She was raised in Buffalo, N.Y., where she also received her teaching degree. She taught at Sacred Heart School, Holy Angels School, art at John Glenn Junior High School and at PAYS before she retired. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Gerald F. Boyle; her parents; and brothers, Phil, Joseph, and Frank Sturniolo. King, 89, of Odessa died Saturday, May 12, 2001, after a lengthy illness. She was born March 2, 1912, in Itasca, Texas, to Millard and Nancy Blissit (Milford) who preceded her in death. She married Gervis King Aug. 16, 1930, in Bloomington, Texas, who also preceded her in death in 1964. Before her retirement she worked for the San Angelo Independent School District at the Central High School snack bar and moved to Odessa in 1986 from San Angelo. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Evelyn Venable (Darrell) of Odessa; son, Robert A. King (Brenda) of Kerrville; three grandchildren, Vicki Peacock of Odessa, Shannon Minton of Kerrville and Bretta King of Cedar Park; 10 greatgrandchildren, Tony Mayhar (Courtney) of Stephenville, Margie Niver (Jeremy) of Shreveport, La., Pam Peacock, Matthew and Kourtney Jarrell, all of Odessa, Ryan and Jessica King, both of Cedar Park, Kevin, Tiffany and Joseph King, all of Kerrville; and one great-great-grandchild, Michelle Niver of Shreveport. Local arrangements are by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. W.W. THETFORD JR. The Honorable Walter W. Bud Thetford went home to be with the Lord Sunday night, May 13, 2001, after suffering a massive stroke ten days earlier. Judge Thetford is survived by his wife, Madeleine Thetford of San Angelo; three children, Walter W. Terry Thetford III of San Angelo, Linda King of Spicewood and Douglas A. Thetford of San Angelo; a sister, Opal May Vest of Hatch, N.M.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and ten nieces and nephews. Judge Thetford was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Motley County, Texas, to Walter W. and Nancy Jane Oates Thetford. He lived in Texas all his life and was a veteran of World War II. After graduating from Texas Tech in 1949, he was a school teacher for eight years and was elected county judge of Coke County in 1959 and served until 1978. He also served as president of the Concho Valley Council of Governments for seven years. Service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the First United Methodist Church of Robert Lee. Burial will follow in Paint Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home of San Angelo. LETA MAE BARKER Leta Mae Barker passed away Monday, May 14, 2001. Leta, the youngest of 13 children, was born Jan. 31, 1913, to John Milam and Helen Williams. Leta and Richard Alton Barker were married May 4, 1935. She was preceded in death by her husband on April 4, 1966. Leta is survived by her son, Richard Barker and wife, Ruthie, of San Angelo; daughters, Joyce Lambert and husband, Harlan, of Fort Stockton, Pat Stephens and husband, John E., of Robert Lee and Judi Lubke and husband, Tony, and Sheri Luther and husband, Jerry, all of San Angelo; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Merle Stuart of Brownwood; one special niece, Leta Mae Normand of Big Spring; and many other nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to a favorite charity. Dr. W.B. HOOT GIBSON STANFORD, Calif. Dr. W.B. Hoot Gibson, 84, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2001, at his residence. He was born and raised in Eldorado. His uncle, Buck Bailey, made it possible for him to attend Washington State University. He received his MBA and Ph.D at Stanford School of Business. Gibson was one of the founders of Stanford Research Institute. In recognition of his lifetime achievements, SRI established the Weldon B. Gibson Achievement Award in 1999. Survivors include his wife, Helen; son, David; grandson, Ruben; and cousins, Mrs. T.J. Bailey of Ozona, Joe Bailey of San Angelo, Martha Bailey Henderson of Eldorado and Louise Kennedy of Austin. A memorial service will held on July 10 in Memorial Church at Stanford. GARY KUEPERS Gary Kuepers, 59, of San Angelo died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at his residence. Funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Greenwell officiating. Graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in Smithwick Cemetery near Burnet. Mr. Kuepers was born Sept. 20, 1941, in St. Cloud, Minn., to Peter and Agnes (Johnson) Kuepers. He was retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. He served in Vietnam during his time in the military. Gary recently retired from Ref-Chem where he was the maintenance supervisor at Amarada-Hess in Seminole. Gary