Obituaries ALONZO GALAN ROTAN Alonzo Galan, 87, of Crowell passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001, in a Seymour Hospital. Burial will follow in Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee Funeral Home. Mr. Galan was born Dec. 7, 1913, in San Angelo to Mr. and Mrs. Feliz Galan. He married Janie Ramon on Nov. 23, 1983, in Crowell. Galan worked as a cotton ginner for many year and in the agriculture field and was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Janie Galan of Crowell; seven children; two sisters; one brother; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son. DEAN SMITH BALLINGER Dean Smith, 69, of Ballinger died Tuesday evening, Feb. 27, 2001, in Ballinger Memorial Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Dean was born May 28, 1931, in Ballinger to Dayton and Era Burnette Smith. He started working at KRUN Radio in Ballinger during his sophomore year in high school. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Upon returning to Ballinger he married Lois West on Dec. 19, 1954. He continued to work at KRUN, purchasing it in 1970 and operating it until 1995. He also owned and operated Magic Travel in Ballinger from 1977 to present. Dean was a member and Elder of the First Christian Church and was a lay minister for many years. He was a member of the Ballinger Chamber of Commerce and served as president in 1969. He was also a past-president of the Ballinger Industrial Board. He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Ballinger; two daughters, Dian Lieck and her husband, Paul, of Tega Cay, S.C., and Dena Smith and her friend, Lori, of Lubbock; one son, Lynn Smith and his wife, Laura, of Ballinger; nine grandchildren, Jill Grun, Skylar Smith, Chris Klein, Jenny Klein, Chris Champion, Tyler Smith, Kyle Smith, Kaitlin Lieck and Lauran Lieck. She was a longtime resident of Tom Green and Coke counties. She died Feb. 23, 2001, in Brownwood, Texas. Elveta was married to Ralph Ruth, a rancher, on Oct. 6, 1942. He preceded her in death. Elveta was a nurse at San Angelo Center. She is survived by her son, John Ruth of Kerrville. A private service was at the family ranch. PAT BARTON Pat Barton, 62, of San Angelo passed away Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001. Born May 24, 1938, she was the only child of Truman and Lois Johnston Ray. Pat grew up in Big Lake, Texas, where her family owned Ray Dry Goods Store. On May 12, 1956, she married Frank Barton of Philadelphia, Miss., who was a young airman stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base. Pat devoted herself to Frank and making a home for her three daughters. She enjoyed her life as an Air Force wife as she lived in Germany, Louisiana, Alaska, Minnesota, Michigan and Georgia. Upon Franks retirement in 1973, the family moved to San Angelo. Pat worked by her husbands side in several family-owned restaurants until his untimely death in October of 1946. After his death, her activities revolved around league bowling, family, her dog and part-time work at Stadium Lanes Restaurant/Heathers Cafe. In 1999, Pat was blessed with happiness again when Bill McGinnis entered her life. Pat was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Frank Barton. She is survived by her daughters, Candyce Gregston and Cathy Barton, both of San Angelo, and Cindy Parrish of Dallas; her two grandchildren, Melinda and Cassie Gregston; her companion, Bill McGinnis and his family; and by her extended family, Heather Nalepka, Lauren Henderson, Marie Eisenhut, Keith Wilson, Tom Wilson and their families. She was born in Franklin County, Ala., on April 15, 1913, to Lillie May Henderson Pace and Andrew Jackson Pace. That same year, the family moved to San Angelo where she had lived all her life. She was educated in the Tom Green County schools. Clarice was married to Charles Weldon Seals in 1933. He preceded her in death in 1995 after 62 years of marriage. Clarice was a highly energetic and enthusiastic individual who, among other things, worked many years for M System Food Stores and later as a longtime employee of Hemphill-Wells Department Store. In addition, she was an accomplished quilter and gardener. Clarice was a member of College Hills Baptist Church for many years. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Escar O. Pace; and her sister, Virginia Pace Cross. She is survived by her sister, Lee O. Pace Boatright of San Angelo; her brother, Percy J. Pace of Huntsville; her sister-in-law, Newell Johnson Pace of Houston; her sister-in-law, Marge Barsch of San Angelo; and her brother-inl-aw, J.W. Lollie was born Dec, 17, 1948, to Jess Persefield and Eva Persefield Ritter in Dalhart. Her parents preceded her in death. She married Sam Cox on Aug. 13, 1988, in Brownwood. She was a member of the Baptist church. She left behind her best friend and loving husband, Samuel T. Cox; her sons, Jessie and Daron Feemster; and daughters, Christy Allen and husband, Craig, Jamie Woods and husband, Mitchel, Marlenda Cox and Marla OConnor and husband, Richard. The light of her life were her grandchildren, Brandie and Courtney Allen, Teah, Duron, Taylor and Michael Feemster, Kody and Stephanie