DUGE YATES Kerbow Funeral Home ELDORADO — D.T. “Duge” Yates was born Oct. 19, 1915, in Schleicher County on the Leslie H. Jones Ranch near Fort McKavett. He was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church in Eldorado. He loved singing in the choir, which was obvious by his head nodding and his swaying back and forth. The Lord took him on Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, and he is now rocking in heaven. Duge was preceded in death by two brothers, Wendell Yates and J.T. Yates; and three sisters, Lorene Scott, Vivian Love and Melvin Burleson. He is survived by two brothers, Harold Yates and wife, Ozelle, of San Antonio and Earl Yates and wife, Sarah, of Eldorado; and by a special friend, Noweita (Sis) Briggs of Eldorado. Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews who changed his name to “Dugie.” Duge began first grade at Fort McKavett Elementary School. Later he attended Rudd, Tisdale and Cliff Rural Schools in Schleicher County before transferring to Eldorado High School. He was the first man in Schleicher County to be drafted for selective service in World War II. He proudly served his country for six years. He was awarded many honors, which include Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Duge spent many happy hours with the Chamber Pride Committee beautifying the streets and parks of Eldorado. He had the heart of a lion but the stubbornness of a mule when it came to his special projects. Not surgeries nor illnesses nor even droughts would slow him down. His masterful skill of flower gardening helped turn Eldorado into “A City of Gold.” Not only did he love flowers, but he was also a great sports enthusiast. He supported and encouraged many generations of Eagles in track, tennis, basketball, football and baseball. He not only knew the athletes’ names, but also their numbers and positions. He even had a little advice every once in a while for the coaches and referees. For his “Green Thumb” talents and his dedication to sports, Duge was honored with many awards. He was selected “Fan of the Year” many times by the GGA and “E” Club. He was honored by Ken Newman with a lifetime membership into the Eagle Booster Club. In 1992, he was elected Pioneer Family Representative, and in 1993 he was elected Senior Man of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce. In 1994, the Chamber also elected him as Man of the Year. He was a faithful volunteer for all of Schleicher County. It’s fitting that his labor on earth has ended on this Labor Day weekend, but his legacy will continue to live for years to come. Thank you, Dugie, for all you gave so unselfishly for so many. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, at the First Baptist Church in Eldorado. Burial will follow in the Eldorado Cemetery. She died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, at 3:35 p.m. in Big Lake. She was 87. Maurine married James Lee “Mike” Werst Jr. in 1932. She and Mike lived in several towns as a young married couple while he worked for various newspapers. They moved to Big Lake in the spring of 1948 and joined other young couples as town builders. An energetic and outgoing woman, Maurine knew no strangers. She was a true trailblazer. In addition to her society column for The Big Lake Wildcat, she wrote a very humorous, often-puzzling column of observations of local life. She and Mike, along with other couples, were moving forces in the local Presbyterian church, Stiles dance club and Big Lake Golf Association, of which they were charter members. Maurine was the last surviving charter member of Reagan Garden Club and counted its members as among her very best friends. She was never shy about prodding local participation for community improvements. She also worked as a volunteer in local politics as an election judge for many years. A big part of Maurine’s life revolved around Reagan Garden Club. She campaigned to pull together resources for the downtown park to replace the rubble of the old Big Lake Hotel. She continued to enjoy her flowers and vegetable gardens in her later years. Maurine was an avid and passionate bridge player. Social activities would not be complete without mention of Maurine’s dedication to become a Life Master at Duplicate Bridge, a goal she achieved in the early 1990s. One of Maurine’s frequent sayings was that she thought of life as a grand and glorious adventure. She certainly had many. He was born in Richland Springs, Texas, on Dec. 30, 1909, to John Elmer and Mary Teresa Gaddy. Wilburn (W.N.) lived a successful life by any measurement. Athletic from an early age, he was a star performer on his Richland Springs High School track and football teams. Then, following graduation, he raised and sold watermelons and sweet potatoes to finance his tuition at John Tarleton State until the Great Depression forced him to leave college and find a job teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in Coke County. It was there that he met and married Modena Black, who would give birth to his three children and remains his loving wife for the ensuing 21 years until her death in 1954. W.N. earned a bachelor of science degree from Howard Payne University and a master’s of education from Sul Ross State, and served as a high school principal for many years, initially for the Bronte Independent School District in Coke County and then for Grandfalls-Royalty Independent School District in Ward County. During his tenure at Grandfalls, he wed Luci Weddle, a fellow teacher in the school system. W.N. and Luci retired from education in 1972, to build a home and a new life in Ballinger, Texas, where they enjoyed the company of their many friends, several thousand games of bridge and “80,” and some wonderful home cooked meals. A consummate outdoorsman, W.N., during various periods in his life, pursued his love of hunting, tennis, golf, fishing and more fishing. No longer satisfied to drop a hook in the placid waters of Texas, he built a cabin high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colorado, to pit his skills against the elusive rainbow trout of the icy and rough Conejos River. There, he and Lucy spent more than 30 summers, surrounded by caring neighbors and revolving door of Texas visitors. After Luci’s death, W.N. remained in Ballinger, tending his bountiful gardens in the spring, watching his beloved Texas Rangers in the summer and cheering for the Dallas Cowboys in the fall. When his eyesight diminished, he was guided by a succession of three lovely ladies, housekeepers and companions, Cheryl Warren, Nancy Foreman and Wanda Booe. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary; his stepmother, Beulah; his wives, Dena and Luci; and his son, Reg. W.N. is survived by his daughters, Kitty Reeves of Odessa and Sherry and Jim Coombes of Austin; two stepsons, Bill Weddle and his wife, Star, of Bastrop and Mike Weddle and his wife, Angelina, of El Paso; 12 grandchildren; 14 great- grandchildren; his best friend and neighbor, Click Butts; his wonderful friends, Clara Patton and Connie Bronaugh; and his faithful poodle, Sam. In life, W.N. wore many hats. He was a fair an impartial school administrator, a loving husband and father, a devoted Baptist and Lion, an unsurpassed gardener and a breakfast cook extraordinaire. To be sure, if there are meals in Heaven, the angels are lining up for an early morning repast of his homemade biscuits and gravy with eggs over easy. The family will be receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at Rains-Seale Funeral Home.
