(SLIM) GRANZIN Johnson's Funeral Home We lost our "Pappy" on Saturday, March 15, 2003, while he was engaged in one of his favorite activities, fishing. A.T. (Slim) Granzin was born April 20, 1919, (Easter Sunday) in Georgetown, Texas, to Otto and Louise Granzin. He was looking forward to celebrating his 84th birthday on this upcoming Easter. Slim moved to Miles with his family when he was four and had resided in Miles since then. The Granzin family was among the founders of the Miles Trinity Lutheran Church where Slim had been a lifelong member and had served as a counselor for 26 years. On Sept. 26, 1941, Slim married his "Darling," Mary Bess McGuire, in this church. Slim was a man of varied interests and activities. He grew up on a farm and continued farming and ranching as a way of life. He was a dairy farmer for more than 40 years and served as a board member and president of the Western Division of the Associated Milk Producers Incorporated. He served as a trustee for the Miles Cemetery Association for 50 years and also served as a trustee and board president for the Miles Independent School District school board. He was a charter member of the Willow Creek Water Control District and was serving as its president. Slim and Mary Bess were among the organizers of the Miles Preservation Authority in 1976 and enjoyed participating in the growth of this group and in sponsoring the annual Miles Cotton Festival. Slim remained on the MPA board of directors until 2002. Slim also was a charter member of the Miles Young Farmers, served as a volunteer fireman for more than 25 years and served as a director for the Miles Co-op Gin. His coffee shop cronies met each morning and dubbed him the president of the "Table of Knowledge" club. This group was dedicated to solving both world and local problems on a daily basis. As a young man, Slim en-joyed roping calves, playing polo, hunting and fishing. Slim continued his love of the outdoors throughout his life; he hunted with his hounds for many years and fished as often as his health allowed. As an avid sports lover, Slim often was found watching whatever sport was in season at Miles. He and Mary Bess had their favorite spots at the football field, in the gym for both basketball and volleyball and at the baseball field. As their sons and grandchildren were growing up and involved in sports, Slim and Mary Bess missed very few games. In addition to being a sports enthusiast, Slim spent many afternoons playing dominoes and moon at the Co-op Gin. He passed this love of games and competition onto his sons and grandchildren. Slim was blessed with a ready wit and an engaging smile and had never met a stranger. He had a repertoire of wonderful stories that he readily shared with his family and friends. Each grandchild had a favorite, and Pappy never tired of telling and retelling these stories, nor did the grandchildren tire of hearing them. Pappy's stories always ended with a hearty laugh and were good for the soul. However, when things got out of hand with these same grandchildren, Pappy could chastise with his familiar "Now listen here!" Pappy was generous with his time and support with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He spent time with each individually and touched their lives with his advice and stories. Slim also welcomed each new addition, whether by birth or marriage, and made each feel a part of the family. Mary Bess Granzin, his wife of 61 years, survives Slim. Also surviving are two sons, Stacy and wife, Lynn, and Gary and wife, Dorothy. The joys of Pappy's life were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His grandchildren include Kelly Granzin and wife, Kim, Larry Granzin and wife, Michele, and Shelly Granzin, all of Miles, Heather Granzin of Houston, Rikki Granzin-McAda and husband, Mitch McAda, of San Angelo, and Alison Granzin and husband, Len Bryan, of Fort Worth. Great-grandchildren include Tristan and Jordyn Granzin of Rocksprings, Braiden, Haiden and Tinker Granzin of Miles, Megan and Madie-Claire McAda of San Angelo, and Kep, Tatum and Zoe Granzin of Miles. Slim also is survived by brothers, R.A. (Shorty) Granzin and wife, Imelda, of Miles and Dr. O.C. (Bob) Granzin and wife, Sue, of Baton Rouge, La.; and by numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Slim was preceded in death by brother, Martin Granzin; and sisters, Ella Straach, Lydia Nord, Fritzi Gordon and Hilda Gordon. The Velasquez family would like to express its sincere gratitude to Dr. Mark Holguin of Scott & White, Dr. Irving Zeitler and Alana Montgomery of Shannon Clinic, who not only cared for Catherine but gave us friendship. God bless you all. God Looked around his Garden and found an empty place. He then looked down upon his earth and saw your loving face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest. His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best. He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw your path was difficult, he closed your tired eyes, He whispered to you "Peace be Thine" and gave you wings to fly. When we saw you sleeping so calm and free of pain, We would not wish you back to earth to suffer once again. You've left us precious memories, your love will be our guide, You live on through your children, you're always by our side. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you on the day God called you home. DON L. WAGGONER Johnson's Funeral Home Don L. Waggoner, 81, of San Angelo, died Friday, March 14, 2003, in a local hospital.
