WILBURN GREEN To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give ones self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived this is to have succeeded. As well written as this short piece is, there is still no way to adequately capture in writing the life of Wilburn Green. There is a phrase that starts Tis better to have loved Most people would carry the phrase on to its end but not Wilburn. That would have been too philosophical and he did not dwell on concepts. He was a just do it kind of guy. He lived life to the fullest and loved like there was no tomorrow. Wilburn was born in a tent at Camp Wood on March 12, 1924. He was a twin and was such a big baby that he was nicknamed Fat right away. Wilburn had 11 brothers and sisters. Some have preceded him in death: R.E., Claudie, Jim, Golda, Lloyd, Alma and Bill. He is survived by four siblings, Opal, Juanita, Milburn and Wanda. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Being from a big family was influential in one of the great loves of Wilburns life gospel singing. His father would gather all the children around the old stove in the winter and teach them all to sing. Wilburn loved gospel singing and continued it up to the day he died. Wilburn started playing baseball almost as soon as he started to sing. He and his brother would walk or ride horseback to the games just for the love of the game. Wilburn played, coached or umpired for over 50 years. Finally, he passed the torch to younger players and was content to be an ardent fan. He would be quick to tell you that he played against the old San Angelo Colts and was one of the first season ticket holders of the new Colts. He even got the whole community of Mereta to turn out when he threw the first pitch of the season. But baseball was not the only uniform he wore. Wilburn was stationed in Germany following World War II with the Army. Coming home he traded in the Army uniform for one that brought joy to countless children over the last 50 plus years, that of Santa Claus. Wilburn actually went through three Santa Claus suits bringing joy and love to children and families all over this area. On Dec. 21, 1946, Wilburn and Margaret Bledsoe were married. Both would tell you that they had married the love of their life and it was the truth. They were rarely ever apart for all of those years. God blessed that marriage with a daughter, Peggy, who died soon after birth, and Gwyn, who married William Rosser. To that union three blessed grandchildren were given and the English language does not have a sufficient word to express the way Granddaddy felt about his Dana Ashley, Colin Ray and Devin Blaine. Words cannot truly express what all his family felt about Wilburn either. Wilburn had an ability to infect everyone around him with his enthusiasm and love. He could draw you in with his personality and make you feel better for it. He might even tell the same story over and over, but there was no guarantee you would recognize it each time. This was never more perfected then in all the sessions at the Mereta Co-op Gin Coffee Club. Funeral service for Wilburn Green will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Johnson Street Church of Christ. He will be buried in the Mereta Cemetery, the same cemetery he has cared for and tended to over 20 years. The family requests memorials be made to Visions 2000 at Johnson Street Church of Christ, 2200 Johnson St., San Angelo, TX or the Agape Fund at PaulAnn Baptist Church, 2531 Smith Blvd., San Angelo, or YMCA Capital Campaign, 305 S. Randolph, San Angelo. WILBURN GREEN To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give ones self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived this is to have succeeded. The family request memorials are made to Visions 2000 at Johnson Street Church of Christ, 2200 Johnson St., San Angelo, TX or the Agape Fund at PaulAnn Baptist Church, 2531 Smith Blvd., San Angelo, or YMCA Capital Campaign, 305 S.
