ARCH LEWIS JR. W. Arch Lewis Jr. died in San Angelo at Shannon Hospital on Monday, July 9, 2001, from complications of a stroke. He was 80 years old. Arch was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Brownwood. He left Brownwood at the age of 5 when his parents Mattie E. Baugh and William Arch Lewis moved to San Angelo where his father started a grocery business. Arch graduated from San Angelo Central High School at the age of 16 and received his college degree in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University in the spring of 1942. Upon graduation, he married Marjorie Brown. They had met in high school in San Angelo and courted during their college years. After a June 5 wedding, the newlyweds moved to Schenectady, N.Y., where Arch worked for General Electric during World War II. One of the projects he was involved with was the development of sonar for use in submarines. In 1946, Archs father asked him to consider returning to San Angelo to help run the family grocery business. It was then that Arch joined his father and his cousin, Dick Henson, as partner in the M System Food Stores. Later, his younger brother, Baugh Lewis, also joined the business as did his sister, Nancy Lewis Smith. All his life, Arch maintained an interest in activities, which were at least partially related to his love of engineering. In his first years back in Texas, he built his own ham radio, which kept him in contact with his friends in other states. After his retirement from M System, he spent many hours sailing on the area lakes and also learning to pilot an airplane. He enjoyed sailing in regattas as well as attending fly-ins around the country. Shortly after his retirement he began a long-term project of building his own airplane, which he completed and flew several years later. He made and flew his own kites as well. An additional hobby was collecting old record albums of music from the 1930s and 40s. He would make and edit tapes to be given to friends and to be played at parties and dances he attended with his wife, Marjorie. They shared a circle of very dear friends made over the many years they lived in San Angelo. Arch was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie and Arch Lewis, and his wife of 53 years, Marjorie Elizabeth Brown Lewis. He is survived by his two daughters, Merriet Lewis of Dallas and Laura Morgan and husband, James Morgan, of Georgetown; and a granddaughter, Emily Morgan. He also is survived by his sister and her family, Nancy and Lester Smith and their daughters, Windy Smith and Leslie Smith; and a brother and his family, Baugh and Helen Lewis and their sons, Russell Lewis and Mark Lewis and their families; as well as two sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Scherz and Joyce Jarmon and their families. The family wishes to thank the Shannon Hospital staff, especially the skilled nursing staff of the 6th floor who exhibited great kindness and compassion for Arch and his family. Arch requested there be no formal services conducted for him, but there will be an informal graveside service in Fairmount Cemetery at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, with an informal gathering at his home afterward for friends and family. The service will be conducted by Mr. Nelson Erwin lay pastor of First Presbyterian Church in San Angelo. The family has requested there be no flowers. A remembrance to a favorite charity in his memory would be appreciated. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. JOHN B. LUNA John B. He is survived by his two daughters, Merriet Lewis of Dallas and Laura Morgan and her husband, James Morgan, of Georgetown; and a granddaughter, Emily Morgan. Nelson Erwin, lay pastor of First Presbyterian Church in San Angelo. The family has requested there be no flowers. A remembrance to a favorite charity in his memory would be appreciated. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. ZACK O. GLASS Zack O. Glass, 50, of 9704 Walnutwood Way, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Baptist Hospital East. He was a native of Allensville, a service representative for Insight Communications, a former mortician for Southern Funeral Home in Memphis, Tenn., and for Starks Funeral Home in San Angelo. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity and First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown. He leaves behind a wife, Christine; daughters, Zandra, Ella and Holly; a son, Jarvis; his mother; two brothers; and a grandson. Graveside service will be Thursday, July 12. Arrangements are by Winston Funeral Home and E.H. Ford Mortuary in Memphis. MINNIE MARIE FRY ELLIOTT On July 9, at her residence, Minnie Elliott entered the presence of her Lord. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 12, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens with Pastor Chester McCown officiating. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Mrs. Elliott was born on the home place in Burnet County on April 30, 1913, to John Wesley and Effie May Pruitt Fry. Minnie was privileged to grow up in a pioneering-rich family that had been in the area since the early 1800s. Mrs. Elliott was part of a large family who worked hard on the land. Minnie completed her schooling through the Council Creek and Burnet school systems. Growing up with seven brothers, two sisters and numerous family meant a busy and happy homelife. At the age of 22, following a brief courtship, Minnie married Willie Isaiah Bill Elliott in October of 1933 in Burnet. Mrs. Elliott and her husband owned and operated a grocery store in Menard prior to moving to San Angelo in 1947. Minnie worked for St. Johns Hospital upon retirement in 1968. Momma worked hard to raise her six children and work outside the home. Minnie was raised and believed in her Church of Christ origins. She knew the Lord as her personal savior and looked forward to eternal life in heaven, reuniting with loved ones who had gone on before her. Mrs. Elliott was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Effie Mae Boatright; a granddaughter; brothers, Wesley, Andy, Jim, Les, Jess and Levi Fry; also her sisters, Nettie Fry Hawkins and Maggie Fry Marx. Surviving children include, Lewis Elliott and wife, Linda; Dorothy Hays and husband, Tim; Mary Steen and husband, Dean; Bill Elliott and wife, Carol; and Lorene Wetzel; all of the San Angelo area. Surviving brother is Pres Fry of Burnet County. Grannie left a legacy of 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. This lady, whom we all knew and loved, has left each family member with their own special memories. She enjoyed telling of days and times gone by that were in some way special to/for her. As a sister, mother and grandmother she will continue on in these treasured memories and in the love shes shared for each one of us. The family wishes to thank sincerely Dr. John Granaghan and Dr. John Ballard, as well as the staff of West Texas Medical Associates and San Angelo Community Medical Center for the excellent care and personal attention to Minnie over the past 30-plus years of her life. Let your heart not be troubled I go to prepare a place for you. John 14:1,2. JEANETTE HENDERSON WHEELER Jeanette Wheeler, 88, of San Angelo passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2001. ERNEST JOSEPH SOLAT STERLING CITY Ernest Joseph (EJ) (Ernie) Solat went to join his beloved wife Deasie and our Lord on July 9, 2001, at 10:05 p.m. At his side were his daughter, Mary Pinac, and grandchildren, Todd Sedwick and Liz Kluever as well as their spouses. Also present was his first great-grandchild, Hannah Elizabeth Sedwick, who will make her appearance in about six weeks. He is survived by his daughter, Mary, grandchildren, Tood and Liz, brothers, Charles Solat, Richard Solat and Edward Solat, all of New York. Ernie was born in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 6, 1917, but his family soon moved to Buffalo, N.Y., where he lived until he met and married Deasie Copeland in San Angelo where he was stationed for a period during World War II. After the war he and Deasie chose to permanently reside in San Angelo where their only daughter, Mary Louise, was born. They moved to Dallas to be closer to Mary and her family in 1996. Ernie worked for the U.S. Postal Service after the war in various positions and retired as a rural carrier in 1979 after many years of service. He was actively involved in sports throughout his life until a bout with prostate cancer sidelined him. He played hockey, football and softball, but baseball was his passion. While in Dallas he was involved in water aerobics, bingo, exercise classes and field trips. Ernie was very competitive on the ball field but his family and friends knew him to be the most gentle and loving of men to the very end. He will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him. Ernie was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease in 1989 and battled the disease amazingly well until the stroke on July 2, 2001, that took his life. One Last Trail By Justin Todd Paxton Well, his days are getting shorter, and his saddles getting cold. His trails are just about over, and his ponys getting old. But hes got his memories, and that helps him to hang on, To a way of life that used to be, but now is dead and gone. As he rolls his ol pony to the end of the hall, He stares out the window as the tears begin to fall. He dreams of a yesteryear, and days that since have past. And how he longs to rope a steer, and tie on hard and fast. He once was a hero, the best cowboy in the land. He once soared like an eagle, but now can hardly stand. As he rolls himself back to his bunk, he grabs his boots and spurs, And removes his hat one last time, to say a prayer to help the hurt. And like the way of life that used to be, but now is dead and gone, His prayers have now been answered, and he is finally movin on. And as he heads down this one last trail, a smile comes across his face, As he rides off into the sunset, to his final resting place.
