He was born June 14, 1921, in Elkhart, Ind., to Edward Roof Ellis and Fannie Mae Cooper Ellis. Eds life was an example for all that knew him. At a time when the characteristics of faithfulness, loyalty and perseverance appear outdated, Ed personified these admirable qualities in his love of family, his community service and dedication to his life work. On June 15, 1941, Ed married Sue McCarty, the love of his life. Eds father did not want him to marry until he was 21, but Ed and Sue were married the day after Eds 20th birthday. This lifelong relationship produced the joy of Eds life, his family. Ed and Sue were blessed with three daughters. Their example of profound commitment and faithfulness to each other has now influenced three generations. Ed fulfilled the responsibility to his community with the same dedication he showed to his family. He has been a member of the First United Methodist Church of San Angelo since 1962 and active in the Friendship Bible Class. Ed was a 50-year member of the Masonic Blue Lodge and served as a 33rd degree Mason. Additionally, he was a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club and was elected to serve as an early president of the General Telephone Federal Credit Union. Ed followed his parents footsteps working in the telephone industry. Beginning at age 14, he spent Saturdays digging post holes for the Indiana Associated Telephone Company. Ed worked in the telecommunications industry all his life, even in service to his country, joining the U.S. Army Signal Corp. in 1943. He worked in telephone system design for the National Scientific Laboratories in Washington, D.C., and at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. In this capacity, he traveled on assignments to Saudi Arabia, Morocco, the Azores, Alaska and Greenland. Wanting to spend more time with his family, he began working for General Telephone Company in 1952 and moved to San Angelo in 1953. After a long and rewarding career, Ed retired as general engineering and construction manager in 1979. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Sue Ellis; three daughters, Rebecca Sue Gambs and husband, John, of Red Oak, Iowa, Carol Anne Stokes and husband, Roy, of Von Ormy, Texas, and Nancy Ellis Wagner and husband, Terry, of Austin; four grandchildren, Brandi Taylor and husband, Randall, of Houston, Cody Young and wife, Melissa, of San Antonio, Deborah Gambs of New York City and Denise Gambs of Los Angeles; and three great-grandchildren, Emma Ellis Taylor and Spencer Randall Taylor, both of Houston, and Ian Noah Young of Estaponia, Spain. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Big Lake. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7, in Bull Shoals. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 9, in Glen Rest Cemetery in Big Lake. Mrs. Milam was born one of eight children on Feb. 12, 1912, to parents William Ernest Gregory and Icy Modenia Larimore Gregory in Richart, Okla. She married Andrew Jackson A.J. Milam on Aug. 7, 1924, in Mena, Ark. Mr. Milam was a descendant of Texas Revolutionary War hero, Ben Milam. A.J. and Virgie had five children together and they raised her youngest sister, Bernice, from age 3 as their own child when her mother died. Mrs. Milam was a pioneer who was camp cook for the railroad from Arkansas to Texas. She would not be separated from her husband who was with the railroad and the only way she could be with him was to cook for the hundreds of men that built the rails. To say she was strong stock would be a mild statement. An accident on the railroad broke her leg, but men had to be fed or she would be sent home. With her leg in splints she had the doctor brace her leg to the seat bend of a chair so that she could continue to walk and cook without pressure from the knee down. And cook she did, there was not a biscuit or cornbread around that could match hers, and we have been told the best cherry pie and peach cobbler was a Virgie Milam treat. Mrs. Milam was pretty handy with a needle and thread as well. Lots of men folk had to leave their wives behind and the hard labor took its toll on their clothing. Mrs. Milam was said to have the fastest stitch in the west. As she put it one time she had to be fast, the railroad didnt wait and you couldnt have grown men running around showing half of what they had, it just wasnt a pretty sight. She embraced life and the hardships of the 1920s as gifts and lessons. Her formal education had to end when she finished the third grade but she never let it slow her down. She taught herself to read, write and arithmetic. When she and her husband started farming she could keep ledgers, weigh cotton and pay farm hands with such keen accuracy that job foremen