Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Elmwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Johnny Robertson officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the funeral home. Mr. Saverance was born Aug. 25, 1915, to Jess and Annie Saverance in Goldsboro, Texas. He attended school in Goldsboro and Novice, Texas. He married Wauree Bates on Feb. 29, 1936, in Coleman, Texas. Mr. Saverance worked in ranching and as a heavy machine operator until his retirement in 1980. After retirement he and Wauree moved to Clyde from Coleman. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clyde; and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. Mark attended schools in San Angelo and graduated from high school at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, N.M. From there he attended Texas Tech. Mark lived on his sailboat in Port Aransas. His boat, the Jedi, was the love of his life. Mark is survived by his mother and stepfather, Sara and John Shepperson; his sons, Royce and Alex McGarr; a stepbrother, John Shepperson; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Ben Hubert officiating. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EVONA RITCHIE Johnson’s Funeral Home Evona Ritchie, 81, of San Angelo died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, in Shannon Medical Center. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, in Georgetown Cemetery in Pottsboro, Texas. Evona was born June 19, 1921, in Coke County, Texas, to Jessie and Cordia Liles. She was a resident of San Angelo for eight years and a member of Trinity Methodist Church. She was an assembly worker in an aircraft factory during World War II and a beautician. Evona was married to O.E. Ritchie on April 1948. He preceded her in death on March 24, 1993. Survivors include one brother, Horace Liles and wife, Ann, of Garland; one sister, Jean Wojtek of San Angelo; three nephews, Tony Liles and wife, Cally, of Richardson, Larry Wojtek and wife, Kelly, of San Angelo and Jerry Wojtek of San Angelo; three great nieces; and two great-nephews. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RUDOLPH PAUL FRANKE Rains-Seale Funeral Home BALLINGER — Rudolph Paul Franke, 93, was called to his heavenly home Monday morning, Sept. 16, 2002, surrounded by his family. He was born April 8, 1909, in Olfen, Texas, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Schnurbusch) Franke. The Franke family moved to Rowena soon after his birth where he attended St. Joseph School. On June 28, 1938, he married Lucille Lange in Olfen. He was a lifetime farmer in the Rowena community and a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he enjoyed saying the rosary every day at noon. Rudolph served as church choir director for many years. He was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Knights of Columbus and the last surviving charter member of Bishop Forrest Council No. 2636. He was also a charter member of the Rowena Volunteer Fire Department and the Rowena Lions Club. In his younger years, Rudy enjoyed participating in the Parish Drama Club, playing the trombone in the Rowena Brass Band and was a great storyteller. His greatest delight was being surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rowena. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, with the Rev. Prasad Gallela officiating. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Rudolph was preceded in death by two sons, Mike and Timmy Franke; and a daughter, Mary Joan Lange. He enjoyed a full and active life. Leroy was born in Winters, Texas, on April 16, 1939, to Carl and Addie Brooks. He married Betty Jo Blackledge in 1958. They lived in Abilene and moved to the Austin area in 1971. He retired to Tow, Texas, where he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tow. Leroy loved the outdoors and was a skilled hunter and avid fisherman. He had a lifelong passion for stock car racing and an undeniable talent for driving. He won eleven late model championships during his racing career from 1965 to 1982 and thrilled race fans everywhere he competed. Leroy was a firm, soft-spoken, compassionate and understanding man whose intentions were never questioned, and whose presence alone commanded respect. He will always be loved and remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him and sharing his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Jo; daughter, Robbie Brooks, and friend, Wendel Laws, of Tow; son, Terry Brooks and wife, Kathy, of Austin; grandchildren, Mandi Prather, Ami Rodriguez and husband, Daniel, and Katy Brooks and great- grandchildren, Cayla and Shawn, all of Austin; brother, Dallas Johnson and wife, Valerie, and their daughters, Melanie, Kindra and Dixie, of Robert Lee; father-in-law, C.J. