Arrangements are by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries NORMAN WAYNE BARR Norman Wayne Barr, a resident of Meadow Creek Nursing Center in San Angelo since April 1998, died Thursday, June 21, 2001. He was born Dec. 19, 1924, in Cleburne to Willie L. and Corine Mabry Barr. He was an only child. Norman graduated from Lake View High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Air Force in April 1943 and served three years, including 16 months in China. He was a sergeant and installed and maintained communications equipment in the 14th Air Force Signal Detachment. After leaving the armed forces, he attended San Angelo College for two years from 1946 to 1947. He majored in pre-law and attended the University of Texas from 1947 to 1950, where he received his law degree. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta honorary legal fraternity. He married Dorothy Virginia Daniels on Nov. 28, 1947, in San Angelo at Trinity United Methodist Church. They had two children, Stacy Denise Barr and Lesley Ann Barr. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Dorothy Virginia Barr in May 1989. Norman set up law practice in San Angelo in 1950. In 1954, he joined the law firm of Sutton & Steib. In 1958, he was named assistant county attorney. He was elected county attorney on Jan. 1, 1959, and served until Oct. 1, 1968, when he resigned to go into private practice from 1968 to 1994. He retired after 44 years of loyal and dedicated service as an attorney to the West Texas area. Norman loved his family. He was a loving, caring father, husband and grandfather. Other than law, he loved his church and talked about the Lord his Savior. In his spare time he loved to fish; his favorite was deep-sea fishing in Port Aransas. He loved to take his family fishing. Survivors include two daughters, Lesley Brake of San Angelo and Stacy Dyer of Rockwall; three grandchildren, David Pinkston and Michelle Vantine, both of San Angelo, and Philip Gano of Rockwall; and three great-grandchildren. The family wants to express special thanks to the staff of Meadow Creek Nursing Center for the love and care that the staff gave Norman in the last three and a half years. CATHERINE ELEZYNNA ZINA BETSILL BRADY Catherine Elezynna Zina Betsill, 62, of Brady died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at her residence. She was born June 24, 1938, in San Angelo to Luther Lewis Gailey and Marguerite Henrietta (Savage) Gailey. She married Jerry Betsill, son of Oscar Burt Betsill and Willye McMorris Betsill of Doole, on Nov. 23, 1957. She attended San Angelo public schools, San Angelo College and Shannon School of Nursing. She received a bachelors degree in 1970 from the University of Houston and a masters degree in 1972 from Texas A&M University. She taught in Houston public schools and was sole proprietor of JRT Office Services for several years. She was a member of Brady Presbyterian Church, the Lady Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Texas State Genealogical Society, and Clayton Library Friends. She accompanied her husband through his Army service and a 38-year career with Exxon. She enjoyed living in a variety of places. She served in various volunteer positions including church librarian, church school teacher, PTA secretary, Meals on Wheels coordinator, Clayton Library Friends, public school volunteer, Laubach Literacy tutor and Richards Memorial Library board member. The family will receive friends Friday evening, June 22, at the familys house at 1507 S. Pine. LILLIAN ELOISE CADDELL Lillian Eloise Caddell, 78, passed away peacefully at her home in Christoval on the evening of Tuesday, June 19, 2001. She was born Jan. 31, 1923, in Oatmeal, Texas, to Henry and Mary Lena Boultinghouse Wilkes, the eighth of ten children and the final surviving sibling. A 1941 graduate of Burnet High School, she survived the Great Depression and worked in various trades including ship welding in Houston during World War II and meat packing in San Angelo. Eloise married James Alton Caddell on Dec. 17, 1946. She was a loving mother and devoted homemaker and was known for her love of nature and finding beauty in her surroundings. Eloise loved fishing, hunting, gardening and ranching, and is remembered by those who knew and loved her for her generous spirit and her forthright, no-nonsense approach to life. She is survived by a daughter, Melanie Reed and her husband, Ronald, of Christoval; a son, Jimmy Skylar Caddell of Austin; a granddaughter, Angela Flores and her husband, Carlos, of San Angelo; and