Melanie Jane Wilde was born July 15, 1950, to the loving parents, Cordula and Edwin Wilde of Wall. The Wildes are a prominent farming family whose farming heritage stems from the German land movement of the 1840s. The Wildes came to Texas from northwest Germany in 1845. They had hopes of settling in the Castro Colony in West Central Texas. They first settled in Quihi, Texas, and later migrated to Freslberg. From there, the family found a base from which it grew and prospered with the family members then branching out into Wall and its surrounding German communities. Melanies childhood involved activities at home with her mother on Sunday afternoon. She worked on the farm with her three brothers. She was active in many organizations in high school and in the St. Ambrose Catholic Church. After high school graduation in 1968, she attended Angelo State University and graduated in 1972. She received many academic honors and participated in many organizations on campus. Upon graduation, Melanie began her teaching career at Santa Rita and Sacred Heart Cathedral School with kindergarten students. During her career, she was the director at the Angelo State University kindergarten program, taught at Glenmore and Crockett Elementary and was presently the librarian at Crockett Elementary. She always found time to assist and support her familys business of M.L. Leddy Boot Company and Rusty Franklin Boot Company, at the same time operating her farms and keeping them productive. Melanie married Rusty Franklin on July 28, 1973, in Wall. Together Rusty and Melanie proudly and lovingly raised three children, Jed, Casey and Betsy. Melanies finest moments were spent being a loving daughter, sister, wife and above all a wonderful mother. Her love for her church and family was evident in her daily life. She derived pleasure from attending all the athletic, musical, club and academic activities of her children. San Angelo benefited from Melanies involvement in many community and civic organizations including PTA, Stock Show and Rodeo Association, Junior League, many activities of Holy Angels Catholic Church and numerous others. Her funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. (Bud, Deacon) Foster Jr. was born on July 9, 1922, in Big Spring, Texas and was called home on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2001, and now peacefully rests in the eternally loving arms of Jesus after a two and a half year struggle with lung disease. He spent his last day with his wife, Lucille, and among his friends at Polo Park Estate in Midland. He was a longtime resident of West Texas and made many friends throughout his lifetime. Dee touched many lives and was always quick with a smile and a warm greeting. Friends and family were alerted to his arrival by the familiar whistling that seemed to be ever present and reflected the joy that filled his heart. Dee loved the Lord throughout his life and shared that love with many. His walk with God earned him the nickname of Deacon. He was a long-standing member of the Masonic Lodge and served in Baptist churches throughout the Permian Basin as well as Corpus Christi, Kingsland and San Angelo. Although Dee put God first and foremost, his family was near and very dear to his heart. Dee married Martha Applewhite on Sept. 13, 1940, in Big Spring. Dee and Martha were blessed with two children, Kay Clifton and Dee C. Foster. Martha preceded Dee in death in 1951. Dee married Lucille Cathey in Lovington, N.M. on June 26, 1953. They were blessed with two children, Pamela Wilson and Mark Foster. Dee served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps. He had the distinction of being the first to enlist in Howard County at the outset of war. He was discharged as a sergeant in December 1945. The heavy-handed sergeant had a reputation of allowing recruits to go AWOL to visit their mothers after dark. Dee served the oil and gas industry for about 40 years, retiring from Tret-O-Lite in 1983. He had the distinction of being the first million-dollar salesman. Although this accomplishment may seem lofty, to Dee it was a labor of love. Dee made many of his lifelong friends from having served in this industry, and he rarely, if ever, met a stranger. He loved people more that his work, which is why he was so successful. He was widely known and respected throughout the industry and his footprints are still visible. Upon retirement the sentiments of his company were reflected on a plaque presented to him by his peers that read: . . . blazing a trail for us to follow as one of Tret-O-Lites greatest men. Dee went by many names during his lifetime, but to those of us who loved him, he was known as loving husband, loving father, loving friend. Were all going to miss him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dee and Kate Foster, and one sister, Anna Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Lucille; his sister, Mary Holland of San Angelo; his four children, Kay Clifton of Big Spring, Dee C. Foster of Austin, Pamela Foster Wilson of Snyder and Mark J. Foster of Midland. He is also survived by his sons-in-law, Robin Clifton of Big Spring and Jimmy Wilson of Snyder; as well as one daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Foster of Austin; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Sean Foster, John Foster, Jeff Clifton, Robin Clifton, Jimmy Wilson, Danny Hull, Bubba Dennis and Buford Parmer. Honorary pallbearers will be Otis Wilson, Herb Miller, Larry Falls, Herman Stokes and Webb Farrish. Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, in the Peace Chapel in Trinity Memorial Park with Chaplain Skip Hedgpeth of Midland officiating. Family visitation will be held in the Family Gathering Room at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home on Saturday from noon until the service time and after the services until 4:30 p.m. The family requests memorials be made to the American Lung Association, P.O. Box 26460, Austin, TX 78755-0460 or to the American Cancer Society, c/o Lucy Bonner, P.O. Box 2121, Big Spring, TX 79721-2121. Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home. GEORGE W. LOWN YORKTOWN, Va. In loving memory of George W. Lown who passed away Aug. 14, 2001, in Yorktown, Va.
