Schwertner, 77, of Miles passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in Temple, Texas, while attending the Texas Early Day Tractor and Engine Show. Ernest was born Sept. 14, 1925, on the home place north of Miles to Albert and Annie (Ernst) Schwertner. He married Evelyn McBurnett on Oct. 26, 1948, in Rowena at the St. Joseph Rectory. Ernest served in the United States Air Force in the 1940s. He was a retired farmer, a member of the St. Thomas Catholic Church, the Miles Young Farmers, Willow Creek Water District and served on the board of directors of the Miles Preservation Authority. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Rowena Hermanson’s Lodge, Knights of Columbus, the Texas Early Day Tractor and Engine Show of Temple and the Hill Country Antique Tractor and Engine Club of Stonewall. Ernest was noted for building a replica of the 1892 Froelich Traction Engine from farm equipment. He attended many tractor shows across the countryside, showing his engine. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Vera Simpson; and seven brothers-in-law. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Evelyn of Miles; four sisters, Augusta and George Smith of Lubbock, Leona and Leroy Doritik of San Angelo, Lula Marecek of Rowena and Josephine and Bubba Gentry of Miles; extended family, Jerry McBurnett of San Angelo, Billy and Joan Schwertner of Miles, Jason Gentry of Dallas and Randy Gentry of Miles; and many nieces and nephews. Clarence Kelly officiating. Mrs. Raiborn died Oct. 5, 2002, in Kilgore. Mrs. Raiborn was born Jan. 31, 1905, to Will and Mary Agnes Anderson in Lubbock, Texas. She moved to San Angelo in 1918 and lived on her parent’s ranch located in the Twin Mountains. In 1925, she married Frank Raiborn in San Angelo. Mrs. Raiborn lived in Fairfield, Ill., Joinerville, Texas, and then moved to Kilgore. She was a member of the Forrest Home Baptist Church in Kilgore. Mrs. Raiborn was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Raiborn in 1979; and her grandson, Steve Duncan in 1999. Mrs. Raiborn is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Eloise and Herman Duncan of Kilgore, Elaine and Bill Hamon of Tyler, Texas, Joan and Charlie Cation of Eddy, Texas, and Jan and Butch Honeycutt of Mexia, Texas; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Hitt, 71, of San Angelo, Texas, died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, in a local hospital. He was born Jan. 8, 1931, in Jane Lew, W.Va. Clifford was a veteran of the Korean War and was a banker. He married Charlene Burke on June 2, 1952, in San Angelo, Texas, and he was a member of First Baptist Church in Denver City, Texas. Mrs. Thigpen was born June 23, 1919, in Blanket, Texas, to E.L. and Emma Wilkinson. She married Earl David Thigpen in February of 1950 in San Angelo. She worked as a bookkeeper for Merchant Freight Lines for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Tennison Baptist Church. Survivors include a sister, Earline Leigh of Ennis, Texas; two nieces, Ann Jungmeyer of Houston and Sandie Childress of Robertsdale, Ala.; and several other nieces and nephews. Cox passed from this earthly life after a lengthy illness on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in a local hospital. Ben was born on Aug. 23, 1921, in Star, Texas, to Ben and Vera Knowles Cox. Ben served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II, Korea and in the Vietnam conflict. He retired after 26 years of dedicated service. Ben loved sports and fishing. He was a member of Belmore Baptist Church and was a Mason. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, O.Z. Cox. Survived by his wife of 60 years, Ina F. Cox; daughter, Joyce Baldwin and husband, Steve; son, Gary Cox; grandchildren, Amy and Austin Baldwin; brother, J.C. Moore, who preceded her in death. Service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church in San Angelo with the Rev. John Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Moore was born to Horace and Clarice Oliver on Sept. 5, 1924, in Ballinger. She graduated from high school in Van Horn and received her teaching degrees from Sul Ross State University where she began her teaching career at 18 years old. Bobbie Dee and D.C. Moore were married on April 8, 1944, and were life-long companions until his death in 1985. As an educator in Marfa, Valentine, Mertzon and San Angelo, Bobbie touched and positively influenced the lives of many students she taught during her 40-year career. She was considered an “outstanding teacher” by her students and colleagues. Mrs. Moore demanded the best from and had high expectations for all her students. After retiring from the teaching profession in 1983, she devoted much of her time, energy and service to the Sierra Vista United Methodist Church. A mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Bobbie will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her. Her church and church friends were a source of strength and support and she was the same for them. She was truly “a lady” in every sense of the word. She is survived by her son, Terry Moore; her grandchildren, Bethany and Travis Moore; her sister, Terrelene Bridgford; sister-in-law, Yvonne Oliver; nieces and nephews, Judy Casley, Forrest Oliver, Clyde Oliver, Derek Bridgford and Dershie Kurtz. Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother, Horace Oliver Jr.; and her sister, LaMarylis Breeding. Flowers are welcome. He was a devout member of the Seventh Street Baptist Church for over 30 years, serving as a deacon for a number of years. Henry loved fishing, quail hunting and most of all, gardening. Henry would start looking at seed catalogs in early winter to start planning on what to grow and which seeds to buy for the spring planting. It gave Henry great joy to sell his homegrown produce in town, especially his cantaloupes. Henry was preceded in death by Lydia; his parents; his brother, Jesse Edward Jr.; and his sister, Virginia Murphy. Floy had been a resident of San Angelo for the past 10 years, moving here from Seminole, Texas, where she and husband, T.J. Brewer were self-employed until retiring. She was the sixth child born to Ervin and Tiny Sanders of Dade County, Mo., on Aug. 21, 1908. She often told the story of when she was a young girl and the family moved from Missouri to Arkansas with their two dogs “You Know” and “I Know.” While visiting her brother in Oklahoma, she met and later married Lloyd Eugene Paxton on June 17, 1929, in Wewoka, Okla. Together, they had two sons. Lloyd preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1951, in Denver City, Texas. On Dec. 25, 1954, in Plains, Texas, Floy and T.J. Brewer were married. They had been married 43 years when he passed away in San Angelo. Welcoming her home will be all of her family and grandson, Cody Gene Paxton. Survivors are two sons, Monte L. Survivors include daughter, Carolyn Finley of McKinney; and sister, Virginia Chapman of Ballinger. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OBITUARIES NELL DECKER YATES Heritage Funeral Home BRADY — Nell Decker Yates, of Odessa and formerly of Menard went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, in Odessa at the age of 85 years. Graveside service was at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, in Rest Haven Cemetery in Menard. The Rev. Grosse Mohler conducted the service and burial followed. Nell was born on May 20, 1917, to Joe and Eula (Murray) Decker in Menard, Texas. She married Pete Yates on Oct. 7, 1937, in Menard, and he preceded her in death in September 2000. Nell was raised in Menard, and she then moved to Odessa in 1977. She returned to Menard in 1984 and moved to San Angelo in 1999, and finally returned to Odessa in 2001 following the death of her husband. Nell was a homemaker, a deacon of the Presbyterian Church and a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Odessa. Survivors include two daughters, Jo Lynne Harwell and her husband, James, of Odessa, and Elizabeth Smith and her husband, Jerry Don, of Mansfield; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Fischer, 70, of Pear Valley, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 10, 2002, at home surrounded by his loving wife and children. Rosary was at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Leatherwood Memorial Chapels in Brady. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen with burial to follow in St. Boniface Cemetery. Ivan was born Sept. 5, 1932, in the Bethel Community of Runnels County to Daniel and Anna Wilde Fischer. Ivan attended Bethel School, then attended Ballinger High School until he graduated in 1950. Ivan was baptized at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Olfen. He farmed until he entered the United States Army in 1954-56. On April 10, 1956, he and Carrol Kasberg were married in Rowena at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. They farmed in Runnels County until 1971, when they moved to the Pear Valley Lohn communities and continued to farm and ranch until his death. Ivan was active in the community; he served on the Lohn Independent School District school board for 21 years. He served as director on the Central Texas Telephone Co-op Board for six years, and a charter member of the Lohn Valley Improvement Association and a member of the Lohn Co-op Gin and Elevator. Ivan is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Carrol; his sons, Steve Fischer and wife, Linda, of Pear Valley, Gary Fischer of Brownwood, David Fischer and Cherlian of San Angelo, Robert Fischer and wife, Donna, of Veribest and Douglas Fischer of Pear Valley; daughter, Carolyn Dodson and husband, Bill, of Veribest; and nine grandchildren, Kyle and Stephanie of Pear Valley, Traccy and Justin of Eola, Denise of Austin, D.J. of San Angelo, Landon and Robynn of Veribest and Christopher of Brady. Ivan is also survived by his brothers, Daniel Fischer Jr. of Ballinger and Francis Fischer of Royce City; sister, LaRita Jansa of Wall; a special brother-in-law and friend, Dennis Kasberg of San Angelo; and his faithful companion, his dog, Toby. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Harvey Fischer; and his sisters, Marcella Zly and Arlene Gunyon.