various loved ones and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Alton Caddell; and her grandson, Justin Lee Allard. Family visitation was Thursday at Johnsons Funeral Home. Flores Sr. FRED ARTHUR ELLIS III Fred Ellis III of San Angelo passed away on June 19, 2001, at his residence. Fred was born on Feb. 8, 1939, to Fred II and Lillie Margaret Skeet Lehne Ellis. He grew up in Menard, Texas, graduated from Menard High School in 1957 and attended Texas Tech University. He was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Menard. Before his health failed, he was owner of Ellis Bait. Friends will remember him for his tremendous sense of humor and his ability to transfer that humor into cowboy art. He is survived by a son, Wade Kevin Ellis of Canyon Lake; two daughters, Gaye Lynn Ellis of New York City and Holly Elizabeth Ellis of Winter Park, Fla; also by a special cousin, Pearl Ann Smith of Newport Beach, Calif. BESSIE EMMA WHITE BURRIS BALLINGER Bessie Emma White Burris, 98, of Abilene, formerly of Ballinger, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, June 20, 2001. Survivors include her children, O.D. Burris and wife, Edith, of Arlington; Coy Burris and wife, Josie, of Sanger, Calif.; Joy Watkins of Ballinger; Ruth Holloway of Aransas Pass; Rosa Norman of Abilene; and daughter-in-law, Mildred Burris of Norton. Preceding her in death were her infant son, Leo Burris, husband, Bryan Burris in 1978, and son, Leroy Burris in 1996. Bessie is survived by four nieces, all of the Dallas area; 30 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, 38 great-great-grandchildren, and many other family members. JANE SPITZ HARRIS HOUSTON Jane Spitz Harris, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed on June 13, 2001, in Houston. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Max Spitz and Theresa Spitz, formerly of San Angelo and Corpus Christi. Mrs. Harris recently retired from 25 years of service with the Corpus Christi Public Library. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Samson Harris. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Oshman of Houston; son, Jim Harris of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughters, Lauren Oshman and Jennie Oshman; brother, Don Spitz and wife, Suzi, of Cleveland, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Marion Fenster and husband, Samuel, of New York City; and Evelyn Rosner of Cleveland and her husband, Dr. Robert Rosner (deceased). RUBY LEE HULSEY Ruby Lee Hulsey, 94, of San Angelo died at 6:28 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in a local hospital. She was born Aug. 8, 1906, in Miles. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Church of Christ. She was married to George Hulsey for 48 years until his death on June 15, 1972. She married George on Sept. 28, 1924, in Winters. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Charles A. and Betheny Ford. She was a piano and organ music teacher. She was a longtime volunteer to older folks homes, Park Plaza, Colonial, Rabbs, Downtown Center, food distribution and was awarded many plaques for outstanding volunteer work. Her thoughts were always to help and love other people and that love was returned to her. She was preceded in death by one son, Little George; a sister, Mrs. Jeff (Vada) Armour on May 3, 1987; two brothers, Earon Ford on May 10, 1988, and Wade Ford on Aug. 19, 1994. Mrs. Hulsey is survived by two sisters-in-law, Pauline Ford and Zula Ford, both of San Angelo, and many nieces and nephews. JOE HAMPTON KEMP Joe Hampton Kemp was born June 13, 1917, in Kingsville, Texas. He died at his home Wednesday morning, June 20, 2001. Burial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, in Oakwood Cemetery in Waco. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at St. Paul Presbyterian Church in San Angelo. Joes parents were Joseph Israel and Pearle Hampton Kemp. When he was 2 years old, the family moved to Comanche County, where he received his elementary education in the De Leon public schools. As a boy he liked to go fishing with his friends in the Leon River. During the Depression the family moved to Santa Rita, N.M. There he joined the Boy Scouts and enjoyed many camping trips and other activities. Joe was an excellent tennis player. The family moved to Houston, where Joe worked for a seismograph crew several years until World War II began. He volunteered for the Army Engineers and was at Pearl Harbor at the time of the bombing. He received his officers training at Fort Belvoir, Va., and his paratrooper