was a lifetime member of VFW/American Legion Post 506 in Big Spring. Mr. Kuepers married June Morris on Aug. 2, 1996. Survivors include his wife, June Kuepers of San Angelo; five sons, Bucky, James and Paul Kuepers, all of Houston, Dee Jon Schafer of Burnet and Chris Humphreys of Dallas; a daughter, Michelle Volmer of Denton; a stepdaughter, Tracy Anderson of San Angelo; sister, Lori Lei Kuepers; two brothers, Charles and Douglas Kuepers; grandchildren, Dustin and Tosha Sears, Dillon Schafer, Kayla and Ashley Volmer; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary leaves behind fond memories for all the many lives he touched. He was a wonderful father and husband, best friend to many, but most of all, a great man to all who knew him. He spent his life in the service of others and never knew a favor too small. Until we are together again, we love you and will miss you. EDWIN R. RANDY FARRIS BALLINGER Edwin R. Randy Farris, 77, of Ballinger died Monday, May 14, 2001, at the Heritage Oaks Estate in Ballinger. He was born April 18, 1924, in Coleman County to Toliver and Roberta Ray Powers Farris. He married Lottie Sikes on Aug. 26, 1950, in Coleman. A longtime resident of Ballinger, he retired from WTU in 1986, after 32 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ballinger. Randy enjoyed hunting, gardening, camping with the Good Sam RV Club and being with his family. Survivors include his wife, Lottie Sikes Farris of Ballinger; a daughter, Charlotte Leann Farris Busch and husband, John, of Ballinger; a son, Randy Clay Farris and wife, Debbie, of San Angelo; four grandchildren, Randy Broxson and wife, Teresa, of Dallas, Katie Farris Ferich and husband, Gene, of Ballinger, and Lance Farris and Landon Farris, both of San Angelo. Twohig, Suite 301, San Angelo, TX 76901. JAMES RONNIE MOTLEY James Ronnie Motley, 55, of San Angelo passed away on May 11, 2001, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, at the Trinity Fellowship Church officiated by Pastor Billy Simmons and Associate Pastor Randy Levens. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home of San Angelo. Ronnie was born July 11, 1945, in San Angelo. He attended school in Eldorado and Mason and upon graduation he entered the U.S. Army in 1966. After being discharged, he returned to West Texas and engaged in ranching, law enforcement and trucking. He married Connie Taylor in Coyanosa on Jan. 18, 1969. They made their home in West Texas all of their married lives. They also worked as house parents at the West Texas Boys Ranch. Ronnie was instrumental in organizing the West Texas Boys Ranch Riding Club. He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Ottaberry Cavness, and his brother, Johnnie Ray Cavness. Ronnie is survived by his wife, Connie Motley of Grape Creek; one son, Tate Motley of Iraan; his father, Jessie Cavness of Mason; one sister, Dean Everett and husband, Ray, of Mason; three grandchildren, Tyler Motley, Logan Motley and Dakota Motley, all of Grape Creek; and a host of nieces and nephews. SHELBY MARSHALL KERBOW GEORGETOWN Shelby Marshall Kirby Kerbow, 85, of Georgetown passed away Sunday morning, May 13, 2001. Kirby was born July 19, 1915, to William Hill Kerbow and Mary Adelia Morgan in Bluegrove, Texas. He was raised in Henrietta, where he graduated from high school and met and married Eva Achsah Lindsey on Sept. 5, 1937. He was employed by Foxworth Galbraith Lumber Co. in 1935 where he managed the Sonora, San Angelo and Alpine lumber yards. After 50 years of dedicated service, he retired in 1985. Kirby was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners and Lions Club and served as a director of the Sunshine House of Alpine. Survivors include his wife, Achsah; son, John and wife, Joyce, of Lago Vista; daughters, Marsha Taylor and husband, Ron, of San Angelo and Susan Marcum and husband, Dennie, of Tyler. Other survivors include six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews. JOHN AUGUST CALLAHAN John August Callahan, 85, passed away Monday, May 14, 2001, after a brief illness. He was born in Palestine, Texas, on Sept. 6, 1915. He married Mildred Patrick, also of Palestine, on May 26, 1941. He served overseas in the Signal Corps and in the Merchant Marines in World War II. He began his long employment with Rowley United Theatres, later to become United Artists, in Palestine. He was later transferred to Dallas as city manager of the theaters there. While in Dallas, John was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Oak Cliff Lions Club and the Variety Club. He and his family moved to San Angelo in 1966, where he served as city manager of United Artist Theatres until his