Heaven’s gain is our loss, however, as Doyne McIver lost a long and courageous battle with cancer. Doyne was born April 14, 1939, and died at a painfully young age of 63. Born to humble means to Genia and Grady McIver of Trickham, Texas, his childhood and youth offered him lessons on living an upstanding life that would serve him all his days. He was able to attend and graduate from McMurry College in 1961, and received his masters of administration and education from the University of North Texas in 1965. He taught math and coached football in both Mansfield and Mesquite, Texas, taking a Mesquite High School team to the state finals in 1974. In 1979, he accepted a job as high school principal in Wall, Texas, which he continued until 1982. Doyne then got bitten by the oilfield bug, and retired from education to pursue interests in the oilfield, which he continued until his recent death. Doyne is survived by Wanda McIver, his wife and best friend of 43 years. Married in 1959, he and Wanda were soulmates, and she was his constant support and caregiver in his long battle with colon cancer. He also is survived by one son, Dr. Brad McIver and wife, Tracy, and their children, Gina, Kaela and Hannah of San Angelo; and two daughters, Melinda Salyer and husband, Jim, and their daughter, Cassidy of Georgetown, Texas; and Tami Knight and daughter, Tori, of San Angelo. He is also survived by two brothers, Royce McIver and wife, Wanda Joy, of Abilene, Texas, and Terry McIver and wife, Helen, of Santa Anna, Texas; a sister, Gayla Sellers and husband, J.W., of Fort Worth; and numerous nieces and nephews. Doyne lived his life as an example of integrity, faith and Christian principles, and this faith sustained him till the end of his life. He was a longtime member of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, serving on the administrative council, finance committee, and as church Lay Leader and numerous other committees. He was a charter member of the Seeker’s Sunday school class, teaching faithfully every Sunday for many years. He was instrumental in the development of the Broken Chains Prison Ministry, a ministry devoted to supporting recently released prisoners and their families, serving as its president for the first five years. He was honored as one of the church conference’s “Outstanding Laity Designees for 2002.” At the end of his life, he was CEO of BJ Oil Company and built his business with employees that often had been through difficult circumstances prior to their employment. He was a positive influence on their lives, caring for each of them individually. This faith in them was returned with their loyalty and kindness. His greatest joy was found in the bright eyes of his granddaughters who will sorely miss him. They knew that they were loved unconditionally by him, and he always could be depended upon for a trip for ice cream or a tall tale from his childhood at bedtime. He claimed he never spoiled them; he only “met their needs.” The family wishes to express its heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the countless members of Sierra Vista and the community who have provided their love and support during his difficult decline in health. Also, the family is extremely grateful for the wisdom, kindness, and compassion shown by Dr. Larry Bragg, Dr. Chris Barnett, Dr. Justin McCarthy and Dr. Charles Marsh, all of whom cared for him since his diagnosis of cancer. In particular, we will remain forever grateful for the gentle, kind and compassionate care provided by Dr. Raj Cheruku. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Reynolds presiding; with burial at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Trickham Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randy Reed, Anthony Mulkey, Bob Brewer, Joe Coughran, Glen Doggett and Dr. Don Shelby. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Seekers Sunday School Class. In lieu of flowers, the family would request that memorials be given to Sierra Vista UMC Family Life Center Fund, 4522 College Hills Blvd., San Angelo, Texas, 76904. ”And now the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that great day of his return.” 2 Timothy 4:6-8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CRISTINE M NURRE Johnson’s Funeral Home Cristy passed away and went to be with Jesus in Heaven on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 21, 2002, following a recent battle with cancer.