training at Fort Benning, Ga. He was with the Army Engineers who jumped on Corregidor to retake it. He was wounded on Negros Island in the Philippines. There Joe received shrapnel wounds in both feet and legs. He was awarded many medals, including the Purple Heart. When the war was over, he returned home and married Eleanor Hazelton of Elmira, N.Y. Their children are Frances Whipple and husband, John, of Portland, Maine, and Kerry Kemp and wife, Cindy, of Tucson, Ariz. Joe enrolled in Texas A&M University and earned a degree in geological and petroleum engineering. He worked for EBASCO in several places in the United States, Canada and Mexico. His favorite sport during those years was golf. In 1964, Joe married Helen Hall Himel of Las Vegas, Nevada. Their children are Dian Kieffer and husband, Fred, of San Diego, Calif., William Himel and wife, Judy of Las Vegas and Denise Johnson and husband, Allen, of Monroe, La. Joe and Helen have 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He has four sisters, Amber Wiley of San Angelo, Fannie Kemp, his twin, of San Angelo, Jocelyn Higgins of Houston and Ola Mae Martin and husband, Tom, of San Angelo. Joe also has one niece, Ann Higgins of Houston and one nephew, Jake Robert Higgins of San Francisco. Joe loved his family, his friends and his church, St. Paul Presbyterian. ILAMAY CINDY LUCE Ilamay Cindy Luce, 87, of San Angelo died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in San Angelo Community Medical Center. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at First Presbyterian Church with Nelson Erwin officiating. Interment will follow in Belvedere Memorial Park. Johnsons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Cindy was born June 29, 1913, in Eastland, Texas, to John W. and Nettie A. Snider. She attended grade school in Carlsbad and graduated high school from Water Valley. She married Floyd Luce on Dec. 8, 1934, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death. Cindy and her husband managed Sherwood Bowling Lanes from 1957 until 1989. She was a volunteer at St. Johns Hospital information desk. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and attended regularly as long as her health permitted. Cindy loved sports and was an avid bowler. She helped organize the San Angelo Bowling Association. She served on the board of the WIBC. She was an officer for the National Womans Bowling Congress, was a state director for the Texas State Womans Bowllng Association and has been enshrined into the San Angelo Bowling Association. For years Cindy taught Angelo State University Students and San Angelo Independent School District students bowling classes at Sherwood Lanes. She made many friends while bowling in tournaments in Texas and the United States. Cindy played basketball at Water Valley. She scored more than 100 points in one game. She also took up flying. In the mid-1940s she received her pilots license. At one air show Cindy won the short take-off contest as the only woman participant. At the same show she and her sister won the flour bombing contest. Cindy received her black belt in Taekwondo karate at the age of 69. She also was preceded in death by brothers, Bill and Buck Snider; and sister, Merle Brown. Her survivors include one son, John N. Luce and his wife, Janet, of San Angelo; one sister, Mrs. Ora Lee Bolin of Midland; special niece, Helen Fickling Halfmann of San Angelo; grandchildren, Terri Lynne Curtis, Jonathan Paul Luce and Holly Walraven; and great-grandchildren, Michael Curtis, Taylor Curtis and Dakota Walraven, all of San Angelo; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Mary Lou was born Sept. 3, 1910, in Water Valley to Harve and Luella Nelson Earnest. She was a historian/rancher and had been a resident of Water Valley all of her life. Mary Lou was a member of the Water Valley United Methodist Church, the Tom Green County Historical Society, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Water Valley School Hall of Fame. Mary Lou was married to Walter Leslie McBride on Feb. 26, 1949, in Water Valley. He preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1986. MARY MALONE TEMPLE Mary Malone died at home in Temple, Texas, on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, surrounded by the love and care of the extended family that called her May. Mary was born in Pueblo, Colo., to Paul and Ruth McCoy. Mary married Tom Malone on July 25, 1942, and their union lasted until her death. Mary was a homemaker, bank teller and census taker, but her greatest joy in life came through her husband and her three daughters, Patricia Massey of Temple, Margaret (Peggy) Kukankos of Arlington Heights, Ill., and Penny Ward of Temple. Each daughter married and presented Mary with three grandchildren each six granddaughters and three grandsons. Mary rejoiced in the birth of her first great-grandchild in 1999. In addition to those family members, Mary is survived by her brother, Paul McCoy and her sister, Margaret Baston, both of Fort Collins, Colo., and their families. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at First Presbyterian Church with Nelson Erwin officiating. Interment will follow in Belvedere Memorial Park. Johnsons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Cindy was born June 29, 1913, in Eastland, Texas, to John W. and Nettie A. Snider. She attended grade school in Carlsbad and graduated high school from Water Valley. She married Floyd Luce on Dec. 8, 1934, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death. Cindy and her husband managed Sherwood Bowling Lanes from 1957 until 1989. She was a volunteer at St. Johns Hospital information desk. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and attended regularly as long as her health permitted. Cindy loved sports and was an avid bowler. She helped organize the San Angelo Bowling Association. She served on the board of the WIBC. She was an officer for the National Womans Bowling Congress, was a state director for the Texas State Womans Bowling Association and has been enshrined into the San Angelo Bowling Association Hall of Fame. For years Cindy taught Angelo State University students and San Angelo Independent School District students bowling classes at Sherwood Lanes. She made many friends while bowling in tournaments in Texas and the United States. Cindy played basketball at Water Valley. She scored more than 100 points in one game. She also took up flying. In the mid-1940s she received her pilots license. At one air show Cindy won the short take-off contest as the only woman participant. At the same show she and her sister won the flour bombing contest. Cindy received her black belt in Taekwondo karate at the age of 69. She also was preceded in death by brothers, Bill and Buck Snider; and sister, Merle Brown. Her survivors include one son, John N. Luce and his wife, Janet, of San Angelo; one sister, Mrs. Ora Lee Bolin of Midland; special niece, Helen Fickling Halfmann of San Angelo; grandchildren, Terri Lynne Curtis, Jonathan Paul Luce and Holly Walraven; and great-grandchildren, Michael Curtis, Taylor Curtis and Dakota Walraven, all of San Angelo; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will be receiving visitors at 2701 Yale Street. RUBY LEE HULSEY Ruby Lee Hulsey, 94, of San Angelo died at 6:28 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in a local hospital. She was born Aug. 8, 1906, in Miles. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Church of Christ. She was married to George Hulsey on Sept. 28, 1924, in Winters. They were married 48 years until his death June 15, 1972. She was a piano and organ music teacher. She was a longtime volunteer to older folks homes, Park Plaza, Colonial, Rabbs, Downtown Center and food distribution. She was awarded many plaques for outstanding volunteer work. Her thoughts were always to help and love other people and that love was returned to her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles A. and Bethany Ford, and one son, Little George. BILLY ROBERT HEXT ODESSA Billy Robert Hext, 61, of Odessa came into this world on Aug. 25, 1939, in Pampa to John Cecil and Mildred McPherson Hext and went home to be with his Lord on June 20, 2001. While we miss him greatly, we rejoice in the assurance that he is now with Jesus in his heavenly home. His love for Odessa began at age 10. After graduating from Odessa High School in 1957, he served in the Marine Reserves for 8 years. Bill married Melanie Jane Murrell of Odessa, his wife of 42 years, on Feb. 3, 1959. Bills career was spent in the oil industry. After serving several years as the president of Woolley Tool and its parent company Chromalloy, Bill left to co-found PEP, Inc. with longtime friend and partner, B.D. Berryhill of Odessa. From 1981 to 1997 Bill managed a thriving business throughout the ups and downs of the oil industry. In 1997, Bill and B.D. sold PEP, Inc. to National Oilwell Corp. Bill and Jane established the Hext Family Foundation and Heritage Family Limited Partnership in June 1998. The foundations purpose is to advance cancer research, promote vocational