MARY AUGUSTA "GUSSIE" BOONE WATSON Graham Funeral Home JUNCTION - Mary Augusta "Gussie" Boone Watson, 97, of Junction, departed her earthly life Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Kimble Hospital. She had sustained a broken hip in a Jan. 30 accident at her ranch home, and underwent surgery in the Hill Country Memorial Hospital in Fredericksburg prior to transferring to the local medical facility. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Monte Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Junction Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bennett Boone, Bubba Boone, Mike Graham, John Graham, Tim Graham and Pat Graham. Gussie was born Dec. 18, 1905, to John William and Mary Talburt Boone at the family's original homeplace near Telegraph, where the Boones had established a ranch when they moved to Kimble County a century ago. Soon thereafter, the family bought and moved to another nearby ranch location, where Gussie was still maintaining a home at the time of her death. She and some of her siblings received their early education at the Evergreen School, walking two miles to and from class each day. The parents later purchased a home in town adjacent to the school grounds to provide their children with a higher education, but the summer months were spent on the ranch. When Gussie graduated as valedictorian in 1923, one of her classmates was the late congressman O.C. Fisher. Early in life, Gussie set her goal to become a teacher, and her career in that field was to span more than 45 years. She touched many lives during that time, as countless students benefited from her knowledge and expertise. She received a teaching certificate, and her first position was in the fall of 1923 at the new Deats School in Edwards County, where she boarded in the home of Josh and Daisy Deats. The Paint Creek School, sometimes known as the County Line School, had disbanded that same year, and its successor - the Deats - was established further upstream on the South Llano River. In the ensuing years, Gussie attended Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton and subsequently received a bachelor's degree at West Texas College in Canyon. She was to further her education by attaining a master's degree in education at the University of Texas. Later, she received a second master's - one in Library Science - from UT. Gussie taught in Junction, Newcastle in Young County, and at other schools. She retired in Iraan in 1971 and returned to Kimble County. In 1935, before the advent of the local bus system, she commuted from the ranch into Junction each day to teach. Her pickup was equipped with improvised seats and cloth windows for the back of the truck, and under the auspices of the Evergreen District, she provided transportation in her converted "bus" for rural students en route to the town school. At Goldsmith in Ector County, Gussie served as the school's principal. In later years, when she again returned to Junction for a repeat assignment, she was the elementary principal. She married Ray D. Watson of Young County, and they became the parents of one daughter, Janis Raye. Gussie was an Episcopalian and a longtime member of both Delta Kappa Gamma and the Highland Study Club. As a volunteer for the Kimble County Library, her knowledge was a significant asset for that facility in the 1970's, when a move was made to the present library building. At that time, a modernized card filing system was instituted under her supervision. In 1998, while observing the 75th anniversary of her graduation from Junction High School, she and another surviving member of the class, Velma Dutton, served as Grand Marshals of the Hill Country Fair Association's annual parade. Throughout the years, Gussie maintained an avid interest in the lives of her former students, rejoicing in their accomplishments and empathizing in their disappointments. Her retirement years were a special time for Gussie as she continued to ranch on part of the Boone homeplace on her beloved South Llano River. One of her favorite pastimes until recent weeks was tending her flock of chickens. She was preceded in death by her parents; and five brothers, Jack, Llano, Debs, Richard and Lloyd W. Boone. Surviving are a daughter and son-in- law, Janis and Jerry Kirby of Junction; two granddaughters, Kim Kirby Golson and her husband, Randy, of Midland, and Kara Kirby Wood and her husband, Rick, of Midland; three great-grandsons; three sisters, Flossie McLendon of Manford, Okla., and Tempa "Tempie" Reynolds and Maude Graham, both of Junction; and nieces, nephews, many former students and a host of other friends. PAUL DEWAYNE GREEN Ellis Funeral Home MIDLAND - Following a major stroke in May 2002, at his home in San Angelo, Texas, Paul Dewayne Green has been residing with his brother and wife in Midland, Texas. Over time, further complications ensued from his weakened heart and death occurred on Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in the Hospice House in Odessa, Texas. He was 77. On Aug. 9, 1925, Paul was born in Blair, Okla., to Paul and Mayme Green. He spent his formative school years in San Angelo, Texas. After graduating from high school, he joined and served in the Army during World War II as a military policeman. