was a charter member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, and found great joy and satisfaction in his involvement as a Scoutmaster and leader with the Boy Scouts of the Concho Valley Council. He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew, James Paulette. The deceased is survived by his wife, LaVerne of San Angelo; four children, Jan Thomas and husband, Dan, and Patrick Shannon and wife, Jamie, all of San Angelo, Mike Shannon and wife, Cindy, of Fort Worth, and Bill Shannon and wife, Michelle, of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Dominguez and Jerrod Thomas of San Angelo and Becca and Caitlyn Shannon of Fort Worth; two sisters, Mary Paulette and Katherine Weeks, both of San Angelo; and many nieces and nephews. ROBERT L. BOB NICHOLS Robert L. Bob Nichols passed away at his home on Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, after a courageous battle with lung disease. Bob was born Feb. 11, 1927, in San Angelo to William H. and Sarah Nichols. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the Army during the Korean War. Bob retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 40 years. He attended Chadbourne North Church of Christ where he served as a deacon for 30 years and as an elder for 12 years. LEONARD POTTER Leonard Potter, 74, of San Angelo died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at his residence. Mr. Potter was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Callahan County, Texas. He married Doris James Oct. 29, 1946, in Brownwood. They celebrated their 54th anniversary this year. He worked for Pool Co., starting in 1954 and retired in 1986. He was considered the best down hole man in this part of the country. He was well-known and respected by many oilfield company men in Texas. He took great pride in having a personal working relationship with Frank Pool and being employed by Pool Company. He was a World War II veteran, serving in Europe and the Philippines. Services are pending at McCoy Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries ROBERT L. `BOB' NICHOLS Robert L. ``Bob'' Nichols passed away at his home on Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, after a courageous battle with lung disease. Bob was born Feb. 11, 1927, in San Angelo to William H. and Sarah Nichols. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the Army during the Korean War. Bob retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 40 years. He attended Chadbourne North Church of Christ where he served as a deacon for 30 years and as an elder for 12 years. Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Yvonne; three children, Deborah Wilson and her husband, Payton, of Corpus Christi, Rodney Nichols and Kristi Dobbins and her husband, Doug, all of San Angelo; six grandchildren, Shayne Wilson and his wife, Allison, of Houston, Ashley Kilgore and her husband, Justin, of Columbus, Ohio, Eric and Brandon Nichols, and Turner and Jordan Lee Dobbins, all of San Angelo; and one nephew, Roger Howell and his wife, Sally, of San Angelo. CECILIA DEITERMAN SPORTSMAN Cecilia Deiterman Sportsman, 88, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in Sterling City Nursing Center. Cecilia was born Sept. 9, 1912, in Ovalo, Texas, to William Carl and Nancy Chapman Landers. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ernest Deiterman, in 1969 and her second husband, Daniel Sportsman, in 1987. She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in San Angelo. She is survived by her two daughters, Betty Tanner and husband, Jerry, of San Angelo and Jo Ann Hillger and husband, Dale, of Garden City; a stepson, Jerry Sportsman and wife, Claudia, of Cibolo; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. VERNON BATES Vernon Bates, 90, of San Angelo died in the early morning of Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 3, 1910, in rural Coryell County, near Gatesville, to James Robert and Sarah Florence Bates. He was one of eight children, five of which preceded him in death. Vernon grew up in Central Texas. He worked as a rig builder in his early adult years. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, from 1942-1945. earning an EAME campaign medal for action at Normandy Beach and the Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland campaigns. He was awarded five Bronze Star medals, one Bronze Arrowhead, and two Purple Hearts with Oak Leaf clusters. After the war, he returned to Coahoma and entered the grocery business with his brother, Carl Bates. He later bought a grocery store in Menard where he worked until 1979 when he retired and moved to San Angelo. Vernon married Billie Jeann Schneider on June 4, 1949. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jeann; and three children and their spouses, Gary and Louann Bates of San Marcos, Linda and Tom Gossett of San Angelo, and Donna and Jack Wiggins of Corpus Christi. Other survivors include one brother and his wife, J.W. and Elsie Bates of Gatesville; one sister, Zelma Bates Ricketts of Killeen; seven grandchildren, Kris and Lacy Bates, Shanna and Wade Duncan, Jenny, Sandy and Lauren Wiggins; and a large extended family of nieces and nephews. The family extends immeasurable and heartfelt gratitude to Hospice of San Angelo for all the loving care of Vernon during his final weeks.