education and support Christian charities. The foundation serves as a perpetual example of the generous spirit of Bill Hext. Bills new business ventures include Positive Impact Waste Solutions, Legacy Golf Corp., Heritage Properties and Vista Residential Development Corp. In 1998, Bill continued to serve the community he loved as a city councilman from district 2. Two years later, Bill was elected mayor of Odessa. Bill loved representing the people of Odessa and did so with great humor, love and compassion. His visionary leadership and his efforts to unify Odessa and Midland are highlights of his political legacy. To all of his endeavors Bill brought his faith. He was a member and served as an elder of Grace Christian Fellowship. He proudly told of his relationship with Christ and how it shaped his life and family. Mrs. Henderson was born Jan. 17, 1917, in Winters to Nugent C. and Bessie Hinds. She married Travis William Moreland on Dec. 26, 1936, in Ballinger. They lived most of their married life in Odessa. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Henderson married Robert S. Henderson on Dec. 31, 1963, in San Angelo. He preceded her in death in 1985. Mrs. Henderson graduated from Odessa College as a licensed vocational nurse and practiced at Shannon Hospital and Park Plaza Nursing Home in San Angelo until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of the YMCA Rocker-ettes, a seniors line dancing group, and was a founding member of the Friendship Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star 1008. JOE HAMPTON KEMP Joe Hampton Kemp was born June 13, 1917, in Kingsville, Texas. He died at his home Wednesday morning, June 20, 2001. Burial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 26, in Oakwood Cemetery in Waco. The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at St. Paul Presbyterian Church in San Angelo. The Rev. Dr. Louie Andrews and the Rev. Dr. Craig Meyers will officiate. Joes parents were Joseph Israel and Pearle Hampton Kemp. When he was 2 years old, the family moved to Comanche County, where he received his elementary education in the De Leon public schools. As a boy he liked to go fishing with his friends in the Leon River. During the Depression the family moved to Santa Rita, N.M. There he joined the Boy Scouts and enjoyed many camping trips and other activities. Joe was an excellent tennis player. The family moved to Houston, where Joe worked for a seismograph crew several years until World War II began. He volunteered for the Army Engineers and was at Pearl Harbor at the time of the bombing. He received his officers training at Fort Belvoir, Va., and his paratrooper training at Fort Benning, Ga. He was with the Army Engineers who jumped on Corregidor to retake it. He was wounded on Negros Island in the Philippines. There, Joe received shrapnel wounds in both feet and legs. He was awarded many medals, including the Purple Heart. When the war was over, he returned home and married Eleanor Hazelton of Elmira, N.Y. Their children are Frances Whipple and husband, John, of Portland, Maine, and Kerry Kemp and wife, Cindy, of Tucson, Ariz. Joe enrolled in Texas A&M University and earned a degree in geological and petroleum engineering. He worked for EBASCO in several places in the United States, Canada and Mexico. His favorite sport during those years was golf. In 1964, Joe married Helen Hall Himel of Las Vegas, Nevada. Their children are Dian Kieffer and husband, Fred, of San Diego, Calif., William Himel and wife, Judy of Las Vegas and Denise Johnson and husband, Allen, of Monroe, La. Joe and Helen have 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He has four sisters, Amber Wiley of San Angelo, Fannie Kemp, his twin, of San Angelo, Jocelyn Higgins of Houston and Ola Mae Martin and husband, Tom, of San Angelo. He grew up on a farm between Weatherford, Okla., and Hydro. He went to business college in Oklahoma City and owned a business there. He came to Fort Stockton in 1942 while in the Army. While in Fort Stockton, he was the deputy tax assessor for Pecos County from 1946-1948 and was the first business manager/tax assessor for the Fort Stockton Independent School District from 1948-1975. He was the county tax assessor/collector from 1975 until his retirement in 1995. He was married to Ruth Lannom on May 3, 1945, until she preceded him in death in 1979. He remarried on Nov. 4, 1989, to Geraldine Garner. Trip was always involved and active in the community and county affairs. He was past master of the Fort Stockton Lodge, past president of the