Campbell was born March 6, 1920, on the 11-section cattle ranch where he was reared near Lohn in McCulloch County. He was the only child of Ed and Katie Campbell. He left home at age 18 to attend trade school in Fort Worth so he could become an FCC licensed broadcast engineer, the beginning of a lifelong involvement in radio. His first station job was at KGKL, San Angelo. Later, he worked at KNEL in Brady where he met and fell in love with Mary Jo Bradley whom he married Nov. 7, 1943, at the 4th and Blackburn Church of Christ in Brady. During World War II, Campbell worked in an aircraft plant in Grand Prairie and later enlisted in the Army, serving overseas in the Signal Corp on Okinawa. After the war, he owned and operated Western Radio in Brady where he sold and repaired home and auto radios and appliances. In 1950, at age 30, he moved with his wife and three children to Abilene and enrolled as a freshman at then Abilene Christian College. In 1951, he helped put on the air ACU's radio station KACC, later KACU-FM, for which he was honored by the station with a Founder's Award at KACU's 50th anniversary celebration in October 2001. He also worked on the installation of KFMN in Abilene, the city's first commercial FM radio station. He graduated as salutatorian of his class in just three years from ACC with a Bachelor of Science degree and a year later became ACC's first master's degree recipient in 1954. He continued his graduate studies at the University of Colorado in Boulder, completing his course work in 1956. He and his family then returned to Abilene to begin a 34-year career teaching psychology and education at ACU. Campbell served as head of the Psychology Department from 1966-70. He specialized in the preparation of guidance counselors for the public schools, and particularly enjoyed teaching the Elementary Statistics course. In Abilene, he preached during his student years for the Graham Street Church of Christ, and while a graduate student in Boulder, Colo., was minister for the Broadway Church of Christ there. In retirement, the Campbells traveled extensively, including to the Far East where they visited the location on Okinawa where he served during World War II. For the past 12 years, Dr. Campbell enjoyed operating the family farm near Pear Valley in McCulloch County. He raised wheat and Brangus cattle.