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned to San Angelo, Texas, where his son was born and together they moved to Lubbock, Texas, where Paul continued his education at Texas Tech University, majoring in geology. Three and a half years later the Green family moved to West Texas where he began working for well servicing companies such as Huge Toll, Security Rockbit and Diamond Oil Well. Eventually he and his family settled in Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1956, where he founded, owned and operated Bond Coat Inc, a small petroleum service company. He retired from Bond Coat in 1990. Paul's retirement gave him more time to do what he loved best - fishing and traveling. He fulfilled his life long dream of visiting Africa, Thailand and England. His fascination for people of other countries and cultures was surpassed only by his thirst for knowledge of the world around him. When he took hold of a desire, he fully explored it, not just superficially, but much more than someone you'd expect for his age. What Paul had lost from passing family members he replaced with a large circle of friends. Many would say that the two were sometimes indistinguishable. He was a loving husband, father and friend. His passing will leave a large space in the hearts of those who knew him well, for certainly to know him was to love him. He was truly one of the good guys. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne; and his son, Terry. He is survived by one son, Jim Green and wife, Sue, of New York City; one brother, Don and wife, Diane, of Midland, Texas; two nephews, Chad and wife, Kim, of Midland, Texas, and Chris and his wife, Ashley, also of Midland. GLADYS PERRY MITTEL Kerbow Funeral Home ELDORADO - Gladys Perry Mittel, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother and friend, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, in Eldorado. She would have celebrated her 94th birthday on March 8. Her husband, Archie Mittel, precedes her in death as well as her parents, W.A. and Mary Catherine Perry, two brothers and a sister. She is survived by her children, Ronnie and Sharon Mittel and Margo and Bill Harrison; her grandchildren, Mitzi and Chuck Mayfield of San Antonio, Ron and Melanie Mittel of Frisco, Billy Harrison of Los Angeles, Calif., and Leslie and Jim Phillips of Tucson, Ariz.; and her great- grandchidren, Andy and Abby Mayfield, Madeline and Caroline Mittel and Josh and Katherine Phillips. She also leaves to mourn her loss her loving brother and wife, Bill and Jerry Perry of San Angelo; special friend, Agnes Stevens Wade of Leander; numerous nieces and nephews; and precious friends. She loved her family dearly and came to be known affectionately as Granzy - a grandmother who loved nothing more than having those grandchildren around. Gladys graduated from San Angelo High School and Business College, then worked as a secretary 12 years for Martin Glover before she and Archie moved to what became their lifelong home, the ranch southwest of Eldorado. It was the beginning of a life of Christian compassion for Gladys and she became known for her love and care for others. Her casseroles, cookies and cakes, and a smiling face made their way into many homes of the sick, bereaved and homebound. She was a charter member of Las Hermanas Study Club while living in San Angelo and a member of Eldorado Woman's Club since 1948. She chaired the Woman's Club Homes Tour for 20-plus years, making it the success that it was. She was a charter member and faithful volunteer of the Schleicher County Hospital Auxiliary, and she and Archie were charter members of the Eldorado Golf Club, serving as president of both organizations several times. She was an avid golfer. She had the privilege of being the first woman jury foreman in the county, and served on numerous committees that benefited the town of Eldorado. Other civic organizations helped by her endless efforts were the PTA, Red Cross, Blood Bank and the American Cancer Association. Gladys was a dedicated Christian who loved serving her Lord through her church, First Baptist Church. She was a teacher of young people for three decades, was a Girl's Auxiliary leader not only at her church but also at the local St. Luke's Baptist Church and was active in the Women's Missionary Union. She also served as secretary for the Concho Valley Association. We were all blessed to have her for many years and she will be deeply missed. The strong values, and morals that she lived before her children and grandchildren have had an immeasurable influence on their lives. The family gives special thanks to her loving caregivers at the Schleicher County Nursing Home. Funeral service, conducted by her grandchildren, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at First Baptist Church in Eldorado. Burial will follow in Eldorado Cemetery. Memorials may be made to West Texas Rehab or First Baptist Church.