Noon Lions Club in Fort Stockton, director of the Lions Club Crippled Childrens Camp in Kerrville, district governor of the West District of Lions Club and was named as Outstanding Citizen of Fort Stockton and Outstanding Lion of the Year. Trip also was inducted into the Lions Club Hall of Fame. He was honored as tax assessor/collector of the year. He was involved with the Salvation Army and Boy Scouts for numerous years. His other honors and accomplishments are too numerous to mention but he touched many lives with his generosity and giving spirit. Banks went to be with the Lord on June 23, 2001, in Riverside Nursing Home. Mrs. Banks was born in Athens, Ga., on Oct. 4, 1916, to Duke and Mary Jones. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; brother, William Jones; and husband, S.T. Banks. She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Thomas Banks and daughter-in-law, Dorothy Banks of San Angelo; grandson, Tommy Banks and wife, Shelia, of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughters, Sherry Coutain and husband, T.J., of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Alesa Dawson and husband, Charles, of Montgomery, Ala., and Tina Banks-Gray of San Angelo. Minnie also leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one grandson in Christ, Stephen Flowers of Dallas. Minnie was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved caring for people. She worked as a home health care provider for several years. Her love for the Lord started at an early age. She united with Hill Chapel Baptist Church in Athens and was a devoted member for more than 60 years. She served on the Mission Society, Mothers Board and Matrons Circle. After her health started to fail, Minnie relocated to San Angelo and resided here for eight years where she was surrounded by numerous people who loved and cared for her. The family moved to Munday, Texas, when Haymes was at the age of 2, then later moved to Levelland, Texas, when he was 12. Haymes moved to San Angelo in 1936 and went to work for M.L. Leddy making boots. Mr. Wyatt joined the Army in early 1941, serving five years in the 2nd Armored Division during World War II. Haymes came home to San Angelo Dec. 9, 1945, and in 1946 started into the real estate business. In 1951, Haymes went into the building business and later in 1956 also went into the finance business, retiring in 1977. Mr. Wyatt married Lillian Clare Parrott in January 1949. She preceded him in death Sept. 30, 1975. He later married Mary Beth Powell on June 4, 1976. Haymes was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1937 and a Mason member since 1947. Mr. Wyatt was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Wyatt; and a sister, Allene Cook. HELEN CROCKER DWIGANS EL PASO June 19, 2001, Helen Crocker Dwigans, formerly of Fort Hancock, Texas, left this life peacefully at home, near Cave Creek, Ariz., having resided there 12 years. Her one hundred and one-half year journey touching three centuries was with strong spiritual conviction and love for humanity. She was born to Christian parents, Olive May Lory and John William Maddux on Nov. 11, 1899, at Mt. Summit, Hamilton County (Anderson township), Ohio. Her mother descended from John Markley, founder of Markley family in Anderson Township, arriving about 1814 from Pennsylvania. One Markley cabin still stands with historic marker. Her father was descended from Thomas Maddux, whose arrival in Anderson Township from Maryland was between 1810-1820. As Helen Elizabeth Maddux, she attended Cincinnatis Winton Place School, Woodward High School and graduated from Mueller Business College in 1917. Her employment began at Procter & Gambles Cincinnati office. She studied evenings at Cincinnatis Academy of Music from 1916 to 1919. She sang as a soloist at two radio stations, including WLW Cincinnati. After marriage to R.L. Crocker, she worked at Detroit, Michigans sub-department of labor, U.S. Immigration until joining the Crocker family in Jasper, Ala. In Jasper, she worked for Judge Lacy and Rep. John Bankhead. In 1922, her mother-in-laws health brought the family to Texas. The Crockers opened the first potato chip factory on Main Street in San Angelo. Helen Maddox Crocker became private secretary to the colorful Judge W.A. Wright. Nineteen years later, upon his retirement, she opened her public stenographic office. She had become a single parent of three daughters (one foster) and a niece. She was an officer and member of Texas Federation of Business & Professional Women. During World War II years she