Johnsons Funeral Home LOVELL SMITH HAMILTON Lovell Smith Hamilton, affectionately nicknamed Lovely Alice by her grandfather and also known as Lovell by dear friends and Mrs. Hamilton by her many piano students, was born at home on Rogers Williams Avenue in Providence, R.I., on Dec. 11, 1919. Her love of music began at the early age of four, when she studied piano with accomplished eastern professors holding doctorates in music. As a young child, she enjoyed numerous travel adventures with her mother and grandmother. She met her lifelong partner and adoring husband, Howard Hamilton. Howard was a professional cowboy from Winters, Texas, who was stationed at the Naval base in Rhode Island. As fate would have it, they met at a USO Club when both tried their best at polka dancing. They began their married life in Colorado Springs, Colo., in the ranch and dairy business. Amidst her farming chores, Lovell found time to teach piano lessons to the local school children. Later, they relocated to Kerrville, Texas, where Lovell fell in love with the many Texas wildflowers that she welcomed each spring. The couple retired to San Angelo. Howard became the popular neighborhood bike repairman. Mrs. Hamilton gained notoriety for mentoring successful piano students and for an endless supply of her special homemade chocolate chip cookies. In her later years, a neighbor often recalled seeing her in the wee hours of the night baking her famous cookies made of real butter and chocolate chips and preparing music plans for the next day. An early-arriving student often found her nurturing her beautiful flower garden in the backyard prior to lessons. Her famed Australian Shepherd, Goldie, always accompanied her side, even to her morning ritual outing for coffee. She filled the empty years without Howard with fond travels to Africa, Alaska and Asia. Her favorite mode of transportation was upon the Queen Elizabeth II. She always returned with gifts from abroad for the drawing at her annual Christmas recital. Her students continued to fill her home with the rich spirit of music as she patiently taught up to her last days. In the end, she expressed these words found in a childrens story: I will travel with the love of those who loved me, the warmth of those who cared, the happiness and the memories, and the music that we shared. I will cherish all the friendship I was fortunate to find, all the love and all the laughter in the place I leave behind. All these good things will go with me, they will make my spirit glow, and that light will shine forever in the next place that I go. All those that love Lovell want to extend a heartfelt thanks to Hospice of San Angelo and her many special business friends for their special guidance, attention, love and prayers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Angelo Catholic School and the First Presbyterian Church Singing Boys and Singing Girls Choir. A memorial service will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Johnsons Funeral Home GLADYS LILLIAN RABURN TILLERY Gladys Lillian Raburn Tillery went to be with the Lord Jesus on Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at the age of 92 in San Angelo. Gladys was born on Oct. 1, 1909, in Temple, Texas, to John Calvin Raburn Jr. and Alberta Martin Raburn. She was the granddaughter of John Calvin Raburn Sr. and Lydia Jane Bigham, and James Valentine Martin and Mary L. Frances Lancaster. Gladys graduated from Lake View High School on May 22, 1929, and was the oldest living survivor from her class. She married her beau, Cleo Glenn Tillery, down at the First Baptist Church a few hours before graduation. Gladys father originally brought the family to San Angelo by train, where they first lived at Fort Concho Officers Quarters No. 5. She spent her early, married life in Grape Creek and Christoval on the Tillery Dairy Farms. During the war era, Gladys worked in the Oregon Shipping Yards as a welder. She and her husband Cleo later owned and operated a 200-acre commercial truck farming business on 47th Street and near Mereta and Eola. She enjoyed the long hours selling vegetables to the public and catching up on the latest news. Idle hands are the devils workshop was one favorite saying as she continued to shell pecans by hand on into her nineties. Gladys was a 50-year member of the Texas Extension Homemakers Association and was well noted for her homemade hot rolls. She had a keen mind for business and kept abreast of social issues, always asking, Whats going on downtown? Like her father, Gladys told lots of old stories about the good ole days when modern conveniences (and computers) were lacking. Like her mother, she was boss. She was a longtime member of the Lakeview Christian Church and maintained her faith through the difficult years of the flood, wartime depression, fire and the tornado of 1953. Gladys was preceded in death by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 43 years in 1971; her second son, Leon Tillery on April 8, 1990; a brother, Edward Raburn; and a sister, Mary Edgington. Survivors include two sons, Cleo G. Tillery Jr. and his wife, Lavonne, of Plano and David Tillery of San Angelo; three daughters, Dr. Lillian T. Linebarger of Argyle, Linda Tillery of Miles and Anna Tillery of San Angelo; and daughter-in-law, Johnnie Tillery Tate of San Angelo. She later met her lifelong partner and adoring husband, Howard Hamilton. Howard was a professional cowboy from Winters, Texas, who was stationed at the Naval base in Rhode Island. As fate would have it, they met at a USO Club when both tried their best at polka dancing. They began their married life in Colorado Springs, Colo., in the ranch and dairy business. Amidst her farming chores, Lovell found time to teach piano lessons to the local schoolchildren. Later, they relocated to Kerrville, Texas, where Lovell fell in love with the many Texas wildflowers that she welcomed each spring. The couple retired to San Angelo. Howard became the popular neighborhood bike repairman. Mrs. Hamilton gained notoriety for mentoring successful piano students and for an endless supply of her special homemade chocolate-chip cookies. In her later years, a neighbor often recalled seeing her in the wee hours of the night baking her famous cookies made of real butter and chocolate chips and preparing music plans for the next day. An early-arriving student often found her nurturing her beautiful flower garden in the back yard prior to lessons.
