I cant help but cry, for there will always be a missing part, A sad and broken heart. Ill think of them everyday But somehow there must be a way, To be happy to know that they are in a better place. But I can almost see their face. I know that there is no more suffering, no more rain. But most of all there is no more pain. I know that there is only peace and happiness, And no such thing as sadness. I believe they will be watching us from above, Guiding and protecting us with their eternal love. OBITUARIES HORTENCIA CUELLAR BASTARDO In the early morning hours of a beautiful spring day, our beloved, Hortencia Tencha Cuellar Bastardo, reached out and took the hand of our heavenly father, and five hours after her 78th birthday, he lifted her up onto a glorious resurrection. Tencha passed from this life, at her home, at approximately 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, 2001. She passed away peacefully in her sleep with her husband and members of her loving family by her side. Hortencia was born April 2, 1923, in Del Rio, Texas, to Presentacion Chon Cuellar and Pasquala Talamantes Cuellar, but had lived in San Angelo all her life. Mom was a person who did not have much of a formal education, because like a lot of people of her day, contributing to the well-being of the family took precedence. The things that mom knew and learned were infused onto her spirit by God, and it was through this knowledge that she lived her life. Coming from a poor family, Mom learned the bartering system from her father as a way to provide and help the family. From her mother she learned of doing things the old way the right way. From her mom was instilled the faith in God, that would follow her the rest of her life. From these humble beginnings, Mom learned the meaning of responsibility, commitment, accountability and love of God and family, and she infused all these attributes in all facets of her life. Mom was a person of many talents as attested to by the many quilts she made for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, an art she learned from her beloved mother-in-law, Tomasita Bastardo. Another of her talents was cooking, and one of her greatest joys was cooking for all her family. Mom could create a gourmet meal from leftovers. Another love of her life were her plants, flowers and gardening. Mom was born with the proverbial green thumb, that she could plant a seed in solid rock and bring it to fruition. But probably the greatest gift mom was blessed with, besides her family, was compassion for others. Having several occupations in her life, the ones dearest to her heart were when she worked at nursing homes, and in her later years at Rio Concho Manor, for it was there that the love mom had for her family was shared intimately with the lonely, the sick, the forgotten, the deserted, the angry, the happy, the poor and the rich. Her ability to relate to people enabled her to make them smile, laugh and see life in a different perspective. She helped them deal with their illnesses and although suffering illnesses of her own, she always put them first. But in giving so much our mom was richly blessed. From seeing their eyes light up when she walked into their rooms, from seeing hope bloom from despair, to the many friendships that endured all obstacles. Her compassion reached out to relatives and friends who may have been in dire need or less fortunate than herself. She was always ready if a call came to organize a collection drive or participate in one, to answer the needs of an individual or family in need. When she was no longer able to get around as much, she contributed what she could from the gifts God had given her. She accomplished all this and more, with very little, but with a heart as big as Texas. Hortencia married George F. Bastardo on Nov. 16, 1940, and formed a union that would persevere through good and bad. With her husbands help she raised five children and never wavered in her commitment to them, ever ready with a shoulder to cry on, or an ear to bend. Like the plants and flowers that she loved so much, her children were the seeds that she nourished with her love, understanding, counsel, faith and patience. She lived to see her children blossom and was proud of all of them. From these seeds, little seedlings grew her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they filled her heart with joy. Hortencia was preceded in death by her parents, Presentacion and Pasquala (Talamantes) Cuellar; two children who died at birth, David and Tomasita Bastardo; her grandson, Steven Bastardo; daughter-in-law, Sylvia Bastardo; her brothers, Esau and Abel Cuellar; and nephews, Gustavo Cuellar and Juan Cuellar. Hortencia is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, George F. Bastardo with whom she shared her life, her hopes, her dreams and her talents. She loved her life with Daddy, as she so affectionately called him. Together they loved to go to dances, fishing, day