became an FBI junior investigator, helped establish and was a member of the local USO, promoted and campaigned for womens place in the war. Devoted to music, she was a contralto soloist for the Vesper Oratorio Choir for the Episcopal Church, soloist and director of the First USA Presbyterian Church choir and contralto lead in the San Angelo Civic Opera and Philharmonic Chorus. She was well-known for the contralto quality of her voice and skill in the interpretation of old classics, romances and operatic selections. Helen closed her office in 1946. As Mrs. A.W. Dwigans, she left Texas to homestead in Alaska. After spending the winter months in Burwash Landing, Yukon Territory, Canada, she returned with her husband to farm at Fort Hancock, Texas, from 1947 to 1989. She was a farm wife, did bookkeeping and accounting and prepared income tax for the public. She stayed active with music and directed the choir at Fort Hancock Methodist Church. She was a member of the Texas Order of the Eastern Star, ran for Hudspeth County judge in 1952 and became deputy county clerk at Sierra Blanca, Texas, in 1956. She was widowed in 1983 and moved to Arizona with her daughters family in 1989. Immediate family preceding her in death were Robert Lacy Crocker of Jasper, Ala., husband 12 years; A.W. Bert Dwigans of Fort Hancock, husband 37 years; daughter, Marion Crocker Vandergrift Mason of Sweetwater; foster daughter, Amber Preston ONeal of Lubbock; and three siblings, Mrs. Olive May Andrews and Milton R. and John W. Maddox of Cincinnati. They managed the Deep Well Ranch in Fort Stockton for 20 years before moving to San Angelo in 1973. Mrs. Erwin was preceded in death by her husband and son, Tom Erwin. Survivors include one brother, Eli King of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews. PATRICIA THOMPSON Patricia Thompson was born July 2, 1950, in Big Lake to Grace Carter and George Thompson III, both of whom preceded her in death. She integrated into the Reagan County School system in 1964 from Davenport High School (Big Lake). After graduation in 1968 she attended Angelo State University until she began her family in 1970. She had three children; Thomas Carl T.C., Robert and Alicia Chelle. She confessed her faith in Christ with her children and worshipped at IME under the leadership of the Reverend Dotson. She later converted to the Baptist faith in 1976 and began attending Bethlehem Baptist Church under the direction of the Rev. H.S. Smith, where she served faithfully the remainder of her life. She served on the mission board, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and in many other auxiliaries. Patricia Ann Thompson made her life a testimony to all. Yelling at all the games, giving advice to others and leaving her home open to anyone wanting to stop by was important to her. He was a member of Lorena Lodge No. 594, York Rite and Scottish Rite Bodies and Karem Shrine Temple. His greatest achievement was his wife and children. He encouraged Tammi and Eric to always follow their dreams and made it possible for them to do so. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The Whites came to McCulloch County from Llano County in 1908. After graduating from Pear Valley High school in 1927, Leta attended a business college in Abilene. Upon completion of her schooling, she married Wade Casey on Dec. 30, 1928. They returned to McCulloch County and lived in Pear Valley from 1932 to 1950. The Caseys moved to Amarillo where Leta worked as a bookkeeper/auditor for a department store while Mr. Casey was a real estate broker. Upon retirement, the Caseys returned to Brady in 1968. Mr. Casey passed away in 1972. Leta became very involved in volunteer work throughout the city, county and state. Leta was a board member of the McCulloch County Extension Homemakers Association, Twentieth Century Club, Family Living Committee, the Eastern Star (with which she received a fifty year pin), American Association of Retired People, the hospital auxiliary, Voca Quilting Club, McCulloch County Program Building Committee, Relay For Life, State Family Life and Resource Management Committee, Lohn Valley Improvement Association, East Sweden Community Development Association, Farm Bureau, Concho Valley Council of Governments, Sunset Center Advisory Board, Hillbilly Hits Fan Club, Heart of Texas Country Music Museum and the American Cancer Society. Leta was given many awards including McCulloch County Woman of the Year in 1990. She was also recognized with the Distinguished Service Award from the Brady/McCulloch County