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, at the same church, with Ira Kendrick officiating. Mrs. Malone was born July 15, 1921, in rural Hill County, Texas, to Sandy and Bettie Jane Jamerson Damron. She was reared in Texas and Arizona, where her family helped build Hoover Dam and numerous irrigation canals. She inherited “True Grit” from her very early American family who was driven by their desire for more of God and the thrill of always moving west. Myrtle found more of God when she received God’s gift of the Holy Ghost at a young age. She married Roy Lee Malone in Ballinger in 1939, and was by his side until his death 52 years later. Myrtle was a homemaker and cared for many local children in her home. Survivors include two sons, Robert Malone and wife, Fracie, of Oklahoma City and Kenneth Malone and wife, Debbie, of Ballinger; one sister, Edna Hall of Union, Maine; two brothers, Larnce Damron of Alvarado and Roland Damron of Houston; two sisters-in-law and friends, Daisy Jones of Ballinger and Mary Bell Malone of Fort Worth; granddaughter, Sandie Owens of Abilene; grandsons, Patrick and Chris Malone, of Oklahoma, and Thomas Malone of Ballinger; and two great-grandsons, Caleb and Joshua Owens, of Abilene. Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 16, in Pioneer Memorial Park. Mrs. Sudberry was born Aug. 11, 1919, to Ike and Wilhelmina Musil. She moved to San Angelo at the age of sixteen, where she married Raymond McGinty in 1940. During the next ten years, she gave birth to six children. In the 1950s, Hulda attended and graduated top of her class of licensed vocational nursing training at Shannon Hospital. Hulda worked at Shannon and St. John’s Hospital until her retirement in 1982. She was married to George Stewart in 1971 until his death in 1976. Hulda was married to J.C. Sudberry of Abilene in 1981 until his death in 2000. She is survived by her children, Pat Derring and spouse, Tommy Broadway, Janice Logston, Judy Ward, Geri Howell, Cathy Lowery and spouse, Marshall Lowery, and Ray McGinty and spouse, Carol McGinty; a total of 18 grandchildren; 28 great- grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by two of her sisters, Alma Phillips and Edna Musil. Virginia was born Oct. 5, 1922, in Emory, Texas, to Annie Cox Allen and Gus Watts Allen. She attended schools in Tankersley, San Angelo and Dallas, and graduated from San Angelo College. Virginia married Reynold Reed Scott on Dec. 13, 1941, in Yuma, Ariz. After World War II, they returned to San Angelo to raise their family. Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Reynold, Feb. 26, 1988; her parents; and one brother, Gus Watts Allen Jr. She is survived by a daughter, Paula Wojtek and husband, Marlow, of San Angelo; a son, Randy Scott and wife, Margaret, of Highland Village; granddaughters, Stacy Wojtek Coulter and husband, Kayne, of Richmond, Shannan Wojtek Martin and husband, Mitch, of Allen, Robyn Scott and soon-to-be husband, Clay Bonner, both of Dallas, and Mindy Scott of Lubbock; great-grandchildren, Cameron and Kyle Coulter of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews. As the administrative assistant to the president of Angelo State University, she served under several different university presidents in her 29 years of employment. Upon her retirement in 1983, a proclamation by the City of San Angelo stated: “Whereas, she served as a steady force in the rapidly changing history of the once regional junior college that has become a highly regarded senior college, creating and maintaining dignity within the administrative offices through her accuracy, courtesy and leadership. Many Angelo State University staff, faculty and most especially students, will remember her for the influence she had on their lives.” Virginia was also active in her community, serving on the Board of Directors of the ASU Ex-Students Association and a member of the Angelo State Women’s Club. She donated a building, which serves as the permanent home for Christmas in April, and later she became a member of the Board of Directors. For the past 14 years, she was an active volunteer at San Angelo Community Medical Center, serving on the Ethics Committee, and until August of this year, she could be found working in the auxiliary gift shop each Monday afternoon. Virginia was also an active member of Southland Baptist Church and the Friendship Class. She coordinated Meals for the Elderly delivery volunteers two months each year, and served in many different volunteer positions at the church. Family and friends were very special to Virginia, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their friends, to whom she was affectionately known as “Digi.” Virginia’s family wishes to extend special thanks to her many close friends who have been so supportive during the past few months. Also, they thank the many dedicated caretakers at Regency House and Shannon Hospital, with special thanks to the nursing staff, Dr. Hughston and Dr. Ayass, who provided such loving care during her illness. Mrs. O’Connor was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Superior, Wis., to Sigford and Ellen Olund. She attended schools in Superior and graduated from Central High School and Wisconsin Business College. