Robert Massie Funeral Home JOE SAPPINGTON SMITH After a lengthy illness, Joe Sappington Smith eased from his mortal life on earth to his Heavenly Father on May 10, 2002. He looked forward to sharing eternity with His Savior and his loved ones that went before him. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, Katie and an older brother, Landon and his wife, Euty Smith. Service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at Johnsons Funeral Home with interment in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, Texas. Dad, as he was lovingly known to all, was born on Nov. 22, 1920, to Lillie Belle Wigley and Early Jackson Smith in Windom, Texas. The family later moved to Abilene where he held many jobs as a youth. Always a hard worker, he worked as a shoeshiner in a barbershop. He delivered telegrams for Western Union. He continued until his bicycle fell apart. He worked the soda fountain in a drug store. He worked as an electrician wiring new homes. After a brief tour in the United States Navy, he returned to the oil field. He worked in the oil fields all over Texas until he was forced into medical retirement in 1982. He worked for many oil companies, but his longest employment was working for Tucker Oil when he had to retire. Dad became known to all that knew him as Mr. Fix-it. He took great pride and such joy in helping all family, friends and even strangers in repairing anything they couldnt figure out. He had a mind that seemed to just know and understand how they worked. He took great joy in repairing old clocks. He repaired many clocks from the 1800s. He had to make the parts since they were no longer available. The thing that most intrigued and excited him was that he had to make the tools to make the parts. We never yet found anything he couldnt fix. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and the many pawnshops he visited so frequently. Joe is survived by his children, Joe Lee Smith and wife, Jan, of Big Spring, Danny Smith and wife, Linda, of Brazoria, Stanley Smith of Brazoria, Brenda Steen of San Angelo and Ronnie Palmer and wife, Margarita, of Big Spring; his grandchildren, Kerry Smith, Brian Smith, Bryan Smith and wife, Joyce, Beth Wilke and husband, John, Shawn Clark and wife, Felicia, Lance Clark and Cody Steen, David Smith and Marga Senzig and husband, Eric. The family wishes memorials for Dad Smith be made to VistaCare Hospice or the Heart Association.