Chamber of commerce in 1995. She also was presented the B.R. (Bert) Turner Humanitarian Award in 2000. Leta traveled all over the world visiting Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Egypt, Jerusalem, Scotland, Amsterdam, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, Greek Islands and several other foreign countries. Leta was a lifelong Methodist and attended the First United Methodist Church in Brady. Leddy making boots. Mr. Wyatt joined the Army in early 1941, serving five years in the 2nd Armored Division during World War II. Haymes came home to San Angelo Dec. 9, 1945, and in 1946 started into the real estate business. In 1951, Haymes went into the building business and later in 1956 also went into the finance business, retiring in 1977. Mr. Wyatt married Lillian Clare Parrott in January 1949. She preceded him in death Sept. 30, 1975. He later married Mary Beth Powell on June 4, 1976. Haymes was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1937 and a Mason member since 1947. Mr. Wyatt was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Wyatt; and a sister, Allene Cook. She was also recognized with the Distinguished Service Award from the Brady/McCulloch County Chamber of Commerce in 1995. She also was presented the B.R. (Bert) Turner Humanitarian Award in 2000. Leta traveled all over the world visiting Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Egypt, Jerusalem, Scotland, Amsterdam, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, Greek Islands and several other foreign countries. Leta was a lifelong Methodist and attended the First United Methodist Church in Brady. Surviving cousins include Loree Pimm of Brady and Floy Otte of Lampasas; two nieces, Rilla Roots of Corpus Christi and Susan Riley of Buda; a sister-in-law, Jo White of Brady; her best friends, Hazel Maner and Tracy Pitcox; and her caretaker, Faye Collins. Her parents, two brothers and her husband preceded her in death. Service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 29, at First United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 28, at Heritage Funeral Home. Services are under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home. FIELDS AUSTIN Fred Fields passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the age of 60. He was born July 3, 1940, in San Angelo. His parents, Justine Weatherby and William John Fields preceded him in death. Fred spent his youth in Sonora and achieved accomplishments such as Eagle Scout. He was from a family of pioneer ranchers that was recognized by the state of Texas as a member of the Family Land Heritage Program of Texas. He attended the University of Texas and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Fred was a certified public accountant and rancher for many years. He was active with Austins Aqua Festival, The Faulkner Center and St. Davids Episcopal Church. Fred was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He is survived by daughters, Michelle Fields Hutcheson and husband, Mike, and Millicent Fields Hamann and husband, Maurice (Mo); grandchildren, Merrill Shea Melanson, Fredric Madden Hutcheson and Micah Kay Hutcheson; and sister, Francine Hardeman of Sonora. BRYAN GILLIAM JUNCTION Bryan Gilliam, 81, of Junction passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2001, in a Kerrville hospital. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 29, at First Baptist Church in Junction with burial to follow in Junction Cemetery. The Rev. Morris Cook and the Rev. Sam Coffey will officiate. Arrangements are by Aubrey Fife Funerals. Bryan was born on Sept. 27, 1919, in Deaf Smith County to John and Mary Gilliam. He attended school in Ballinger. Bryan was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Navy and spent time in the Philippines and in Guadalcanal as a member of a Navy Seabees construction battalion. He married LaWanda Hamilton of Abilene on Sept. 5, 1947. He owned an automobile parts and repair business in Junction. Bryan was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Junction where he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon for many years. Survivors include his wife, LaWanda Gilliam of Junction; two sons, Gary Gilliam and wife, Debby, of Midland, and Tim Gilliam and wife, Phyllis, of Crosby; one daughter, Jill Batchelor of Wichita Falls; and one sister, Bessie Pauline Simmons of San Antonio. Survivors also include seven grandchildren, Jeremy, Ashley and Collin Gilliam of Midland; Julie and Josh Gilliam of Crosby; and Brett and Brad Batchelor of Wichita Falls.