Woods, Trintin and Kinzie OConnor and baby Connor Thomas on the way. KATHERINE HARVEY WREN Katherine Harvey Wren, 95, longtime San Angelo resident, passed away Friday, March 2, 2001, in Hillsborough, N.C., after an illness of one week. She was in Duke Hospital in Durham, N.C., before going to a Hospice facility. Katherine had been a resident of San Angelo from 1929 until September 2000, when she moved to Durham, N.C. She was born July 12, 1905, in De Leon, Texas, and was the eldest child of Roy R. Harvey and Kate Higginbotham. Katherines father was president of the Farmers and Merchants National Bank of De Leon, and her mother was a member of the family who operated a chain of department stores, lumber companies and funeral homes. Katherine attended Tarleton and Hardin-Simmons University and was a teacher for a brief time. She was married to Leroy Wren April 25, 1929, in De Leon. In 1932, Katherine became a member of the 32 Club in San Angelo, worked as a Girl Scout volunteer and was an avid bridge player. After her husbands death in 1991, Katherine became a resident of Rio Concho Manor and later Rio Concho East. Her three sisters and one brother all predeceased her, as did one niece. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Norma and Max Preston of Hillsborough, N.C.; a grandson, Grant Preston of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Brian and Katie Preston of Durham, N.C., and their children, Katherines great-grandchildren, Ben, Abby and Deirdre Preston. Katherine also is survived by two nieces, Peggy Clay of Kilgore and Carolyn Labac of Dallas; and three nephews, Herb Young of Euless and John Pittman and Steve Melton, both of Dallas. GEORGE EARL BENBOW ANAHUAC George Earl Benbow, 70, of Anahuac died Thursday, March 6, 2001, at the Bayside Community Hospital in Anahuac. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, in Sterling Funeral Home Chapel. George was born May 17, 1930, in Galion, Ohio, to John and Myra Fletcher Benbow. He was a former resident of Brady and Austin and had resided in the Anahuac area for the past six years. He enlisted in the Army in 1948 and attained rank of tech sergeant while a member of the 45th Mechanized Calvary. He was honorably discharged in 1951. He returned to Galion High School and graduated in 1953, where he met and married Carol Ann Hathaway. He attended Ohio State University and became the recreation director of Boys Village in Smithville, Ohio, in 1956. In 1959, he moved his family to Quincy, Ill., where he was assistant superintendent of Chaddock Boys School. He became program director of West Texas Boys Ranch near San Angelo in 1960. He was executive director of San Angelo Servicemans Center from 1961 to 1965. He was a member of the San Angelo Recreation Board for two years and served as president for one year. He entered the governments civil service in 1965 by assuming duties of service club director at Goodfellow Air Force Base. He was promoted to chief of recreation services at Goodfellow in 1967. He served the same positions at Sembach Air Force Base, Germany; Barksdale AFB, La.; Alconbury AFB, England; and Bergstrom AFB, Austin, where he retired in 1987 after 26 years of government service. During his government civil service years, he was promoted from civil service grades GS8 to GS12. He received five outstanding performance awards, four with-in grade quality step increases and two sustained superior performance awards. In 1980, while at Goodfellow, he received the U.S. Air Force Training Command Outstanding Recreation Director of the Year Award. He was a member of the Galion Ohios Masonic Lodge AF&AM, and was also 32nd degree Scottish Rite of Waco. Mr. Benbow was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol Ann Benbow in 1995; a brother, Jim Benbow; and a sister, Helen Betula. Obituaries ALBERT HENRY SPREEN BALLINGER Albert Henry Spreen passed away March 6, 2001, in Ballinger Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Arrangements are by Rains-Seale Funeral Home. Mr. Spreen was born Jan. 16, 1895, at the family ranch. His parents were William and Mary Herring Spreen. He was home-tutored and attended a community school where he made lifelong friends. He lived all his 106 years on the ranch. Mr. Spreen married his bride of 77 years, Mathilda Lange Spreen, Dec. 23, 1923. He was a Presbyterian. Among his interests were playing dominoes, barbecues, his livestock, a favorite horse named Snip, watching baseball, a sincere interest in government and he voted in every general election. His most exciting times were the ranch activities of branding, shearing and shipping livestock to market. Mr. Spreen is survived by his wife, Mathilda Spreen, two sons, Alvin Spreen and his wife, Janice, Ralph Spreen and his wife, Joyce, and a daughter, Julia Spreen, all of Ballinger; a nephew, Fred Spreen and his wife, Wanda; two nieces, Zelda Hendricks and Helen Williams and husband, Jack; a grandniece, Judy Graves and her husband, Thomas, and a special niece, Joyce Spreen; three grandsons, Kevin Spreen and his wife, Karol, Robb Spreen and Stuart Spreen and his wife, Gwynne; two granddaughters, Gay Ann Fuller and her