camping by themselves and vacations. She was the moving force that walked beside him, and together, they took on life. Hortencia also is survived by her daughter, Margaret Renovato and husband, Ruben, of San Angelo and her sons, George F. Bastardo Jr. and wife, Elaine, of Green Valley, Ariz, Armando Bastardo and wife, Alicia, Richard Bastardo and wife, Elena and Armando Bastardo Jr., all of San Angelo. Hortencia also is survived by 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister, Elvira Cuellar, sister-in-law, Trini Cuellar, and brother-in-law, Arturo Bastardo and wife, Ofelia, all of San Angelo; a very special niece, Ada Bain and husband, Albert; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous personal and family friends, all dear to her heart. Although mom has gone to that eternal garden in the sky, the memories that she planted in this life are in full bloom. Tis no wonder, on this beautiful spring day the scent of flowering blossoms fills the air. This is our moms legacy. We love you, Mom! Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 6, at St. Marys Catholic Church with burial following in Calvary Cemetery in San Angelo. Pallbearers will be granddaughters, Linda Rodriquez, Elizabeth Gonzalez, Lamar Ramirez, Shantelle Bastardo, Jessica Bastardo and special friend, Linda Sepeda. The family would like to extend its deepest appreciation to the nurses and aides on the Fifth Floor North of Shannon Medical Center for the care and concern given to Hortencia; also to Hospice of San Angelo, represented by Donna Ferguson, Bobby Brandt, Carilyn Talley, Al Stevens and Gene Sherrod for the compassion and sensitivity shown to her and her family; also to Home Patient and Myers Drug for their professionalism in attending to moms medicinal and equipment needs, to Sister Bridgett, Father Voity, Father Terry and all the church groups and individuals from St. Marys and St. Josephs for all their uplifting prayers and support; to our sister Margaret, and nieces, Lamar and Melissa, for staying by moms and dads side these trying days. God bless you all. Paz! Paz! Cuan dulce paz! Es aquella que el padre me da; Yo le ruego que inunde por siempre mi ser, En sus ondas de amor celestial. The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Southgate Church of Christ with Paul Shero officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with arrangements by Johnsons Funeral Home. Eunice Gibson was born Jan. 29, 1909, to John R. and Mattie Lou Hendrick in Uvalde County. She was the youngest of six children and was named after Eunice in the Bible. Her early years were spent working hard at school, and in the gardens and fields. Her years at home saw the family move to New Mexico and back to Texas. She especially loved to spend time in the orchards and she learned to make the most scrumptious peach cobbler! She married William T Gibson on Sept. 28, 1928. They met while she was an elevator operator and he was a cab driver. Their marriage endured and grew strong through the hard times of the Depression, as they welcomed three children, and as they watched their family grow in faith and love for 68 years. T and Eunice were members of Southgate Church of Christ. Everyone who knew Eunice appreciated that Bible-reading and homemaking were a daily ritual for her. Even after T passed away in 1997 and her health prompted a move to a different home, she continued to display that sweet spirit that had always encouraged family and friends. She was a great blessing to her children Bill Gibson and wife, Alva, Jim Gibson and wife, Cathy, and Betty Jean Gartman and husband, Kenneth, all of San Angelo. She always had a hug or a story for her grandchildren Sharon Yancy, Linda Weaver, Terry and Phyllis Gibson, Ronnie and Pat Gibson, Stephen and Carrie Gartman, and Scottie and Jamie Gartman. She was sweet Grandma with the Hammer to her great-grandchildren Jeremy and Jordan Yancy, Ashley Weaver, Tiffany and Timothy Gibson, Zachary, Felicia, Brandon and Madeline Gibson and Laura Gartman. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Arthur Smith, Bob Smith, Claud Smith, Buddy Smith, and friends, Mason Backus and Lawrence Thompson. Honorary pallbearers will be Grady ONeal and Jim Vinson. A very special thanks to Melanie Cox of VistaCare Family Hospice. Memorials may be made to Southgate Church of Christ or VistaCare Family Hospice. Eunice Gibson always looked to the Lord for her answers, and he made her very strong. She brought up good kids, and always instilled those strong Christian values into everyone she came in contact with. She has been a rock solid example of how a Christian should live. She has blessed us all, and well always remember her for the example she has been. We love you, Grandma. 04/07/01 Funerals, Death Notices and Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Funerals TODAY SAN ANGELO Edgalee Burrows, 79, at 10 a.m. at Johnsons Funeral Home; burial in Fairmount Cemetery.
