He was honorably discharged in 1946 and attended college at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kan., earning a bachelor's degree in geology. He joined Stanalind Gas Company and began his career in Tyler, Texas. He married Dorothy Wilson on Oct. 21, 1950, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in San Angelo, Texas. Walter was a lifelong rancher and conservationist. One of his proudest achievements was the importation of the first pallet of Boer goats from New Zealand in the summer of 1993. This introduction of Boer goats into West Texas was a lifelong dream of his, which enhanced the meat goat industry. These goats served to complement his beloved herd of commercial Angus cattle. Walter was a faithful parishioner of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sonora, Texas, and a former Schleicher County commissioner and Sonora city alderman. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Wilson Pope; three children and their spouses, Janet and husband, Joe Andrews, of Midland, Cora and husband, Wally McGowan, of San Angelo and Walter C. Johnson's Funeral Home FORREST WARE HARLOW JR. Forrest Ware Harlow Jr. died on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at home following a lengthy fight against pancreatic cancer. A memorial service for Forrest will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27. Conducting the service will be Tim Richardson from Baton Rouge, La., assisted by Bryan Elliott and other friends and family members. There was a visitation from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26 at Robert Massie Funeral Home. Forrest was born Dec. 7, 1944, in Houston, Texas, to Forrest Ware and Mary Dow Hale Harlow. They moved to Abilene when Forrest was two years old. Forrest attended public schools in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School in 1963. His first year in college was at Abilene Christian College, and after that he attended the University of Texas at Austin. While in Austin, he received his BBA and MBA. During his years in Austin, he joined the Texas Army National Guard and served for six years. His other academic accomplishments include being a faculty member at East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas, (now Texas Aandamp;M, Commerce) for 13 years, getting his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in Denton, getting his CPA license and being on the faculty at Angelo State University for 19 years. He wrote a computer textbook that was used at Angelo State University, created a self-grading learning tool and had many academic honors. One of his proudest professional achievements was holding the Nathan and Sylvia Donsky Business Professorship from the time it was first granted until his death. Forrest was a very devoted father, husband and son. His children, Bill and Jennifer, were the lights of his life, and he came quickly to love Rachel, Bill's wife. Forrest married Ann Palk in Midland, Texas, on July 18, 1970. He unfailingly cared for his elderly parents when they began to need assistance, driving to Abilene almost weekly for several years. After his father's death, Forrest's mom moved to San Angelo, and he was a sterling example of how we should all care for our family when they need us. Besides his family, Forrest had many interests in life. While in school in Austin, Forrest helped support himself with jobs ranging from cab driver (that one only lasted three days!) to roofer to art gallery owner. He was a voracious reader and a diligent student, especially during the years that he was a professor. He never wanted to be asked a question to which he did not have a ready answer. He wrote a science fiction short story and a novella just because he thought it would be interesting to try. Forrest also enjoyed at various times beekeeping, woodwork, hunting and gardening. His musical tastes were also eclectic, ranging from Willie Nelson to bagpipes to the classical composers and the yearly Christmas performance of ''Good King Wenceslas.'' Forrest was also supportive of Ann's work with the Adult Literacy Council, the Christian Service Center, and was fascinated by her diligent work on the family genealogy. Survivors include his wife; his son, Bill and his wife, Rachel; and his daughter, Jennifer. Also surviving are his sister, Mary L. Harlow Holcomb and her husband, John; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rick and Beth Palk Littrell; Ann's parents, Ed and Ruth Palk; nieces and nephews, David and Lisa Parton Holcomb, Michael and Tammy Lee Holcomb, Kevin and Sarah Holcomb Elder, and John and David Littrell; and great-nieces and nephew, Erin Ashley Holcomb, Benjamin Isaac and Abigail Nicole Elder, and Emily Holcomb. Also there are his cousins, and Ann's cousins and her aunt and uncle, Nell and Frank Brnovak of Merkel. He was preceded in death by his parents and several dear aunts and uncles, both his and Ann's. He loved and appreciated the older generation. Interment will be in the White Church Cemetery in western Taylor County. This little cemetery is near the ''country place'' where he hunted and camped as a young man. There will be no pallbearers since it was Forrest's wish to be cremated and have only his ashes put in the ground at White Church. If he had pallbearers, the list would have been a long one. The family hopes that all of his friends know how valuable they were to him. The family requests that memorials be made to either West Texas Collection, Porter Henderson Library, 2601 W. Avenue N, San Angelo, TX 76904; Vision 2000, Johnson Street Church of Christ, 2200 Johnson St., San Angelo, TX 76904; or Adult Literacy Council, 3111 Southwest Blvd. San Angelo, TX 76904. The family thanks all those who have been so supportive during the last four years and gives special thanks to Forrest's doctors who were able to give him much more time than we ever thought possible when this was first diagnosed. First, to the Great Physician for saying yes to the prayers for so long; to Dr. John T. Granaghan: Thank you for running all the right tests and discovering the cancer so promptly; Dr. Larry Bragg: Thank you for all you did to get Forrest connected to the right doctors in Houston; and Thank you to Dr. Douglas B. Evans and his support staff at M.D. Anderson in Houston; and to Dr. Raj Cheruku, who was so active in maintaining the high quality of life that Forrest had for the last year. Hospice of San Angelo stepped in at a time when they were needed and provided necessary support and help. And thank you to Forrest for never giving up. Your password was so appropriate.