retirement in 1980. He was a Lions Club member for 55 years and a past president of the Downtown Lions Club in San Angelo, as well as past exalted ruler of the Benevolent Order of Elks. John was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church. John is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mildred; daughter, Cathy Rae and husband, David, of Houston; son, Pat Callahan and wife, Susan, of San Angelo; grandchildren, John P. JERRY MACK JOHNSON Jerry MacAulay Johnson, 73, a lifelong resident of San Angelo and well-known author, folklorist and entrepreneur, died Monday in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Military graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Fairmount Cemetery with Portis Ribble, president of Southwest Bible Institute, and Jim Murphy, minister of Northside Church of Christ, officiating. Robert Massie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Jerry Mack was born Oct. 23, 1927, in San Angelo. His father, Earnest L. Johnson, was an earlyday Realtor, and his mother, the former Jewell Gill Johnson, was a schoolteacher. When his father became ill, Jerry Mack had his childhood disabilities removed so that he could operate the real estate office. He was a licensed real estate broker at the age of 13, and held one of the oldest continuous real estate licenses in Texas. When World War II started, Jerry Mack got family permission to join the Merchant Marine at the age of 16. He served as an ordinary seaman on rusty ocean freighters carrying war material to Russia, England and other foreign ports. When he reached his 17th birthday, he enlisted in the Navy Seabees where he served with the Pacific Fleet Marine Corps amphibious operations in the invasion of Okinawa. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received during a Japanese Kamikaze attack, the Bronze Star Medal and a Navy Unit Citation. After the war, Jerry Mack attended Sul Ross State University at Alpine where he received bachelor and master degrees in agriculture. He also attended an auctioneers school in Iowa, worked as a schoolteacher for a year before becoming a traveling representative for A.R. Nisbet and Sons, a farm machinery manufacturing firm. His territory was throughout the south, southeast and southwestern states. While working for Nisbet and later as co-owner and sales manager for Supreme Feed Mill of Slaton, Jerry Mack started his vast collection of facts and folklore which led to his writing seven books, including Country Wisdom, which was on the New York Times best-seller list for a number of weeks and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. On May 25, 1956, Jerry Mack and Billie Alexander Johnson were married in San Angelo. A longtime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Texas Chapter 740 of San Angelo, Jerry Mack was honored last year when the group nominated him for the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge national award program in the adult community category. He was also a member of the American Mensa organization and the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo. In recent years, Jerry Mack was an advertising sales representative for the Ranch and Rural Living Magazine and for the San Angelo Standard-Times. She also was a work associate for Wal-Mart. Frances was a member of Baptist Temple and St. Johns Hospital Auxiliary. Frances was married to John Benes Jr. on July 12, 1947, in Fort Worth. MARGARET ELLEN NIXON ELDORADO Margaret Ellen Nixon passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, after a brief battle with leukemia. Margaret was born Sept. 11, 1934 in San Angelo to Arch and Rose Edmiston. Raised on her familys ranch in Schleicher County, she attended Eldorado public schools. In 1952, Margaret married her high school sweetheart, E.H. Nixon, Jr. Margaret graduated from Angelo State University and enjoyed a 30-year nursing career beginning at Schleicher County Medical Center where she was Director of Nurses until 1989. She recently retired as a nursing administrator for Sid Peterson Memorial Hospital in Kerrville. Throughout her career, Margaret was trusted and admired, touching the lives of many patients and colleagues. Her professional accomplishments were numerous, including being recognized as a member of the Whos Who in American Nursing by the Society of Nursing Professionals. A lifelong member of the Church of Christ in Eldorado, Margaret was an accomplished pianist, enjoyed ballroom and square dancing and the occasional fishing trip. A gracious host, her home was always open to family and friends, who could always count on a good home-cooked meal. Above all, her greatest pride was her