Survivors include his wife, Edna Lancaster of Big Spring; sisters, Marie Chapman and Eldora Zant, both of Big Spring, and Myrtle Williams of Fort Worth. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OBITUARIES NINA MACKEY ROPER Rains-Seale Funeral Home BALLINGER — Nina Mackey Roper died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in a Ballinger nursing home. Mrs. Roper was born Nov. 18, 1907, to Runnels County pioneers, Carrie and John Mackey. Her parents came to Texas from Georgia in 1889. She married Cecil Roper on Aug. 29, 1925. They made their home on the Roper farm in Norton, Texas. Mrs. Roper was a homemaker and was well known among her family and friends for her cooking and her needlework. She was a faithful member of Norton Baptist Church where she taught a children’s S.S. class for many years. Her husband died in 1992. Her parents preceded her in death. Also, she was preceded by four sisters, Nettie Wilson, Vera Griggs, Leta Todd and Edrie Petty; and two brothers, Floyd Mackey and Ralph Mackey. Two children, Norman Roper and wife, Mickie, of Lubbock, Texas, and Janice Patton and husband, Bobby, of Ballinger, Texas, survive her. Also, she leaves four grandchildren, Rhonda Roper, Steve Roper, Beth Heart and husband, Glen, and Paul Patton. She has three great-grandchildren, Garret Heart, Sara Heard and Brittany Patton. They were the joy of her life. Mrs. Roper’s service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at First Baptist Church with burial in Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, in Rains-Seale Funeral Home. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEOMA CAUBLE Weathersbee Funeral Home ROTAN — Neoma Ann Kolb Cauble, 88, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, in the Bronte Health & Rehabilitation Center. Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at the Roby United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kiefer Cauble and the Rev. Charlie Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Roby Cemetery. Neoma Ann Kolb Cauble was born Feb. 5, 1914, in Palestine, Texas, to Robert F. and Neomi Ika Kolb. Her parents moved to West Texas at an early age, and she married L.B. Cauble in Hobbs, N.M., Nov. 11, 1931. They farmed in Fisher County until 1974. She was a wonderful housewife, mother and companion to her husband and children. She was a member of the First United Methodist in Roby, Texas, for 58 years. Her church was a very important part of her life. She was an ever-present choir member for over 50 years. Her life was lived in service to her family and others in the community. She loved to bake chocolate pies and hot rolls for friends — and for needy people. She played the guitar at church for special times, for youth groups and for programs at Senior Citizens. Jack was born in Eden, Texas, on Sept. 4, 1923, to Alex and Velma Applewhite. After graduating high school, he joined the Navy in 1942, serving in the South Pacific during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He worked as a postman then trained and transferred to the FAA; working as an air traffic controller before retiring in 1977 after serving 30 years with the government. Jack then went to work at San Angelo State School, transporting clients for the medical division. He retired in 1990 after 13 years service to the state. Jack went on to work on something he enjoyed — refinishing furniture. He received pleasure in fishing, camping and football. Jack is survived by his wife, JoAnn Applewhite; daughters, Karen Covey of Round Rock and Carol Payne and husband, Michael, of Round Rock; son- in-law, Dan Pate of Midland; brothers, Charles (Lib) Applewhite of Ozona, Billy (Mae) Applewhite of Granbury and Alex and Gene Applewhite of Hamilton; and many nieces and nephews. Hardee, 63, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at home surrounded by his family. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, in the chapel of Kerbow Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Sonora Cemetery. He was born April 29, 1939, to Opal Atkisson Hardee and Curtis Clifton Hardee in Barry, Texas. Joe lived most of his life in and around Corsicana, Texas. While in high school he lettered in three sports: football, basketball, and distinguished himself in baseball, earning himself a letter of invitation and recruitment to summer tryouts with the Detroit Tigers. Besides sports, music was a big part of Joe’s life. In high school he sang with the Velvetones, traveling to many events and concerts. He later joined the Carriers while attending Navarro Junior College. In 1959 he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Hanau, Germany, for three years as a medic. He was a Baptist and a member of First Baptist Church of Corsicana, joining at the tender age of 16. Later, he moved his membership to New Hope Baptist Church of Sonora. He met and married Carole Ann Berry on Sept. 22, 1962, in Odessa, where he worked for various oil companies in Andrews, Odessa, North Long Beach, Calif., Irving, and Corsicana then moved to Eldorado in 1980 for ARCO Oil and Gas, retiring in 1987. He encouraged his wife, Carole Ann, to open a flower shop in Sonora. She christened her new shop “Petal Pushers” and enjoyed watching it flourish for 15 years. Joe is survived by his wife of Sonora; daughter, Dyann Warren of Midland; son and daughter-in- law, Lamar and Debbie Hardee of Victoria; son, Mark Hardee of Austin; mother, Opal Harwell of Odessa; grandson, Kenneth James Hardee of Bethlehem, Penn.; brother, Don Hardee of Odessa; sister, Shirley Taylor of Odessa; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, James Hardwell. Pallbearers will be Don Berry, Brian Berry, Dave Hardee, Tony Lane, Jimmy Taylor and Brent Taylor. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CARL WAYNE HECKAMAN Johnson’s Funeral Home Carl Wayne Heckaman passed away Friday morning, Nov. 1, 2002, at his residence after a lengthy battle with emphysema. Carl was born June 9, 1933, in Nappanee, Ind., to Oscar and Adelia Heckaman. Carl left Indiana and proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Carl was stationed at Sampson Air Force Base in New York and later transferred to Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls where he attended flight engineer school. From there, he was transferred to Goodfellow Air Force Base. Carl played on the Air Force basketball team, received the National Defense Service Medal and was honorably discharged in 1956. Carl married Jan Kohutek in San Angelo, on Oct. 2, 1954. They owned and operated Heckaman Exxon on Sherwood Way for 20 years before building Concho Car Wash and Lube Center, which was sold upon retirement in 1998. Carl also operated other businesses during the same time period, including Heckaman Ventures, Heckaman Fencing and Heckaman Farms in Knickerbocker, Texas. Besides farming alfalfa and raising livestock, Carl loved hunting and fishing with family and friends. Carl was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he had served as a member and president of its school board. He was also a Lifetime Optimist and received the Optimist of the Year Award. Carl was predeceased by both parents; his brother, Junior Heckaman; and his in- laws, Velma and Jerry Najvar. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Jan of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and Mickey Long of Midland, Texas, and Regay and Louis Hall of San Angelo. Also surviving are three grandchildren, whom he adored and knew him affectionately as Bubba; granddaughters, Amy King and husband, Brad, of Lubbock, Texas, Andrea Long, also of Lubbock; and grandson, Clancy Hall of San Angelo. Recently, Carl was thrilled with his first great- grandchild, Katherine Grace King of Lubbock. Carl also is survived by four siblings: Shirley Cunningham, Roland Heckaman and wife, Pat, and Stan Heckaman, all of Nappanee, Ind., and Lamar Heckaman of Clovis, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Jeri (Tooter) Russell of Burleson, Texas; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. They also resided in Lampasas during the ’80s, moving to San Angelo in 1992. He has been a resident at Myrtlewood Estates for the past year. He will be missed by his family and many friends. He was married to Bobbie Marie Gibbs on April 30, 1955, in San Angelo. Don retired from Goodyear Proving Grounds and Farmers Mutual Insurance. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He was Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 570 and Past Patron of Eastern Star Chapter No. 10 of San Angelo. He was a 32- degree Mason. Don was known affectionately as “Pa” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pa had a zest for life that he shared with everyone he met. Pa had a love for his family that could not be measured; and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life. His positive attitude toward life will always be remembered and cherished by his family.
