Johnsons Funeral Home ELIZABETH EMERICK HOWARD Elizabeth Emerick Howard was born in Sherwood, Texas, in 1907 to Gertrude Noelke Emerick and Frank Emerick. She lived her entire life near Sherwood, on the Emerick family ranch on Spring Creek. She married Jack Howard in 1946, but he died seven years later. Her mother, Gertrude, lived with Elizabeth until Gertrudes death in 1966. From that time until Elizabeths death on Jan. 15, 2002, she lived alone on the family place. She raised sheep until she passed her 19th birthday, feeding doggie lambs with milk from her own cow. She consistently produced outstanding sheep; in 1959 she made headlines by producing a lamb crop of 179 percent. She could achieve a number such as this because of the close personal attention she gave to her animals. At the time of her death, she left her chickens behind, the last of the animals she loved and cared for. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Frances Emerick; her dear husband, Jack; and her close friend and double cousin, Marie Noelke Baker. Elizabeth leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who admired her tremendously. There are few, if any, people like Elizabeth Howard left. She worked the land single handedly, asking for little help from anyone. She loved her garden and the creatures around her, and she cared greatly about her family and its history. She lived her entire life near Sherwood, on the Emerick family ranch on Spring Creek. She married Jack Howard in 1946, but he died seven years later. Her mother, Gertrude, lived with Elizabeth until her death in 1966. From that time until Elizabeths death on Jan. 15, 2002, she lived alone on the family place. She raised sheep until she passed her ninetieth birthday, feeding doggie lambs with milk from her own cow. She worked the land single-handedly, asking for little help from anyone. She loved her garden and the creatures around her, and she cared greatly about her family and its history. BEN ALLEN NORTON Ben Allen Norton, 63, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, in San Angelo. Service will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18, in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel. Craig Meyers, pastor of St. Paul Presbyterian Church, will officiate, assisted by family and friends. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Ben was born Jan. 24, 1938, in Brownwood, Texas. He was one of four children born to Bernie and Stella Mag Norton. Ben graduated from Brownwood High School and will be remembered as an outstanding athlete in football, basketball and track as well as a standout in academics. He continued his athletic career at Howard Payne College. After graduating from college, Ben was employed with San Angelo Independent School District. He began his teaching and coaching career at Washington Jr. High and continued at Edison Jr. High, Lake View High School and Lincoln Jr. High before finishing his career at Lake View High School. He completed 37 years with the school district before his retirement in 1998. Coach Norton was dedicated to the development of young people not only on the athletic fields and the classroom, but also to their growth as young adults trying to be a success in all walks of life. He was an inspiration and made a difference in the lives of the young people he touched and to the adults who were privileged to make his acquaintance. He always had a story or a yarn to tell, as he called it. These stories were presented in such a way that a lesson was being taught. It was once said, Do the good that you can do. We do not often see the good that results from our efforts. The good things were too many to count. Honesty, loyalty, commitment, generosity and the love of kids were important to him. Bens favorite saying was, Its the principle of the thing. The many lessons that Ben taught his students and athletes about life and adversity were later put to use in his own personal life. Coach Gordon Wood once wrote to him, Not many people could endure the problems you have had and still have a bright positive attitude toward life. This tells me a lot about your faith and character. Ben was proud to be a member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church in San Angelo and a lifetime member of the Texas High School Coaches Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannene Robertson, in 1973. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a baby sister, Bernie Jan Norton; brother-in-law, Billy Ralph Bynum; and his mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Davis. Ben married Mitzi Davis Benson on July 2, 1984. The most important part of Bens life was always his family. Survivors include his wife, Mitzi Norton of San Angelo; his children, Ed Norton, Wylie Norton and wife, Cindy, of San Angelo, Shelley Norton of San Angelo, Katie Norton of Euless, Zane Yeater and husband, Tommy, of Groesbeck, Texas, and Ross Benson and wife, Sheri, of San Angelo; his grandchildren, Jeannene, Kellsi and Stacci Norton, all of San Angelo, Yanci and Blaze Yeater of Groesbeck and Cass Benson of San Angelo; two sisters and their husbands, Marjanna and Kenneth Thomas of Dallas and Rita and Ed Schuetze of San Antonio; one sister-in-law, Patsy Bynum of Sterling City; one brother-in-law and his wife, Bill and Carolyn Davis of Christoval; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ben was also blessed with his caregiver and friend, Christina Jones. Ben was affectionately known as Papaw to Jeannene, Kellsi and Stacci; and as Daddy Ben to Yanci, Blaze and Cass; as Dad to his children; and Coach to his many students, athletes and friends. The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation to all of Bens friends for their continued support through his battle with cancer. A special thanks goes to Dr. John Hunt and his staff. A special thank you also goes to a very loyal and dear friend, Brandon Tinney. Serving as pallbearers will be Brandon Tinney, Bruce McDonald, Brady Gilbert, Sterling Gilbert, Phillip Franco, Jerome Rodgers, Kevin Owen and Tad Emert. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of the righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award me on that day, not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8 Johnsons Funeral Home LOGAN SEIFERT Our Sweet Angel boy, Joshua Logan Seifert, went to God on Jan. 16, 2002. I have slipped the surley bonds of earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward Ive climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hovring there, Ive chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air. Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue Ive topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew And, while with silent lifting mind Ive trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space Put out my hand and touched the face of God.
