Survivors include his wife, Grace Chandler of Tow; son, Bill Zachary Sr. of Llano; and sister, Lydia Gray of Calif. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries ZELMA FARRIS MILAM MIDLAND Zelma Farris Milam passed away Thursday, March 7, 2002, in a Midland hospital. Zelma Farris Milam was born in Loraine, Texas, on Feb. 19, 1911, as the only daughter of Thomas W. and Etta Falkner Farris. Zelma was reared in Sweetwater, Texas, where she graduated high school in 1929. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton, Texas. She married W.E. Muggs Milam on Dec. 15, 1941, in Big Spring, Texas. Immediately following their marriage, Muggs departed for a 39-month tour in the Pacific Theater during World War II, while Zelma lived in Stanton, Texas, and worked as a bookkeeper for the Rural Electrification Administration (REA). Upon Muggs return from the Army, the couple moved to Brownwood, Texas, where their only child, Joe Thomas Milam, was born on Dec. 20, 1947. The couple later moved to Lenorah, Texas, where they managed the Planters Cotton Gins in West Texas. Muggs passed away on May 16, 1951, and Zelma and Joe moved to Robert Lee, Texas, where her father, mother and younger brother operated Farris City Drug. Zelma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Robert Lee. In 1956, she moved to San Angelo, Texas, where she lived until moving to the John F. Younger Special Care Alzheimers facility in Midland, Texas, in 1998. Zelma worked as a bookkeeper and office manager in San Angelo for many years. She was a member of Zifron Temple #100, Daughters of the Nile and a retired member of Beta Sigma Phi. She was a charter member of the San Angelo Chapter of the Business and Professional Womens Club and a charter member of College Hills Baptist Churchs Business and Professional Womens Class. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, husband, and brothers, Raphy and Buster Farris. Zelma is survived by her son, Joe Milam; daughter-in-law, Linda Milam; and her only granddaughter, Jennifer Milam of Midland. She also is survived by two aunts, one sister-in-law, seven nieces and four nephews, plus many friends who will miss her smile and determination. Zelmas life will be commemorated at a memorial service in the First Baptist Church Chapel in Midland, Saturday, March 9, at 10 a.m. with graveside service and burial in the Robert Lee Cemetery at 3 p.m. Pallbearers will be members of the Midland and Robert Lee Masonic Lodge. The family requests that memorials in her honor be made to the John F. Younger Special Care Center in Midland, or the Alzheimers Association of Greater West Texas. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9, in Brown Ranch Cemetery in Coleman County, Texas. Shawn was born Aug. 23, 1957, in San Angelo. She graduated from San Angelo Central High School and currently was attending the American Commercial College. She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara S. Coleman Olson, and her brother, Gary Dean Olson. Survivors include her two daughters, Autumn Johnson and Megan Johnson; a grandson, Stephen of Tampa, Fla.; her father, Clarence A. Johnsons Funeral Home THERESA SCHKADE EDEN Theresa Schkade, 83, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Meadow Creek Nursing Center in San Angelo. Theresa was born Nov. 8, 1918, in Eola to John and Carrie Mikeska. She married William Schkade on Dec. 8, 1938. He preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 1975. She was a stock farmer and worked for Day Loveless Butane. She was also a member of the Eola Water Co-op Board. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. WILLIAMS Leona was born Jan. 30, 1916, in San Saba County to John Alfred and Nora Lee Chapman. She passed from this life on March 7, 2002, in San Angelo. She married Jim C. Williams on Sept. 6, 1932. Leona worked for the San Angelo Independent School District as a cook for 24 years. She enjoyed cooking for her kids, as she called them. The kids always spoke to her and called her Granny. Leona and Jim had three children; daughters, Nora L. Miller and Mary Louise Glenn; and a son, James A. Curley Williams. Pecos Funeral Home DOROTHY ANN CROOKS Dorothy Ann Crooks died Thursday, March 7, 2002, at Myrtlewood Estates after a lengthy illness. A memorial service will be held in Carlsbad, N.M. Dorothy was born Nov. 7, 1924, to Ray and Dorothy Brown in Omaha, Ill. She graduated from Fairfield Illinois High School as salutatorian in 1942. She married Charles W. Crooks in August of 1942. After World War II, she worked in Chicago, Ill., while her husband attended dental school. They moved to Carlsbad, N.M., in 1951. Dorothy worked at Potash Corp. of America and then quit to raise two daughters. She was a loving wife and mother and she will be greatly missed. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Charles W. Crooks of Carlsbad, N.M.; daughter, Dr. Lida Ann Crooks and her husband, Dr. Michael F. Hartshorne of Albuquerque, N.M.; daughter, Mary E. Studt and her husband, Dr. James L. Studt; and grandchildren, Anna, Drew and Camille of San Angelo. POLLY THIERS Polly Thiers, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, went to be with the Lord Sunday, March 3, 2002. She was born August 3, 1923, to Clyde and Doll Miller. She married Otto A. Thiers Jr. on Aug. 12, 1941, in San Antonio. They moved to San Angelo after World War II ended. She was well known in the community, having served the public for many years at M-System, Warren Drug and Gift Gallery. Polly was a charter member and Sunday school teacher at the Baptist Tabernacle Church where she served the Lord faithfully for over 50 years. