Harkey Funeral Home WOODROW WILSON WOODY STRAIN Woodrow Wilson Strain entered this world on April 28, 1913, in Ray, near Miles, Texas. Woody left this world for a better one when he graduated to heaven on Jan. 28, 2002. Woodys parents, J.B. Strain and Margaret Cochran Strain, were farmers and had traveled from Tupelo, Miss., by train to explore the fertile cotton fields of the area. When the train stopped in Ray, they got off and the family was hired to pick cotton on a nearby farm. They were living in a makeshift barn when Woody was born. Woody was married to Ticia Anderson on May 5, 1934, in Brownwood, Texas, and they enjoyed a long and happy life together. Many changes had taken place in Texas during his lifetime and Woody contributed his part to them. He worked as a rancher for 27 years and also worked with Strain Brothers Construction Company. When he began the construction of roads and highways, they were using mules and hand tools. When he retired after 49 years, bulldozers and many different machines had replaced the mules, but nothing could ever replace the knowledge and the pride that directed their use. Woody was very proud of the airfields and highways he helped build. Many of the wonderful roads we take for granted today were not much more than dirt trails and mud-holes before that knowledge and pride that Woody had transformed them for us. Woody is survived by his devoted wife, Ticia; a daughter, Patricia Strain of Irvine, Texas; two sisters, Nannie Lou Grimes of Mineola, Texas, and Frances Moore, of Oklahoma City; and many nieces and nephews. Longtime friends, more like family, Bob and Louise Kinsley and their children, Bobby Kinsley and Carolyn Tipton. Special friends include Sherry Gragg, Shirley Alexander, Sandye Hill and Gloria Barrera. Family visitation will be Wednesday from 5 - 7 p.m. Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Johnsons Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Darrell Smith of the Businessmens Bible Class where Woody had been a faithful member for many years. Pallbearers will be Dana Tipton, Thomas Tipton, Christopher Tipton, Dusty Cannon, Earl Miles and Bruce Mayfield. The Businessmens Bible Class will act as honorary pallbearers. The family requests memorials be made to Meals for the Elderly and or the Businessmens Bible Class or the charity of your choice.
