Johnsons Funeral Home GEORGE HILLMAN CROWNOVER A lifetime of caring, compassion and love came to a close early Wednesday, May 15, 2002, with the death of George Hillman Crownover Jr., 78, of San Angelo. George was born June 25, 1923, in Los Angeles, Calif., where his family had moved in search of work, but he spent most of his life in West Texas, first in Abilene as a young boy and then in San Angelo. The bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941 prompted him to join the Army Air Corps a month later at the age of 18, and ten months later his mother was pinning on his wings in a ceremony in San Antonio. In less than five months, he was flying the hump in India for his country. His nearly four years of military service had a profound impact on his life. Nearly a decade after his initial enlistment in the Army Air Corps, George served another two-year tour of duty in the Air Force. In July 1945, while stationed at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma, George married Wilma Faye McGlothlin of San Angelo. His love and devotion for her has been affirmed over the past 57 years in many ways, including his practice of always having a fresh rose for her at the breakfast table of their home. Together they raised three daughters, Cathy, Lois Ann and Georgia, and have served as a center of the extended family of sons-in-law, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1948, George earned a degree in agriculture from Texas A&M University and returned to San Angelo to begin what would become a distinguished business career in San Angelo. That career began at Angelo Truck and Tractor, a company that he and Wilma Faye would eventually purchase in 1962. He served over the years in many positions, leading up to serving as its president and owner. He was elected to the Board of Directors of San Angelo National Bank in 1973, and a decade later was part of a group that founded Tom Green National Bank and served as its first president when it opened in 1984. He moved to the chairman position two years later and served in that capacity until the bank was sold in 1994. During his business career, George embraced the opportunities to serve his community in many leadership positions and his involvement had a profound impact in many areas. He served as chairman of what are now the Chamber of Commerce and United Way, as well as the Stock Show and Rodeo Association and the Miss Wool of America Pageant. For years his leadership abilities were felt in these and many other organizations in which he filled various positions of responsibility. He was a past president and longtime member of the Downtown Lions Club and Tom Green County Library Board. His influence and contributions were felt with such diverse institutions as Angelo State University, St. Johns Hospital, the Tom Green County Tuberculosis Association, and many others. George was a man of great integrity whose life was one of commitment to service to others. George was a lifetime learner, and his avid reading habits contributed to that passion. He read at least five newspapers per day, and as many magazines and periodicals as he could get his hands on. His interests were diverse, and in his retirement he had more time to pursue those interests and satisfy his insatiable curiosity. There was nothing he would not try to do, and his passion to work with his hands leaves his family with wonderful remembrances of his talents and passions. Whether it is the monogrammed silver buttons on a suit, a bronze sculpture, a beautiful ceramic pot he constructed, or paintings in multiple mediums, the evidence of his creativity, talent and passion lives on for his family and friends. He even learned once how to knit his own socks. George left this world a better place than how he found it, a principle he believed in deeply. He did it in a very unassuming manner and by focusing on doing good things for other people. He was a dedicated son, husband and father, and was admired by those whose lives he touched. He will be missed deeply by his family and many friends. Crownover is survived by his wife, Wilma Faye Crownover of San Angelo; three daughters, Cathy Irons and her husband, Dick, of Austin, Lois Ann Klattenhoff and her husband, Wayne, of Miles and Georgia Edwards and her husband, Sam, of Midland; four sisters, Dorothy Weston of Plano, Doris Henderson of Columbus, Ohio, and Dona Davis and Frances Pinson, both of San Angelo; seven grandchildren, Coye Beason Irons and wife, Amy, of Keller, Grant Hillman Irons of Hunt, Catherine Hailey Irons of Austin, Colin Wayne Klattenhoff of Miles, Carlee Ann Klattenhoff of College Station, George Samuel Edwards of San Angelo and Robert Alexander Edwards of Midland; and two great-grandchildren, Tanner Rhett Irons and Olivia Kate Irons, both of Keller. Services celebrating Georges life on earth will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 17, at the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jack Grafa, Monte Noelke, Bill Sykes, Freddie Brooks, Bobby Eckert, Todd Huckabee, Hudson Russell, Denzil Brashear and Roy Kidd. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Elam, Harold Odum and John Mathewson. The family has established the George Hillman Crownover Scholarship Fund at Angelo State University.