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, two daughters, two sons, eleven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, two sisters and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside service will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in Clyde Cemetery with Don Davis, his son-in-law, officiating. Daddy was born June 3, 1923, in Lewisville (Denton County), Texas, to Augustus Clay and Hattie Bell Nash Dabney. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Johnnie Milam; and two brothers, Travis Dabney and Lyston Dabney. Daddy grew up in Clyde and Abilene. He graduated from Abilene High School and attended Hardin Simmons University. He served his country for four years during World War II in the United States Navy. He attended Officers Training School at Notre Dame in Pittsburgh, Kan., and served aboard the U.S.S. Cottle. He began his lifelong career in the furniture business in 1947 delivering furniture for Owens Furniture in Abilene and retired as vice president of Sheppersons Furniture Company in San Angelo in 1991. Daddy was an avid golfer and a great cook. He enjoyed the outdoors, barbecues, gardening and family gatherings. Daddy is survived by four children, Jo Lyn Johnson and husband, Bert, Larry Dabney and Ronnie Dabney and wife, Mary Ellen, all of San Angelo and Nancy Davis and husband, Don, of Sterling City; two sisters, Nell Connally and husband, Hubert, of Abilene and Lucille Greenwalt and husband, Jes, of Trinity, Texas; four grandchildren, Melissa Smith and husband, Lyle, of Waco, John Johnson of Austin and Lauren Dabney and Connor Dabney of San Angelo; four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many good friends. Kay was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Marfa to pioneer ranchers, Crawford Thomas and Mary Eliza Mamie Myers Mitchell. She attended Baylor University, where she helped form The Peer Club, later Delta Delta Delta. She received a bachelors degree in 1942 and a masters degree in 1948 and taught physical education at Central High School in Little Rock and at Baylor. After leaving the university in 1959, she ranched and taught in Junction, spending summers as a counselor at Camp Waldemar for Girls. She married Dr. Samuel James Estes in December 1973. A lifelong Baptist, Kay served on the board of directors of Paisano Baptist Encampment. Her parents, her husband, a sister and two brothers preceded her in death. Survivors include her sister, Lois Mitchell Thompson of Waco; stepdaughter, Sallie Estes Dubay of Maine; two step-grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews; and numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews. Bill Pagan on Jan. 18, 1941, in Snyder, Texas. They, along with their five sons, moved to Ozona in 1964. Evelyn was an avid sports fan. She logged thousands of miles attending countless sporting events following her sons and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and her son, Gary. Survivors include four sons, Jamie of Ozona, David and Kat of Ozona, Rodney and Lisa of Del Rio and Steve and Pam of Ozona; five grandchildren, Mat of Uvalde, Heather of Del Rio, Brandon of Del Rio, Jessi of Lubbock and Toby of Ozona; and one great-granddaughter, Tyra of Lubbock. She graduated San Angelo Central High School and was currently attending the American Commercial College. She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara S. Coleman Olson; and her brother, Gary Dean Olson. Survivors include her two daughters, Autumn Johnson and Megan Johnson; a grandson, Stephen of Tampa, Fla.; her father, Clarence A. Olson and his wife, Carolyn, of Morehead, Minn.; sister, Vicki Clemens and husband, Tom, Fo San Angelo; sister, Cari Lyn Olson of Morehead, N.M.; nephew, Thomas Clemens; niece, Nicole Clemens; and Aunt Martha Gully of San Angelo. Johnsons Funeral Home MARTIN RALBOVSKY Martin Ralbovsky was born on Dec. 21, 1942, in Schenectady, N.Y., and passed away on March 2, 2002, in San Angelo, Texas. He is survived by his daughter, Andrea; and son, Kevin. Martin was a devoted father and had a very likable personality and a great sense of humor. His love of writing started at age 16 and he was soon covering local high school sports for the Schenectady Union Star newspaper. His passion for journalism stemmed from his quest for the truth and to champion the causes of the little guy. He spent over thirty years in the business where he worked for newspapers such as the New York and Los Angeles Times. He also wrote five books including Destinys Darlings, which chronicled the 1955 Schenectady Little League World Series Championship Team. The famed author James Michner in his book Sports in America called Destinys Darlings one of the best sports books ever written in America. Martin traveled the world extensively throughout his life and enjoyed Hawaii as his favorite spot. Most recently he had settled in San Angelo, Texas, where he enjoyed a simple lifestyle. Always trying to fight the good fight, Martin was active in helping the homeless situation there. He will be missed by his many