husband, James, and Kathy Cowden and her husband, Sam. She married H. Ray Henderson in Midland, Texas, on July 21, 1951. She graduated from Aladdin Beauty School while living in Odessa. Although Jodie and her husband lived in various West Texas towns, they left Odessa in 1965 to moved to Ozona where she was a member of the First Baptist Church. There they owned and operated the Whites Auto Store until they retired in 1989. They moved to San Angelo in January 1998. Jodie was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Thurman Buck and Leon Buck. Survivors include her husband, H. He was a rancher in West Texas for more than 50 years and was a member of The Heights Baptist Church. Mr. Campbell was preceded in death by his wife, four brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Pelzel and her husband, Dennis, of San Angelo and Doris Hull of Sonora; eight grandchildren, Albert Bartz and wife, Kay, and Bobby Bartz and wife, Janice, all of San Angelo, Becky Collins of Sonora, Joey Pelzel and wife, Susan, of Frisco, Janice Allison of Wall, Brenda Valliant and husband, Tom, of Sonora, Bruce Bartz and wife, Kitty, of Midland and Beth Settle and husband, Randy, of Granbury; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several special nieces and nephews. DAVID MALCOLM SMITH David Malcolm Smith was born March 2, 1933, in San Angelo. He was the son of Paul M. and Margaret Harris Smith and the grandson of pioneer rancher, Frank L. Harris. David grew up in San Angelo and San Antonio, graduating from Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio. He then went on to Trinity University, earning a degree in accounting, following with postgraduate work at the University of Texas. On his return to San Angelo, he married Jan McDougall and established a successful accounting practice with Jack Ransom. He later moved to Tampa, Fla., to serve as budget director for GTED. After living in Tampa for several years, David and Jan returned to San Angelo in 1973 to help with the family ranching business. In 1977, David and Jan founded Adventure Travel, which they have operated since. Davids personal and professional accomplishments were numerous. He was very active with the American Society of Travel Agents and held many board and committee positions. He served as chairman of the board for Consolidated Travel Services and was a great champion for the travel industry as a whole. He was also a board member of First City National Bank. An avid historian, David was chairman of the Texas Forts Trail board and past board member of Fort Concho. Additionally, he was a faithful Episcopalian who loved the church. He served as senior warden and vestry member at Emmanuel Episcopal Church as well as St. Johns in Tampa. An accomplished photographer, David took beautiful images of people and places around the world. He was a skilled speaker, who delighted in telling stories and evoking smiles and laughter from those around him. He is survived by his wife, Jan; his three children, Leasel Smith, Shannon Smith Stephens and her husband, David Stephens, and Margaret Victoria Smith; brother, Frank Smith and wife, Gloria; brother, Andy Smith and wife, Bonnie; brother- and sister-in-law, Jim and Joy McDougall; cousin and friend, Jim Scott; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He also has two beautiful grandchildren who were the light of his life, Harris Stephens and Helen Stephens. David was loved by many, many people who will miss his humor and love of life. NOLA SHANNON DRAPER CARTER SPIVEY Nola Shannon Draper Carter Spivey went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 8, 2001, after a recent stroke. The seventh of nine children, Nola was born March 26, 1916, in Pontotoc, to Lee Draper and Nicolena Calloway Draper. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Sam E. Carter and more recently by her second husband, James R. Spivey. Nola was a beautician and cosmetology instructor for many years. She attended the LOreal School in Paris, France and Wella School in Darmstadt, Germany. She was co-owner and operator of Carters Tortilla and Tamale Factory and the Red Bluff Country Store. She enjoyed attending TOPS Club meetings and was an officer of Hammond Organ Society. She loved caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She made many friends who adored her. She is survived by her brother, George Draper and wife, Corinne, of Eldorado; sisters, Helen Terry and husband, Merle, of San Saba, and Ardelia Rutherford of Abilene; children, Nora Godin and husband, Ray, of Salt Lake City, Sam D. Raymond and Kathryn Cates were married in San Angelo in 1933. Kathryn preceded him in death on March 22, 2000. Raymond had an irrigated farm on which he also raised registered Angus cattle. The farm was sold in 1947 and the couple moved to Big Spring. He was coowner of Covington-Posey Tractor Co. In 1953 they returned to San Angelo. He was co-owner of Covington-Lock Sporting Goods for a number of years. He sold his part of the business to his partner and became an employee and stockholder of San Angelo Die Casting & Manufacturing Co. He retired in 1976. Raymond was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. He