There will be no graveside service. Mr. Yates was born Dec. 7, 1925, in Christoval, Texas, to Dewey Mock Yates and Mattie Kathryn York Yates and died on April 27, 2001, in San Angelo, Texas. He suffered a massive coronary the previous evening following a presentation to the San Angelo Archaeological Society on efforts to restore the old Spanish Presidio of Menard. James book has many pages. He grew up in Eden, Texas, and spent many hours on the road with the boys to see the Menard girls. He completed high school in Eden and graduated from Sul Ross College in Alpine. He served in the Army Air Corps as an aerial gunner on B-24s in World War II and received the Purple Heart. He and Mildred Benson of Menard were married Sept. 2, 1947, and began their home in Eden, the first of many communities that would feel their influence over the next 53 years together. The early moves were spurred by the drought of the 1950s as economic conditions required changes. Homes followed in Hereford, San Antonio, Huntsville, Houston and Pattison, as James worked for the Federal Land Bank and was a mortgage loan officer for Southwestern Life Insurance Co. in Houston. He formed his own real estate appraisal firm in 1967 after earning his MAI (Member of American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers) designation. James was a devoted member and leader in the Church of Christ. He served as an elder for many years in the Spring Branch and Fry Road congregations in the Houston area. He was also an active trustee of several foundations. He was a multitalented person with many family projects, including woodworking, furniture refinishing, ranching and helping the grandchildren have a good time in the country. He built a home in Menard in 1998, where he and Mildred moved from Katy, Texas, and began community efforts in church, Menard Historical Society and restoration of the old Spanish presidio. Survivors include his wife, Mildred (Benson) Yates; daughters and sons-in-law, Diana and Douglas Hale and Karen and Steve LaGrasta, and grandsons, D.J., Derrick and Dalton Hale and Michael and James LaGrasta, all of the Katy area; a brother, Harold Yates of Fredericksburg; a sister, Carolyn Dressler of Christoval; and many nieces and nephews. James was a gentleman, dedicated to family, church, community and country. The book he has written is a reflection of the next generation. He was active in what he believed in. His presentation to the Archaeological Society the evening before his death was impressively done. As he answered questions from the audience, he appeared to be uncomfortably hot. When the meeting adjourned he walked out to get a breath of air and collapsed before he reached the car. Pallbearers will be his five grandsons. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter. The family suggests that memorial gifts are appropriate for the Church of Christ, Restoration of the Presidio by Menard Businessmen Association or to the donors favorite charity.
