NANCY CAMP DEAN PECOS - Nancy Camp Dean, 84, lifetime resident of Pecos, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, at Reeves County Memorial Hospital. Born on Aug. 30, 1916, Mrs. Dean was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jim Camp, early residents of Pecos. She graduated from Pecos High School in 1934, where she was football queen. She graduated from Texas Christian University in 1937, and then attended Babson College. She married John Robert ``Bob'' Dean on July 21, 1938. She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church of Pecos and was active in the Merry Wives Club for more than 50 years. She is survived by her four children, Robert Camp ``Bobby'' Dean of Pecos, Nancy Dean Egan of Dallas, David Jim Hilliard Dean of Sydney, Australia, and Mary Bird Dean Bowman of Austin; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Egan, Katherine Egan Bennett, Mary Egan, Dorothy Dean, Daniel Dean and Jonathan Bowman; one stepgrandchild, Laura Quinonez; and two step-great-grandchildren, Jennifer Bennett and Mark Bennett. MARGARET TERRILL Margaret Terrill, a San Angelo resident since 1941, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in a local nursing home. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, with Dr. Jerold McBride, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home. Born to W.E. and Gay Moore in Brownfield on May 13, 1916. Mrs. Terrill finished high school in Levelland and married Clarence Terrill, her high school sweetheart, on March 6, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1973. Also preceding her in death were her parents and her twin sister, Mildred Mickkelsen. Mrs. Terrill is survived by three children, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Her children and their spouses are Dr. Robert and Barbara Rowland and Burt and Dela Terrill, all of San Angelo, and Burl and Jan Terrill of Mertzon. Her grandchildren are Susan Rowland Butler and husband, Clay, of Austin; Scott Rowland of San Antonio; Stacy Rowland of Seattle, Wash.; Kim Terrill Ivey and husband, Toby, of New Braunfels; Tammy Terrill Glass and husband, Jason, and Mike Terrill and wife, Melanie, all of Brownwood; Kent Terrill and wife, Vicki, and Craig Terrill and wife, Melodi, all of San Angelo; and step-granddaughter, Kayja Powers and husband, Barry, of Philadelphia. Mrs. Terrill was a generous and loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend. She was a homemaker whose greatest pleasures were family and friends. HERMAN PAUL HAGELSTEIN Herman Paul Hagelstein decided that, after 91 Christmases, it was time to go celebrate with Jesus himself. So, on Dec. 27, 2000, he bid farewell to San Angelo for the last time. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, in Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Midway Cemetery in Coleman County. Herman had the rare distinction of working for Coca Cola for 70 years, doing everything from bottling to painting signs. He built his own home, and with his wife Lucile, raised two daughters and a son, Rosemary Ward, Georgia Probst and Herman Hagelstein Jr. He was a faithful and selfless husband for 65 years. His good humor, crazy antics and ready smile will be missed, except by Lucile, who has been waiting for her husband since April. Besides his three children, he left three sisters, Elisabeth Ludecke, Dora Hayter and Meta Simmons; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Hasta la vista, Abuelo. KENNETH M. DURHAM TEXARKANA - Kenneth M. Durham, 95, of Garland and formerly of Texarkana was born March 27, 1905, in DeQueen, Ark., and died Dec. 26, 2000, after a brief illness. He moved to Texarkana in 1915 when his father, Carl C. Durham, opened a grocery store at the corner of 16th and Maple (now Texas Avenue). Mr. Durham worked in the telephone industry for 40 years. He was a member of the Independent Telephone Pioneers Association. After serving in several management positions for the company in San Angelo, he retired from GTE at the age of 65. He was an amateur radio operator who donated his time serving as radio amateur civil emergency service operator. Mr. Durham was instrumental in assisting GTE to obtain and operate radio equipment for use in emergencies. His call letters were K5MCF. He is survived by two sisters, Florence Pickens and Levonne Davis; a son, Kenneth Durham Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Durham; his grandchildren, Kenneth Durham III, Karen Davis, Lori Chastain, Carl Durham, Jason Davis; a nephew, Robert Davis; a niece, Kay Rossman; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. Mr. Durham took care of his wife of 71 years, Virginia, during her long illness. She died in 1995. He was healthy and self-sufficient past his 95th birthday. He passed away peacefully in the medical center of Plano the day after Christmas. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a kind and gentle man. We will always remember him with love. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at East Funeral Home. ROLAND ROY MCCULLOUGH Roland Roy McCullough passed from this life at 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000. He was born to Walker and Myrtle McCullough on July 29, 1910, in Poteet. Shortly after he graduated from high school in 1929, the family moved to San Angelo. Roland was a true pioneer telephone man in West Texas, starting to work with the old San Angelo Telephone Company in the early 1930s. He worked through many different positions in the company and participated in the installation of the dial telephone system which replaced the central operators. The company became GTE in 1953, and some time later he became district manager and then central division manager for the company. He retired at age 65 but was retained as a consultant for awhile and finally retired again while holding the position of retiree liaison. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting and traveling, especially with his sons and many close friends. In recent years he has enjoyed the company of long-time friends over the domino table. Roland is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gene Joiner McCullough, and two sons, Duane of Sugar Land, and Rodney and wife, Lee Ann of Houston. Grandchildren are Steve McCullough and wife, Grace, and son, Walker, of Aberdeen, Scotland; Laura Downman and husband, Burch, of Katy, and children, Rawleigh and Reagan; Lane McCullough and wife, Karen, of Austin, and son, Mason; Robin Smith and husband, Doug, of Austin, and son, Carson. He is also survived by a sister, Alva Wheeler of Poteet, and many nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Joe Collyns, Bob Levo, Vernon Morris, Rex Bailey, Gene Vickers, Al Holcomb and Don Mortimer. After retiring, he farmed and ranched in the San Angelo area for many years. Robert was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed his game chickens and hound dogs. During his last days Roberts many friends and hunting buddies and all the good times they had together were uppermost in his mind. She was one of 13 children; five brothers and six sisters preceded her in death. She attended public schools in Gonzales County. In 1932, she met and married Milton DeWitt Sr. She and her family moved to San Angelo in 1947. In 1973, she moved to Santa Maria, Calif., and returned to San Angelo in 1990. She was a member of Greater Saint Paul A.M.E. Church. She worked several years as a domestic worker and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Milton DeWitt Sr.; two sons, Harvey DeWitt and Troy DeWitt; and three daughters, Johnell DeWitt, Vella DeWitt and Wanda DeWitt. SONORA George Edward "Smitty" Smith Sr., 76, of Sonora died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in a San Angelo hospital. He was married to Hilda Luckie on Nov. 21, 1946, in Ozona. He was a World War II veteran, having served in Europe with the 1st U.S. Army. He finished college in three years and served as manager in all business departments for General Motors for 36 years, winning numerous honors. He was a member of the Legion of Leaders, Chevrolet Hall of Fame, Chamber of Commerce, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Church of Christ serving wherever needed. He was parts manager and inspector for Morriss Brothers Construction until retirement. He drove a school bus for the Sonora ISD for a number of years. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Hilda of Sonora; one son, George Edward "Eddy" Smith Jr. of San Angelo; one aunt K Dell Donaldson of San Angelo; a sister-in-law, Irma Luckie of San Angelo; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was graduated valedictorian of her class at Central High School in Fort Worth and continued her education at Texas Christian University where she graduated with highest scholastic honors. She was listed in the College "Whos Who." Mary Agnes was married on Aug. 18, 1937, in Fort Worth at Westminster Presbyterian Church to Clifford W. Williams. Dr. Williams served as pastor at Sweetwater and as assistant minister at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, before going to Ridglea Presbyterian Church in 1948. She was a member of Ridglea Presbyterian Church, Mary Isham Keith Chapter D.A.R., The Womens Club of Fort Worth, Rose Lisenby Shakespeare Club, The Hugenot Society and English Speaking Union. Through the years Mary Agnes taught adult church school classes, been general secretary of the church school and a roving moderator for the Circle Bible Studies. She served on the Council of the Women of the Church for many years. She was a synodical chairman of White Cross for the Synod of Texas in 1962-63, Presbyterial president from April 1966 to April 1968. The Women of the Church of the Presbytery of Central Texas presented a Life Membership to Mrs. Williams in 1971. Mary Agnes Williams typified the highest qualities found in a servant of the Lord, ever working at her husbands side for the benefit of the church and mankind. She loved working with the public, and was never happier than when she was helping others as a nurses aide or as a teachers aide. Minnie married Clifton Wyatt in 1934. He preceded her in death in 1953. She later married James Nutt, who is also deceased. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Cathye and Roy Moon, as well as by the "loves of her life," her granddaughter, Alyson and Andrea Moon. She also is survived by two sisters, Josie Pilgrim of Lorena and Evelyn Brannan of Odessa, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She is in a far better place now, but she will be greatly missed by those left behind. She was born Aug. 15, 1913, in Jacksboro, Texas, to Waldo Kennedy and Myrtle Stiffler Kennedy. She married W.A. McKinney on Nov. 16, 1940, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1981. She lived in Harlingen for 21 years where she worked in real estate sales and management for Sun Valley Realty. She died on Jan. 4, 2001, at the age of 82 years. She was a resident of the Robert Lee Care Center. Rual was the loving, devoted wife of Benny Emert from Aug. 15, 1940, until his death in 1988. Rual and Benny devoted their lives to each other and to their children. With great joy, they greeted each of their eight grandchildren. Rual was especially proud to become a great-grandmother three times. Rual was a gracious hostess for all family events. Large holiday gatherings at Rual and Bennys home are fondly remembered by her immediate and extended family and