Homer Howard Haby Sr. of San Angelo passed away Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001. He was a resident of San Angelo since moving from the headquarters ranch of Calf Creek near Brady and Menard. He continued to manage ranch properties and other properties and investments from his office downtown. He was a supporter of and benefactor to the community befriending all those whom knew him with a genuine interest and concern. Homer was born Dec. 2, 1909, to Emil Haby and Kunejundy Wilhelm Haby in Lampasas, where his father owned and operated the utility power company. Homer attended Lampasas public schools. During the summer, he looked forward to visiting and working on the ranch of his maternal grandmother and various relatives near Menard. This created within Homer a great desire to care for the native Texas range land and wildlife. Homer attended Texas A&M College and was a cadet in the Air Corps for a year. He moved to Dallas and worked at the Mercantile National Bank and started Southern Methodist University. He graduated in 1933 with a bachelor of science degree in commerce and a bachelor of laws degree. He worked for the law firm of Massengale and Beleu in Fort Worth. He moved to New York City in 1936 and worked in the financial district. Also there he performed in several plays and was billed under the name Charles Oxford. He returned to Texas after war was declared in 1941. He joined and served in the U.S. Army under the 414th infantry as a sergeant until he was injured and honorably discharged. He returned to the ranch where he became a family partner. He married Minnie Elizabeth Weddell on April 9, 1947, in San Angelo. They lived at the ranch afterwards. He continued ranching, farming and managing other properties and investments for the family. In 1964, he, his wife and son, Homer Howard Haby Jr., moved to San Angelo. His son was later included in the family business. Homer was committed to conservation of range and farmland. He restored lands damaged by the drought of the 1950s and won awards for doing it. In Memory What mean you by this weeping To break my very heart? We both are in Christs keeping, And therefore cannot part. You there, I here, though parted We still at heart are one; I only just in sunshine, The shadow scarcely gone. What though the clouds surround you, You can the brightness see, Tis only a little way That leads from you to me. I was so very weary, Surely you would not mourn, That I a little sooner Should lay my burden down. Then weep not, weep not, Darling, God wipes away all tears; Tis only a little way Though you may call it years.