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. O’Connor worked for a radio station in Duluth, Minn., and then for Wisconsin Typewriter, a business supply store. Mrs. O’Connor married James Robert Thede, a childhood friend, on Dec. 29, 1945, in Minneapolis, Minn. Mr. Thede was in the Army Air Corps and together they traveled to assignments in Illinois, South Dakota and North Carolina. In the late 1940s, they were assigned to the Panama Canal Zone, where Mrs. O’Connor began her career with the United States Civil Service. She worked for the Civil Service at their subsequent assignments to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine Islands, Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas, Army HQ in Frankfurt, Germany, and Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas. Mrs. O’Connor retired as secretary for the wing commander at Goodfellow Air Force Base in 1980. Following her retirement, Mrs. O’Connor moved to Horseshoe Bay, Texas. In 1985, she moved to DeLand, Fla., to be near her sister and other relatives. She returned to San Angelo in April 2002 due to illness. Mrs. O’Connor’s avocations were gold, bowling, card games, dancing, crocheting, knitting, shopping and gardening. She had a lively wit, liked a good joke and was always pleasant in both her personal and public life. She had a loving and generous nature, quick to forgive and slow to chastise. While living in Florida, Mrs. O’Connor was an active volunteer in her retirement community, working at the gift shop, medical center and on several committees. She especially enjoyed visiting with friends during dinner at the community’s dining room and attending Sunday vesper services. She was a member of Park Heights Baptist Church while living in San Angelo, and subsequently, a member of the First United Methodist Church in Orange City, Fla. Mrs. O’Connor was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Jeanette Budina; her husbands, James Thede, Russell Ethridge and William O’Connor; and nine aunts. Dale was born Jan. 31, 1933, in Gorden County, Ga., to Garland and Gracie West. He grew up in Gorden County and graduated from Fairmount High School. In 1952, he went into the Air Force and was stationed at Webb Air Force Base in Big Spring, Texas, where he met his wife, Myrle West. They were married in 1954, and he was discharged in 1955. He was a painter until 1985 when he retired. Dale and Myrle moved to San Angelo from Lamesa in 1965. He was preceded in death by his son, Keith West; his parents; four brothers, Dean, James, Glenn and Lenell West; and by three sisters, Catherine Crow, Marion McBee and Helen West. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Myrle West of San Angelo; daughters, Teresa Barrows and husband, Ken, of San Angelo and Mary Street of Lubbock; five grandchildren, David West, James Barrows and wife, Erica, John Barrows, Haley Street and Penny Street; two brothers, Noel and Clifford West of Fairmont, Ga.; and four sisters, Nera Stone and husband, H.B., Carolyn Malloy, Linda and husband, Jerry Maulden, and Sandra and Ronnie Scoggins of Fairmont, Ga. Memorial service was at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Polk Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Garrett and the Rev. Alan Williamson officiating. Mr. Cherry was born in Coulterville, Ill. He moved to San Angelo in 1914, where he graduated from high school in 1926. He attended Schreiner Institute in Kerrville and later attended the University of Texas at Austin. He married Elsie Amacker in 1930. He passed the CPA exam in 1941. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he volunteered in the Army and was awarded a direct commission of first lieutenant and was separated in 1946 as a major. After returning to San Angelo, he founded the firm of Cherry, Eckert and Story. He sold the practice to his partners in 1968 and moved to Monte Vista, Colo. He moved to Amarillo in 1988. In 1989, he became the first recipient of the Jake Freeze Award given by the San Angelo Chapter of CPAs for his service to the accounting profession. The VISTA program of the IRS was one of his volunteer interests. He continued his volunteer involvement in various capacities until the time of his death. Novelle was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Runnels County, Texas, to John and Annie Holley. She was a retired coffee shop owner/operator and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW for many years. Novelle was married to Arthur C. Pasley Sr. in Dec. 1942, in Austin, Texas. He preceded her in death in September of 1992. One daughter, Paula Barbee also preceded her in death. Survivors include sons, Arthur C. Pasley and wife, Glenda, of Carrollton, and James Kemp and wife, Janie, of Clovis, Calif.; daughter, Karen Teague Lukowiak and husband, Michael, of Pflugerville; son-in-law, Calvin Barbee of San Angelo; one sister, Reba Tabor of Robert Lee; brother, J.M. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Pool was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Menard County. She was a homemaker and a member of London Baptist Church. Pearl married Ervin A. Pearl April 10, 1926, in Menard. He preceded her in death in 1966. Survivors include a daughter, Clara D. Williamson and her husband, Charles, of San Angelo; son, Aubrey Pool and his wife, Carol, of Chico; and two brothers, T.C. Hight and Leonard Hight and his wife, Alene, all of London, Texas.