friends. Rual was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. She was the guiding influence in instilling a profound faith in her children and grandchildren. She considered this her most important lifes work. Rual was an employee of GTE until her retirement after 28 years of service. Upon retirement, Rual and Benny moved to their farm in Coryell County, where they lived for 15 years. There, Rual was able to enjoy the wildlife and beauties of nature that she had always been so passionate about. When the grandchildren visited, she showed them the things of nature that she loved and taught them to appreciate those things, too. Rual is remembered with profound loved and respect by all those who loved her. She spent her last 54 years as a resident of San Angelo after moving here from Sweetwater, Texas. LaNelle excelled as a vital member of the business community of San Angelo. Her career in San Angelo began in 1950 with LaNelles Interiors. She completed 40 years in the travel agency business, beginning with Magic Carpet in 1960 which was re-established as Travelin Tex in 1965. Throughout her life, LaNelle was known for her compassion, generosity and spirituality. She had an uncanny ability of embracing others and affecting them in such a positive way that their lives were changed forever. Her love of travel and art only enhanced her natural ability to teach and mentor others. LaNelle was preceded in death by her mother, Nell Strickland; sister, Mary Aston; first husband, S.W. Jackson; and second husband, Mike Manuel. She is survived by daughters, Suzanne Yarbrough of San Angelo and Dianne Medina of Dallas; grandchildren, Shaneden Alison, Cheryl Gortney and Frank Bud Medina; great-grandchildren, Channing Tate and Ryan Medina; and numerous loving friends. He is survived by his parents; two children, Amber Haverland and Justin Haverland of Melissa; two sisters, Lisa Summers and husband, Bob, of Colleyville and Charlotte Walton and husband, Ken, of Valrico, Fla.; two nieces, Elizabeth Summers and Heather Walton; two nephews, Heath Walton and Hunter Walton; three aunts, Maurene Kreuger, Viola Sparks and Pauline Nord; and one uncle, Eugene Heise. Michael worked at H-E-B Food Store as a meat cutter. Family visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, at Johnsons Funeral Home. BESSIE ESTY ISBELL AUSTIN Bessie Esty Isbell, 78, of Cedar Park and formerly of Brownwood died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001. She was active in the Baptist Church most of her life, volunteering in the church, the Salvation Army, the Association for Retarded Citizens and the Lake Brownwood Volunteer Fire Department. She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Isbell. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Robye Joan Isbell of Cedar Park and Jean I. Cochran and Scott of Round Rock; a granddaughter, Missy Cochran Cornish and husband, Barry, of Las Vegas; a grandson, Jason O. Cochran of Round Rock; greatgrandchildren, Kendall and Jason Cornish of Las Vegas; and extended family, Larry, Carol and Ashley Rooke of Georgetown and Eugene, Peggie and Vicki Cochran of Harrison, Ark. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 8, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo with the Rev. Charlie Parrish officiating. Arrangements are by All Faiths Funeral Service North Chapel. The family requests donations be made to a favorite charity. PAULINE VIRGINIA DYER Pauline Virginia Dyer, 68 of San Angelo died at 10:05 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in a local hospital. Pauline was born Feb. 7, 1932, in Bronte. She was a bookkeeper and a rancher and a member of Harris Avenue Baptist Church. She was Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include one sister, Edna Earl Box of San Angelo; two aunts, Claudia Tiny Bryant of Houston and Inez Box of Lott; cousins, Glenda and Mike Vasquez and children of Houston, Barry and Sammie Bryant and children of Houston, Weymon and Ann Box of children of Childress; special friends, Vanita Linney and Al and Polly Theirs and children; and several other cousins and friends. Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Bronte. ILAREE KENNEDY McKINNEY Ilaree Kennedy McKinney died at her home in Christoval on Thursday evening, Jan. 4, 2001. She was born Aug. 15, 1913, in Jacksboro, Texas, to Waldo Kennedy and Myrtle Stiffler Kennedy. She married A.W. McKinney on Nov. 16, 1940, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bentley W. Kennedy. She graduated from Christoval High School and Rhodes Business College in Houston. She lived in Harlingen for 21 years where she worked in real estate sales and management for Sun Valley Realty. She was owner of McKinney Real Estate in Christoval for 24 years until her retirement in 1996. She was a member of the Christoval United Methodist Church and the Oda Lee Keyes Sunday school class. Service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7, in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Phil Steinback of the First United Methodist Church of Christoval officiating. Burial will be in Christoval Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, William B. McKinney of San Angelo and Mike McKinney and wife, Kim, of Canadian; one daughter, Mary Jane McKinney of Christoval; three grandchildren, Billy McKinney of Houston, Trisha McKinney Bauer and husband, Wyatt, of Dallas and Jake McKinney of Austin; a nephew, B.W. Kennedy and wife, Lesa, and their children, Jana and Wesley of Christoval; a stepson, Mickey McKinney and wife, Phyllis, of Los Angeles; and the mothers of her grandchildren, Sally McKinney of San Angelo, mother of Billy McKinney and Trisha McKinney, and Nancy Seewald of Amarillo, mother of Jake McKinney.
