Services are pending at Walker Funeral Home. _________________________________________________________________ Obituaries DR. CHARLEY HARRISS SHANNON Dr. Charley H. Shannon, loving father and husband, a longtime resident of San Angelo, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the age of 73. Dr. Shannon was born March 3, 1929, in Brown County, and was the son of John E. and Nora E. Shannon. He graduated from Early High School in 1946 and received his bachelor of science and masters degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, and achieved a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. He served in the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1950. He taught and coached in Texas high schools, served as high school principal and from 1968 to 1996, he taught at and retired from Angelo State University. He served as the chair of the department of kinesiology, following a year as head basketball coach and a number of years as an assistant coach. He was elected to two terms on the San Angelo Independent School District school board, and served on the boards of Rivercrest Hospital, MHMR Services for the Concho Valley, the Samaritan Counseling Center and NAMI-Texas. He also served as the president of NAMI-Concho Valley for 13 years, the Mental Illness Protection and Advocacy Advisory Committee for Advocacy Inc., the Volunteer Services Council for the San Angelo State School, the Volunteer Services Council for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation and the Citizens Review Committee for Child Protective Services. He was also a member of the San Angelo West Rotary for many years and was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. Dr. Shannon is survived by Jacqueline Shannon, his wife of 48 years; his son, Gregory P. Shannon of San Angelo; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Jean Shannon of Lubbock; his granddaughter, Julia Shannon of Lubbock; his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Camille Shannon of Austin; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Ferry of San Angelo; his brother-in-law and wife, David and Darleen Ferry of Chandlery, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews. He was born Feb. 11, 1924, in Sonora and was the son of Alfred and Clara Cooper. He grew up in Sonora, was an outstanding running back for the Sonora Broncos and a graduate of Sonora High School. Roy gave up a college scholarship to join United States Marines in World War II, where he served in 101st Marine Division in the South Pacific including Guadalcanal. He married Ruth Whittemore on Feb. 23, 1945, in San Diego, Calif. After the war, he became a motorcycle police officer for the San Diego Police Force. Roy graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburgh, Kan., where he learned the newspaper business. After college Roy returned to Sonora, where he was employed at The Devils River News for 16 years and taught college classes at the G.I. Forum. He purchased The Junction Eagle in 1968, and was editor and publisher until 1996, when he sold it to his daughter. Roy was a Master Mason of Junction City Lodge #548, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, honorary member of Rotary International, Junction Lions Club and a director of the Coke R. Stevenson Center Foundation. Roy was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife, and a grandson, Braden Cooper Whitehead. Survivors include his daughter, Debbie Cooper Kistler and husband, Jimmy, of Junction; a grandson, Dr. Bo Whitehead and his wife, Wendy, and great-granddaughter, Emma Whitehead, all of Dallas. He is also survived by two brothers, Phillip Cooper and his wife, Jeannette, of Sonora and Raymond Cooper and his wife, Faye, of San Angelo and several nieces and nephews. Audrey was born Aug. 23, 1933, to Walter and Dena Johnson Moline in Benson, Minn. She married Donald Halvorson on May 16, 1954, in Benson. He preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 1996. She was a longtime resident of San Angelo and retired in 1994 after 15 years in medical supplies at Ethicon. Audrey was a member of the Lutheran Church. Johnsons Funeral Home BILLIE JO BOATRIGHT GLEGHORN Billie Jo passed from this life on Easter Sunday after a long struggle with Alzheimers disease. She will be greatly missed by her family. She was born on a cold Feb. 19th in 1923 in the Red Bank Community of Runnels County. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Doyle Gleghorn, now of San Angelo; daughter, Ollie McCown of Miles; her son-in-law, Chester McCown; and her son, Gary Gleghorn of San Angelo. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Amy Rutherford of Eldorado and her husband, Matt; her grandson, Brett McCown of Lubbock and his wife, Liz; her sister, Bobbye Altman of Victoria; and her brother, Wilson Boatright of Ballinger. She had one great-granddaughter, Madison Rutherford of Eldorado. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Billie Doyle, her parents W.Y. and Beatrice Boatright and her brother Henry Boatright. She loved her family and her home and she took great delight in her grandchildren and in having them call her Prissy Grandma. She was baptized into the Baptist church in her early adult life and continued to practice her faith in the Foursquare Church in Ballinger as long as her health permitted. Johnsons Funeral Home DR. CHARLEY HARRISS SHANNON Dr. Charley H. Shannon, loving father and husband, a longtime resident of San Angelo, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at the age of 73. Dr. Shannon was born March 3, 1929, in Brown County and was the son of John E. and Nora E. Shannon. He graduated from Early High School in 1946 and received his bachelors of science and masters degrees from Trinity University in San Antonio and achieved a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970. He served in the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1950. He taught and coached in Texas high schools, served as high school principal and from 1968 to 1996, he taught at and retired from Angelo State University. He served as the chair of the department of kinesiology, following a year as head basketball coach and a number of years as an assistant coach. He was elected to two terms on the San Angelo Independent School District school board, and served on the boards of Rivercrest Hospital, MHMR Services for the Concho Valley, the Samaritan Counseling Center and NAMI-Texas. He also served as the president of NAMI-Concho Valley for 13 years, the Mental Illness Protection and Advocacy Advisory Committee for Advocacy Inc., the Volunteer Services Council for the San Angelo State School, the Volunteer Services Council for the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation and the Citizens Review Committee for Child Protective Services. He was also a member of the San Angelo West Rotary for many years and was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. Dr. Shannon is survived by Jacqueline Shannon, his wife of 48 years; his son, Gregory P. Johnsons Funeral Home JACK ELTON TRAINER Jack Elton Trainer, 91, died March 14, 2002, in Del Rio, Texas. He is survived by his sons, Jack E. Trainer of Island Park, Ind., Tom A. Trainer of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gene B. Trainer of Grand Junction, Colo.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Bill M. Trainer, his wife, Imogene, and was the last of twelve brothers and sisters. Jack was born Oct. 14, 1910, to Fred Trainer and Rena Adams in Sonora, Texas, and lived there many years. He played on the 1927 Sonora football team and had sons that played for the 1966, 1970 and 1971 State Championship teams. For the past 25 years he and his wife lived in the Rough Canyon area of Lake Amistad, Del Rio, Texas. He was employed by Brown Construction Co., eventually working as a superintendent for refinery construction and later owned two drive-in restaurants in the Houston area. Grace Hall Commons was born July 26, 1908, in Merritt, Okla., to William and Mary (Alexander) Hall and passed away March 22, 2002, in Georgetown, Texas, at the age of 93. Grace grew up in Elk City, Okla. She was married to Kenneth Commons in 1937 and they moved to Tulsa, Okla., and then to Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, Michigan and then back to Oklahoma City and Tulsa where Kenneth retired from the F.B.I. They moved to San Angelo, Texas, in 1965 where she began her career again as an X-ray technician. Grace worked at Shannon Hospital for 12 years and at Baptist Memorial Hospital for 15 years. She was the subject of an article written about X-ray technicians where it was stated that she was, at that time, the oldest living female X-ray technician. Grace was also very involved with the women of the church at St. Marks Presbyterian. She was many times referred to as being Amazing Grace. She most certainly lived her life as a shining example for all those around her to follow. Grace will be sorely missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters, a baby daughter, Gay Elizabeth, and her loving husband, Kenneth. Burial will follow in St. Ambrose Cemetery. Emmitt was born on Feb. 5, 1917, in Wall to George and Louisa Lizzie Feist Lehr. He married Ida Elizabeth Streicher on April 7, 1937, in San Angelo. They celebrated 63 years of marriage prior to her death on March 29, 2001. Emmitt attended school at St. Anthony, Wall and San Angelo High School. He was orphaned at an early age with his sisters and brother after the death of his mother in 1930 and his father in 1933. He began farming land his grandfather William Lehr owned north of Wall at the age of 16 while still attending school, harvesting his first crop at the age of 17. He was awarded the Lonestar Farming Award while attending high school. He lived and farmed in the Wall area his entire life, also farming land in the Tom Green and Concho County area. Emmitt was a lifetime member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and a member of the St. Ambrose Mens Society. He was a member and president of the Wall School Board from 1947 to 1967, and was one of the first organizers of the Wall Co-op, serving as its first elected president from 1950 to 1975. He served as past director on the Millersview-Doole Water Supply Corp., along with various other boards and committees throughout his lifetime in the Wall community. His wife, parents and sister, Dorothy Lehr Herman, preceded him in death. Mrs. Spreen believed in busy