Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9 at Johnsons Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10 at Southland Baptist Church with Bill Shiell, pastor of Southland Baptist Church, and Don Williams officiating. Lewis was born Jan. 19, 1928, in a small farming community seven miles south of Erwin, Tenn., to Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Runion. Lewis was the seventh of 10 children. He graduated from Unicoi County High School in 1945. Then he attended East Tennessee State one semester before joining the Naval Air Corps where he served two years. Upon discharge from the Navy, Lewis attended the University of Tennessee from which he attained his bachelors degree in geology. After working toward his masters degree, he moved to Texas in 1949 where he worked as a seismograph crew chief throughout West Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. In 1953 he married the love of his life, Betty Sams and moved to Brownfield, Texas. Later that year, Lewis began selling drilling bits and he and Betty were transferred to San Angelo where they stayed. Lewis started his own drill bit company in 1954 called Economy Bit Co. He was known to sell bits out of his garage and load his station wagon early in the morning to carry drill bits out to remote drilling locations. Lewis took pride in his business ventures including ranching, meat packing, real estate developments, Concho Valley Savings and Loan, residential construction, welding supply stores, and one auto parts store. He always had enough energy and desire to make a project work. Very rarely does a person come along who has used the time God gave him as efficiently and as productively as Lewis had during his time with us. Lewis loved his wife, Betty; his two sons, Mark and Tim; his daughter-in-law, Bridgett; and his two grandsons, Jonathan Ray Runion and Andrew Lewis Runion. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Runion; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Runion; two sisters, Pauline Moore and Millie Parsons; a brother, Jay Lee Runion; and a very special nephew, John Epley. Survivors include his wife, Betty; his son and daughter-in-law, Timothy Ray Runion and Bridgett Ann Runion and their two sons, Jonathan Ray Runion and Andrew Lewis Runion; three brothers, Tucker Runion, Charles (Tiny) Runion and Tommy Runion; three sisters, Virginia Lafferee, Mary Lou Rayburn and Jo Ann Lockhart; sister-in-law, Peggy Epley; nephew and niece, Mike and Gena Epley; great-nieces, Sara and Shelby Grace Epley; and great-nephew, Caleb Epley. All who knew Lewis in this life know Lewis was a man who was always willing to lend a helping hand and a shoulder to lean on. He was patient and kind to all he knew. The potential for Lewis will never be known because his abilities were taken early by Lou Gherigs Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Most people will remember Lewis for his real estate developments, but those who knew him on a personal basis will remember him as a true friend who had a deep faith in his Lord and Savior. Lewis was a deacon at Park Heights Baptist Church for 25 years. He and Betty led church services in two nursing homes for 18 years. They were instrumental in the founding of Southland Baptist Church where Lewis served as chairman of the building committee during the construction of their first facilities. He served on numerous committees in the church, and also served as a deacon at Southland Baptist. He will now await our reunion as he rejoices in the presence of the Father. Pallbearers will be Travis Perry, Jerry Whitehead, Jack Rice, Craig Keith, Bill Armstrong Jr., Mike Epley, Bob Vann and Bud Waller. Words cannot express the love and appreciation we have for Mrs. Paul Rabb, Ms. Margaret Alvey and all the nurses, aides, maids, and custodians for the loving care we have had for 10 years at Meadow Creek Nursing Center. Lewis had three special friends, Travis Perry, Jerry White and Dr. Jack Rice. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be made to the Southland Baptist Church Building Fund. Today marks the day of our grief in this place, Yet we know Lewis will rest forever in Gods grace. We will miss him and wish he were here, And reflect on the good memories from year to year. Then one day we too will be called from this place, To once again see Lewis face to face. CLAUDE M. WINDHAM Claude M. Windham, 98, of San Angelo passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, in a local hospital. Interment will follow in Rocky Creek Cemetery in Brown County. Awbrey Bob Avinger was born in Coleman to Rufus P. Avinger and Willie Royall Sullivan Avinger on the tenth day of August, 1911. He died the second day of August, 2001 in Eugene. Mr. Avinger lived 89 years, 11 months, 23 days. After one year of age, he spent his youth and early adult years in Brown County, Texas. He retired in Brady and in 1982, Mr. Avinger moved to Eugene, where he lived until his death. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Amber and Fred Coburn; two grandchildren, Ernie Coburn and Karyn Pedersen; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Camile Lee of Fort Worth and Kay Marshall of Midlothian, Texas; two nieces, Mrs. Camile Hornbeck of Fort Worth and Cassandra Smart of Midlothian; and two nephews, Charles Avinger of Midlothian and Dr. Bill Lee of Ennis, Texas. Two brothers and Mr. Avingers beloved wife, Leona Hartwig Avinger, preceded him in death. She is buried in Rocky Creek Cemetery. In his later years, he married the wonderful Peg Inman, who also preceded him in death. Her family embraced him and he was able to be the world-class grandfather that he had not yet had the opportunity to be. His life with Peg and her family had made him extremely happy. His new family gave him a renewed purpose in his life. His family in Texas is most grateful to them for loving and caring for Mr. Avinger. Mr. Avingers latter years were very fulfilling for him. We are also very grateful of the excellent loving care given by Brenda and Mike Silvers in his final years. Many thanks to all of you. He attended school at Cedar Point, Dulin and Brookesmith. He graduated from Brookesmith High School as valedictorian of his class, completing his public school education in eight years, years and received a scholarship to Texas Tech. During World War II, from 1941 to 1943, Mr. Avinger worked for California Ship Building Corp. building Liberty and Victory merchant ships on Terminal Island in California. In 1943, he enlisted in the Army Corps of Engineers and was stationed in Phoenix, Ariz.; Pasadena, Calif.; New Zealand; and the Philippine Islands. After the war, he was discharged from the Army. Mr. Avinger returned to May, Texas, to a life of stock farming, raising sheep, goats and horses. He also graduated from auctioneers school. His love of goats and horses continued throughout his life. He was active in establishing the milk goat industry in Texas. Not only did he own a nice foundation stock Quarter Horse mare, he also provided a home for more than one horse that just needed a kind person to take them in their retirement. Mr. Avinger was well known and had many friends. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. With all of Gods creatures, human and animal, he lived by the Golden Rule and followed Christs teaching that what you do for the least of these, you do for me. As his youngest sister, I can never remember him having an unkind word to say about or to anyone. Some of the fondest memories and happenings were in his early years. When he was only two, while in a church service, he looked at the preacher and said, You are sadly mistaken. About that same age, during an all-day church gathering under a brush arbor, he was left in the fringe-topped surrey asleep under our mothers watchful eye. He awoke and took the reins and buggy whip and attempted to drive the horses up the tree to which they were tied. Mr. Avinger always put his family first. During the Depression he sent two days wages to his sisters so that they could see Gone With the Wind when it was first released. He put himself in the hands of God years ago. One example is when he and his wife were invited to spend the night in the home of a couple in Winters. Mr. Avinger was concerned about his problem with psoriasis offending the couple. He and his wife prayed over the situation and when the time came for them to go to the conference where they would be the guests of the couple, his symptoms had completely gone. His doctors were amazed, but Mr. Avinger knew that God is capable of any miracle. Mr. Avingers symptoms were never significant after that time. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 Mr. Avinger could sing well as soon as he could talk. His clear, beautiful voice had a wide range. When he was about 12 years old, he was riding his beloved paint horse by the Cedar Point School where a babys funeral was being held across from the cemetery. Two men came out and asked him if he was R.P. Avingers son. Mr. Avinger said that he was. The men then asked Mr. Avinger is he would lead the singing for the funeral. He dismounted, went into the funeral and led the singing wearing his boots and riding clothes. Mr. Avinger had written numerous hymns. He donated the land for the building and helped to organize a church near Portales, N.M. He worked tirelessly with a street mission in Las Vegas, Nev. He was licensed to preach in the Baptist church and held song services and preaching services in the nursing homes of Brady. He was an active member of the Brownwood VFW. Mr. Avinger will be missed and fondly remembered by his loved ones, including Brenda and Mike Silvers, his loving caretakers during his last years. Could you but know my daily portion here, You would not, could not, wish me there. I know now why He said, Ear hath not heard. I have no words, no alphabet, Or even if I had; I DARE not tell Because you could not bear it yet. So, only this- I am the same, though changed, Like Him! A joy so rich and strong I never dreamed that any heart could hold, And all my life is one glad song. Sometimes when you are talking to the Lord He turns and speaks to me Dear heart, In that rare moment you and I are just The distance of a word apart! And so, my loved ones, do not grieve for me Around the family board today; Instead, rejoice, for we are one in Him, And so, I am not far away. JOE H. MUSIC Joe H. Could you but know my daily portion here, You would not, could not, wish me there. I know now why He said, Ear hath not heard. I have no words, no alphabet, Or even if I had; I DARE not tell Because you could not bear it yet. So, only this I am the same, though changed, Like Him! A joy so rich and strong I never dreamed that any heart could hold, And all my life is one glad song. Sometimes when you are talking to the Lord He turns and speaks to me. . . Dear heart, In that rare moment you and I are just The distance of a word apart! And so, my loved ones, do not grieve for me Around the family board today; Instead, rejoice, for we are one in Him, And so, I am not far away. JOE H. MUSIC Joe H.