friends and co-workers, but most of all by his children. A private ceremony will be under the bluest skies of Honolulu, Hawaii. Johnsons Funeral Home ALFONSE ORSAK Mr. Alfonse Orsak, 83, a longtime resident of San Angelo passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in an Athens, Texas, nursing home. Military graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 9, in Belvedere Memorial Park with the Rev. Bryan Ross officiating. Alfonse Tex Orsak was born Aug. 1, 1918, in Fayette County, Texas, son of Jim Frank Orsak and Emma Olsovsky Orsak, eldest of eight children. He had resided in Tom Green County for over 50 years. He married Juanell Pringle of Tankersley, Texas, in San Angelo on Nov. 17, 1945. Three children were born of this union. He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army, World War II, 28th Infantry Division, know as the Bloody Bucket, from 1942 until 1945. Alfonse was in a German prison camp from September 1944 until April 1945 and was a decorated P.O.W. with three bronze stars. He was discharged on Nov. 7, 1945, in San Antonio, Texas. He was active in DAV and VFW, serving Post #1815 as post commander, later becoming district commander. After discharge from the Army, he participated in job government training and worked several years in San Angelo as an automotive parts salesman. Later years, he drove oil field trucks in and around Midland, a wrecker for John Holt, Buick and a mail truck in San Angelo. He was baptized into the Church of Christ in Eldorado, Texas, in 1954. He was preceded in death by parents and two brothers, Jerry Orsak and Willy Orsak. Survivors include son, Sammy L. Orsak of Maband, Texas; two daughters, Linda C. Davis of San Angelo and Patti C. Marriott of Lubbock; three brothers, Alfred Orsak of Virginia and Julius Orsak and Raymond Orsak, both of San Angelo; two sisters, Edith Hudec and Frances Thomason, both of San Angelo; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Robert Massie Funeral Home OLGA DEE KEY PHILLIPS Olga Dee Key Phillips was born on Feb. 22, 1915, on her parents farm in the Dry Creek Community north of San Angelo. Her parents were Wesley Marvin Key and Lena Evelyn Johnston Key. She was the second of five children. Mrs. Phillips graduated from high school in Sterling City, Texas, and attended Shannon School of Nursing in San Angelo. She married George Warner Phillips on June 14, 1936, in Sterling City. They had four children and lived in many places including Big Spring, Alamosa, Colorado, Taylor, Houston, Harlingen, Laredo, San Angelo, Vernon and Fort Worth. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Karl Key; and her sister, Willie Key Glass. She is survived by one son, Warner Phillips and wife, Janet, of Lake Livingston, and three daughters, Phyllis Jackson and husband, Neal, of Stephenville, Judy Braun and husband, Pete, of Lubbock, and Jan Reed and husband, Jack, of Midland. She is survived by nine grandchildren, DeAnn Phillips, Richard May, Jeff May, Rebecca Braun, Edwin Braun, Peter Reed, Adam Reed, Tim Reed and Amy Reed; and by four great-grandchildren. Kay was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Marfa to pioneer ranchers, Crawford Thomas and Mary Eliza Mamie Myers Mitchell. She attended Baylor University, where she helped form The Peer Club, later Delta Delta Delta. She received a bachelors degree in 1942 and a masters degree in 1948 and taught physical education at Central High School in Little Rock and at Baylor. After leaving the university in 1959, she ranched and taught in Junction, spending summers as a counselor at Camp Waldemar for Girls. She married Dr. Samuel James Estes in December 1973. A lifelong Baptist, Kay served on the board of directors of Paisano Baptist Encampment. Her parents, her husband, a sister and two brothers preceded her in death. He graduated from Abilene High School and attended Hardin Simmons University. He served his country for four years during World War II in the United States Navy. He began his lifelong career in the furniture business in 1947 delivering furniture for Owens Furniture in Abilene and retired as vice president of Sheppersons Furniture Company in San Angelo in 1991. Daddy was an avid golfer and a great cook. He enjoyed the outdoors, barbecues, gardening and family gatherings. Bailey Funeral Home LEAH HARGROVE CAMPBELL Leah Hargrove Campbell passed away quietly on Friday, March 8, 2002. She was born and raised in western North Carolina in view of the Smoky Mountains. She first came to West Texas in the 1930s to visit her large Texas family, which included the Hartgroves, Hargroves, Campbells, Sims, Slaughters and Noelkes. During World War II, she served her country as the head librarian at Stark Army Hospital in Charleston, S.C. Following the war, she foresought a number of lucrative positions in large cities in the northeast and instead moved to West Texas to marry the love of her life, J.S. Campbell. Leah lived with J.S. on Silver Cliff Ranch in Concho County from 1946 until J.S.s death in 1981. At that time she moved from the ranch to San Angelo and resided there until her death. She attended First United Methodist Church and was a member of the American Association of University Women, one of the first organizations of professional women stressing womens issues. While she had numerous interests including an acumen for bridge, her