Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Ellis Funeral Home. Paula Knox was born Oct. 17, 1937, in Pampa, Texas, to Paul and Anna Green. She was reared and educated in Wheeler and graduated from Wheeler High School before moving to Sunray. She worked for Taylor Brothers Waterwell Drilling. In 1973, she moved to Dalhart where she farmed and raised hogs. She then moved to Greenwood and went to work for Roy Greer then in 1983 she moved to Midland and went to work for the First National Bank in Stanton as a secretary to the bank president. In October 1994, she married G.W. Tee Knox. She retired in January 1995. Paula was preceded in death by her previous husband, Merrill Dryden. She is survived by her current husband, G.W. Tee Knox of the ranch in Tarzan, Texas; her son, Rick Hays of Stillwater, Okla.; her daughter, Jennifer Harris of Friona, Texas; her brother, Harold Green of Tucumceh, Okla.; and her five grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Devin, Darrell Rogers, David Matthews, Jimmy Strube, Gary Cramblet, Arlan Youngblood, David Moore and Lee Howard. BLANCHE WALKER Blanche Robison Walker, 87, of Ozona died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at her residence. Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Ozona Church of Christ. Arrangements are by Preddy Funeral Home. Blanche was born Dec. 5, 1913, at the ranch in Terrell County to Pinkney and Pearle Robison. She was the granddaughter of Crockett County family, Jones and Amy Miller. They moved to Ozona when her brother, Miller, began school so he, Blanche and Totsy could attend the best schools in the area. After graduating from Ozona High, Blanche attended Abilene Christian College where she met C.O. Lefty Walker, a left-handed basketball player from Retrop, Okla. Her degree was in home economics. Lefty and Blanche married in 1937 and moved to Lueders, near Abilene. They moved to Ozona in 1942 during the war and began ranching north of town until 1961, when they moved their ranching operation to Terrell County. Blanche has served the Womans Forum in many capacities, also the PTA, the Girl Scouts, Ozona Country Club Ladies Bridge and the Sewing Club. She knitted 143 pairs of baby booties and kept the list of recipients. She has been Cook of the Week and was known for her pear relish recipe. She hosted many bridal and baby showers. Together Blanche and Lefty formed Leftys Turkey Patch and had a successful mail order business that sold smoked turkeys for 25 years. This ingenuity and hard work helped them endure the 1950s seven-year drought. They both were members of the Supper Bridge Club, the 42 Club and active members of the Church of Christ. Blanche taught preschool Sunday school for many years. They started a reunion of their college friends in 1947, first held at Devils River for many years. It has continued the first weekend in June and is now held in Abilene. Blanche was preceded in death by a brother, Miller Robison; and a sister, Totsy Hagelstein. She is survived by her husband, C. O. Lefty Walker of Ozona; two daughters, Gwynel Wells of Dallas and Janis Almand of Irving; son-in-law, Darrell Almand; grandson, Gary and Lacey Wells of Dallas; granddaughters, Gaylynn and Mark Neas of Houston, Amy Almand and Anna Almand of Irving; great-grandchildren, Reece and Holly Ann Wells, Taylor, Brooke and Lauren Neas; one sister-in-law, Eda Robison of Fort Davis; one brother-in-law, Wes Graham of Lompoc, Calif.; and numerous nephews and nieces. Blanche was a very special and loving wife of 64 years. A wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. JACK DONALD RIGGS MIDLAND Jack Donald Riggs died on Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, after a brief illness. Jack Riggs, a native of Electra, Texas, was born on Jan. 27, 1925, to Alice and William Riggs. His early schooling, including high school graduation, was completed in Big Spring. Jack enrolled at the University of Texas before serving in the Pacific Theatre as a Naval officer from 1945 to 1948. Following the war, Jack returned to the University of Texas where he was active in student government, Silver Spurs, and Chi Phi fraternity. He received a business degree in 1949. That same year he married Margery Sherar in Houston and they moved to Snyder, Texas, where he went to work for Reed Roller Bit. He was hired by Llano Drilling Company in 1951 as vice-president and moved to Midland, Texas. He became president of Llano in 1955. In 1964, Llano was sold and Jack went to work for Forest Oil Corporation as division manager of the West Texas Division in Midland. In 1972, Jack and his family moved to London, where he was