He dedicated a large portion of his life and time to helping 4-H members and fellow ranchers with their Angora Goats and mohair. He was a Texas Angora Goat Raisers Association judge for many years and loved working with the youngsters, teaching them how to grade mohair. During shearing season you could find him at neighboring ranches grading sack after sack of mohair or just lending a helping hand. Many of his friends knew his love for welding and building and have barns, pens and bump gates made by Crawford throughout the surrounding counties. Crawford also was very well known for his cooking. Everyone loved his goat meat and brisket but most of all, his famous camp bread. He catered for many years, cooking for hundreds of people and gatherings. Most will remember him for the Fourth of July in Rocksprings, with all the other men early in the morning starting the fire and getting the meat on. In the earlier years, he was a very active member in the American Legion which promoted the Fourth of July Rodeo in Rocksprings. One of Crawford’s pastimes away from the ranch was spent at Rough Canyon on Lake Amistad. There he made many life-long friends, catching catfish and spending late nights frying fish to feed all whom would come eat it. He was active in this small community and ran the Marina for a time. Crawford had many extended families. One of the more recent passions was his participation in the Texas Sheep Dog Association. After getting his first Border Collie, he became addicted and learned all about training them himself. With the help of the friends he made at all the dog trials, he learned to train and trade the dogs he grew to love so much. His family never saw any other breed of dog with Crawford and never would. He spent his whole life instilling in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the values of hard work, responsibility and friendship. Burial Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rocksprings, Texas. Rosary is scheduled for Monday evening, Aug. 5, at the church in Rocksprings. Arrangements are by Nelson Funeral Home of Rocksprings. James was born July 2, 1916, in Lampasas County, Texas, to Fred and Mazie Wittenburg. At an early age, James and his parents moved to Rocksprings, and he had resided there ever since, graduating from Rocksprings High School. He attended St. Edwards University in Austin and graduated from Sul Ross State College in 1939. He then attended Texas A&M University for one year before returning to Rocksprings, where he lived and ranched since that time. James married Ruth Ellen Hemphill of Coleman County on Sept. 21, 1946, in Coleman, Texas. His life revolved around his family, ranching, service to the sheep and goat industry, the community of Rocksprings and his church. He was a past president of the Texas Sheep & Goat Raisers Association and received the prestigious Fred T. Earwood Memorial Trophy in July 1990 for his outstanding service to his community and the sheep and goat producers of Texas. He was a president and director of the American Goat Breeders Association, the Texas Angora Goat Raisers Association, and a past director of the Mohair Council of America. He served on the Wool Committee for the American Sheep Producers Association and was a member of the American Wool Growers Association. He also received the Sul Ross State University Distinguished Alumni Award. When James reached 70 years old, his wife Ruth suggested that he retire. His response was that ranching had never been work but was his hobby and always had been. His first ranching love was his Rambouillet sheep with his Angora goats a close second. He raised for sale Rambouillet rams and Angora billies and enjoyed ranch sales to his many customers over the years. He especially enjoyed the many friendships he formed with the other industry leaders in the Sheep & Goat Raisers Association and Mohair Council. James also enjoyed his many friends and neighbors in Rocksprings through his association with his church and ranch work. Through the years, he was blessed with hardworking and loyal employees including Ignacio and Carmen Coronado, Francisco Ortiz, Bill Seales and Jose Franco. James was also especially fond of his many Wittenburg and Buttrill relatives that originated from Lometa, Texas. James was always straightforward and conveyed both dignity and simplicity. He was a man of few words, more of a thinker than a talker — but when he did speak, people listened. He was a devout Catholic and very much involved with his wife and children. James is survived by his wife, Ruth Wittenburg of San Angelo and Rocksprings; a daughter, Jimmie Ruth Evans and husband, Dick Evans, of San Antonio; a son, Charlie Wittenburg of San Angelo; a daughter, Marylee Wittenburg of San Angelo; a grandson, Tres Evans and his wife, Elaine Evans; and a granddaughter, Lee Marie Evans. Pallbearers will be Edward Gonzales, Eddie Franco, Edward Davis, John Davis, Lindsey Davis, Jimmy Hemphill, Dr. Joe Pat Hemphill, Dr. Robert King, Morrison Carpenter, Bobby Cottle and Stan Cottle. Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Campbell, Hayden G. Haby, D.L. Cloudt, Frank O. Cloudt, Dolph Briscoe, Bill Seales and Carol Cottle. The family wishes to express a special thanks to all of the staff of the Meadow Creek Nursing Home. The family requests that memorials be made to the charity of choice including the Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, the West Texas Boys Ranch and other similar charities in the area. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