is survived by his sister and her husband, Syree and Paul Johnson of San Angelo; a nephew, Ronnie Fox and his wife, Doris, of San Angelo; a niece, Kay Fox Good and her husband, Bill, of Dallas; four great-nephews, Mack Fox of Chicago, Calvin Deck Fox and his wife, Traci, of San Angelo, Chet Good of Dallas and Travis Good of Hawaii. MARY MITCHAM ULRICH Mary Mitcham Ulrich, 62, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at her home with family and close friends at her bedside, following a brief but valiant battle against lung cancer. Mrs. Ulrich was born Dec. 28, 1938, in San Angelo to F. Grady and Elizabeth Childress Mitcham. Her parents predeceased her. She attended San Angelo public schools until she entered St. Marys Hall in San Antonio, graduating in the class of 1956. She spent many fun-filled summers at Camp Waldemar in Kerrville. She later attended Trinity University in San Antonio. She married Lt. Wayne E. Ulrich Dec. 23, 1960, in San Angelo and immediately moved to Landstuhl, Germany, where Lt. Ulrich was serving as aide-de-camp to the commanding general of the Ninth Hospital Center. Mrs. Ulrich was the youngest officers wife in the medical center. Mrs. Ulrich was a homemaker and greatly enjoyed raising flowers and working in her yard. She was a member of the Junior League of Midland on numerous committees and was a sustaining member of the Junior League of San Angelo. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the St. Catherines Guild. Mary was a well-known cook and dearly enjoyed entertaining friends with dinner parties in her home. Survivors include her husband, Wayne E. CORA BELLE CROUCH SMITH BURNET Cora Belle Crouch Smith of Burnet, formerly of San Angelo, went to be with the Lord Friday, March 9, 2001. Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 6, 1909, to Fred Lott Crouch and Maggie Blanche Cammack in Locker, Texas. She graduated from Richland Springs High School and San Angelo Business College. She married Richard Hudson and had one son, Bob W. Hudson of Valrico, Fla. She married C.A. Smitty Smith on May 25, 1944, and had one son, Charles F. Smith. Charles and his wife, Beverly, live at Buchanan Dam, Texas. Her husband, Smitty, preceded her in death May 29, 1967. Cora was preceded in death by sisters, Emmogene Mae Treadwell and Ruth Marie Mullins. She also was preceded in death by brothers, Henry Lott Crouch, Herbert Lee Bill Crouch, Amos Valentine Crouch, Ollie Franklin Crouch, Clyde Willard Crouch and infant twins, Lloyd and Leslie Crouch. Cora is survived by one sister, Annie V. Smith of Buchanan Dam. Roberts, 78, of San Angelo died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at his residence. Military graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, in Robert Lee Cemetery with the Rev. W.L. Stewart and the Rev. Burl Roberts officiating. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Travis was born April 27, 1922, in Robert Lee to Ed and Bernice Havins Roberts. He was a lifetime resident of the area, a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Grace Temple Baptist Church. Travis retired after 40 years as a salesman for Model Uniforms. Travis was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gene Roberts; one daughter, Brenda Roberts; and one grandson, Chas Ward. Travis was married to Katie Roberts on March 1, 1974, in San Angelo. Survivors include his wife, Katie Roberts of San Angelo; two daughters, Marla Jean Giddens of San Angelo and Janis Ward and husband, Randy, of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Keith, Kevin and Kelly Giddens and Chad Ward; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetic Association or the American Heart Association. LOUISE ROACH MIDLAND Louise H. Roach, 82, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 10, 2001. She was born Louise Hanz to Emil and Louise Hanz on June 16, 1918, in Boerne. She was the youngest of five children and was educated in Rowena. In 1939 she married Carl Wells and resided in Miles, where they had five children. She married Randolph Roach in 1955 and remained in Miles, where they had two children. She moved to Midland in 1970 and was a member of the Assembly in Christ Fellowship Church. She enjoyed family gatherings, embroidery, dominoes, bingo and watching her children and grandchildren play sports. She was a homemaker and greatly enjoyed caring for her children and grandchildren. She had been a faithful mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her sons, Carl Wells Jr. and wife, Debbie of Loveland, Colo., Claude Wells and wife, Annette of Hilo, Hawaii, and Bill Wells and wife, Ann, of Midland; her daughters, Mary Louise Webb and husband, Bob, of Clyde, Stella Swanson and husband, Jackie, of Midland and Kathy Lynn Kirby and husband, Dennis, of Midland; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The family extends its deepest appreciation to those who provided care and comfort to Louise, Dr. Gregory Bartha, the ICU and CCU nurses and attendants at Memorial Hospital and the residents and staff at Saddleridge Lodge. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 12, at Ellis Funeral Home on Andrews Highway.