husband and family. She is survived by her husband, E.H. After the war, Jerry Mack attended Sul Ross State University at Alpine where he received bachelors and masters degrees in agriculture. He also attended an auctioneers school in Iowa, worked as a schoolteacher for a year before becoming a traveling representative for A.R. Nisbet and Sons, a farm machinery manufacturing firm. His territory was throughout the south, southeast and southwestern states. While working for Nisbet and later as co-owner and sales manager for Supreme Feed Mill of Slaton, Jerry Mack started his vast collection of facts and folklore which led to his writing seven books, including Country Wisdom, which was on the New York Times best-seller list for a number of weeks and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. On May 25, 1956, Jerry Mack and Billie Alexander Johnson were married in San Angelo. A longtime member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Texas Chapter 740 of San Angelo, Jerry Mack was honored last year when the group nominated him for the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge national award program in the adult community category. He was also a member of the American Mensa organization and the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo. In recent years, Jerry Mack was an advertising sales representative for the Ranch and Rural Living Magazine and for the San Angelo Standard-Times. Elgie Dwight Hudson Jr., 69, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2001, at his residence. He was born Oct. 15, 1931, in San Angelo. He married Evelyn Scaife of St. Louis, Mo., on Dec. 7, 1964, in San Angelo. He served in the Air Force for four years and in the Army for 19 years. He served overseas numerous times including three tours to Vietnam. He retired after 23 years of military service in 1979. After retiring from the military, he and his family moved back to San Angelo. He became very active in the community and participated in many community efforts and organizations. He became a role model for many people. He also had an impact in the lives of everyone he touched. He was a member and deacon at Galilee Baptist Church under the Rev. Floyd Crider. He also volunteered his time assisting the elderly and anyone else in need. He had an undying love for his family and people. He will be missed by the entire family, friends and community. She was very mission minded and served the Lord for many years through the WMU many of which were at Park Heights Baptist Church. Zelma lived in Bronte for more than 35 years where she was secretary for the Kickapoo Water District and bookkeeper at Highway Garage for 18 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities including memorial fund chairman and financial secretary. She was a charter member of the Sororsis Club. Zelma was a graduate of Robert Lee High School class of 1939 and Metropolitan Business School of Dallas where she lived and worked for a time. She had also lived in El Reno, Okla., Sterling City, San Angelo and Coleman, where she was secretary for the Chamber of Commerce. Zelma was an asset to every community in which she lived. She was a superior organizer and worked hard at any project she participated in or position she held. Among the many people and things she loved were children, animals and plants. She was a compassionate, loving, faithful, loyal, truthful and thoughtful wife, mother and friend. She will be remembered and missed by many. He was born April 10, 1925, in Jiminez, Coahuila, Mexico. He moved to San Angelo while still a youth; and he worked as a chef for various Mexican restaurants, including Ricardos and Francos Cafe. He enjoyed cooking and taught many of the other cooks in the local area to take pride in how to prepare food. He had a great sense of humor, which will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He was a wonderful husband and caring father. On Dec. 24, 1969, he married Mercedes Castaneda; and they were together for the next 32 years. After a short experience in teaching she came to San Angelo in 1937, and worked at the Levines Department Store. She married Harvey Braden on Dec. 27, 1939, and settled in the Wall community where they began a farming life together for 61 years. Mom loved her flower and vegetable gardens and all things natural. Mom and Dad were inseparable in their later years. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of joy to them. Willie Mae was a member of St. Helens Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America of St. Ambrose Parish. She supported her husband in all community activities. Most recently she spent many hours playing 42 and 88 domino games. She loved meeting with the Senior Citizen Group each month. Willie Mae was known to all her family as Granny, we will all treasure our memories of her. Willie Mae is survived by her husband, Harvey Braden, three sons and three daughters. She had 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. RANDY VEE SHIREY Randy Vee Shirey of San Angelo, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio after a brief illness. Randy was born Feb. 1, 1962, in Warsaw, Ind., and graduated from Triton High School in Bourbon prior to joining the U.S. Air Force in 1981. After postings at various U.S. bases and in Korea, he was assigned to Goodfellow Air Force Base, where he spent the last nine years of his military career. Retired on April 12, 2001, SSgt. Shireys final position was a network manager analyst. Those who knew him best and will miss him most will remember Randy as a proud American who loved patriotic music and waving a flag; a devoted husband who delighted in surprising his wife with a balloon bouquet or a gourmet breakfast; a proud father who coached his son Kyles athletic teams and happily shared each new life experience with him; a loving son to whom it was always important to honor his parents; and a community volunteer who gave his time to numerous organizations, especially Angelo Civic Theatre. An impish grin, an easy-going personality that quickly turned strangers into friends and a gentleness which communicated sincere concern and compassion were gifts which endeared Randy to all who encountered him including medical personnel who cared for him during the final weeks of his life. Elgie Dwight Hudson Jr., 69, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2001, at his residence. He was born Oct. 15, 1931, in San Angelo. He married Evelyn Scaife of St. Louis, Mo., on Dec. 7, 1964, in San Angelo. He served in the Air Force for four years and in the Army for 19 years. He served overseas numerous times including three tours to Vietnam. He retired after 23 years of military service in 1979. After retiring from the military, he and his family moved back to San Angelo. He became very active in the community and participated in many community efforts and organizations. He became a role model for many people. He also had an impact in the lives of everyone he touched. He was a member and deacon at Galilee Baptist Church under the Rev. Floyd Crider. He also volunteered his time assisting the elderly and anyone else in need. He had an undying love for his family and people. He will be missed by the entire family, friends and community. Services are pending at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries WILLIE MAE SCHWARTZ BRADEN Willie Mae Schwartz Braden joined the angels in heaven on Saturday, May 19, 2001. Rosary will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 20, in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 21, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Wall. Burial will be in St. Ambrose Cemetery. Willie Mae was born to Joseph and Sophie Loika Schwartz on Oct. 1, 1914, in Lavaca County. She attended school in Moravia and college in San Marcos. After a short experience in teaching she came to San Angelo in 1937, and worked at the Levines Department Store. She married Harvey Braden on Dec. 27, 1939, and settled in the Wall community where they began a farming life together for 61 years. Mom loved her flower and vegetable gardens and all things natural. Mom and Dad were inseparable in their later years. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of joy to them. Willie Mae was a member of St. Helens Altar Society and Catholic Daughters of America of St. Ambrose Parish. She supported her husband in all community activities. Most recently she spent many hours playing 42 and 88 domino games. She loved meeting with the Senior Citizen Group each month. Willie Mae was known to all her family as Granny, we will all treasure our memories of her. Willie Mae is survived by her husband, Harvey Braden, three sons and three daughters. She had 19 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren. Survivors include, Tempe Gerngross and husband, Frank, of Wall, Wilbert Braden and wife, Joyce, of Midkiff, Norma Gilman and husband, Don, of San Angelo, Mike Braden and wife, Ruby, of Wall, Anna Bartosh and husband, Bill, of San Angelo, and James Braden and special friend, Midge Tucker, of Victoria; a brother, Alfonse Schwartz of Moravia and sister, Hilda Mikulik of Wall. Pallbearers and ministers will be grandsons and granddaughters of Willie Mae. The family requests memorials be made to a favorite charity. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home.