hands, maintaining her home, gardening, needlework and enjoying cooking. She was famous for remembering everyones favorite foods and would serve it when they visited or worked at the ranch. Okra gumbo, fried chicken and apple pies were her most requested foods. On her 75th birthday she was honored with her first birthday party. As she made the guest list she invited ladies who were good talkers, conversations was a big item to her. Rains-Seale Funeral Home CAROLE WASSOM CRISP Carole Wassom Crisp went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 4, 2002, at the age of 65, after a courageous battle with cancer. Carole was born on July 12, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas, to Tressie Tucker and Clayton Wassom. Carole graduated from Lake View High School in 1953. She married Gerald Crisp on Dec. 31, 1953, in San Angelo, Texas, where they spent most of their life. She worked along side her husband for 32 years in their family business. Carole was very devoted to her family. The highlight of her life was being involved with her children and grandchildren and following them in all their school and extracurricular activities. She also enjoyed being involved in the San Angelo Saddle Club where she competed in Playdays for many years. In 1986, Carole and Gerald participated in the Sesquicentennial Wagon Train that circled Texas, where she rode horseback or drove a wagon the entire trip. Carole was very active in her church and Sunday School Class, where she played the piano for her department, at Immanuel Baptist Church. Her church family was a very important part of her life. One thing that gave her peace through this struggle was the knowing that all of her family loves and belongs to the Lord. She was preceded in death by her father, Clayton Wassom of Austin. Lela was born May 11, 1917, in Morrilton, Ark., to Emma and Abraham Bufford Garner. She married Grover C. Skid Skidmore Sept. 3, 1939, in San Antonio, Texas. Lela attended San Angelo schools and graduated from Central High School. She also attended San Angelo Junior College. She and Skid spent most of their 57 years of marriage in San Angelo. But in 1965, they moved to a mountain valley in Arkansas where they lived for about 20 years amid the Ozark National Forrest. They returned to their native Texas in the 1980s. Lela was a premier volunteer. She served the El Camino Girl Scout Council in many capacities. She was involved in PTA serving as a founding member and first president of San Angelo Independent School Districts Special Education School PTA. She was always an active church member who especially enjoyed singing in the choir. Her husband preceded Lela in death. They had four children Anne, Calvin Wally, Elizabeth and Jane. Sug was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Family was everything to Sug and she was happiest when she could spend time with her children and grandchildren. Sug remained active in farming and ranching until her death. Upon graduation, he attended Texas A&M University where he earned a bachelors of science degree in agricultural economics and became a member of the Corp Cadets, graduating in 1969. He then attended pilot training at Webb Air Force in Big Spring, Texas, from 1969 to 1970. He married Barbara Koy on Sept. 13, 1969, in Fort Worth, Texas. George served two tours during the Vietnam War where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross Medal. After serving his country for 21 years in the Air Force he retired as a Lt. Colonel. George then became a pilot for United Airlines where he continued to fly as he so well liked to do for 12 years until illness forced him to retire in January of 2002. George was a member of San Angelo Masonic Lodge 570, San Angelo York Rite Bodies, Suez Shrine, Heart of Texas York Rite College, an avid member of Abilene Gun Club, Abilene A&M Club and First Central Presbyterian Church of Abilene. Preddy Funeral Home ERNESTEEN TEEN SWIDERSKI Ernesteen Teen Swiderski passed away Friday, April 5, 2002, in Windcrest Alzheimers Care Center in Abilene, Texas. Graveside service will be held in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens on Monday, April 8, at 2 p.m. with Nelson L. Erwin, CLP, First Presbyterian Church officiating. Teen was born on Feb. 9, 1923, in a cabin in the mountains of northern Alabama. She was the eighth of ten children born to Talmer Barfoot and Harriett Abercrombie. The family moved to southeastern Missouri in 1925 where they farmed cotton and other crops. Teen graduated from high school in Risco, Missouri, excelling in womans basketball. During the Second World War, she worked as a telephone operator near an airbase in Malden, Missouri, where she met and married her husband, Ted Swiderski Sr. on May 22, 1946. Teens pleasure in life was her friends and family. She and her husband moved to San Angelo from Florida in 1984 to be near her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Ted Jr. and Becky and Steve and Susie; three grandchildren, Jordan, Chris and Keith; three brothers, Clark, Millard and Huitt Barfoot; two sisters, Gladys Clayton and Edna Bentley; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff at Windcrest Alzheimers Care Center for their attentive care and compassion.
