Billie Jean Higdon, 72, of San Angelo died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at her home after a lengthy illness. Billie Jean was born May 8, 1930, in Menard, Texas, to Tom and Bertha Clark. She married Lloyd Higdon in August of 1951, and traveled the world as a Navy wife and mother until their retirement in San Angelo in 1966. Though Billie was primarily a homemaker, she often took part-time jobs when she wanted to save for something special for her children. Once her children were grown, she began working full-time in the radiology department in Shannon Hospital and retired from there in 1989 in order to join her daughter, Debbie, in Florida. While in Florida, Billie continued to work in medical records while spending all of her free time on the beach, collecting seashells and new friends during her many walks. Billie retired fully in 1991, when she and Debbie returned to San Angelo. She continued to reside with her daughter until her death. Everyone who knew Billie Jean will remember how she loved to laugh and make others laugh. She had a wonderfully quick wit and always had a new joke to share. Nothing made her happier than having her home full of family and the friends of her children, ensuring that everyone had a good time filled with fun and laughter. In addition, Billie had a great love of literature. She was an avid reader and instilled the same love in her children by sharing trips to the library with them throughout their childhood. She opened her children’s eyes to the world and the possibilities it held, and supported them as they made their way. This was just one of her many gifts to her children and she lived her life with generosity and selflessness. Billie Jean’s survivors include her children, Thomas Higdon and wife, Menyon, of Lubbock and Debbie Higdon of San Angelo; as well as the two new angels in her life, grandchildren, Nathan and Amanda of Lubbock. She also is survived by brother, Tom Clark of Balmorrhea; and sisters, Polly Long, Louella Teague and Alta Putzel, all of San Angelo, and Jo Savage of Odessa. Billie Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Carl Clark of Uvalde; and as well as sisters, Minnie Gobel of Brady and Lucille Beddingfield of Sinton. The family wishes to extend its thanks to Hospice of San Angelo for their help in keeping Billie Jean at home as her illness progressed. Billie also asked that a special thank you be extended to Dr. Tamara Noack and her medical assistant, Lela Batten for the many years of care they provided to her, doing their best to maintain the highest quality of life possible for her. A memorial service for Billie Jean’s family and friends will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23, in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo, Texas. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LINDA L HULSEY Johnson’s Funeral Home Linda L.
