He was a lifelong rancher and the founder of the Beefmaster breed. Mr. Lasater was born Jan. 4, 1911, in La Mota, the headquarters of his fathers Falfurrias Ranch in Brooks County, Texas. He was the youngest child of Ed C. and Mary (Miller) Lasater. His father was the ninth president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, serving from 1911-1912. Tom Lasaters son, Laurie, is currently serving as a director of TSCRA. Lasater graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass., in 1929. He attended Princeton University, but following his fathers death, he resigned to return to Falfurrias. On Dec. 7, 1940, he married Mary Caroline Casey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Casey of San Antonio. Mrs. Lasater, the granddaughter of West Texas ranching pioneers J.A. and Sallie Reynolds Matthews, died in 1980. In 1931, using what remained of Ed Lasaters Hereford and Brahman herds, along with purchased Shorthorn bulls, Lasater initiated the cross-breeding program, which culminated in the Beefmaster breed of cattle. The U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1954 recognized Beefmasters as the second breed created in the United States. Beefmasters now are raised in almost every state, as well as in Mexico, Africa, South America and Australia. In 1939, Lasater was elected to the board of directors of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. He resigned in 1953, after moving his cattle operation to Matheson, Colo. During the 1940s he served on the Texas Livestock Sanitary Commission. He was a founding member of the Pikes Peak Cattlemens Association, and the National Cattlemens Beef Association.
