The race was over, the course completed and the victory won as he received the promise of eternal life and a crown that will last forever. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27) He met the Lord at the age of 12 at the First Baptist Church in Mineola, Texas. This personal relationship with the Lord became the foundation for Durwoods life, a life that was committed to serving and sharing the Lord. He was a devoted husband, having met and married Armenta Ragsdale in 1944. That commitment continued for 56 years. He was a loving and caring father and grandfather who always gave support and encouragement to his wife and family. He is survived by his wife, Armenta; his sons, Ross and Russell, their wives, Tonya and Susan; and all the grandchildren, all six of them, Jessica, Ryan, Sarah, Bethany, Rhett and Mark. Originally from East Texas, Durwood moved to West Texas following high school to overcome severe asthma. He started out in the small town of Sanderson and stayed there until World War II, when Uncle Sam called him to serve in the Army. After being stationed in the Aleutian Islands for three years he returned home to marry his sweetheart, only to be shipped out to Germany almost immediately after saying I do. Serving in the infantry, he found himself on the front lines in Belgium, in one of the most famous battles of World War II, the Battle of the Bulge. Cut off by German forces, he was captured on Dec. 17, 1944, and imprisoned in Stalag IXB in Bad Orb, Germany. Several months later, he was freed from prison camp by General Patton as the war came to an end. Realizing the grace of God and remembering the foxhole commitment that he had made to the Lord, Durwoods desire was to serve the Lord in any way he could. This commitment eventually led him to First Baptist Church, San Angelo, where he was hired as building and grounds supervisor. Having become a member of First Baptist before becoming their employee, he viewed his job as a ministry to the Lord and his people. This was soon recognized by the church and he was ordained as a deacon. A certified carpenter, he also became skilled as an electrician, plumber, locksmith and ac/heating technician. In addition to his job responsibilities, he assisted with the sound and television ministries for weekly broadcast of services for First Baptist Church. Upon retirement, Durwood added to his ministry involvement by serving in the church nursery caring for the babies each Sunday morning. His life was a picture of Matthew 28:18-20, which says, Go and make disciples of all nation, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The lives of countless young men were touched and influenced through his work with the Royal Ambassador program at First Baptist Church. Through this Southern Baptist missions program, he became involved in local, state, national and international mission work. The primary concentration for the mission work over the years was along the Texas-Mexico border along the Rio Grande in and around Big Bend National Park, helping to build new churches and to provide for those living in the villages along the river in Mexico. In his retirement years, Durwood continued an active role in ministry by serving on the board for the Heart of Texas Baptist Encampment in Brownwood. This camp annually sees many lives changed and young men and women called into the ministry. He also continued as an active member of First Baptist Church and his local POW chapter. Durwood, Dad, Granddad left a strong Christian heritage for his family. He lived by example. What he believed was always backed up by what he did. He looked at all men equally. He loved his wife more than his own life. He was given a second chance by the Lord and he always gave others a second chance. Selfishness was never a part of his life. He lived out Matthew 6:33 But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. He was a man who would not compromise his convictions. He touched the life of each one of us, and we have been forever changed because of it. He taught us to love, to care, to be unselfish, to know the Lord above all else. As he stepped into eternity, he could truly say, I have fought the fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7) Surely the Lord welcomed him home with these words, Well done, good and faithful servant ... come and share your Masters happiness! God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be So He put His arms around you And whispered come to me With tearful eyes we watched you And saw you pass away And though we loved you dearly We could not make you stay A golden heart stopped beating Hard working hands at rest God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. Rest in peace, Mom. We love you.
