Kenneth R. Epley was born in the East Tennessee community of Erwin on Aug. 16, 1934, the son of Kelly and Hattie Epley. He died Thursday morning, Nov. 14, 2002, in San Angelo Community Medical Center following a brief illness. The education that would be the basis of his life’s work was gained through an engineering degree from East Tennessee State University. He served his country as a pilot in the United States Air Force from 1951-55. Ken moved to San Angelo in 1963, and began a successful career manufacturing drilling products and later worked with Reed Tool Co., Murphy Industries and Bakerdrill Company. When Bakerdrill made the decision in 1978 to close its San Angelo facility, Ken applied his entrepreneurial spirit with his years of experience and acquired the licenses to make the products formerly produced in San Angelo. He started Epley Enterprises Inc., a company that continues in operation today under the capable leadership of his son, Mike. Ken married Virginia Shotts in 1979, and for more than 23 years she has been his life partner, his companion, lover and friend. Throughout his life in San Angelo, Ken readily offered his time and talents in service to others through numerous civic organizations. An Eagle Scout, he maintained a lifetime commitment to scouting, serving in virtually every position of leadership locally. His contributions were acknowledged when the Silver Beaver Award was bestowed on him in 1977. His intense interest in scouting had been recently re-kindled by his grandson Michael’s entrance into the scouting program. For many years, he provided leadership on the San Angelo Lake Board and was a committed steward of the lake where he and Virginia made their home. His leadership skills also played an important role in the success of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, where he served as president of the Board of Trustees. The benefits of his leadership skills were also felt outside of San Angelo when Gov. Mark White appointed Ken in 1985 to the Texas Commission on Purchasing and General Services. Ken was a dedicated, loving and nurturing father and grandfather and cherished the time with his sons and grandchildren. Ken was a devout Christian and lived his faith in every encounter with another human being. He has always been committed to his church, and he was an important part of Glen Meadows Baptist Church, where he had served as a trustee and treasurer, and the unofficial master of the sound system. Ken was a good friend to many, all of whom have benefited from his kindness, generosity and compassion. His sense of humor brought laughter to those around him, while his gentle spirit was often a great source of comfort to others. He was a teacher who was willing and anxious to share his vast knowledge and experience. He was an encourager of other people who was always on the lookout for people who needed such encouragement. His presence will be sorely missed, but his legacy will live on through others for years to come. Ken was preceded in death by his loving son, John Mark Epley; his sister, Joyce Epley Pierce; his brother, K.L. “Bud” Epley Jr.; and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his son, Mike and daughter-in-law, Gina Epley; his beloved grandchildren, Sara Mackenzie, Michael Caleb and Shelby Grace; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby and Walter Williams of Atlanta, Ga. and Belva and Raymond Garland of Erwin, Tenn.; brother and sister-in-law, John M. and Ann Epley of Tullahoma, Tenn.; his former wife and friend, Peggy Epley; numerous nieces and nephews; and his loyal and loving golden retriever, Moses. Visitation with family members was from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, in the fellowship hall of Glen Meadows Baptist Church. Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at Glen Meadows Baptist Church with the Rev. R. James Shupp officiating. Burial will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Kevin J. Barry, Arch Black, Joel D. Sugg and John Tonne, all of San Angelo, Jean Shotts Jr. of Lubbock, Texas, Steve Shotts of Krum, Texas, Don Sinclair, of Houston, Texas, and Shawn Stoever of Branson, Mo. Honorary pallbearers are the employees of Epley Enterprises Inc. The family wishes to thank Dr. Pat Gibson and the ICU nursing staff at San Angelo Community Medical Center for their outstanding care, and to the many friends who have been so supportive and caring during Ken’s illness.