life was centered around J.S. and his family and her immediate family, being her mother, Effie Hargrove and her North Carolina brothers, Theodore A. Hargrove Jr. and Foster Hargrove, who all predeceased her. She leaves behind many relatives both in western North Carolina and West Texas. Ora worked for Monarch Tile for a short time and was later able to follow her true passion of floral design. She worked for several local floral shops including Ridgway Florist and Shirley Floral and was later able to establish her own business, House of Flowers, along with her husband. Although Ora retired in 1971 she continued to design floral arrangements for specials occasions. Ora was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and the Pythian Sisters. Thilman was born Oct. 28, 1927, in Clifton, Texas, to Ennis and Lillie Erickson. He grew up in Clifton and graduated from Clifton High School. After serving eighteen months in the United States Army, he graduated from Clifton Junior College and later from North Texas State College. He later earned a master of education degree from North Texas State College. He taught school at Pyote and Dawson School at Welch, where he met and married Neta Joyce Clark of Loop on July 19, 1958. After teaching one year at Loop, he was hired in the fall of 1959 as a teacher and principal at Christoval schools, where he was the principal for twelve years. At that time he became the superintendent at Christoval until his retirement in the fall of 1986. He and his wife then moved to San Angelo. In his retirement he enjoyed drinking coffee with the group at the donut shop, running errands, driving around discovering the area and working work-seek puzzles. He also enjoyed playing dominoes, which he did with considerable skill. He remained interested in Christoval schools, receiving the Booster of the Year award in 1987 and again in 2000. He continued to enjoy watching sports at Christoval, ASU and on television. He also enjoyed grandchildrens birthday parties, sport games and dance recitals. He was a proud man with great respect of his Norwegian heritage and much knowledge of his family history who treasured his children and grandchildren. He was known to many as a big hearted, wise, loyal and dependable man. His straightforward fair dealings led him through a career that touched the lives of many children. He enjoyed his work and loved his students, always encouraging excellence in the classroom, in sports and in UIL academics. Through his wry sense of humor he showed his love and enjoyment of people. He was a kind, caring, devoted family man whose pride and joy was his wife and family. His honest, steady, simple approach with others displayed that he was a man of his word. He was a lifetime member of Texas State Teachers Association. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Clifton and associate member of Calvary Lutheran Church of San Angelo. Thilman was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mildred Outlaw, and two granddaughters, Trena Jo Baugh and Allison Ruth Baugh. Robert Massie Funeral Home MARGARET JOHNSTON HUGGHINS MIDLAND Margaret Johnston Hugghins passed away Sunday, March 10, 2002, in Hospice House in Odessa of heart failure. She was born Oct. 23, 1918, in Eureka, Texas, to William and Allie Johnston. Margaret was a cosmetologist in Crane, Texas, in 1937 when she met Blondy Hugghins. They were married June 16, 1940. She was later employed by the United States Air Force at McClelland Field, Sacramento, Calif., and Western Electric in Baltimore, Md., while her husband served in the military. She returned to Crane in 1945 to manage a beauty shop. Later she was employed by Southern Union Gas Company, Texas Electric Utility and Crane Memorial Hospital. In 1960 the family moved to Midland, where Margaret began a career as a medical assistant for various doctors, retiring in 1975. She was active in business and professional womens clubs in Crane and Midland. Margaret made church attendance a family priority. She was a member of St. Lukes United Methodist Church. Margaret valued her friendships the most. She enjoyed entertaining painting and home decorating. Her artistic creativity has touched many lives and created wonderful memories for her family in friends. Margaret is survived by her husband, John H. Hugghins of Midland, Texas; son, Ted J. She married John D. Hunter on July 15, 1972, in San Angelo, and he preceded her in death in 1977. Velma loved flowers, loved to garden and was a member of the Johnson Street Church of Christ. She was born Oct. 17, 1918, in Ballinger, Texas, to Melvin and Sadie Russell Evans. She married Alfred Fernandes in Sherman, Texas, on April 4, 1942. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger and taught Sunday school for many years. Active in the community, Bea served on the Carnegie Library Board for five years and volunteered as a part-time librarian for many more. She was a member of the Ballinger Womens Club, volunteered as a Pink Lady at the hospital and served as a Girl Scout leader and Cub Scout leader. She is survived by her husband, Al of Ballinger; a son, Michael Fernandes and wife, Linda, of Austin; a daughter, Cindy Fernandes of Ballinger; her grandchildren, Lindsey, Collin and Sarah; and two brothers, Rex Evans and his wife, Camille, of McKinney and Buddy Evans and his wife, Jeri, of Midland.
