He was born on Feb. 18, 1926, in San Angelo to Mattie Baugh and William Arch Lewis Sr., the second of their three children. After graduation from high school he attended Texas A&M University majoring in engineering. After one year he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific on the Lauderdale as a radar operator during World War II. After the war he moved to Austin and attended The University of Texas, earning a business degree in 1949. Baugh was destined to be in the grocery business. His father, Arch Lewis, opened the first M System grocery store in June 1924 with $6,000 of borrowed money and a dream. The store was located at the corner of Harris and Chadbourne and occupied an area of 20x80 with a staff of two, including Arch Lewis. This initial investment started a chain which eventually grew to 22 stores mainly in West Texas. Baughs first job at M System was at age 12 when he worked stamping cigarettes after school for which he received 5 cents a case. By age 14 he had worked his way up to a summer job earning $5 a week doing everything from carrying groceries to sorting potatoes, but it left his afternoons free to indulge in his passion for fishing. Baugh was involved in all aspects of the family business, eventually becoming president of M System Food Stores, Inc. The stores were sold in 1993 after being in the Lewis family for 69 years with Baugh maintaining the real estate ownership and management. While managing an M System store in Abilene he met his future bride, Helen Hale. They had a beautiful church wedding in Dallas on Aug. 18, 1951, and began a lifelong commitment which would span half a century. In due time Helen and Baugh were blessed with two sons, Russell Morgan and Mark William. The family returned to San Angelo in the early 1950s to raise their family. Being a loving husband and father were Baughs top priorities but he also volunteered his time and energy to serve on the following boards: United Way, San Angelo Rotary, Board of City Development, Salvation Army, Food Market Institute, Texas Merchant Association, Bank of the West (now Bank of America) and he was also a deacon of the First Baptist Church. Baugh had a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing. Later in life he also became an avid runner and participated in many races including two White Rock Marathons in Dallas. Although few people in his age group were able to keep up his pace, he humbly referred to himself as a plodder. Some of his most vivid and pleasant memories were pursuing his hunting and fishing endeavors with either his sons or his equally passionate hunting buddies. He traveled to such exotic locales as Africa, Venezuela, the Arctic Circle, the Amazon and all over Texas and Colorado. Baugh was preceded in death by his parents, Mattie and W. Arch Lewis Sr., his brother, Arch Lewis Jr. and brother-in-law, Captain Terry Hale, who was killed in Vietnam. He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen; his son, Russell and wife, Margaret and grandchildren, Morgan and Mattie; his son, Mark and wife, Ruth, all of Austin; his sister, Nancy and husband, Lester Smith of San Angelo; four nieces, Merriet Lewis of Dallas, Laura and husband, James Morgan and daughter, Emily, of Georgetown, Windy Smith of San Angelo and Leslie Smith of San Antonio; mother-in-law, Mary F. Campbell of San Angelo (formerly of Dallas); brother-in-law, Dan Hale and wife, Dewi, of Dallas and nephews, Stephen Hale and Roger Hale of Dallas; brother-in-law, David Hale and wife, Mary, of Virginia, nephew, Daniel Hale and niece, Elizabeth Hale of Virginia; and niece, Sherry Jerome of Michigan (daughter of Captain Hale). A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at First Baptist Church. Please join the family following the memorial service for lunch and a time of remembrance in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a charity of ones choice. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Baughs wish was for his body to be cremated and returned to the land of his grandparents. The original Baugh Ranch was established in the 1860s, is located on the shores of Lake Brownwood, and holds special significance to the Lewis family. Our loving gratitude to the wonderful friends who provided their prayers and support and to the Angelo Health Care Service, Inc. and Hospice of San Angelo. Your love made it possible to survive this difficult time for our family. We sincerely thank you. Baughs sweet, gentle spirit and loving kindness is an inspiration to those of us who were privileged to have our lives touched by him. Thank you Baugh. 07/31/01 Funerals, Death Notices and Obituaries _________________________________________________________________ Funerals TODAY SAN ANGELO Russell Baugh Lewis, 75, memorial service at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church; arrangements by Johnsons Funeral Home. Baughs wish was for his body to be cremated and returned to the land of his grandparents. The original Baugh Ranch was established in the 1860s, is located on the shores of Lake Brownwood, and holds special significance to the Lewis family. Our loving gratitude to the wonderful friends who provided their prayers and support and to the Angelo Health Care Service Inc. and Hospice of San Angelo. Your love made it possible to survive this difficult time for our family. We sincerely thank you. Baughs sweet, gentle spirit and loving kindness is an inspiration to those of us who were privileged to have our lives touched by him. Thank you Baugh.