the manager of Forest Oils North Sea operations. In 1977, he became a director of Forest and returned to Midland. He retired from Forest Oil in January of 1987. Jack contributed to his community in numerous ways, including service on the board of Trinity School and president of that board and also as a board member and president of the board of the Museum of the Southwest. He was a member of the board of the Texas Commerce Bank and a trustee of Arts Assembly of Midland. Jack was an avid bird hunter, fisherman and collector of American art. Because of his interest in Texas history, he built a fine collection of maps of the Republic of Texas. Kindness, honesty and sincerity marked every moment of his life; his sense of humor was without parallel. He will be missed. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Margery Sherar Riggs. He is survived by his daughters, Katherine Grella and husband, Michael, of Midland, Susan Brown and husband, Mark, of Fort Worth and Elizabeth Bryan Huggins of Midland; seven grandchildren, John, Margery, Elizabeth and Will Grella, Ashley, Riggs and Bryan Brown; his sister, Dorothy Phillips ; and nieces and many friends. ROBERT CLAY MIDDLETON GILLETTE, Wyo. Graveside service for Robert Clay Middleton, 21, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, in Ula Cemetery in Westcliffe, Colo. He died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, in an automobile accident near Recluse, Wyo. Robert Clay Middleton was born Feb. 3, 1980, in Odessa, Texas, to Robert Carl and Billie Kay (Reynolds) Middleton. He was raised in Monahans, Texas, moving to Pineville, Wyo., in the sixth grade. In the ninth grade, he moved with his family to Hobbs, N.M., where he graduated from Hobbs High School in 1998. He then attended New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, on a scholarship for a year. In May 1999, he moved to Gillette where he worked at Smiths Grocery as the frozen goods manager. He also was attending Gillette Campus for Electrical Engineering. He loved fishing and building computers. He is survived by his parents, Robert Carl and Billie Kay Middleton of Gillette; three brothers, Brian Starustka with the U.S. Air Force in Brussels, Belgium, Joseph Starustka of San Marcos, Texas, and Carl Eddie Middleton of Gillette; a sister, Cynthia Cooper of Ashburn, Va.; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Merle Reynolds of Westcliffe; and paternal grandmother, Mildred Middleton of San Angelo. LAURINE JULIA NORRELL WATAUGA Laurine Julia Norrell, 81, a longtime resident of San Angelo passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, in Watauga. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. Laurine was born Sept. 6, 1919, in El Campo, Texas, to William H. and Marie Shiller. She graduated from high school in Skidmore, Texas, where she spent most of her teen-age years. After winning a typewriter in a contest, she did copy work in an abstract office in Beeville, Texas, and then moved with her family to the Ballinger area to farm. She trained in the quartermasters office at Goodfellow Air Force Base and at Midland Army Bombardier School. She then spent six yeas in the Signal Corps Intelligence and Post Engineers office at Camp Bowie. She was married in 1946 and relocated to Chattanooga, Tenn., where she worked in data processing for the Tennessee Valley Authority. After returning to San Angelo, she worked as deputy registrar and as receptionist for Drs. Finks and Chase and retired after 23 years as a dental assistant and bookkeeper for Dr. Paul Knittel. She enjoyed many retirement years at Rio Concho Manor and was a member of First United Methodist Church. Laurine loved music and played the piano, guitar and harmonica and enjoyed hobbies of gardening, crocheting and crafts. Survivors include daughters, Sharon Norrell Albert and husband, Mike Albert, of Southlake and Beverly Norrell Williamson of Austin; sister, Willie Mae Salge of Beeville; brother, Leroy W. Shiller and wife, Frances, of Dallas; grandchildren, Tanner S. Albert, Seth T. Williamson and Jayme L. Williamson; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. BERNIE R. MARECEK BALLINGER Bernie died at his farm home at 6:45 p.m., Aug. 19, 2001, after a three-year battle with cancer. He was born Aug. 19, 1923, in the Rowena area to Laddie and Mary Marecek. He moved with his family to the Fairview community near San Angelo, attended school at Fairview, and graduated from San Angelo High School in 1941. From 1942 to 1946, Bernie served with the 153RD AAA Gun Battalion in the Southwest Pacific, the island of New Guinea and the liberation of the Philippines. He married Lula Schwertner on Jan. 28, 1948, in Rowena. Bernie was a farmer all his life and loved Polka music. He was a member of St. Josephs Catholic Church, S.P.J.S.T, and Sons of Hermann. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Lula; and three sons, Ronnie of San Angelo, Dan of Rowena and Glen and his wife, Mary, of Midkiff. He was preceded in death by one son, John William, on Feb. 20, 1951; and his parents, Laddie and Mary Marecek. Arrangements are by Johnsons Funeral Home. Mr. Gore was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Waco to Warren A. and Eldie Mae Gore. At age 11 he moved to Hale Center, Texas, where he attended school. In 1937 while working in Bronte he married Nerva Pruitt. Mr. Gore served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for Civil Service as a jet engine mechanic, both at Goodfellow Air Force Base and Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, He retired in 1976. He is survived by his wife, Nerva Gore of Big Lake; four sons, Ron Gore and wife, Doris, and Gary Gore and wife, Karen, all of Big Lake, Winford Gore and fiancee, Elizabeth Bray, of San Angelo and J.C. Jamie was born Aug. 8, 1928, to Walton and Bertha Kothmann in London, Texas, and attended school in London and Menard. He married June Cates on Aug. 20, 1947. A leader in the West Texas sheep industry, Jamie attended Texas A&M University then returned home to help in the family livestock buying business. He and his brother, Carlton, went into partnership in 1947 and founded Kothmann Commission Co. Jamie was a member of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association for over 45 years and in 1994 received the Fred Earwood Award for lifetime achievement. Over the years, Jamie served as chairman of the Lamb Committee of the National Livestock and Meat Board, was on the executive committee of the National Wool Growers and American Sheep Producers Council and was president of the National Lambfeeders Association. In 2001, he was presented the Shepherds Award by the NLFA in appreciation of his many years of service. Jamie also served on the National Sheep Improvement Panel and Lamb Promotion Coordinating Committee. He was the director of the Menard National Bank for 34 years and was a member of the Menard Business Mans Association. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, June Cates Kothmann; two sons, Jack Kothmann of Menard and Jay Kothmann and wife, Ann, of Menard; one daughter, Joretta McAllister and husband, Walter, of Menard; grandchildren, Jud and Joe Kothmann, and Kristen and Wylen McAllister; brother, Carlton Kothmann and wife, Barbara Rue, all of Menard; and his extended family of many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. He was born Oct. 11, 1912, near Briggs, Texas. He moved to the San Angelo area when he was 17 years of age. He worked on several West Texas ranches as a cowboy. He drove a San Angelo city bus for 26 years. He also worked for Pearl Beer Distributing, Don Miller Refrigeration and JA Owens Produce Co. He retired in 1981 and moved to Bandera, Texas. He was a past member of the Johnson Street Church of Christ and member of the Bandera Church of Christ. He was associated with Boy Scout Troop #9 for several years and was a member of the Woodmen of the World. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Vera Louisa Sandlin Smith of Bandera; son, C. He was born March 12, 1922, in Brownwood. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a veteran of World War II. He was owner and operator of an auto repair shop and coin-operated laundries. He was a resident of San Angelo from 1936 to 1988. He was married to Nelta Stewart in August of 1940 in Laredo. She preceded him in death June 23, 1984. WILSON Kenneth Ellis Wilson, 86, of San Angelo, passed away August 23, 2001 at his home. He was born Oct. 15, 1914 in Weatherford, Okla., to Ellis and Mabel Wilson. Ken married Alice Amanda Hostetler on July 4, 1937, and welcomed son, Ralph Ellis, into the world on May 4, 1942. Ken worked through the 30s and early 40s supplying and servicing wind chargers, oil, electric and repairs to many farms and ranches in West Texas, moving to San Angelo in 1938. After World War II, Ken opened Wilson Marine in San Angelo, serving the areas boaters and fishermen for more than 35 years, before retiring in 1981. An expert fisherman and seasoned boater, The Old Fisherman, as he was known by many of his friends, contributed immeasurably to the sport of fishing in San Angelo. As owner of Wilson Marine, Ken sponsored the Concho Bass Club tournament for years. He took friends, customers, and tourists alike out on the lakes in search of the perfect fishing hole, and worked with local, state and Federal Parks and Wildlife officials to promote fishing and boating in the area. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Earl Wilson and wife, Alice. He is survived by his son, Ralph; brother, Eldon Wilson and wife, Daisy, of San Angelo; sister Claire Jones and husband, Ted, also of San Angelo; grandchildren, T.C. and wife, Natosha, Anne and Elaine Wilson, all of Austin; and great-grandchildren, Chris, Lea, and Ana Wilson of Austin and Catherine Rockwell of Austin. She attended elementary schools in Panhandle and Tabernash, Colo., and was able to skip the second grade. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1931. Louise married Ernest Clendennen on Sept. 8, 1934, in Amarillo. They moved to Los Angeles in 1941, while Ernest was serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Louise worked in a ladies dress shop and later for Northrup Aircrafts performing secretarial duties. The couple moved back to Amarillo in 1946 and to San Angelo in 1947. In 1949 they moved to Silver, Texas, at the beginning of the oil boom, and they moved to Robert Lee in 1984. Her passions in life were her family and watching her grandchildren participate in all of their extracurricular activities. She also enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles and always made family members put a piece in the puzzle before they could eat. She and Ernest enjoyed many years of travel and always looked forward to planning their next adventure. She was involved in politics and loved a good battle. She never was embarrassed to let everyone know her opinion even when her position was unpopular. She had many letters published in the editorial pages that always drew a barrage of letters and phone calls. She was born Sept. 7, 1949, in San Angelo to Earl and Sarah Yates. She married De Lux on Oct. 19, 1968, and together they had three children and one grandchild. Sherry was an agent for Germania Insurance Co. for more than 25 years. She was involved in many community activities, which included the Chamber of Commerce Board, the Game Association Board, City Council Board and Democratic Party chairman. She sponsored the St. Judes Childrens Hospital Bike-A-Thon. Sherry was elected Woman of the Year in 1994. Sherry loved her work and was a devoted friend to everyone. Her untiring efforts will be greatly missed by her family and friends. FRED CARROLL FARMER Fred Carroll Farmer died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, in his home. Carroll was born July 14, 1917. He was the child of Fred and Ellen Farmer. He was in the livestock industry all his life. His early days were spent on ranches in the Fort Worth area. Carroll spent two years of active duty in the Navy, stationed in Newfoundland. Carroll moved to San Angelo in 1958 from Fort Worth. He retired from the livestock industry in 1973 and enjoyed his passion of fishing. Carroll Farmer was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Zane Farmer. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Opal; granddaughter, Lisa Coleman and husband, Michael, of Midland; great-grandson, Eric Coleman of Midland; daughter-in-law, Judy Farmer of San Angelo; and grandson, Brindon Farmer of San Angelo. It was Carrolls wish to donate his body to Texas Tech Medical Center for research. No memorial service is planned. He was a rancher and a member of First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and four sisters. Services are pending at Leatherwood Memorial Chapels. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries SHERRY DIANE YATES LUX ELDORADO Sherry Diane Yates Lux, 51, of Eldorado passed away Friday, Aug. 24, 2001, at 2:45 a.m. in Houston at St. Lukes Episcopal Hospital. She was born Sept. 7, 1949, in San Angelo to Earl and Sarah Yates. She married De Lux on Oct. 19, 1968, and together they had three children and one grandchild. Sherry was an agent for Germania Insurance Co. for more than 25 years. She was involved in many community activities, which included the Chamber of Commerce Board, the Game Association Board, City Council Board and Democratic Party chairman. She sponsored the St. Judes Childrens Hospital Bike-A-Thon. Sherry was elected Woman of the Year in 1994. Sherry loved her work and was a devoted friend to everyone. Her untiring efforts will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her husband, De Lux; three children, Teresa Thomas, Stuart Lux and wife, Lisa, and Mitzi lux; her parents, Earl and Sarah Yates; three sisters, Tanya Shanklin, Randy Mitchel and Jill Smith; a brother, Jackie Yates; and one grandchild, Tevyn Thomas.