were quick to put her in charge. Throughout her life Mrs. Milam became well known for her craftwork and especially her beautiful handmade quilts, lap quilts, pillows, cup towels and lace work. It gave her great joy to make handmade lap quilts and give them to folks in the rest home in Big Lake and to everyone else. Her family she kept together like little chicks and shared her knowledge and talents with such joy. The children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren (who called her Great-Grapes) loved to gather at her house for good food, card games, dominoes, fellowship and unconditional love. Mrs. Milam was preceded in death by her husband A.J., her daughters, Wanda Boulden Collins, Jackie Achenbach and Bernice Collins, a son, Ronny Milam, grandson, Robin Kessler and a great-grandson, Kenneth Krause; also her sons-in-law, Shorty Boulden, Buddy Collins and Ronny Achenbach. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Nancy Milam of Corsicana, daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Gene McBee of Bull Shoals, Ark., one sister, Gladys Hill of Monticillo, Ark.; grandchildren, Bill and Sandra Boulden of Artesia, N.M., Charlotte and John Farmer, Loretta and Terry Erwin of San Angelo, Penny and Charlie McKissick of Bull Shoals, John Achenbach of Wichita, Kan., Pam and Alan Kruse of Austin, Jeff and Karen Milam of Dallas, Lauri and Darrell Robinson of Flint, Brent Milam of Houston, Ronny Milam of Lima, Ohio, David McBee of Indiana, Josh, Wade and Savannah McBee of Bull Shoals; great-grandchildren, Lauren Milam of Dallas, Craig Boulden of Albuquerque, N.M., Chad and Dr. Kelli Boulden of Deming, N.M., Don and Valarie Sharp of Roswell, N.M., Becky and Jay Dyches and Brad Hicks, all of San Angelo, Kyle Hicks of Phoenix, Ariz., David and Tamara Moore of Victoria, Jarrett Erwin of Houston, Kamron Kessler of Ketchakan, Alaska, Kalina Kessler of Bull Shoals, and Zachary McBee of Sweetwater; great-great-grandchildren, Kayla, Ashley and Coby Dyches of San Angelo, Starzy Hillard, Jonathan and Aaron Sharp of Roswell, N.M., Rebecca and Tanner Moore of Victoria and Jordan Kessler of Bull Shoals. GENE WILLIAMS OZONA Gene Williams, 83, of Ozona died Wednesday, July 4, 2001, in Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 6, at Ozona United Methodist with the Rev. Nancy Mossman officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery with arrangements by Preddy Funeral Home. He was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Ozona, the second son of Charles Larton and Bertie Fussell Williams. As a youth his natural affinity to Model T Fords gave him wheels when most teen-agers had none. When he graduated from Ozona High School in 1936 he went west to Los Angeles, Calif., to attend Hemphill Diesel School. He returned to Ozona to mechanic but by 1940 he joined two brothers, Charles Williams and Jack Williams, in a ranching Venture in Terrell County. Being the son of a pioneer Crockett County rancher who died in 1924, inherent qualities of loving the land and the out-of-doors set the pace for the rest of his life. But Hitler was setting the stage for World War II and Japan was plotting to change the world. In January 1942 he was the first of five brothers to be inducted into the U.S. armed forces. With Co. L-38 Infantry he served more than two years in the Aleutians. Later, men from his company were sent over the U.S. as training cadre. Upon discharge in October 1945, he returned to Ozona to start anew in the ranching business. May 11, 1946, Williams entered into a contract which would carry him through more than 55 years of fulfillment. A garden wedding at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith of Ozona joined Gene and Mary Alyce Toots Smith in marriage. To make the family complete Esther Alyce was born Jan. 15, 1949, and Gene Jr. Sooner on March 21, 1952. Through the years he served his hometown in many ways. He spent 17 years with the volunteers of the fire department and also served as president and assistant fire chief. He served as president of the Lions Club. He was an active member of the Crockett County Water Board for many years. He served Crockett County as constable for 36 years. He was a charter member of the Ozona Country Club and became and avid golfer. He collected Indian artifacts and joined the Texas Archaeological Society. And, always beckoning were fishing trips to the Pecos and Devils Rivers. Williams was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and his wife, Jack and Winnie Williams; a brother, Charles L. Williams; a brother, Joe D. Williams, all of Ozona. For many years he enjoyed a happy relationship with his wifes sister Tommy Smith Chandler and her husband, Earle Chandler.
