Known to Ballinger residents as Salty, A.W. was born Feb. 14, 1914, in Ballinger to Bessie Jackson and Aubrey Earl Brunson. He was the oldest of five children. After his father died, Salty worked the family farm until selling the acreage in 1942 for the development of Bruce Field. On Dec. 27, 1935, he married Azelle Greenwell. They made their home in Ballinger. During the war years, they opened their home to the young avaitors who came to Bruce Fields for primary flight training. Salty was a classic, innovative entrepreneur. He built his business from the ground up with no money and second-hand equipment. To pay the bills, he worked as a mailman during the day and began milling feed at night on a lot he purchased a few blocks from the post office in Ballinger. As the business grew, Salty purchased more real estate for the site that became Brunson Feed Mill. In the four decades that followed, the milling and grain business prospered and grew to include several elevators and a cotton gin. He served farmers and ranchers throughout Runnels County, who knew him as a fair and honest businessman. He was also a generous member of the community. During the drought of the early 1950s, Salty went to Colorado with his 18-wheeler to purchase hay that he donated to area customers for their starving cattle. During the last several years, Salty enjoyed an active retirement from the grain business at the Brunson ranch in Concho County where he raised award-winning boer goats and enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. His outlook on life was always positive. He liked everyone he knew, loaned anything he had to anyone in need, always had a kind word and never smoked or drank. His hobby was making useful tools and machinery from what other people called junk. The only things he hated were mesquite trees and fire ants. He leaves behind the legacy of success through hard work. No one who knew him could outwork him. His love of family, his values, and his work ethics are a lasting inspiration to all who knew him. A.W. was preceded in death by a son, Lanny Rene Brunson; two sisters, Juanita Greenwell and Dorothy Habersang; and one brother, Roy Brunson. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Azelle; and his seven children and their spouses, Kirk and Barbara Brunson of Weatherford, Dick and Margo Reeder of Ballinger, Jerry and Diane Brunson of Richardson, Glenn and Jolene Brunson of Midland, Stephen and Joann Brunson of Ballinger, Tommy and Tina Brunson of Coppell and Phillip and Shari Buchanan of Midland. A.W. was known as Son Daddy to his 14 grandchildren, Teresa Craine and husband, Brad, Kevin Brunson and wife, Barbie, Tracy Brunson, Amy Hopkins and husband, David, Tony Reeder and wife, Lori, Tommy Reeder and wife, Pansy, Timmy Brunson and wife, Tina, Jonathan Brunson and wife, Krista, Angela Buchanan, Stephanie Brunson, Will Brunson, Karen Fava and husband, Brad, Rebecca Buchanan and Sarah Buchanan. After his naval discharge, he married Martha Martin of Eunice, N.M. Together they raised two daughters. He worked in the oil field supply business in West Texas and eastern New Mexico until his retirement. He endured difficult struggles in his life but did find serenity when involved in the works of special friend, Bill W. Daddy had a strong Christian faith and believed absolutely nothing happens in Gods world by accident. He often said his problems in life came about when he spent more time concentrating on what needed to be changed in the world rather than what needed to be changed in him. He was an avid Lady Longhorns basketball fan and proudly wore his burnt orange team jacket to every game he was able to attend. He was extremely tender hearted and could not bear to see a child or animal hurting. He taught his daughters to ride tricycles, bicycles and to skip; he played jacks and wore a sheet on Halloween to take us trick-or-treating. He left us with a lifetime of memories and the knowledge that we were loved as much as Daddy can love regardless of what else might be happening.
